HISTORY
01
PATINTERO
Also known as harangang-taga or tubigan, is a traditional Filipino
children's game. Furthermore, it is derived from Spanish word tinte which
means “tint" or "ink" in reference to the drawn lines. Another name for it is
tubigan, tubiganay, or tubig-tubig ("water [game]"), because the grid
lines are also commonly drawn by wetting the ground with water. It is also
known as harangang-taga or harang-taga which means "block and
catch", referring to the game mechanics. It is also the most widely played
native game in the Philippines. Because the game doesn’t need any
equipment to play it, but for an official game, prepare chalk to mark lines
on the ground and perhaps a whistle and a stopwatch to set a time limit.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME
The game is usually composed
of 5 runners against 5 taggers,
but there could be less or more
than 5 runners as long as there
would also be the same number of
taggers against the number of
runners.
GOALS OF THE GAME
All the runners should be able to pass through
the grid lines – all from the first till the end –
and back again at the starting area, that
they’re not being tagged. The taggers will also
do the job of guarding, one tagger in each grid
line, and will stop the runners from passing
through the line by catching or tagging them
using the pat or the hand, reaching the front
part of the runner’s body, NOT THE BACK
PART.
THE
PLAYCOURT
Extensive space is needed in
this game. A square of length
6 linear meters, and 4
horizontal meters must be
marked to an even split in
three dimensions.

IN THE GAME
Please keep this slide for attribution
Aside from yourself and the
playground area, there are no more
other materials used during the game.
But in official Patintero games, the
players use different colored chalks
placed on the palm of the taggers to
leave marks on the bodies of the
tagged runners and serves as a basis
that the tagging was valid
HOW TO PLAY PATINTERO
Draw a massive rectangle on
the ground using chalk for
clarity and divide it into smaller
rectangles depending on the
number of players. The
patintero drawing involves 6-8
smaller rectangles.
The players should form two
teams with an equal number
of players, where one team
plays defensive and guards
the other team against
passing the lines. The two
teams make up the guards
and the runners (passers).
The guards assign a
player to the lateral line
in the middle of the
rectangle and the other
players on each
horizontal line.
The objective of the
runners is to get across
to one end of the big
rectangle and back
without being touched
or tagged by a guard.
Types of kinetic energy
During the game, the
guards should ensure
they have both feet on
the ground before tagging
their opponent;
otherwise, it will not
count.
HOW TO PLAY PATINTERO
Once a runner is tagged, he or she
gets out of the game. If a runner
makes it across the big rectangle
and back without being touched
with the butterfly fingers, they
earn a point.
Once all the runners
of a team have been
tagged, it’s game over
The teams then switch sides, and
the runners become the guards
and vice-versa.
RULES OF
THE GAME
3
Patintero rules apply across the board
to all players. The equipment required
for the game includes chalk or paint, a
score sheet, a whistle, and a stopwatch.
The playing court should be a rectangle
of about 7.5m long and 5m wide divided
into six equal rectangles
