Holistic medicine is the art and science of
healing that addresses care of the whole person - body, mind, and spirit. The
practice of holistic medicine integrates conventional and complementary
therapies to promote optimal health, and prevent and treat disease by
addressing contributing factors. Holistic healthcare practitioners strive to
meet the patient with grace, kindness, acceptance, and spirit without
condition, as love is life’s most powerful healer.
In practice, this means that each person is seen as a unique individual, rather
than an example of a particular disease. Disease is understood to be the result
of physical, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental imbalance. Healing,
therefore, takes place naturally when these aspects of life are brought into
proper balance. The role of the practitioner is as guide, mentor and role
model; the patient must do the work - changing lifestyle, beliefs and old
habits in order to facilitate healing. All appropriate methods may be used,
from medication to meditation.
Alternative or Complimentary therapies were in practise long before conventional medicines came into being. Here we give a perspective of what are these therapies and the timeline

The healing power of nature refers to the body's innate ability to heal itself. When illness or imbalance occurs the body naturally wants to correct this in an effort to be healthy and well. As naturopaths we believe that symptoms are a manifestation of the body's attempt to rehabilitate.
Naturopathic medicine recognizes and respects the inherent self-healing ability of the body. Identify and Treat the Cause. The naturopathic doctor seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than trying to eliminate or suppress symptoms. First Do No Harm.

Alternative Medicine: The Ins and Outs of Non-Traditional Healingsaravananshanmugam64
Introduction
Traditionally, the first response for Americans to any type of medical issue is conventional medicine. There is, however, another option. Alternative medicine is sometimes considered the oldest medicine in the world. Alternative medicine envelops the concept of seeking out non-traditional ways to deal with day-to-day health issues. This type of medicine looks beyond taking medication. People look to use alternative medicine for two main reasons. The first is because of the idea that taking medications can potentially lead to unhealthy results such as dependencies and side effects. The second is because of the natural curiosity of man to find better methods to heal...

GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS AND GASTRITIS
Osvaldo Bernardo Muchanga
Gastrointestinal Infections
GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS result from the ingestion of pathogens that cause infections at the level of this tract, generally being transmitted by food, water and hands contaminated by microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, Rotavirus among others that are generally contained in feces, thus configuring a FECAL-ORAL type of transmission.
Among the factors that lead to the occurrence of gastrointestinal infections are the hygienic and sanitary deficiencies that characterize our markets and other places where raw or cooked food is sold, poor environmental sanitation in communities, deficiencies in water treatment (or in the process of its plumbing), risky hygienic-sanitary habits (not washing hands after major and/or minor needs), among others.
These are generally consequences (signs and symptoms) resulting from gastrointestinal infections: diarrhea, vomiting, fever and malaise, among others.
The treatment consists of replacing lost liquids and electrolytes (drinking drinking water and other recommended liquids, including consumption of juicy fruits such as papayas, apples, pears, among others that contain water in their composition).
To prevent this, it is necessary to promote health education, improve the hygienic-sanitary conditions of markets and communities in general as a way of promoting, preserving and prolonging PUBLIC HEALTH.
Gastritis and Gastric Health
Gastric Health is one of the most relevant concerns in human health, with gastrointestinal infections being among the main illnesses that affect humans.
Among gastric problems, we have GASTRITIS AND GASTRIC ULCERS as the main public health problems. Gastritis and gastric ulcers normally result from inflammation and corrosion of the walls of the stomach (gastric mucosa) and are generally associated (caused) by the bacterium Helicobacter pylor, which, according to the literature, this bacterium settles on these walls (of the stomach) and starts to release urease that ends up altering the normal pH of the stomach (acid), which leads to inflammation and corrosion of the mucous membranes and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
In addition to bacterial infections, gastritis and gastric ulcers are associated with several factors, with emphasis on prolonged fasting, chemical substances including drugs, alcohol, foods with strong seasonings including chilli, which ends up causing inflammation of the stomach walls and/or corrosion. of the same, resulting in the appearance of wounds and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
Among patients with gastritis and/or ulcers, one of the dilemmas is associated with the foods to consume in order to minimize the sensation of pain and discomfort.

