Summary of Prevail and Transcend Scenario in Radical...
Summary of Prevail and Transcend Scenario In chapter six of Radical Evolution, author Joel
Garreau shows through various interviews and examples that even though technology may be rising
on an exponentially increasing Curve, humans may still be able to change the effects of
technological advance in unpredictable ways. Deemed the Prevail scenario, it is also characterized
by humansslowing down once viewed inevitable change viewed as negative and speeding up
positive change. Another great theme of the Prevail Scenario is its idea that technological advance
will enable humans to acquire a better understanding of their society and nature. In addition to
discussing the Prevail scenario, Garreau also discusses the possible change humans... Show more

Garreau emphasizes this scenario by quoting Faulkner s famous saying that man will prevail
because he has a soul, a spirit capable of passion and sacrifice and endurance (qtd. in 209). Gareau
expands on the concept of the development of human nature in the chapter seven. Through a series
of interviews and examples, Garreau attempts to explain and clarify what it means for humans to
transcend and how technological advance will have an impact on that transcendence. Garreau starts
out the chapter with an explanation that throughout human history, humans have been changing
and evolving, with examples such as fire and writing. Then, Garreau describes the way human
nature is being changed: Even the least educated among us is not raised by wolves, feral and wild.
He grows up shaped by contemporary humans who own television, who have been shaped by
modern society (237). This quote further suggests that human nature may be impacted the
advancing GRIN technologies. To examine this possibility, Garreau interviewed Nick Bostrom, co
founder of the World Transhumanist Association. Bostrom shows his agreement with human
transcendence by asserting that Technological progress makes it harder for people to ignore the fact
that we might actually change the human nature (qtd. in Garreau, 242). Garreau also brings up the
topic of civil disruption from such enhancement. As discussed in the

Literary Devices In The Importance Of Being Earnest
Elinor Fuchs sees the play as a world that passes in front of the critic in time and space ; one that
has elements that must be understood (Fuchs, 2004, p 6). These elements closely resembles
Aristotle s six elements of a play plot, character, thought, diction, music and spectacle elements that
are clearly identifiable in Oscar Wilde s 1895 play The Importance of Being Earnest .
The play is divided into three scenes; acts as the author chooses to refer to them. The scene of
these actions is three different places: 1) a flat on a London city street Algernon Moncrieff s living
quarters; 2) a manor house garden in Woolton where Mr. John Worthing, J.P and his charge Cecily
Cardew live; 3) and the drawing room at the Woolton manor house,... Show more content on

Before this direct reference, the theme has only been alluded to when we notice how keen
Algernon is in keeping Lane at his proper social place a servant who does not discuss his
domestic issues with their boss or social betters. Romance is clearly a theme that the play deals
with and is introduced by the caustic reference to the relationship between his cousin and Mr.
Worthington My dear fellow, the way you flirt with Gwendolen is perfectly disgraceful. It is
almost as bad as the way Gwendolen flirts with you clearly this cannot be anything else but love.
The play is also very concerned about the issue of extravagance. Algernon is an extravagant young
man, a fact Mr. Worthington does not appreciate and tries again and again to discourage when they
discuss Algernon s culinary tastes. Through the various comments by the characters the play
reveals the authors cynicism towards the marriage institution which he relentlessly attacks as the
flippant in married households the champagne is rarely of a first rate brand and through such play
with words as divorce was made in heaven rather than marriages were made in heaven .
Characters use a light hearted banter even as the issues they deal with are heavy Algernon accuses
Lane of pilfering through a light rhetorical banter Why is it that at a bachelor s establishment the
servants invariably drink the champagne? The soliloquy is used to deliver profound thoughts like
where Algernon claims rights for

Analysis Of The Movie The Gum Advertisement
The gum advertisement is an Extra Gum commercial that was recently uploaded and aired on
YouTube on October 7, 2015 (Richards). This particular commercial has been called the most
romantic and best tear jerker commercial to date (Stern). The commercial follows the romantic
story of Sarah and Juan. Their story begins with them first catching each other s eye, to the two
falling in loveand becoming high school sweetheart s, and then continues to show their relationship
progress as it goes on for several years. During each monumental moment in their relationship, a
piece of gum is exchanged and focused on. A numerous number of appeals are present throughout
the commercial. Appeals that the creators of this gum commercial used include appeals to memory,
consistency, creativity, and love to successfully portray that love will survive any life change or
challenge. The first appealthat really makes a mark throughout this commercial is the appeal to
memory and flashbacks. The entire gum commercial focus on the memories written down on
each gum wrapper by Juan. Every time a memory is made by the couple, Juan draws the memory
on the back of a gum wrapper and saves it, without Sarah knowing he is doing this. With him
keeping every gum wrapper, it leads to the big emotional finale when he displays each framed gum
wrapper on the walls in a private room for Sarah before proposing to her. Before proposing to her, a
series of flashbacks occur every time she looks at all the gum

Native American Code Talker Essay
A. Plan of the Investigation This investigation evaluates to what extent did the Navajo code talkers
aid the American military during WWII? In order to assess the extent to which these soldiers
assisted the American military during WWII, this investigation focuses on their involvement in
transmitting military messages in their native tongue, and the events surrounding these
transmissions. In addition, the contribution of other Native American code talkers is considered
and compared to that of the Navajos specifically within the investigation. B. Summary of Evidence
Native American code transmission began in World War I, with the Choctaw Indians (Meadows,

For instance, in response to the 800 flawless messages transmitted by Navajos at Iwo Jima,
Major Howard Connor who was the signal officer of the Navajos at Iwo Jima said, Were it not
for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima ( Navajo Unbreakable Code ).
The third Amphibious Corps was thought to have been the ones to report that, during Guam and
other missions, the Navajo were considered indispensable for the rapid transmission of classified
dispatches (Paul, 69). Besides transmitting vital information, the Code Talkers sometimes
transmitted dummy messages (Takaki, 52). These false messages drove the enemy crazy, trying
to decipher them, but getting nowhere (Takaki, 52). Meadows even puts forth the idea that if
the Navajo and Comanche Indian communication units had been expanded, the war may have
even been shortened (Meadows, Comanche , 50). As stated by Campbell, In the year 2000,
Federal legislation was enacted to award Congressional Gold Medals to the Navajo code talkers
for their contribution to America s victory over the Japanese Empire in World War II (qtd. in

Navajo code talkers helped to make the United States the free and proud place it is today (qtd. In

Keeping Up With The Brady Family Research Paper
Every family s values and beliefs are different from each others. Some things that are normal to
one family, can be something crazy to another. This all depends on how a person was raised, and
what values and roles were taught to them. Through the ups and the downs every family goes,
people react differently and their true nature comes out. An example of this is displayed in the
two shows The Brady Bunch and Keeping Up With The Kardashians. While they are both big
families, they are very different. Keeping Up With The Kardashians is an American reality TV
show about a crazy and loud blended family. This television show documents every part of their

As we see in the episode, Confessions, Confessions, the children in the family put aside their
personal issues and put family first, and help their brother Peter out of a situation. While playing
ball in the house after being told not to by their mother, Peter breaks his mom s favourite vase.
Making matters worse, he has a camping trip coming up that he really wants to go to which will
be put in jeopardy if his parents find out. His siblings commit a selfless act, and take the blame
regardless of the fact that they will suffer consequences for breaking the vase. Similarly, the
Kardashian/Jenner clan put family first through hard times. This is specifically seen in season 10,
episode 10, About Bruce. This is when Bruce Jenner was transitioning into Caitlyn Jenner. While
knowing that this will be a controversial and public issue in the media, and dealing with how it
will affect the family, they did not leave Caitlyn s side once. Since they are a very public family,
they knew many people would have different opinions about this and would judge them.
Regardless, they put their fame aside and put family first by standing by her and supported her

