• Each year, Earth Day -- April
22 -- marks the anniversary of
what many consider the birth
of the modern environmental
movement in 1970.
• The idea came to Earth
Day founder Gaylord
Nelson, then a U.S.
Senator from Wisconsin
• Senator Nelson
announced the idea for a
“national teach-in on the
environment” to the
national media.
• Hayes built a national
staff of 85 to promote
events across the land.

Evergreen trees keep leaves all
year. They are good trees for
privacy, wind breaks and hot
areas. Plant them on the
north side of your home.
Because provide shade in the
summer and warmth in the
winter when the sun can shine
through.

Short and wide trees: Grow up to 25 feet tall and 40
feet wide.

Short and skinny trees: Grow up to 25 feet tall and



Medium and skinny trees: Grow 25 to 45 feet tall and
about 20 feet wide.

Tall and wide trees: Grow higher than 45 feet tall and

Dig in! Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and
slightly shallower than the root ball.

Roughen the Soil: If your planting hole has slick
sides, roughen the sides and bottom with a pick
or shovel.

Remove the Container: Be gentle but firm when
removing the container from your tree. Making
sure to protect the foliage, lay the tree on its side
with the container end near the planting hole.
