LEGOS
Building begins with connecting
• You need to connect with your co-workers
• Legos teach us that each individual is interdependent on the next one for
success.
• You can’t build something with only one Lego Brick.
• Lego Bricks provide strength and substance to the structure
• Legos are reliable, compatible, reusable
• Change is inevitable. Don’t get too comfortable
• Misplaced bricks – sometimes they are not the right fit
• Forced bricks – they might be in the wrong position or be the wrong
personality for that position
• Isolated bricks – don’t let people get lost, then they can’t fulfill their purpose
• Unorganized bricks – they are slow to the process, be intentional and
showcase people’s strengths
Slinky Dog
Vision – Pull then be patient
• Vision – more than any other leadership trait, vision pulls an organization forward
by giving it direction
• Observe the process and grow
• Balance the pull with patience – it’s tricky
– You’ve pulled the group forward, now you are waiting for the rest to catch up
• Visionary leaders talk about possibilities, not improbabilities
• Pull through Communication
– People need to know where you are going in order to follow
• Pull with Courage
– What ifs – it can be scary to take risks, but without risk, there can be no reward
• Pull with Determination
– Those who fight the pull need it the most

• A billion pounds of Play-doh has been manufactured since
1954.
• It’s is enough Play-doh to roll out a snake that would reach
around the Earth 3x’s.
• Each year Hasbro produces 95 million cans, in 21 colors, sold in
75 countries.

Mentoring – The Mold Makes the Man or Woman!
• Leaders resemble whatever makes an impression on them
• Molding should be intentional so you choose what influences you
• Positive Influences
• To be mentored you must be open
• Play-Doh is durable – Squeeze it, mash it, squash it pull it roll it out
• People are shaped because of their character
• To be mentored, you must have:
• Humility – you don’t have all of the answers, you should have a need for more knowledge and a need to
improve
• Teachability – you must have a willingness to learn; “Leadership and learning and indispensible to each other.” -
JFK
• Desire – “The most important thing about education is appetite.” –Winston Churchill
• Play-Doh Problems
• You can’t un-mix it
• Keep it fresh or it will harden
• If it hardens, it will crack
The shaping process never stops – who is shaping your life
today?
YO-YO
Creativity-it only happens when you let go
• Creativity is dormant until released – just like a yo-yo
• Creativity is the fuel for growth and opportunity
• Everyone has the potential to be creative if the conditions are right
• Good leaders don’t need to be the most creative, but rather surround themselves
with people who are. Creative people can connect the dots when others don’t.
• If a yo-yo goes off center, it loses momentum and you can’t get it back to
your hand.
• A yo-yo doesn’t work if you just hold it, you must release it so it can spin and have
the freedom to explore – LIVE OUTSIDE THE BOX
• A yo-yo comes back full circle – creativity and great ideas need landing gear and
wings
• Sometimes you have to rewind the yo-yo
• Regenerate and get back to your focus
• Creativity Killers cut the yo-yo string
• Don’t let them – what goes down must come up!
RUBIK’S CUBE
Ethics – Making the Right Turn
• There are ethical parallels in the solution of the cube
• There is an acceptable standard of right
• When you do things correctly, you create order, when you do things wrong, it creates chaos.
• There are no shortcuts in ethics
• Every move affects the whole cube
• People don’t wake up and say I’ll be unethical today
• They have a sequence of choices that slowly take away a person’s moral foundation.
• Desire Accountability
• If you have nothing to hide, you are open to accountability
• Develop Integrity
• It isn’t automatic and doesn’t have any on/off switch
• Make the right moves
• You have many moves, but only one right turn
The distance between your belief and your action is equivalent to your integrity.

Strategy – Success in the set up
• Know the potential of your people and you can find the
potential of your organization
• Count the troops – how many people do you have
• Count the types – quality inventory, the talent in your group
• Count the time – time for planning must be a priority
• Positioning
• The who – place people based on the talent needed for the job
• The where – where are you going to need people?
• The when – when will you need people for a job?
• Army Men are simple – they have an efficient strategy to get
the job done.
KALEIDOSCOPES
• Perspective influences our understanding.
• Find the good.
• Feeling stuck—change your perspective.
• Perspective changes everything.
LITE BRITE
Illuminate to Communicate
• Your message won’t be “brite” if there is no lite
• Light Bulb – the intent of your message begins as a thought, a glimmer in your eye
• Ambiguous messages blow your bulb – a deer caught in the headlights –
too much info to take in
• Untimely messages blow your bulb – people plan to work, eat, play, but
not to talk
• Irrelevant messages blow your bulb – this wastes time and weakens your
credibility
• Your message is bright when delivered properly.
• Delivery – Pegs represent the delivery. – To be simple, memorable and
focused.
• The bulb, pegs and black paper don’t guarantee a pretty picture, it’s the design that
makes it work.
• Communication is not about you, it’s about the audience
WEEBLES
Endurance – Staying down is not an option
Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down
• A leader is never more closely watched then in the moments following a failure.
• The first step in getting back up is determining that staying down is not an option.
• Failing is a fact of life, but if doesn’t have to be the final fact.
• Failing is inevitable, but not necessarily bad
• Anticipate the fall
• Learn from the fall
• Don’t duplicate the fall
• Endurance requires a center of balance
• Balance with determination – leaders get back up every time
• Balance with resistance – path of least persistence guarantees failure
• Balance with purpose – have a clear sense of purpose
• Support
• You need the support of others – the support of mentors and learn from your experiences
PUTTING AWAY THE TOYS
• When you live out the lessons these toys teach, you win
• Toys are only fun if they are being used, not sitting in the bottom of
the toy box.
• Share these ideas – share the toys
• Don’t be the selfish kid in the class that keeps all of the toys
• Put them away and don’t forget about them – if you need a reminder,
take them out again to play!