Yellowtone National Park Case Study
Throughout the past few decades, Yellowstone National Park has undergone several amounts of
environmental changes for both the positive and the negative. The YNP has mainly had population
increases throughout the time period of 1994 2010 in areas of study such as riparian vegetation,
ungulates and also other animals. Although the decline of elkand coyotes may prove otherwise,
there is enough data to support that the majority of species in the YNP are rapidly growing.
Throughout this case study, I noticed how each species played an important role in the overall
ecosystem of Yellowstone, proving that all species are intradependant. To begin, Yellowstone
does have obvious trophic levels represented in all the species we observed in the study. For
example, the riparian vegetation (such as the willow, young aspen, and young cottonwood and
others) would be the producers, the graph which represented other animals such as fish are
considered to be the primary consumers. The ungulates (such as moose, elk, bison, deer etc) who
feed on both producers and primary consumers are considered to be the secondary consumers. The
coyotes, foxes, wolves, and bears are considered to be the tertiary consumers. Lastly, the flies and
beetles are considered the decomposers since they end up feeding on the dead... Show more content

The density independent factor of the floodplain would be that flooding can occur. The reason it
is density independent is because flooding is an abiotic factor that is unable to be controlled.
After the flooding is complete and the willow brush grows in size and quantity, this also is an
example of recruitment. As the species of willow grew, the carrying capacity also increased. This
proves that the ecosystem based on the floodplain is resilient or unable to be affected by the
flooding. As this location gained biomass from the increase in carrying capacity, the biodiversity of
the riparian vegetation also

Interventions and Care for Patients
Evidence Based Practice Paper
Evidence based practice uses current research and clinical judgment to provide interventions and
care for patients (Kelly, 2012). It is important for nurses and all healthcare team members to be up
to date on current practices so patients can receive evidence based interventions that improve
clinical outcomes. According to Kelly (2012), almost half of patients that receive care, receive
interventions that are not based on evidence which can ultimately compromise the safety of patients
and their health outcomes. Peripheral intravenous therapy (PIV) is a common practice in the acute
care setting and evidence based practices have been established to drive appropriate care for this
intervention.
Almost all patients that are admitted into the acute care setting require peripheral intravenous
therapy. PIV therapy is an important factor in the care of patients in the hospital and it is most
often used to maintain or correct fluid and electrolyte balances, administer medications, and replace
blood or blood products (Ignatavicius and Workman, 2013). PIV therapy is an invasive therapy that
requires catheter insertion into the vascular system and access is gained through the patient s skin.
Because this is an invasive procedure, patients are at a risk of developing catheter related infections.
Catheter related infections are preventable and as nurses it is our responsibility to maintain the PIV
site and use the appropriate protocols and interventions to

Legal Hustler
My Life as a Legal Hustler That moment when you realize your mother will not give you any
money, so you have to find another way to make some. A lot of you may have been in that
situation, just as I was in the sixth grade. My mother got tired of me asking her for money as if it
grew on trees. She told me that I either had to wait until Christmas or my birthday. I could not wait
that long, so I set out to make some money on my own.
My mother s friend, Casime, took me to school January 12, 2009. On the ride there, he told me
about how he use to hustle candy at school, I was all ears when it came to listening to his story.
The next day, he surprised me with a fourteen dollar box of candy, a mixed Skittles and Starburst
thirty piece pack. He told me to distribute each pack of candy for one dollar each so that I would
come out with a sixteen dollar profit. That day was challenging, especially since I did not have any
customer service skills and did not know anybody in that school.
The first day of selling candy was not what I expected it to be, I only sold two packs of Starburst
and four packs of Skittles. My products were not selling because nobody knew that I was selling
candy. The next day I decided not to sell any products, instead I used that day to advertise. I told

Germany Is A Western European Nation
Germany is a Western European nation with a landscape of unlimited woodlands, streams and
mountain extents, and 2 centuries of history. Berlin, its capital, is home to flourishing
craftsmanship and nightlife scenes, famous Brandenburg Gate and numerous destinations
identifying with WWII. Munich is known for its Oktoberfest and huge brew lobbies, including
sixteenth century Hofbräuhaus. Frankfurt, with its high rises, houses the European Central Bank.
Germanys principle districts are the Bavarian Alps which shape the limits with Austria and
Switzerland, and the South German Hill Region, the Central Uplands, and the North German
Plain. Significant waterways incorporate the Rhine in the west and the Danube, which streams
from west to east. The official dialect is German and Christianity and Roman Catholic is the
official religion of the nation. In Terms of the coin, the cash in the nation is Euros. Germany has
the second biggest populace of any European nation more than 81 million. More than 90 percent
of the general population are ethnic Germans, dropped from Germanic tribes. Since the 1950s
(BV, 2000), basic amounts of outside workers have come to Germany from countries including
Turkey, Italy, Greece, and the past Yugoslavia. Prior to the end of 1991, Germany had a remote

The Struggle Of Women s Equality
Still a way to go for women to achieve equality Summary Women have had significant changes in
their lives from the past to present in terms of employment as they are more and more being
moved away from the household, being able to work like regular men today. Proportion of
women in the total workforce is increasing and consequently they compete successfully for higher
income jobs such as chief executives. They even have been moving into jobs that in the past were
only allocated to men. While these signs are encouraging, women are still paid less than men with
a fewer rights and low protection in the workforce. The progression of gender equality still appears
uneven, although many women have seized opportunities and are slowly evening up the workforce
and deserving the equality they have struggled for ever since the beginning of the twentieth
century. Women in executive positions, even in major corporations are exposed to the daily sexist
and diminishing behavior from men, leaving women powerless and vulnerable in their attempts to
earn their place in the future society. Even though many women in their adolescent years excel in
their educational training, their achievements and general attainments are not rewarded properly
as the levels of salary are not exactly the same as for men once the workforce is reached. By a
sheer determination and eagerness to learn and improve, women are earning their place in the
society pushing the boundaries and reinforcing their rights to be

What Is Marginalization In Tourism
The Marginalization Error The Caribbean is a popular area to vacation and visit. The great
weather, the beautiful scenery, and endless resorts that people can choose from create an attractive
destination. Once on the island, tourist are graced with an amazing view of the island, great
customer service, and remarkable accommodations. Yet, at what cost? Typically, a tourist would
answer with the response of money and time being the cost. But, how do islanders feel; at what
expense must temporal pleasures be bought for tourists? In her story, A Small Place, Jamaica
Kincaiddefines tourists as, ugly things because tourist visit islands to escape their mundane lives
while islanders do not have the same luxury to watch other peoples lives like a spectacle at their
disposal (14). Other stories such as Visiting , by Roger McTair, and articles such as It s Time to
Take the Virgin Islands Out of the Closet, by Devin Robinson, share similar and eye opening
dilemmas derived from tourist marginalizing islanders and the deceitful nature that attracts tourists.
The relationship between islanders and tourists is growing increasingly bitter due to the causes of
islanders being envious of tourists affluence, resorts being deceptive in what the islands have to
offer (and what they consist of), and tourists marginalize islanders into the sole purpose of pleasing
them and enhancing their Caribbeanexperience. In the story, A Small Place, Jamaica Kincaid

