Creating choices in alternate healthcare
Evolution of alternative
therapy
• Diverse medical practices that were collectively
promoted as alternative medicine beginning from the
1970’s, outside the mainstream Western or
Conventional medicine as practised by the majority of
the doctors today. Also known as Complementary and
Alternative Medicines(CAM).
• The various approaches of CAM typically are used in a
manner that is complementary to standard medical
practices
• Popular forms of CAM are Ayurveda, Homeopathy,
Naturopathy, Yoga, Accupuncture, Shiatzu….
What is Alternative Therapy?
Timeline
• The ancient medical tradition of
India. Ayurveda traces its origins to a
text written by Sushruta, the “father
of Surgery,” in the 6th century BC
• Using a system of eight treatment
disciplines, Ayurvedic holistic health
practitioners guide their patients to
balance and moderation.
• Such disease-inducing imbalances
can be adjusted and balanced using
traditional herbs, minerals and heavy
metals.
BC 2500 – 1600 : The origin of Ayurveda
• Derived from the Sanskrit
word yuj, Yoga means union of the
individual consciousness or soul with
the Universal Consciousness or Spirit.
• Yoga is a 5000-year-old Indian body of
knowledge. Though many think of
yoga only as a physical exercise where
people twist, turn, stretch, and
breathe in the most complex ways
• It comprises of Asanas( Posture
Exercises) and Pranayama(Breath
Control).
• The Science of Yoga has been said to
have been founded by Maharishi
Patanjali, through his Yoga Sutras.
BC 600 : Yoga
• A system in which medical doctors and other
healthcare professionals (such as nurses,
pharmacists, and therapists) treat symptoms and
diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery.
• Also called allopathic medicine, orthodox medicine,
Western medicine etc.
• From 1600 till 1947,these Conventional Medicines
spread due to the trade practices of The East India
Companies, and these Medicines became the
Standard for Medicines.
AD 1600 : Conventional Medicines
• It is an alternative therapy which is based on the
belief that a substance that causes the symptoms
of a disease in healthy people cures similar
symptoms in sick people.
• This medical science was developed by Dr.
Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German
physician.
• This idea is referred to as the “Law of Similars“,
and was understood by Aristotle and Hippocrates
and mentioned in ancient Hindu manuscripts. For
e.g. - an onion makes your eyes water and your
nose burn. If you are having an attack of hay fever
with watering eyes and a burning nose, a
homeopathic remedy made from onion helps.
AD 1796 : Homeopathy
• Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction
and relaxation that also promotes healing.
• The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words -
Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher
Power" and Ki which is "life force energy".
• Practitioners place their palms on the patient
near Chakras(energy points) that they believe are
centres of supernatural energies in the belief that
these supernatural energies can transfer from the
practitioner's palms to heal the patient.
• Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of
natural healing, recommended that one practice
certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and
harmony, which are nearly universal across all
cultures.
AD 1922 : Reiki
• The government of India makes efforts to recognize
Ayurveda, Siddha(Perfection) and Unani(Mughal
Therapies) as being on par with scientific medicine.
• In traditional medical schools the vocabulary and diagnostic
tools of modern medicine replace traditional terms and
techniques, and students increasingly become unfamiliar
with classical references and methodologies.
• Nevertheless, these medicines continued to follow the
norms of that of Western Medicines.
AD 1947 : India Post Independence
• In the 1970s, irregular practices were grouped with traditional
practices of non-western cultures, and with other unproven or
disproven practices that were not part of biomedicine, and the
entire group began to be marketed and promoted as
"alternative medicine".
• In 1973, the Medical Faculty of the University of Rome
convened the first World Congress of Alternative Medicines
and the provisional program contained no less than 135
therapies.
• Following the counterculture movement of the 1960s,
misleading marketing campaigns promoting "alternative
medicine" as an effective "alternative" to biomedicine, and
with changing social attitudes about not using chemicals, use of
alternative medicine in the west began to rise
AD 1970’s : The surge of alternative medicines
• Pranic Healingis a highly evolved and tested system
of energy medicine developed by Grandmaster Choa
Kok Sui that utilizes prana to balance, harmonize and
transform the body's energy processes. Prana is a
Sanskrit word that means life-force.
• This invisible bio-energy or vital energy keeps the
body alive and maintains a state of good health.
• It is based on the fundamental principles that the
body is a self-repairing living entity that possesses
the ability to heal itself and that the healing process
is accelerated by increasing this life force that is
readily available from the sun, air and ground to
address physical & emotional imbalances.
AD 1980’s : The surge of alternative medicines
• WHO Report stated “Traditional & Complementary Medicine
(T&CM) is an important and often underestimated part of
health care”.
• It also states that there is a need for its closer integration into
health systems
• Potential cost savings are an important reason for clients to
opt for T&CM services
• There are nearly 8 lakhs alternative therapy practitioners in
India
