TM1 is a multidimensional database platform used for planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. It stores data in memory on a server and allows for writing data back from Excel and web clients. Some key features include fast in-memory calculations, data compression, and visualization tools. The TM1 architecture includes clients that connect to Admin and Application servers, which then connect to underlying TM1 database servers.

What is TM1?
• IBM Congos TM1, formerly Tables Manager 1, is a client and server software platform which uses Microsoft Excel and
various web applications on the client side with an in memory, multidimensional datastore on the server side, that
allows write back from users. It is commonly used for corporate planning and reporting and analysis.
• TM1 was originally created by Manny Perez at Sinper Corporation in 1983. In 1996 Sinper was purchased by Applix.
Applix was bought by IBM .
• The most recent change has been the move of TM1 to the cloud, where it can now be hosted by IBM in a SaaS
environment and the introduction of Planning Analytics Workspace, a highly visual data expiration and dashboarding
tool with write back into the source data.
• It is used for everything from budgeting, planning and forecasting, to consolidations, management reporting and
analysis.
• TM1 is far faster than any competing technology in the market for financial applications like budgeting, Forecasting and
financial reporting. TM1 uses a very efficient, patented data compression algorithm to fit large datasets in very small
amounts of RAM. You get instant results because TM1 is smart enough to calculate only the changes quickly in memory,
and not have to recalculate the entire data model every time a value changes

Cognos TM1 Architect
A complete TM1 model is build in TM1 Architect using Turbo Integrator processes. It lets you create, analyze and manage
business data using the Cube Viewer. Administrative capabilities are only available through TM1 Architect Server.
Cognos Café(TM1 Client).
The TM1 (basic) client is accessed through Microsoft Excel as an Add-In and will allow limited access to available TM1
Servers. TM1 Client does not allow administrative access to any TM1 Servers.
TM1 Perspectives
With TM1 Perspectives, you can access data within TM1 Servers, and you can also create and maintain TM1 objects and
data on both local and remote TM1 Server. It is user interface tool and from Perspective users can enter data.
TM1 Web
TM1 Web is commonly used to access TM1-enabled Excel worksheets and reports using a web browser.
Cognos TM1 Performance Modeler
Performance Modeler as the main tool for creating and maintaining TM1 server objects. By using performance tool, we
can do deployment and adding new dimensions into existing cube.

TM1 Admin Server overview
The IBM Cognos TM1 Admin Server is a process that keeps track of all TM1 servers running on a network. An
Admin Server runs on a computer known as an Admin Host.
TM1 Server overview
The IBM TM1 Server manages access to the TM1 data directory for TM1 clients.
TM1 files overview
IBM TM1 Server requires many object and system files, most of which are stored in the TM1 Server's data
directory.
Data directory overview
The data directory contains the cubes, dimensions, and system information that are loaded into memory when
an IBM TM1 Server is started. When you access a server from any TM1 client, TM1 reads data from that server's
data directory.

5. General Information
The web clients tier allows users to access and interact with TM1 data using any of the supported web browsers. Users can work with TM1
cubes and TM1 Websheets.
Tier 2: Web application server
TM1 Web runs on a Java-based web application server.
Tier 3: Data
This tier includes the TM1 Admin Server and at least one TM1 Server.
IBM TM1 Admin server
The TM1 Admin Server can be installed on any computer on your LAN but it must reside in the same LAN segment as your TM1
Server. Typically, the TM1 Server and the TM1 Admin Server are installed on the same computer.
IBM TM1 server
The TM1 server can be installed on the same computer that hosts your Web server but installing on a separate computer is more
efficient.
The version of the TM1 Server that is used in your TM1 Web environment must be equal to or more recent than the version of TM1
Web that you are running. If the version of TM1 Web you are running is more recent than the version of the TM1 server, users will
receive an error when attempting to log in to TM1 Web.