The Law And The Legal System
I am the daughter, granddaughter and niece of attorneys and, therefore, have been exposed to
different parts of law and the legal system for most of my life. Throughout my childhood I have
seen how attorneys prepare for trial, the effort they put into trial, and the research and information
gained before and during the trial. However, prior to my observationof the court for this paper, I
had never been inside a courtroom. Having heard about the going ons and different processes of
the court it was an eye opening experience to attend court. I observed both the District and Superior
Courts of Rhode Island at the courthouse in Washington Square in Newport. I observed both a
female judge, Judge Hastings of District Court and a male, Judge Stone of Superior Court, judge.
There were differences between the behaviors of the attorneys and the members of the court when
the judge was not sitting on the bench, differences in the types of cases presented to each level of
the court, and differences in the behaviors of the judges.
The first court I observed was District Court. The judge that was sitting on the bench was Judge
Hastings. Soon after I arrived at the courtroom Judge Hastings called for a short recess, which
became an hour long recess. This recess gave me the opportunity to observe individuals in the
courtroom, particularly the different attorneys. I was greatly interested in how the attorneys
interacted with each other and with their clients. Many of those

Deborah Zlotsky Rembrandt Analysis
Deborah Zlotsky is known for her excellence in the artistic world. Her remarkable work of art and
style has officially encouraged viewers to associate her style of artwork and compare its similarities
to past artists such as the Dutch painter, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and the Italian Baroque
painter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Beginning with the similarities Zlotsky shares with
Rembrandt. Both paintings share a theme of performing some sort surgery in a way for the
practice of medicine. As you see in Zlotskys art work Promissory Note, the rabbit is being hanged
from its back legs while dripping blood due to some sort of incision for a pregnancy test.
Rembrandt can relate with the theme because of his most famous art piece Dr.... Show more content

For example, the rabbit in Promissory Note. While brightening the lighting on only the rabbit and
the hand holding the litmus paper, Zlotsky dimmed everything else out in the background, which is
also an example of chiaroscuro. One last similarity between Zlotsky and Rembrandt is that in both
paintings, there is a sacrifice happening in some way. Obviously for Zlotsky it s the rabbit, but with
Rembrandts painting, the cadaver on the table was an executed thief named Adriaen, whose body
was sacrificed for the medicine field. Now, the similarities between Zlotsky and Caravaggio.
These two artist share similar characteristics such as using the effect of chiaroscuro, but they
both also have an example of trompe l oeil. Trompe l oeil is a technique that artist use to display
a visual illusion in art by making it three diemensional. Notice how both the sword and blood in
Caravaggios work, Judith Beheading Holofernes, seems to be well detailed and projecting
outwards and in Promissory Note, both the rabbit and the hand holding the litmus note are also well
defined and given that three diemensional look that gives the visual illusion of coming out of the

Summary Of Grassroots Vs Treetops Of Half The Sky
In Chapter Thirteen, Grassroots vs. Treetops of Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl
WuDunn the act of genital mutilation is discussed. It starts off by giving gory details on genital
mutilation, stating that every ten a girl is mutilated. Despite the medical problems surrounding
female genital mutilation, it thrived in parts of Africa as a serious problem for young girls. FGM
is sometimes described as a femalecircumcision, it s cultural significance is to reduce sexual trends
and to make the girls more marriageable. However, often these procedures are done with no new
medical supplies and are performed with dirty materials leading to infection and sometimes death
for girls partaking. A womanin Illinois is doing her best to stop female genital mutilation by
working closely with each village and getting to the main source of the problem. Most people were
under educated about what was wrong with female genital mutilation, it was a cultural rite of

Inflation Essays
Inflation INFLATION CAN OUR ECONOMY GROW WITHOUT IT?
INFLATION CAN OUR ECONOMY GROW WITHOUT IT? What is inflation? The definition
of inflation, according to Webster s Revised Unabridged Dictionary, is an undue expansion or
increase, from overissue. Although, Webster s is considered by most to be the overall best
dictionary, WordNet states the meaning of inflation a lot clearer by saying, it s a general and
progressive increase in prices. It occurs when the value of goods rises faster than the value of
money. The usual approximate measure of this is the Consumer Price Index, which weigh the
prices of different goods according to importance in a typical budget and then shows how much the
prices of these goods have increased. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That s an incredible drop for such a short period of time. Another good demonstration of a healthy
economy with low secondary effects of inflation is time period between the Korean Vietnam Wars.
During this time the countries economy expanded at an annual average of 3.5% while the inflation
rate stayed at a minimal amount. Our central bank, along with the Clinton Administrations and
many other major economists seem to believe that any kind of growth in the economy of over
2.5% will trigger inflation. That s why so many economists assumed that with the ever lowering
unemployment rates of recent, there would be huge increases in wages and it would sharply
inflate prices. This same assumption was made because of the Federal Reserve s actions in the
past. In 1994 the Federal Reserve tried slowing down the economy in the fight against inflation by
raising interest rates. They were not thinking of the opportunity costs of a million new jobs that
could have been created, but were not, due to the economies slumping standards.
Because of this, many personal incomes that could have been increased were not. This is just one
example of market failure through the ideas of Phillips Curve and the Consumer Price Indexes. As I
stated earlier, the Consumer Price Indexes, that most economists go by to judge inflation, are not

four pigments would have higher optical density with a shorter wavelength than the longer
wavelength. While my null hypothesis was the different wavelengths will have no consequence on
the observed levels of the four different pigments. Methods: Four pigments were procured from the
technical assistant with blanks. The spectrophotometer was turned on to 400 nm. Once it was ready
to use, the pigments were passed through to spectrophotometer one by one and recorded. Once the
first trial was done, the spectrophotometer was increased to 450 nm. This process continued in 50
nm increments until the spectrophotometer is at 700 nm. After the 700 nm trial, the
spectrophotometer can be turned

cause of the problem was when Tashi had the book of Aralt and let Adrienne have it so they
could make up the Sunshine Club together and prior to that more girls kept on signing up join

Short answers
Q. 1. Challenge DeVito, O Rourke and O Neill s (2000) definition of culture using Richards
(1999) or Anae (1997). How do DeVito et al look at membership within a cultureand how does
Richards see it differently?
DeVito, O Rourke and O Neill s (2000, p.99) definition of culture is very limited when describing
modern cultures of globalised human society. Perhaps where people are isolated to villages, towns
or countries with little communication with the outside world, the definition would be completely
workable. But now, due to access of information, global trade, travel and immigration etc the world

Essay
Social amp; Cultural reality theory in action
Melissa Peters
Bachelor of Arts Student, Open Polytechnic
Introduction
How is it we know when to laugh, cry or shout? Or when it would be rude or inappropriate to do
so? Why is it we value integrity, honesty, respect...or not? And where do our religious or spiritual
beliefs and practices come from?
This essay looks at theories of social construction and their part in the development of cultural and
societal realities. We look at constructivism as a means of learning social norms, values, beliefs etc
using examples from the production Tapu (Smith and Haami, 2000). In particular we ll address the
theories of emotional construction and rule governing.
So what is social construction?
Social construction is the idea that our understanding of reality derives from interaction with others.
It refers to the way we create meaning and understanding to build collectively held beliefs. These
beliefs are called social constructions or constructs .
In the 1967 book, The Social Construction of Reality, Berger and Luckmann argue that all
knowledge, including the most basic, taken for granted common sense knowledge of everyday
reality, is derived from and maintained by social interactions. (Wikipedia, 2012).
Culture is a vital aspect of

