The five pillars of Islam are the core beliefs and practices that are obligatory for Muslims. They consist of: 1) the declaration of faith (shahadah) that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger; 2) five daily prayers (salat); 3) annual charity (zakat) of 2.5% for those who are able; 4) fasting (sawm) from dawn to dusk during the month of Ramadan; and 5) the pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca at least once in a lifetime by those who are able.