LEGOS Building begins with connecting • You need to connect with your co-workers • Legos teach us that each individual is interdependent on the next one for success. • You can’t build something with only one Lego Brick. • Lego Bricks provide strength and substance to the structure • Legos are reliable, compatible, reusable • Change is inevitable. Don’t get too comfortable • Misplaced bricks – sometimes they are not the right fit • Forced bricks – they might be in the wrong position or be the wrong personality for that position • Isolated bricks – don’t let people get lost, then they can’t fulfill their purpose • Unorganized bricks – they are slow to the process, be intentional and showcase people’s strengths

PLAY-DOH Mentoring – The Mold Makes the Man or Woman! • Leaders resemble whatever makes an impression on them • Molding should be intentional so you choose what influences you • Positive Influences • To be mentored you must be open • Play-Doh is durable – Squeeze it, mash it, squash it pull it roll it out • People are shaped because of their character • To be mentored, you must have: • Humility – you don’t have all of the answers, you should have a need for more knowledge and a need to improve • Teachability – you must have a willingness to learn; “Leadership and learning and indispensible to each other.” - JFK • Desire – “The most important thing about education is appetite.” –Winston Churchill • Play-Doh Problems • You can’t un-mix it • Keep it fresh or it will harden • If it hardens, it will crack The shaping process never stops – who is shaping your life today?

YO-YO Creativity-it only happens when you let go • Creativity is dormant until released – just like a yo-yo • Creativity is the fuel for growth and opportunity • Everyone has the potential to be creative if the conditions are right • Good leaders don’t need to be the most creative, but rather surround themselves with people who are. Creative people can connect the dots when others don’t. • If a yo-yo goes off center, it loses momentum and you can’t get it back to your hand. • A yo-yo doesn’t work if you just hold it, you must release it so it can spin and have the freedom to explore – LIVE OUTSIDE THE BOX • A yo-yo comes back full circle – creativity and great ideas need landing gear and wings • Sometimes you have to rewind the yo-yo • Regenerate and get back to your focus • Creativity Killers cut the yo-yo string • Don’t let them – what goes down must come up!

RUBIK’S CUBE Ethics – Making the Right Turn • There are ethical parallels in the solution of the cube • There is an acceptable standard of right • When you do things correctly, you create order, when you do things wrong, it creates chaos. • There are no shortcuts in ethics • Every move affects the whole cube • People don’t wake up and say I’ll be unethical today • They have a sequence of choices that slowly take away a person’s moral foundation. • Desire Accountability • If you have nothing to hide, you are open to accountability • Develop Integrity • It isn’t automatic and doesn’t have any on/off switch • Make the right moves • You have many moves, but only one right turn The distance between your belief and your action is equivalent to your integrity.

LITTLE GREEN ARMY MEN Strategy – Success in the set up • Know the potential of your people and you can find the potential of your organization • Count the troops – how many people do you have • Count the types – quality inventory, the talent in your group • Count the time – time for planning must be a priority • Positioning • The who – place people based on the talent needed for the job • The where – where are you going to need people? • The when – when will you need people for a job? • Army Men are simple – they have an efficient strategy to get the job done.