Transformative Leadership In Social Work
Transformative leadership is a leadership style that aids employees to make positive changes
within the organization while also guiding them to become successful future leaders. Part of
being a successful leader in the human services field means helping their social service workers
recognize that they are called upon to display specific characteristics that help guide and shape the
lives of the clients they serve. In order to assist clients successfully, social service workers must
learn and understand diversity and what it means to be self aware. In addition, social workers must
address their personal values, examine how they perceive the work they do and understand how this
perception affects other members of their staff. The text... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Harry had been successful in the computer program, so much so that he stayed longer than the
allotted time that had been set for him. The length of time he stayed made it impossible for
others to enjoy the computer program. The solution to this issue was to have Harry become a
tutor. However, due to Harry s mental illness, he was malodorous and refused to brush his teeth.
His hygiene issues prevented clients in the computer program from wanting to be tutored by
Harry and efforts to send him to the self care group had been unsuccessful. During the meeting,
there was a discussion about having to remove Harry from the program to make room for other
clients. However, pulling Harry from the program could cause him to regress. Because Angelina
perceived her work to be meaningful and rewarding, she worked hard to find a solution to Harry s
challenges. However, this perception affected the relationship with other staff because people
working in other departments lacked the same empathy for Angelina s client. For example, Nigel
Melegore, the assistant for health services showed impatience and voiced his irritation because he
felt mental illness had no bearing on someone s lack of hygienic practices (Burghardt Tolliver,
2010, pp. 45 48). This point of contention caused the meeting to lack productive qualities as they
wasted time arguing with each other about the client s

Basketball and Soccer
America is a country that loves sports. Two of America s most popular sports are basketball and
soccer. Many children participate in the sports every year. Similarities are abundant between the
two. Both sports require team work. Also the main purpose of both is to put a ball into a netted
goal. However, there are some very important key differences. Soccer is played on a field that is
much larger and there is a goalie that constantly defends the goal. While basketballis played on a
smaller hardwood court with fewer players active at once. Furthermore, soccer is low scoring and
more strategic when compared to basketball, which has final scores in the hundreds. All in all,

Cardiac Overloads
Abstract
Cardiac output is the amount of blood the heart pumps in 1 minute and depends on heart rate,
contractility, preload, and afterload. Understanding the supply and the practical relevance of each
of these four components is important in interpreting the values of cardiac output.
Afterload is the intraventricular pressure sufficient to open the aortic valve allowing ejection of the
ventricular contents, Or the load against which the ventricle contracts or otherwise stress the wall
during ventricular ejection.
On the right side, it is expressed as Pulmonary Vascular Resistance (PVR) and on the left side as
Peripheral Vascular Resistance (SVR). The greater the afterload, the lower the cardiac output, the
greater the pressure of the right atrium.
The higher the aortic pressure, the higher the LV afterload. It is usually measured at the end of
systole. The most common influence on afterload is vascular tone or resistance to blood flow. In
addition, other factors, such as valve stenosis or blood viscosity, can affect the afterload. Vascular
resistance is controlled and manipulated with drugs to increase or decrease afterload.1 2
When considering post load equivalent to systolic stress, an interrelation and interdependence
between preload and afterload are revealed.
The increase in afterload ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Devil In The White City By Erik Larson
In Erik Larson s tale The Devil In The White City he utilizes chapter separation in order to convey
the plot lines of the two different stories. This author s craft technique helps in the overall
organization of the plot. In addition, the device helps the reader understand and seperate the two
stories up until the point that they relate more to each other. Larson uses the technique of
separating chapters for a logical organization of ideas throughout the entire story. A logical
organization that it is easy to understand and make sense of for the reader.
This author s craft technique is very effective throughout the story. The technique is very effective
because it helps the reader understand the events that occured easier then by putting it in a
chronological order. If the author organized it chronologically it would be easier to mix up the
people involved. In addition, the two storylines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, the separation demonstrates the good and evil that occurred during the time of Chicago
s World Fair and the years leading up to it. For example, in Part 1 at the end of the chapter titled
The Trouble Is Just Begun Larson states, Even Depew, however, did not foresee the true
magnitude of the forces that were converging on Burnham and Root. At this moment he and they
saw the challenge in its two most fundamental dimensions, time and money, and these were stark
enough (34). Then on the next page, the start of the next chapter, Holmes story is introduced as
one morning in August 1886, as heat rose from the streets with the intensity of a child s fever, a
man calling himself H. H. Holmes walked into one of Chicago s train stations (35). This
demonstrates how the technique of separate chapters and differing paragraph lengths is effective in
the portrayal of the information. In this case, the reader can see how the separate chapters clearly
separates the two stories that occured in 1890 s

American River Pirates and Their Influence on Pioneer Life
When I think of pirates, I think of the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Aden. I don t think of the
Ohio River. (Lepper) Mark Twain lived during a time when hearing someone s relation of a river
pirate in America was typical, and stores along the rivers were frequently being pillaged. He had
much experience on the rivers due to his early profession, and witnessed first hand the crimes that
they committed. Twain expressed his thoughts toward piracy through his literature, written around

in burning farms, raping women, and pillaging. After the war they were falsely accused of
murder by a man named Moses Stegall and placed in jail, however they escaped and discovered
Cave In Rock when they were on the run (Weiser). Here they captured many travelers coming
down the river and killed many of them. One time they even took a few ashore, blindfolded and
tied one to a horse, and scared the horse off a bluff of over a hundred feet high. Eventually they
were driven out of a cave by other outlaws just because they committed so many unpleasant acts.

Nearby locations were also named after the pirates that once resided there. For example, a road

Review Of Dracula By Bram Stoker
Blood Lust The amount of crazed vampire stories within this world continuously grows despite the
amount of creativity that can go into the description, and characterization of said vampires being
quite limited. There would only be so many possibilities for scenes, situations, and character designs
if authors went by nothing more than the characteristics of the vampires in Bram Stokers Dracula.
Because of this, authors continue to create more and more ridiculous scenarios as well as more
and more advanced vampires. The comparison of the way vampires look, respond to
environmental stimuli, and act in social situations in books like Dracula or The Chronicles of
Vladimir Tod, as well as book series such as Blood Lad and Twilight, is quite drastic. Every vampire
in movies or novels essentially has the same cold body functions of the dead pale, chilled flesh,
lack of a heartbeat. Dracula had these characteristics, along with being clad in black... who is

A Brief History of Religion in Englad
Before the Reformation, England was a Roman Catholic society that was led by the Pope in
Rome. Religious life followed a very traditional and structured way of life and was very much
deeply embedded in the whole social and mental fabric of the country (Russell, 1996, p. 262).
Roman Catholic s were a very visual and ritual based religion and their churches were extremely
lavish in design and contained highly decorated furnishings inside (Wolffe, 2008).
England s dissent from the Catholic Church began with King Henry VIII (1491 1547). After
Catherine of Aragon failed to produce a male heir, Henry demanded a divorce from her. The Pope
denied Henrys request which led to Henry dissolving all ties with the Roman Catholic Church and
changed the direction of religion in England. Henrys VIII motives for change were for personal
gain rather than changing religious beliefs (Christianity in Britain, 2011). A law was passed in
1534 allowing Henry VIII to declare himself the head of the new Church of England, this move
allowed Henry VIII to divorce Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn the second of six wives (Steele
MacDonald, 2007).
Edward VI (1537 1553), Henry s son, who was only 9 when made king, was raised as Protestant.
Under Edwards VI reign (1547 1553) his uncle Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset who was a
devout Protestant, was made guardian and ruled in Edwards place. Somerset together with

the topic. Some feel as though running is not healthy for you at all in the long run, and that it can
cause some serious health effects to your body in the long run. However, after getting the facts from
both sides of the argument, anyone will agree that running will benefit your health in the long run