Congestive Heart failure is caused by low cardiac output and high sympathetic discharge. Diuretics reduce preload, ACE inhibitors lower afterload, beta blockers reduce sympathetic activity, and digitalis has inotropic effects. Newer medications target vasodilation and myosin activation to improve heart efficiency while lowering energy requirements. Combination therapy, following an assessment of cardiac function and volume status, is the most effective strategy to heart failure care.
Allopurinol, a uric acid synthesis inhibitor acts by inhibiting Xanthine oxidase competitively as well as non- competitively, Whereas Oxypurinol is a non-competitive inhibitor of xanthine oxidase.
The biomechanics of running involves the study of the mechanical principles underlying running movements. It includes the analysis of the running gait cycle, which consists of the stance phase (foot contact to push-off) and the swing phase (foot lift-off to next contact). Key aspects include kinematics (joint angles and movements, stride length and frequency) and kinetics (forces involved in running, including ground reaction and muscle forces). Understanding these factors helps in improving running performance, optimizing technique, and preventing injuries.

This presentation gives information on the pharmacology of Prostaglandins, Thromboxanes and Leukotrienes i.e. Eicosanoids. Eicosanoids are signaling molecules derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids like arachidonic acid. They are involved in complex control over inflammation, immunity, and the central nervous system. Eicosanoids are synthesized through the enzymatic oxidation of fatty acids by cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes. They have short half-lives and act locally through autocrine and paracrine signaling.

Fexofenadine is sold under the brand name Allegra.
It is a selective peripheral H1 blocker. It is classified as a second-generation antihistamine because it is less able to pass the blood–brain barrier and causes lesser sedation, as compared to first-generation antihistamines.
It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Fexofenadine has been manufactured in generic form since 2011.
PGx Analysis in VarSeq: A User’s PerspectiveGolden Helix
Since our release of the PGx capabilities in VarSeq, we’ve had a few months to gather some insights from various use cases. Some users approach PGx workflows by means of array genotyping or what seems to be a growing trend of adding the star allele calling to the existing NGS pipeline for whole genome data. Luckily, both approaches are supported with the VarSeq software platform. The genotyping method being used will also dictate what the scope of the tertiary analysis will be. For example, are your PGx reports a standalone pipeline or would your lab’s goal be to handle a dual-purpose workflow and report on PGx + Diagnostic findings.
The purpose of this webcast is to:
Discuss and demonstrate the approaches with array and NGS genotyping methods for star allele calling to prep for downstream analysis.
Following genotyping, explore alternative tertiary workflow concepts in VarSeq to handle PGx reporting.
Moreover, we will include insights users will need to consider when validating their PGx workflow for all possible star alleles and options you have for automating your PGx analysis for large number of samples. Please join us for a session dedicated to the application of star allele genotyping and subsequent PGx workflows in our VarSeq software.
Receptor Discordance in Breast Carcinoma During the Course of Life
Definition:
Receptor discordance refers to changes in the status of hormone receptors (estrogen receptor ERα, progesterone receptor PgR, and HER2) in breast cancer tumors over time or between primary and metastatic sites.
Causes:
Tumor Evolution:
Genetic and epigenetic changes during tumor progression can lead to alterations in receptor status.
Treatment Effects:
Therapies, especially endocrine and targeted therapies, can selectively pressure tumor cells, causing shifts in receptor expression.
Heterogeneity:
Inherent heterogeneity within the tumor can result in subpopulations of cells with different receptor statuses.
Impact on Treatment:
Therapeutic Resistance:
Loss of ERα or PgR can lead to resistance to endocrine therapies.
HER2 discordance affects the efficacy of HER2-targeted treatments.
Treatment Adjustment:
Regular reassessment of receptor status may be necessary to adjust treatment strategies appropriately.
Clinical Implications:
Prognosis:
Receptor discordance is often associated with a poorer prognosis.
Biopsies:
Obtaining biopsies from metastatic sites is crucial for accurate receptor status assessment and effective treatment planning.
Monitoring:
Continuous monitoring of receptor status throughout the disease course can guide personalized therapy adjustments.
Understanding and managing receptor discordance is essential for optimizing treatment outcomes and improving the prognosis for breast cancer patients.

4. What is traditional
medicine ?
It is defined as sum total of knowledge,
skills and practices based on the
theories, beliefs and experiences of
indigenous people of different culture
that are used to maintain health, as well
as to prevent, diagnose, improve or
treat physical and mental illness.
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
5. Popularity of traditional medicine
• Many people have found this system as
efficacious in curing diseases.
• Most importantly traditional medicines
aims at curing whole body instead of
specific symptoms, which is often done in
allopathic medicine
• Traditional medicines are affordable than
the allopathic medicines in rural areas.
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
6. • Traditional medicinal practitioners claim to
have a complete cure of diseases like
rheumatism or diabetes, where allopathic
can not provide cure for these common
diseases.
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
7. Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a complete medical protocol
focused on correcting imbalances of energy in
the body.
Some neurologists believe it is possible that
acupuncture points contain deep seated nerve
complexes. Pressing down on these nerve
complexes does cause a dull ache in the affected
area/body part.
Inserting needles into these nerve points could
result in a stimulation of the brain and the spinal
cord encouraging the release of natural
painkillers or endorphins.
These chemicals can then block the sensation of
pain and help the area heal itself.

