Anthony W. Duva serves as the director of planned giving development for Habitat for Humanity International. Planned giving, or gift planning, involves making arrangements for ongoing contributions or the delivery of larger amounts upon the donor’s death. The process allows donors to support charities by providing either long-term assistance or including them as benefactors of their estate, which maximizes gift amounts while minimizing estate impact. Gifts may take many forms, including life income plans, real estate, tangible personal property, stocks of public companies or closely held stocks.

Valspar Pledges $36 Million to Habitat for Humanity International
Anthony W. Duva oversees the planned giving development division at Habitat for Humanity International as director. He has a background in healthcare law and policy and plans to teach in academia one day. In March 2015, Habitat for Humanity International received a five-year, $36 million pledge from Valspar Corporation for supplies and funding. This included a $2 million contribution from the Valspar Corporation Foundation and will help Habitat for Humanity continue its affordable housing projects through 2019.
Team Generous 2014 Animated Short Features Habitat for Humanity
A Danish creative collective called Team Generous produces short animated videos to raise awareness for nonprofit organizations. In 2014, they worked with animators in British Columbia to create a 1 minute and 54 second video for Habitat for Humanity Canada. As a financial education provider in the San Diego area, Brian Gibbs guides his clients in meeting goals through avenues such as increasing income streams and implementing charitable trusts.
A charitable trust is a legal arrangement in which one person donates land or personal property for the benefit of a group of people or the general public through public charities, in the care of an assigned individual or collective. Donors can set up charitable trusts during their lifetime, or after their death as part of a will. There are three primary types of charitable trusts: charitable lead trusts (CLTs), charitable remainder trusts (CRTs).and Pooled Income Funds (PIFs).
With charitable lead trusts, a portion of the trust’s income is allocated to a charitable organization for a fixed number of years, with the remaining income going to the grantor beneficiaries. Conversely, a charitable remainder trust generates income for either the donor or the beneficiaries of the grantor, with the remaining income being distributed to one or more charitable organizations. The pooled income fund allows for a continuation of income from pooled contributed assets for up to three generations of posterity if desired, and tends to offer the highest current tax deductions as well as lifetime income.
Because of the tax incentives provided, people who would ordinarily be subjected to elevated capital gains tax bills for a highly appreciated asset often prefer charitable remainder trusts. On the other hand, the major benefit of charitable lead trusts is that estate taxes are reduced. Pooled income funds offer the benefits of both other types for current income tax benefits as well as estate tax benefits.

What is a Community Foundation
The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa is a public charitable foundation that channels donations from individuals and corporations to charitable organizations in the local community. It has over 800 funds and $42 million in assets. Its mission is to respond to current and future charitable needs in Greater Northeast Iowa by securing endowments from many donors and distributing grants. It offers donors various fund types like unrestricted, field of interest, and donor advised funds. Donors can contribute through outright gifts, bequests, retirement plans, insurance, and more. The Community Foundation benefits the community through permanent endowments, flexible granting, and personalized donor involvement.

Planned Giving - Supporting Charities through Estate Planning
- 2. Anthony W. Duva serves as the director of planned giving development for Habitat for Humanity International. Planned giving, or gift planning, involves making arrangements for ongoing contributions or the delivery of larger amounts upon the donor’s death. The process allows donors to support charities by providing either long-term assistance or including them as benefactors of their estate, which maximizes gift amounts while minimizing estate impact. Gifts may take many forms, including life income plans, real estate, tangible personal property, stocks of public companies or closely held stocks.

Types of planned gifts may be sorted into one of three categories: valuable asset gifts that act as a cash substitute, gifts payable upon the donor’s death, and gifts that exchange financial return benefits for contributions. Each type possesses its own set of procedures and requirements. Planned gifts also involve a number of tax benefits for donors, which include charitable and tax deductions, and exemption from estate taxes in cases of gifts payable upon the donor’s death.