The Existence Of God Is A Delusion
The infamous atheist philosopher, Richard Dawkins, once said that the concept of God is a
delusion and that it is something people believe in despite a total lack of evidence. I disagree with
Dawkin s statement as the existence of God can be proved by the existence of evil as one cannot
exist without the other. I believe that the existenceof evil proves that Godexists as it was this
argument that led former atheist; the Chronicles of Narnia author C.S. Lewis, to believe in the
existence of GodI believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it
but because by it I see everything else a quote by C.S. Lewis (Lewis, Proof that God exists).
C.S. Lewis did not believe that God exists because of all the pain and suffering that was occurring
in the world at that time. Atheists often use the injustices and suffering in the world such as
deaths of innocent civilians due natural disasters, wars, murder etc. as evidence for the disprove
of God. C.S. Lewis realised that it was in fact the injustices or evil in the world that proved God s
existence:
My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got
this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a
straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?...Of course I could

Business Board of Directors
2) Non executive directors are members of a business s board of directors, but are not part of the
executive side of things. A non executive director normally doesn t participate in the day to day
management of the business, but offer general guidance and a different perception on current
problems of the business. The board often seek their contribution on particular issues like policy
making and planning exercises as they are independent and will provide an impartial view. They
are appointed on their wide experience, specialist knowledge and personal qualities, so that they
can carry out four principal roles:
1.Strategy
2.Performance
3.Risk
4.People (Remuneration)
Non executive directors (NEDS) have a duty to advise, criticise and help the development of
strategy. As outsiders to the company the NEDS have a more impartial view of external factors
disturbing the business s performance than the executives on the board. This will allow them to
provide an educated contribution to strategy and act as a constructive critic in observing the aims
and strategies created by the management team.
Another key role for NEDS is that they should examine the performance of management in meeting
targets that have been agreed before, checking the progress made towards achieving the objective.
It is up to NEDS to inquire repeatedly and ask questions of management, particularly where they
have worries on the performance of the company. They are also responsible for determining the

The Fourth Amendment Of The Fourth Amendment
When the colonists established the bill of rights in the 18th century, the fourth amendment seemed
unambiguous. The government needed to respect the right for people to be secure in their persons,
house, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures and not be violated, and no
warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause. The difference between today and eighteenth century
is that many more situations have come up that weren t around during the eighteenth century. New
technologies, new threats and new circumstances have risen that may diminish the restriction on
the fourth amendment. In order to protect society from new threats and circumstances in America,
the Supreme Court expands their understanding of the fourth amendment to apply it to the new
world. The idea of the respect for privacy antedates American law. Over one thousand years ago a
Roman statesman by the name of Cicero says that there is nothing that should be less dishonored
than the home of man and it is immoral to violate his place of safety. Although this may true,
government has always had a thirst for information. One major example of this is between the
English kingdom and the thirteen colonies. Until 1768 there was something known as the salutary
neglect were Britain wasn t enforcing many of their laws. Due to the major debt from the French
and Indian war, laws involving taxes and controlling American smugglers, needed to be put in
place. One key aspect that helped enforce these

Analysis Of The Two Fridas
Frida Kahlo s The Two Fridas is a manifestation of heartbreak, inner human pain, rejection of
colonialism, and emotional journey. An oil on canvas made in 1939 in the midst of Frida Kahlo
s divorce from Diego Rivera, this painting embodied Frida Kahlo s progression at this time in her
life, dealing with what she is and what she wishes to be; as well as setting out how she wishes to
do it. An ode to melancholy and overcoming adversity, The Two Fridas is a universal, eternal
reminder of human capability. The painting is of two versions of Frida Kahlo, closely gripping hands
and sharing one heart between them. They are dressed in contrary clothing, with the Fridaon the left
dressed in modern European garb, while the other to the right is in traditional Mexican clothing.
When viewing the painting, we are immediately attracted to the left Frida, who has nearly all of the
light in the painting shining down on her. Her European clothing, popular in Mexicoat the time,
feels very constricting for both the subject and the viewer, specifically the collar grasping her
neck so very tightly. Her upright and fragile stance and her almost limp grasp of the second
Frida s is understandable as we see the gaping hole where her heart should be. The pulsating
anatomy of her wound bleeds into the room, while her face is completely indifferent. A single
vein connects the hole in left Frida to the heart of right Frida. In left Frida s unclenched hand, a
delicate pair of scissors, indicating that she had wretched the heart out of her own bosom. It is
this connection that guides us to the Frida to the right, but not before we notice the background
behind them. A gray and cloudy backdrop that seems to embody Kahlo s emotional state at the
time, it is hard to distinguish the right Frida from its murky depths. A shadow presiding all
around her, the right Frida is dressed in a traditional Mexican dress, with a posture and facial
expression completely identical to the other Frida s. The most eye catching feature of hers,
however, is the pulsating heart that the left Frida is lacking beating out of her chest. This gruesome
and oblivious picture is made only more extraordinary when we make out the object right Frida is

Oceanhouse Media
Michel Kripalani and Oceanhouse Media: Journey of a Serial Entrepreneur
Jodi Watson
Describe Michel Kripalani s entrepreneurial journey to date. What are the lessons from this journey
for entrepreneurs?
Michel Kripalani s entrepreneurial journey began after he graduated from UCSD with a degree in
visual arts media. Kripalani s first startup was MOOV Design, a computer graphics firm. He
founded Presto Studios in 1991, was the CEO and created the Journeyman Project series and Myst
III: Exile. He closed Presto studios in 2002, taking a break and traveling, and then worked at
Autodesk, a publicly traded digital media firm, from 2004 to 2009. In 2009 he founded his third
start up Oceanhouse Media.
The lessons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The brand can be one they build themselves or one that they can partner with, as Kripalani did
with Dr. Seuss and was the recognition they need to stand out in the competitive marketplace of
apps. Entrepreneurs shouldn t overspend on development. Entrepreneurs don t know how
successful their app will be until it s out there so they should plan and spend wisely and be
conservative with their ROI predictions. They should also continue to monitor their apps and
watch market trends. From this, they can apply that knowledge to creating their next apps or
updating their existing apps. That applies to developing the app as well as marketing it. One of
the most important lessons for entrepreneurs is to be passionate about their work and love the
apps they create. They should apply their passions to what they want to achieve as this will drive
sales and be a key to their success.
Evaluate the economics of the digital applications market in terms of growth and profitability. How
has Oceanhouse Media performed in this market?
Growth in the Apps Market
As noted in the case, the growth in the apps market is closely tied to the growth in the market for
mobile devices, both smartphones and tablet computers that are connected to cell phone networks.
Revenues from mobile apps have been on the rise and forecasts indicate a continual increase.