8. From its inception in China more than 2,500
years ago, acupuncture has been used
traditionally to prevent, diagnose and treat
disease, as well as to improve general health.
History:

9. In treatment of Respiratory disorders:
• Sinusitis
• Sore throat
• Bronchitis
• Asthma
Applications:
In treatment of Digestive disorders:
• Gastritis & hyperacidity,
• Spastic colon
• Constipation
• Diarrhoea.
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
10. The most common acupuncture side effects are bleeding and
bruising at the site, along with minor pain and soreness. It is
recommended that a disinfectant such as alcohol be swabbed
over the area prior to needle insertion to decrease the very
small possibility of infection. Obviously, needles should be
clean and never shared between clients.
Limitations:

11. Acupressure
Acupressure is a therapy which uses precise finger
placement and pressure over specific points along the
body. These points follow specific channels, known as
meridians - the same channels used in acupuncture.
Activation of these points with pressure can improve
blood flow, release tension. This release allows energy
to flow more freely through the meridians, promoting
relaxation, healing and the restoration of proper
function.

12. More than two thousand years ago acupressure/ acupoint
massage was already being applied in medical practice. As
stated in the Canon of Medicine, the oldest medical classic in
existence in China, written in the Warring States Period (475-
221 B.C.)
History:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
13. • To Relieve stress and tension
• To Relax mind and body
• To Increase blood circulation
• As Aid in the removal of toxic wastes
• To Provide relief from head, neck and shoulder aches
• To Promote the healing of injuries
• To Increase energy levels
•To Increase overall feeling of well-being
• To Decreasing labor pains
Applications:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
14. Acupressure should not be considered primary treatment for
serious illness, and should be used with care during pregnancy
as certain points are thought to stimulate uterine contractions.
Pressure should not be exerted over areas with burns,
infection, contagious diseases of the skin or active cancer.
Limitations:

15. Ayurveda
Ayurveda means science of “life” or “way of
life” consisting of two Sanskrit words “Ayur” &
“Veda”. It is the traditional medicine which
includes a system of herbalism similar to that of
traditional Chinese medicine, but also offers
dietary regulation, yoga and other exercises,
bodywork, detoxification, and psychological
interventions.
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
16. Ayurvedic medicine is a system that
originated in northern India over 5,000 years
ago primarily from one of the Vedic texts, the
ancient books of wisdom and ceremony that
contributed a great deal to the foundation of
Indian culture and civilization.
History:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
17. Because Ayurveda emphasizes prevention of disease,
individualization of treatment, and the maintaining of
balance between body, mind and spirit, the approach can be
considered appropriate in most any clinical circumstance.
Ayurvedic medicine can be helpful in the treatment of
chronic conditions such as asthma, coronary heart disease,
type 2 diabetes, digestive disorders, rheumatoid arthritis and
other autoimmune conditions, as well as chronic skin
disorders.
Applications:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
18. Ayurvedic medicine is considered an adjunct to conventional
medical care, not primary therapy. Women who are pregnant
or nursing, or people who are thinking of using Ayurvedic
therapy to treat a child, should be especially sure to consult
their health care provider.
Limitations:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
19. Homeopathy
Homoeopathy is a system of treatment
(branch of medical science) works on
the principle of ‘‘Similia similibus
curenter’’.
Means like cures like , further
explanation is that patient & medicine
symptoms are similar, it also called
LAW OF SIMILA
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
20. Homoeopathy is a system of medical
treatment introduced by Dr.Christian
Friedrich Samual Hahnenann, a German
physician. he had spread a long and useful
life of 88 years during which he benefited the
suffering humanity immense by introducing
this new system of medicine.
History:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
21. Homeopathy means each person is treated as a unique
individual and their body, mind, spirit and emotions are all
considered in the management and prevention of disease.
Taking all these factors into account a homeopath will select
the most appropriate medicine based on the individual’s
specific symptoms and personal level of health to stimulate
their own healing ability.
Applications:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
22. Homeopathy functions in much the same way as a vaccine: It’s
based on the principle of treating “like with like,” meaning a
substance that causes adverse reactions when taken in large
doses can be used—in small amounts—to treat those same
symptoms. (This concept is sometimes used in conventional
medicine, as well; for example, Ritalin is a stimulant used to
treat patients with ADHD.
Limitations:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
23. Unani Medicine
According to the basic principles of
Unani the body is made up of the four
basic elements i.e. earth ,air, water, fire
which have different temperaments i.e.
cold, hot, wet, dry. After mixing and
interaction of four elements a new
compound having new temperament
existence. i.e. Hot wet, hot dry, cold wet,
and cold and dry.

