Instructions to the On-Site Supervisor: Please evaluate the performance of the candidate by
replying to the following four questions as they are appropriate to your organization and the
nature of the student’s responsibilities. Use extra pages if necessary.
1. Describe the candidate’s assigned responsibilities of the position and evaluate how well the candidate performed them.
Mr. Philip Taiwo has successfully completed his internship with the Inspection and Evaluation Division (IED) of the
United Nations Office for Internal Oversight Services. Mr. Taiwo worked initially to support the IED evaluation project to
assess relevance, efficiency and effectiveness of the United Nations Relief and Works Program for Palestine Refugees
2. (UNRWA). He was later reassigned to support two other programme evaluations of the United Nations peacekeeping
missions in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and Liberia (UNMIL).
Mr. Philip’s main responsibilities included assistance to the project teams through support with preliminary desk research,
documentation review and limited analysis. Specifically, Mr. Taiwo’s support to UNRWA included analysis of primary
interview data records, research on defined topics, and record and organize data collected. His support to MINUSTAH and
UNMIL evaluations included preliminary desk research, developing data matrix on mission mandate implementation plan,
and assist in analyzing the evolution of the mandate given by the Security Council. He assisted and engaged in effective
programmatic research and analysis resulting in useful tables and data matrix mapping the two mission mandates.
2. Assess the candidate’s intercultural sensitivity and skills in working in an intercultural context.
Mr. Taiwo demonstrates the motivation and ability to work in a multicultural and challenging environment of the United
Nations. While supporting the evaluation work on three projects, he worked successfully with a diverse group of United
Nations staff including an opportunity to work with three team leaders as his immediate supervisors all from different
nationalities.
3. Assess the candidate’s understanding of the goals of the organization and the overall contribution made by the
candidate to the organization.
Mr. Taiwo demonstrated a broad interest and was able to establish a fair understanding of the overall work of the United
Nations. During the internship, he got the opportunity to attend training programmes, and participated in professional
development courses and other activities of the organization, as well as observation of policy debates in various UN forums.
3. 4. Please add any other comments you would like to make about the candidate’s growth and development as a
professional.
Mr. Taiwo is a sincere and hardworking person, clearly motivated for a career within fields relevant to the work of the United
Nations and other international organizations. During some periods of the internship, Mr. Taiwo was given leave of absence to
attend courses and seminars on topics relating to evaluation and oversight. Whilst noting that these were given by reputable
institutions and thus appear to complement the UN internship experience by way of focus on the theory and methods of
evaluation, his eventual concentration on this field by way of a future career would require that he focus on the details of
technique. He may also consider expanding his field of interest to other areas of the United Nations work outside of evaluation.