Essay on Hart, Schaffner Marx Case
Although the market for separates is certainly viable given promising growth in test markets, it is
not a market that makes sense for Hart, Schaffner Marx (HSM) to compete in. The trend certainly
shows a divergence in how some customers view their needs with regards to semi formal clothing,
but the firm runs the risk of diluting not only the perceived quality of its clothing, but also alienating
its current client base that is partial to the experience HSM offers in its stores. This experience
includes personalized expertise on new fashions, custom tailoring, and the status associated with
purchasing and wearing the company s clothes. Although data is limited to a single years sales
comparison in four different test markets, unit... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Current HSM customers tend to prefer a knowledgeable salesperson to help pick out clothes made
of quality fabric. The status of the brand is also an important distinction. The HSM customer tends
to wear suits often to work and to client meetings, and often view a perfectly tailored high quality
suit as necessary to present a professional image. Custom tailoring is also important to the
professionalism image the HSM client demands. A suit that doesn t fit perfectly is fairly obvious to
even a lay person let alone a business executive that demands a similar status from his/her clothes.
As a result, it is important to an HSM client that their clothes fit perfectly for them. As a result,
HSM suit pants come unfinished on the bottom due to the assumption of guaranteed custom
tailoring with the purchase. Also, this type of customer might also be busy during the day and
significantly value the convenience of personalized service and expertise, and be willing to pay a
slightly higher price for that convenience.
In contrast, the target customer for separates wears traditional suits far less often, and is far more
price sensitive. The separates customer doesn t mind shopping for awhile to find what they are
looking for. They are also far less concerned with having status associated with their purchase. Such
a customer might be looking for a cheaper suit to wear to a

Seat Belt Law
On Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at approximately 7 p.m., Bob Simon, a Veteran CBS News
reporter was riding in the back of a for hire Lincoln Town car to a conference in New York City.
Simon was not wearing a seatbelt when, according to reports, the taxi driver lost control and
struck a pedestrian median. After sustaining injuries to his head, torso and extremities, Bob
Simon died. New York City law does not require back seat passengers of a taxicab to wear a
seatbelt but after this latest tragedy, one wonders if Simon s life might have been saved if he
was wearing a seat belt. There are approximately 240 million taxicab and car for hire trips yearly in
New York City, and the safety of the passengers has always been a concern (O Loughlin,... Show

However, in reality, when not buckled up the dangers of that ride become much more real. As
was the case in 2003, when Governor George Pataki passed the Adam s Law, born out of the
death of fifteen year old Adam Barsel of Long Island who was riding in the back of a taxicab, not
wearing a seatbelt, when the car crashed (Lipton, 2003). Unfortunately, the legislation did not go
far enough as the usage of restraints was not made mandatory. According to the Governors
Highway Safety Association, New York is one of twenty two states that do not mandate the
passenger riding in the back seat of a vehicle to wear seatbelts. To further reiterate the importance
to buckle up, in 2013, it was reported that throughout the United States, 55% of back seat
passengers were involved in accidents were not wearing seat belts. As the fatalities and injuries
continue to rise in traffic accidents, the use of the seat belt has proven to be one of the safer crash
innovations that contribute to reduction in fatality rates (Abbas, 2011). It reduces the severity of
injury by restraining the passengers and prevents them from hitting objects or being ejected from
the vehicle. In the event of an accident, the seat belt acts to scatter kinetic energy of the body that is
released on rapid deceleration, dissipating the energy through the body

The Navy And My Master s Program At Old Dominion University
I have learned throughout my career in the Navy and my master s program at Old Dominion
University, leaders come in all shapes and sizes. Leadership is a trait some individuals are born
with and yet it is a skill one can learn, polish, and continually improve upon. No matter the case, in
order for one to become a well balanced instructional leader, one must have a central focus of
learning rather than teaching, know how to balance being a supervisor and evaluator, and finally,
they must encourage and develop professional growth throughout the organizations culture. As a
young nurse, straight out of nursing school, I was equipped with the knowledge to complete basic
nursing procedures and care for patients. However, there are some skills along my ten year journey
that I had to learn rather than be taught. For instance, there are several techniques one can use to
start an intravenous catheter (I.V.), and while I was taught all of them during nursing school, I had
to learn, upon graduation, which method was the most successful for me. Leadershipcan be viewed
in this same light. There are several leadership styles we are learning about throughout our master s
program, but instructional leadership focuses on helping your subordinates to place the emphasis
on learning versus teaching to a process or standard. DiPaola and Hoy (2014) best emphasize this
thought on page 17 through stating, by concentrating on learning, today s school leaders shift both

Copper And Zinc Reaction Lab Report
In retrospect, the practical was very easy to follow and achieved the desired results. In order to
quantify the amount of electricity generated through the spontaneous redox reaction, a multimeter
was used to measure the follow of electricity between the Copper and the anode. This gave us an
increased reliability and accuracy than using an analogue voltmeter. When it was calculated, the
reaction between the Copper and Magnesium in theory had a potential difference of 2.58v. The
Copper and Zinc reaction was also calculated to have the expected potential difference of 1.1v
whilst the Copper and Lead had 0.7v. When looking at the half equations of the various reactions,
the electron transfer direction can be gathered. The place of oxidation is the side which loses
electrons and the place of reduction, which gains them. Therefore, it can be determined that the
electron flow direction is from the anodes [ which are Zinc, Magnesium, and Lead], the oxidization
agents, to the Copper cathode, the reduction agent.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These differences across all three reactions ranged from 0.056 volts and 1.58 volts. The potential
cause for these inaccuracies are numerous. The occurrence of these inaccuracies may have been
due to random errors such as the sizes of the filter paper and meta strips, inaccurate measurements
of the solutions, weight of the metal strips. In addition, the introduction of systematic errors may
have also increased the inaccuracies in the results. Some systematic errors which occurred were:
not sanding any of the metal strips as well as not having a specified amount of time for soaking the
filter paper. These errors both random and systematic may have been minimised or highlighted
through conducting various repetitions of the practical investigation so that results can be averaged
to be more accurate and for more definitive conclusions to be

Way To Love
Are You Pleasing Others But Giving Up Yourself? By Diane Corriette Jan 6, 2009 In Anthony
De Mello s book The Way To Love he talks alot about our attachment to people and things. In
particular he mentions our need to be loved by another as if we would die if they did not exist.
When we give up who we are to please another person we do what I call prostitute our being. We
are no longer ourselves but instead begin to conform to what they want/expect of us. Even when
we think we know what it is another person wants there are no guarantees that we will get it right
so we live in constant fear of making a mistake. That is no way to live and it is certainly no way
to love. I am certainly no expert on love but the one thing I have learnt from... Show more content

are suddenly reduced to nothing worth looking at when you visit your friend. This is why
placing your status in things is so shallow and a complete waste of time.... because there will be
times when it will make you feel great and other times when it won t! It will never help fill the
void for what you are truly looking for. It provides temporary relief from feeling like nothing but
at any moment if you lost your precious thing you will drop right back down again. Plus you
have to work hard to keep it, maintain it and replace it with something better. You will worry
about people stealing, breaking and ruining it and this worry will cause ill health. How much
easier is it to focus on building our inner strength. In knowing that when we spend time on our
own personal growth we can get to a place of inner strength that will not be shaken in any
circumstance or with any person. We are connected with a Source of power that guides us and

Walter Van Tilburg Clark s The Ox-Bow Incident
In The Ox Bow Incident Walter Van Tilburg Clark uses Major Tetley as a paradigm for traditional,
masculine, southern values. When Major Tetley is preparing to hang the accused rustlers, rather
than ask questions in a professional manner, he emasculates the men. Speak up, man, [...] You re
taking it like a woman (Clark 160). The Author emphasizes Tetley s focus on masculinity even
when faced with death. It stems from the old southern idea of honor, considered important, even
when dying. After his son refuses to hang the accused rustlers, Major Tetley finds himself
infuriated and forces his son to follow his definition of being a man. Tetley said to Gerald, I ll have