LITE BRITE Illuminate to Communicate • Your message won’t be “brite” if there is no lite • Light Bulb – the intent of your message begins as a thought, a glimmer in your eye • Ambiguous messages blow your bulb – a deer caught in the headlights – too much info to take in • Untimely messages blow your bulb – people plan to work, eat, play, but not to talk • Irrelevant messages blow your bulb – this wastes time and weakens your credibility • Your message is bright when delivered properly. • Delivery – Pegs represent the delivery. – To be simple, memorable and focused. • The bulb, pegs and black paper don’t guarantee a pretty picture, it’s the design that makes it work. • Communication is not about you, it’s about the audience

WEEBLES Endurance – Staying down is not an option Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down • A leader is never more closely watched then in the moments following a failure. • The first step in getting back up is determining that staying down is not an option. • Failing is a fact of life, but if doesn’t have to be the final fact. • Failing is inevitable, but not necessarily bad • Anticipate the fall • Learn from the fall • Don’t duplicate the fall • Endurance requires a center of balance • Balance with determination – leaders get back up every time • Balance with resistance – path of least persistence guarantees failure • Balance with purpose – have a clear sense of purpose • Support • You need the support of others – the support of mentors and learn from your experiences

PUTTING AWAY THE TOYS • When you live out the lessons these toys teach, you win • Toys are only fun if they are being used, not sitting in the bottom of the toy box. • Share these ideas – share the toys • Don’t be the selfish kid in the class that keeps all of the toys • Put them away and don’t forget about them – if you need a reminder, take them out again to play!

