Crowd2Map Keynote at SOTM Nigeria Dec 22
Over the past 7 years, Crowd2Map has mapped rural areas in Tanzania with over 17,000 volunteers contributing. They have mapped over 5.3 million buildings, nearly 300,000 km of roads, and over 12,000 sq km, adding over 10,000 points of interest. This mapping helps end female genital mutilation (FGM) by identifying safe houses and routes for activists. Recently, they have trained over 151 local digital champions and youth mappers to continue mapping in their villages and educate about FGM and gender-based violence. As a result of these mapping efforts, over 3,000 girls have avoided being cut, and the FGM death rate has reduced by 75%.

advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in

- 2. At PiXL International, we seek to complement the work of others in the field, such as the very welcome online publication of textbooks by the Tanzania Institute of Education and the excellent learning resources published by Shule Direct and others.
- 3. We complement others by working with school leaders and district and regional education officers to help schools improve their exam results, and we use technology in several different ways. We share PowerPoint presentations with schools, in English and Kiswahili, to outline school improvement and leadership development strategies and how to plan for excellence.
- 4. Tanzania already has excellent published data on school exam results in the NECTA website. We use Excel to analyse this data to give schools and districts a report of where they are in relation to previous years’ results and in comparison with other schools in their neighbourhood. The analyses include gender breakdowns so that the relative performance of girls and boys can be identified and any issues addressed. Schools use this data to set their own targets for improvement in the year ahead. We then analyse their mock exam results to give them reports of what needs to be done before the final exams if students are to achieve their goals.
- 5. We provide electronic revision resources for teachers to help students prepare for the exams and fill in any gaps in their understanding as revealed in the mock results. We make these resources available on an App and on flash drives which are circulated to schools by ward education officers. The resources include all past paper questions and answers from the past five years of exams, at primary, secondary and advanced levels.
- 6. We provide funds for creating revision videos which are made by ETETA with Tanzanian subject teacher experts in Morogoro region. These videos are stored on YouTube.
- 7. So the technological equipment and software we find most helpful for teachers, school leaders and education officers to use are: Their own smartphones Laptop and projectors for use in school halls. Powerpoint for presentations. Excel for analysis and student tracking. YouTube for accessing video presentations. Online sites for bespoke Maths revision resources.