24. Unani system originated in Greece Hakim
Ajmal Khan IS UNANI physician but also one
of the foremost freedom fighters in the
country. He established an Ayurvedic and
Unani Tibbia College and Hindustani
Dawakhana – a pharmaceutical company –
for Ayurvedic and Unani medicine in Delhi in
1916.
History:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
25. Unani system of Medicine has very remarkable strength in the
following disorders:
• Skin disorders
• Digestive disorders
• Mental disorders
• Sexual disorders
• Gynecological disorders
• Neurological disorders
Applications:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
27. Chiropractic Therapy
It is a treatment that uses the hands to
manipulate the body, remains one of
the most widely used forms of manual
medicine. Chiropractic is pretty widely
accepted in the medical community,
and thus qualifies more as a
“complementary” medicine than an
alternative one.
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
28. Although it was formally introduced in 1895,
chiropractic, along with osteopathy, follows
the tradition of hands-on manipulation that
dates back to ancient systems of treatment
in China, India, and Egypt.
History:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
29. Back pain ranks among the most common problems that
bring people to chiropractors. Spinal manipulation has been
found to be effective in the treatment of low back pain
(particularly chronic pain), neck pain, muscle tension
headaches, and several other conditions. Performed
properly, it can relieve musculoskeletal discomfort as well as
improve the circulation of blood.
Applications:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
30. Chiropractic therapy is not recommended for people with
serious bone problems, such as osteoporosis, bone or joint
infections, bone cancer, acute rheumatoid arthritis and
diseases of the spinal cord or bone marrow.
Limitations:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
31. Biofeedback
"Bio" means life. "Feedback" is returning
knowledge to origin.
Then "Biofeedback" (BF) means
returning the biological knowledge
created by the origin to origin in order
to make the origin understand and
control that knowledge
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
32. Biofeedback is one of the earliest behavioral
medicine treatments and has been practiced
in clinical settings since the 1970's.
History:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
33. Disorders effectively treated by biofeedback include:
• Migraines and other types of headaches
• High and low blood pressure
• Cardiac arrhythmias
• Epilepsy
• Paralysis and other movement disorders
• Nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy
• Stress
• Anxiety
Applications:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
34. • It can be expensive, especially if you are paying for the cost
out of pocket. Biofeedback isn’t always covered by health
insurance or Medicare, especially when it’s not considered
to be “reasonable and necessary”.
• It might not work for you. Biofeedback doesn’t work for
everyone, and it might not be an effective form of
treatment for you. If you feel you aren’t making progress,
talk to your healthcare provider to determine possible
reasons (e.g., you need more sessions) why, and whether or
not continuing is in your best interest
Limitations:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
35. Reflexology
Reflexology (or foot reflexology) is a
therapy based on the principle that
there are small and specific areas of
innervation in the hands and feet that
correspond to specific muscle groups or
organs of the body.
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
36. Modern reflexology is based on an ancient
form of therapy. There is evidence of some
form of foot and hand therapy being
practiced in China as long ago as 4,000 B.C.
and also at the same time in Egypt, as
depicted in the tomb of Ankmahor.
History:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
37. In broad terms, reflexology is intended to reduce generalized
stress and help the body achieve a state of deep relaxation
and homeostasis
This therapy may be an especially useful complementary
treatment for neuropathy of the legs, feet and toes. It can also
be useful for sore hands and feet after a workout, running or
taking a long walk
Applications:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
38. Anyone with active blood clots should avoid rubbing near the
area of the clot. Burns, wounds, gout and infections to the
hands or feet should also limit the use of reflexology. Lower
extremity swelling or chronic skin changes that are a result of
vascular problems to the feet should also limit this form of
therapy.
Limitations:
Misuk Roy 🔎only1misuk
39. In this context the contribution made by the traditional
medicine to modern system of medicine is worth nothing. The
well-established treatments given above are among dozens
that have been developed by the scientists after analysing the
chemical constituents of plants traditionally used by tribals
and villagers. The government should provide environment to
the people for using these traditional treatments and
medicine systems.
Conclusion

Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is the best to admit them quickly,
and get on with improving your other innovations.