  1. We are here today to talk to you about ways to build a collaborative culture that inspires others. When people visit Safford and Douglas people often comment on how inviting, upbeat, open, warm, and casual they feel. Our Education teams at both complexes are generally happy, relaxed, and work well together. We thought it might be fun to share some of the things that help create this environment in a fun way.
  2. According to an article in Forbes Magazine, “6 Concrete Steps to Building a Collaborative Culture that Inspires,” teams need to communicate openly every day, the entire team needs to be involved in onboarding new hires, you need to reinforce your history and maintain traditions. Food is something that both our teams take very seriously! Personal lives need to be celebrated, remembering and acknowledging someone’s birthday as a team is a little thing that goes a long way! Collaborative teams honor individuals and their unique contributions to the good of the order! And above all they encourage personal connections! This list of childhood toys serves as a friendly reminder of the fun but real lessons that can be found in playing!
  3. First on the list is Legos. Interesting Facts: How many ways can you arrange six-eight studded Lego bricks? 915, 103, 765! Each arrangement started with 2 bricks… Relationships are the building blocks of any organization or family—we are human, we need to connect to other humans. Think of all the connecting that occurs in a single day. These connections exist at every level, in varying degrees, in multiple directions. When you make a connection, it lays a foundation upon which you can build the next on. Legos will not Velcro! They do not latch randomly– Relationships, like Legos, are at their best when they are designed, intentionally connected, and built. Connection is important in every area and in every stage of your life. Good leaders must partner with people by treating them with respect and value. Change is inevitable, and just like the same legos can build a dinosaur one day and a house the next, it’s important for us not to get stuck. We need to reinvent ourselves and find our right fit in the big picture. Don’t force a relationship that results in people being miserable. It looks odd and feels odd. Also be on the look out for isolate bricks– don’t leave people out, connect them! People feel valued when connected. Ultimately, it’s up the leaders of the group to keep things organized and the building happening. This can be your supervisor, but it is also each team members responsibility. What is your strength that you can bring to the table? What is your gift that can contribute to a masterpiece?
  4. As many of you probably know our new Governor has developed a new vision for the State of Arizona. Along with that, our Director of the Arizona Department of Corrections has got on board and we, as an agency, are implementing the Arizona Management System. This is a system that is sparked by vision, observations, communication, and determination. Agree with it or not, the Slinky Dog demonstrates how a vision is needed. And the leader, or head of the dog, points the team in the right direction, if the leader pulls too fast the team can be left behind or jump over some critical steps that leave the team in a tangled mess. So pull, then be patient. As educators we are always looking for ways to improve and take our students, teachers, and departments to the next level. It’s important to remember the lessons of Slinky Dog. Pull through communication, so your team knows where they are going. Pull with courage, sometimes we will go into uncharted territory. But those can be most rewarding. Also, pull with determination. We do not work in a very trusting environment. We often fight change. But remember, those who fight the pull need it the most. No one gets left behind or forgotten in our work families.
  5. What makes this such a great toys?? Smell, soft-feels good, yummy– it’s non-toxic quality has been a tasty treat for many!, Creativity, unlimited potential to be shaped! Have you ever watch a group of kids play with Play-doh? Rarely do they ever stick with their own color to build their masterpiece. They also talk about what they are building with either words or facial expressions. With limited resources they will ask to use the cutters, stamps, and other play-doh tools to make their art perfect. And when they have finished working and creating, they excitedly and proudly admire their handy work and share it with others. Our teams should work like that when we are working to towards accomplishing our goals. We want to shine our brightest, like brand new Play-doh. We should strive to play our role in the team and work with others to work towards a common goal. Now, you don’t want to be fake, generic Play-doh! We all know that may look ok at first, but it doesn’t last and can ruin the team. But genuine Play-doh, when taken care of, respected and valued for it’s contribution to the team can last a long time. When we work together like this we can build an unbreakable bond that is truly a work of art.
  6. We’ve talked so far about relationships, leadership, and collaboration… Imagine yourself as a leader. You don't think of yourself as a leader? Could be currently or in the future. What do you do well? Where is a safe zone for you? What do others recognize in you? Keeping that in mind, how would you represent yourself visually? Create an image of yourself as a leader. Sculpt that image. With play-doh. Then write a leadership statement on the 3x5 card. You’ll have about 10 minutes. The truth is– we all play a leadership role at some point in our lives. This leadership may be just in your classroom, or it may be in your community, home, or in your team. Leaders have the responsibility to keep themselves fresh and to own that role to help those who look to them.
  7. Like Play-doh, we resemble whatever makes an impression on us! Q. What ideas, values, or people shape you right now? The mold you choose will make the difference in the person you become, good or bad. Play-Doh is durable– it can be handled over and over and if it’s taken care of, it looks amazing each time. This takes trust in the mentor and team, but also requires personal accountability and responsibility for your own role. It should be noted that being compliant is just following the rules, it’s not changing the shape of who you are. Compliance and cooperation can often parade itself as collaboration—but once the influence leaves—the original shape returns. Molding should be intentional, you choose who influences you! To be mentored, or molded, you must have humility, teachability, and a desire to be mentored. Q. Who are the mentors in your life? Why did you choose them? Protect yourself from bad influences– what are those bad influences for play-doh? What are the bad influences that keep you from being fresh? What happens when play-doh is exposed to an unhealthy environment? It hardens, cracks appear, integrity disappears. Remember that as great as Play-doh is… you can’t un-mix it. This can work in favor of a strong team as they become unbreakable. However, if you don’t keep yourself fresh and open to being reshaped…if you choose to mix yourself with bad influences instead of positive ones…it will become part of who you are. You can continue to mix and change, but you will forever be impacted. This shaping process should never stop! In a mentoring situation– the mentor and the mentee are both being shaped and influenced by the sitation.
  8. Because every relationship we have influences us and because we are constantly being faced with challenges the Yo-You reminds us that we sometimes need to be creative! We use this creativity in everything we do we have to let go and give it a try! The lesson we learn from the Yo-Yo is that sometimes we can get lost in the creativity or lose our momentum to try new things. This is when we stop, return to our center, and rewind. This is where a strong team, built on trust and openness can help! Strong teams don’t cut the yo-yo string! They recognize a problem and help people get going again.
  9. Why would the Rubik’s cube represent ethics?? Have you ever been tempted, or succumb to the temptation, of moving the stickers around to make them all match? What happens to the rubik’s cube then? It never works right. There are no shortcuts in ethics– every move you make impacts your mold. When a person is ethical they can be trusted in the team. They are recognized by their team as genuine play-doh. They desire accountability and develop integrity by making the right moves. Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is looking– it’s a critical part of a creating an collaborative culture.
  10. We are all here to get things done! Properly utilizing your resources will result in the greatest advancement toward the goals of your team. Through honoring the individual and encouraging personal connections you will know exactly who you have to work with! The three facets of positioning the right people in the right place—the who of positioning, the where of positioning, the when of positioning. When attacking challenges and working to get things done we use practical rehearsal, proactive policymaking, and planned contingencies—these all come about during open communication with all staff members.
  11. Something to consider when keeping ‘open communication’ is perspective. Kaleidoscopes remind us that we all can look at the same thing but depending on our filter– we may see something different. Something unique to our environment is the extreme diversity that is contained in each unit, classroom, and team. We work in a very negative environment. We can choose to see the negative or pull out our kaleidoscope and see the opportunity to create something new. Perspective changes everything.
  12. Communication is rated high on the priority list for most people. Effective communication needs to be clear and brite. Those complain a lot or constantly send mixed messages will end up dimming their lite. Understanding that everyone has something to contribute to the team and encouraging communication is important. But recognizing that sometimes it’s not the time or place to bring things up or you can blow your bulb. Once your bulb is blown- people will stop listening to you. Once communication stops– the team is damaged. If the bulb can be replaced, then your message can be delivered. Communication is something we all can improve on– we may know what we want to say—but if its not delivered clearly and in a meaningful way– it’s just a blur.
  13. Failure can result from poor communication or million other ways… failures are just an opportunity to try again. Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down– remind us that staying down isn’t an option. We will all fail at some point in our lives. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. How long we wobble depends on the blow! But with the support of our teams we can learn from our failures and keep on going.
  14. When you live out the lessons these toys teach, you win! So use them! Also, share them! Put them away neatly, but don’t forget the lessons! And when needed, take out the toys, grab hold of the example, and watch them transform your leadership skills!
