TITLE                    PLANET EARTH: RAINFORESTS

YEAR, TERM.         “1st of Bachillerato”. It is a cross-curricular topic to talk about
environment and sustainability. It will be taught the first two weeks of March, before 21st
of March, ”World Forest Day”.

METHODOLOGY Students will work individually, in pairs or small groups most of the time
although the whole class will work together to make a poster with the material they have
previously prepared. Activities which have been made individually or in pairs will be
checked with the whole class.

MATERIAL RESOURCES:           Photocopies, recycled rubber, cardboard, DVD Player,
computers and internet, teacher help.
ACTIVITIES
Warming-up: Introduction of the topic. Brain Storming with pictures of animals, plants, tribes and
forests from different countries, and general questions to think about the issue.

Vocabulary: Words and expressions to get familiar with the topic. Different vocabulary exercises
to learn words related to this topic: word-puzzle, scramble letters, filling blanks, etc.

Researching: Use of new technologies: Use of the internet to research about rainforests all
over the world. Find out about the climate and what it is like to live there. Find out about
the indigenous tribes who live in the rainforests. Explore the different species of plants
and animals that live in the different layers of the forests. Learn about the effects of global
warming, deforestation and endangered animals, plants and tribes that live in those places

Writing: In pairs or individually, students will prepare an essay about a particular rainforest
that they will choose after researching in the internet.

Reading and Speaking: Students will present their essays and images about a particular
rainforest to their class-mates. In small groups students will take part in a running dictation
about rainforest (reading, speaking, listening, and writing)

Whole class activity: Using the information they have got, the whole class will create a
poster using different materials (recycled rubber, cardboard) and techniques. Then, they
will show this poster to the rest of the educational community.

Reading, Listening and Writing: “AVATAR”.              We will use this popular film to attract our
students´ attention about the topic. We will use the English version with English subtitles so that
the students will listen and read English to learn about the importance of preserving Rainforests.
At the end of the film the students will complete a “reading comprehension” to check that they
have understood the film.