From 1975 to 1980, 17N attacks were deliberately designed toidentify the group with the concerns
of the Greek masses and to capitalize on publicperceptions of American complicity in the
emergence of the military dictatorship inGreece and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. (Kassimeris,
2007, p. 131)
Simply put, the members of 17N had a very narrow scope to their attacks and their reasoning
behind it. Allowing their targets to speak for their objectives and beliefs. Furthermore,
Kassimeris (2007) points out that as 17N tried to link political activism, class conflict, and the
armed struggle (p. 132), they released their manifesto in 1977. Entitled, Appantissi sta Kommata
kai tis Organosseis [A Response to Political Parties and Organizations] (Kassimeris, 2007, p.
132), 17N s manifesto outlined claims that their attacks and movements were logical and
necessary (p. 132). Unlike the ELA, 17 November utilized high profile assassinations,
kneecappings, armed raids, bombings and rocket attacks (Kassimeris, 2013, p. 135) as a way to
crystallize public disaffection with the regime and embed itself in mainstream consciousness (p.
135). As the group progressed in their attacks and became equipped with doctrine that outlined their
motives, they believed that violence was the answer into shaping society into their pre shaped
mold. However, where the small group longed for

Businesses that have few powerful buyers are not often able to dictate the terms and conditions of
a business. However in Netflix s scenario, there are many powerful buyers which enforces the

profitable industry. However, Netflix maintains its land by its originality i.e. being the first large
scale operation of its kind. Netflix also holds the most content making survival for the future
companies very difficult. Supplier power is a measure of how easy it is for a company to raise
prices. As far as supplier power goes, Netflix has a good brand reputation, geographical coverage,
and high quality product and service with their customers than the competitors. In terms of
substitute products, Netflix has a high quality product that was developed as a result of high level
technology compared to the competition. Strong substitute products that exist in the market will
increase the likelihood that customers would switch to alternatives if prices rise. The impact of

There are many leaders in this world, for example Alexander, the great. Alexander, the great was

Although there are many leaders in this world who led people in good directions, what about the
leaders who led the people in wrong directions? For example, Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler was a
military leader, but he led people in a completely wrong direction for all of the wrong reasons.

to be with other children. Jeffrey and his father raised sheep and would garden for 4H on the

marriage began to fail.
Jeff s fascination with animals continued throughout his teenage years and he began wondering
what their insides might look like? While he continued experimenting with road kill, Jeffrey
realized that his fascination with animals went much further than just dissection. On the way
home from the bus stop one afternoon, Jeff experienced his first kiss with a young boy. He
slowly came to realize that as he dissected animals and enjoyed relationships with men, he would
enjoy intercourse and dissection of unconscious men. Jeffrey felt like he could never tell anyone
about his feelings or thoughts so he never did. At age 15 he decided that he would ambush a
nearby neighbor and knock him out with a baseball bat. When the neighbor never showed up on his
evening jog Jeffrey assumed that it was never meant to be. He never pursued that neighbor after that
evening.
At age 15 when entering high school, Jeff s fantasies and sexual desires became stronger. He

