Principal Investigator Trevor Harrison proposes investigating Mount Tambora in Indonesia to monitor its current activity level and assess any potential danger from future eruptions. Tambora's 1815 eruption was one of the largest on record and caused tens of thousands of deaths as well as global climate effects. Harrison plans to use GPS, tilt meters, and gas monitoring systems around Tambora to detect any signs of bulging, expansion, or volcanic gas release that could signal future eruption. The requested budget for this monitoring project is $5,436.