  • 2. Summary of Prevail and Transcend Scenario in Radical... Summary of Prevail and Transcend Scenario In chapter six of Radical Evolution, author Joel Garreau shows through various interviews and examples that even though technology may be rising on an exponentially increasing Curve, humans may still be able to change the effects of technological advance in unpredictable ways. Deemed the Prevail scenario, it is also characterized by humansslowing down once viewed inevitable change viewed as negative and speeding up positive change. Another great theme of the Prevail Scenario is its idea that technological advance will enable humans to acquire a better understanding of their society and nature. In addition to discussing the Prevail scenario, Garreau also discusses the possible change humans... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Garreau emphasizes this scenario by quoting Faulkner s famous saying that man will prevail because he has a soul, a spirit capable of passion and sacrifice and endurance (qtd. in 209). Gareau expands on the concept of the development of human nature in the chapter seven. Through a series of interviews and examples, Garreau attempts to explain and clarify what it means for humans to transcend and how technological advance will have an impact on that transcendence. Garreau starts out the chapter with an explanation that throughout human history, humans have been changing and evolving, with examples such as fire and writing. Then, Garreau describes the way human nature is being changed: Even the least educated among us is not raised by wolves, feral and wild. He grows up shaped by contemporary humans who own television, who have been shaped by modern society (237). This quote further suggests that human nature may be impacted the advancing GRIN technologies. To examine this possibility, Garreau interviewed Nick Bostrom, co founder of the World Transhumanist Association. Bostrom shows his agreement with human transcendence by asserting that Technological progress makes it harder for people to ignore the fact that we might actually change the human nature (qtd. in Garreau, 242). Garreau also brings up the topic of civil disruption from such enhancement. As discussed in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Literary Devices In The Importance Of Being Earnest Elinor Fuchs sees the play as a world that passes in front of the critic in time and space ; one that has elements that must be understood (Fuchs, 2004, p 6). These elements closely resembles Aristotle s six elements of a play plot, character, thought, diction, music and spectacle elements that are clearly identifiable in Oscar Wilde s 1895 play The Importance of Being Earnest . The play is divided into three scenes; acts as the author chooses to refer to them. The scene of these actions is three different places: 1) a flat on a London city street Algernon Moncrieff s living quarters; 2) a manor house garden in Woolton where Mr. John Worthing, J.P and his charge Cecily Cardew live; 3) and the drawing room at the Woolton manor house,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before this direct reference, the theme has only been alluded to when we notice how keen Algernon is in keeping Lane at his proper social place a servant who does not discuss his domestic issues with their boss or social betters. Romance is clearly a theme that the play deals with and is introduced by the caustic reference to the relationship between his cousin and Mr. Worthington My dear fellow, the way you flirt with Gwendolen is perfectly disgraceful. It is almost as bad as the way Gwendolen flirts with you clearly this cannot be anything else but love. The play is also very concerned about the issue of extravagance. Algernon is an extravagant young man, a fact Mr. Worthington does not appreciate and tries again and again to discourage when they discuss Algernon s culinary tastes. Through the various comments by the characters the play reveals the authors cynicism towards the marriage institution which he relentlessly attacks as the flippant in married households the champagne is rarely of a first rate brand and through such play with words as divorce was made in heaven rather than marriages were made in heaven . Characters use a light hearted banter even as the issues they deal with are heavy Algernon accuses Lane of pilfering through a light rhetorical banter Why is it that at a bachelor s establishment the servants invariably drink the champagne? The soliloquy is used to deliver profound thoughts like where Algernon claims rights for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of The Movie The Gum Advertisement The gum advertisement is an Extra Gum commercial that was recently uploaded and aired on YouTube on October 7, 2015 (Richards). This particular commercial has been called the most romantic and best tear jerker commercial to date (Stern). The commercial follows the romantic story of Sarah and Juan. Their story begins with them first catching each other s eye, to the two falling in loveand becoming high school sweetheart s, and then continues to show their relationship progress as it goes on for several years. During each monumental moment in their relationship, a piece of gum is exchanged and focused on. A numerous number of appeals are present throughout the commercial. Appeals that the creators of this gum commercial used include appeals to memory, consistency, creativity, and love to successfully portray that love will survive any life change or challenge. The first appealthat really makes a mark throughout this commercial is the appeal to memory and flashbacks. The entire gum commercial focus on the memories written down on each gum wrapper by Juan. Every time a memory is made by the couple, Juan draws the memory on the back of a gum wrapper and saves it, without Sarah knowing he is doing this. With him keeping every gum wrapper, it leads to the big emotional finale when he displays each framed gum wrapper on the walls in a private room for Sarah before proposing to her. Before proposing to her, a series of flashbacks occur every time she looks at all the gum ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In order to assess the extent to which these soldiers assisted the American military during WWII, this investigation focuses on their involvement in transmitting military messages in their native tongue, and the events surrounding these transmissions. In addition, the contribution of other Native American code talkers is considered and compared to that of the Navajos specifically within the investigation. B. The third Amphibious Corps was thought to have been the ones to report that, during Guam and other missions, the Navajo were considered indispensable for the rapid transmission of classified dispatches (Paul, 69). Besides transmitting vital information, the Code Talkers sometimes transmitted dummy messages (Takaki, 52). These false messages drove the enemy crazy, trying to decipher them, but getting nowhere (Takaki, 52). Meadows even puts forth the idea that if the Navajo and Comanche Indian communication units had been expanded, the war may have even been shortened (Meadows, Comanche , 50). As stated by Campbell, In the year 2000, Federal legislation was enacted to award Congressional Gold Medals to the Navajo code talkers for their contribution to America s victory over the Japanese Empire in World War II (qtd. in Hearing ). This all depends on how a person was raised, and what values and roles were taught to them. Through the ups and the downs every family goes, people react differently and their true nature comes out. An example of this is displayed in the two shows The Brady Bunch and Keeping Up With The Kardashians. While they are both big families, they are very different. • 10. Yellowtone National Park Case Study Throughout the past few decades, Yellowstone National Park has undergone several amounts of environmental changes for both the positive and the negative. The YNP has mainly had population increases throughout the time period of 1994 2010 in areas of study such as riparian vegetation, ungulates and also other animals. Although the decline of elkand coyotes may prove otherwise, there is enough data to support that the majority of species in the YNP are rapidly growing. Throughout this case study, I noticed how each species played an important role in the overall ecosystem of Yellowstone, proving that all species are intradependant. To begin, Yellowstone does have obvious trophic levels represented in all the species we observed in the study. For example, the riparian vegetation (such as the willow, young aspen, and young cottonwood and others) would be the producers, the graph which represented other animals such as fish are considered to be the primary consumers. The ungulates (such as moose, elk, bison, deer etc) who feed on both producers and primary consumers are considered to be the secondary consumers. The coyotes, foxes, wolves, and bears are considered to be the tertiary consumers. Lastly, the flies and beetles are considered the decomposers since they end up feeding on the dead... • 11. Interventions and Care for Patients Evidence Based Practice Paper Evidence based practice uses current research and clinical judgment to provide interventions and care for patients (Kelly, 2012). It is important for nurses and all healthcare team members to be up to date on current practices so patients can receive evidence based interventions that improve clinical outcomes. According to Kelly (2012), almost half of patients that receive care, receive interventions that are not based on evidence which can ultimately compromise the safety of patients and their health outcomes. Peripheral intravenous therapy (PIV) is a common practice in the acute care setting and evidence based practices have been established to drive appropriate care for this intervention. Almost all patients that are admitted into the acute care setting require peripheral intravenous therapy. PIV therapy is an important factor in the care of patients in the hospital and it is most often used to maintain or correct fluid and electrolyte balances, administer medications, and replace blood or blood products (Ignatavicius and Workman, 2013). PIV therapy is an invasive therapy that requires catheter insertion into the vascular system and access is gained through the patient s skin. Because this is an invasive procedure, patients are at a risk of developing catheter related infections. Catheter related infections are preventable and as nurses it is our responsibility to maintain the PIV site and use the appropriate protocols and interventions to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The next day, he surprised me with a fourteen dollar box of candy, a mixed Skittles and Starburst thirty piece pack. He told me to distribute each pack of candy for one dollar each so that I would come out with a sixteen dollar profit. That day was challenging, especially since I did not have any customer service skills and did not know anybody in that school. • 14. The Struggle Of Women s Equality Still a way to go for women to achieve equality Summary Women have had significant changes in their lives from the past to present in terms of employment as they are more and more being moved away from the household, being able to work like regular men today. Proportion of women in the total workforce is increasing and consequently they compete successfully for higher income jobs such as chief executives. They even have been moving into jobs that in the past were only allocated to men. While these signs are encouraging, women are still paid less than men with a fewer rights and low protection in the workforce. The progression of gender equality still appears uneven, although many women have seized opportunities and are slowly evening up the workforce and deserving the equality they have struggled for ever since the beginning of the twentieth century. Women in executive positions, even in major corporations are exposed to the daily sexist and diminishing behavior from men, leaving women powerless and vulnerable in their attempts to earn their place in the future society. Even though many women in their adolescent years excel in their educational training, their achievements and general attainments are not rewarded properly as the levels of salary are not exactly the same as for men once the workforce is reached. By a sheer determination and eagerness to learn and improve, women are earning their place in the society pushing the boundaries and reinforcing their rights to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The great weather, the beautiful scenery, and endless resorts that people can choose from create an attractive destination. Once on the island, tourist are graced with an amazing view of the island, great customer service, and remarkable accommodations. Yet, at what cost? Typically, a tourist would answer with the response of money and time being the cost. But, how do islanders feel; at what expense must temporal pleasures be bought for tourists? In her story, A Small Place, Jamaica Kincaiddefines tourists as, ugly things because tourist visit islands to escape their mundane lives while islanders do not have the same luxury to watch other peoples lives like a spectacle at their disposal (14). Other stories such as Visiting , by Roger McTair, and articles such as It s Time to Take the Virgin Islands Out of the Closet, by Devin Robinson, share similar and eye opening dilemmas derived from tourist marginalizing islanders and the deceitful nature that attracts tourists. The relationship between islanders and tourists is growing increasingly bitter due to the causes of islanders being envious of tourists affluence, resorts being deceptive in what the islands have to offer (and what they consist of), and tourists marginalize islanders into the sole purpose of pleasing them and enhancing their Caribbeanexperience. I observed both the District and Superior Courts of Rhode Island at the courthouse in Washington Square in Newport. I observed both a female judge, Judge Hastings of District Court and a male, Judge Stone of Superior Court, judge. There were differences between the behaviors of the attorneys and the members of the court when the judge was not sitting on the bench, differences in the types of cases presented to each level of the court, and differences in the behaviors of the judges. The first court I observed was District Court. The judge that was sitting on the bench was Judge Hastings. Soon after I arrived at the courtroom Judge Hastings called for a short recess, which became an hour long recess. This recess gave me the opportunity to observe individuals in the courtroom, particularly the different attorneys. I was greatly interested in how the attorneys interacted with each other and with their clients. Many of those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Her remarkable work of art and style has officially encouraged viewers to associate her style of artwork and compare its similarities to past artists such as the Dutch painter, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and the Italian Baroque painter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Beginning with the similarities Zlotsky shares with Rembrandt. Both paintings share a theme of performing some sort surgery in a way for the practice of medicine. As you see in Zlotskys art work Promissory Note, the rabbit is being hanged from its back legs while dripping blood due to some sort of incision for a pregnancy test. Rembrandt can relate with the theme because of his most famous art piece Dr.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the rabbit in Promissory Note. While brightening the lighting on only the rabbit and the hand holding the litmus paper, Zlotsky dimmed everything else out in the background, which is also an example of chiaroscuro. One last similarity between Zlotsky and Rembrandt is that in both paintings, there is a sacrifice happening in some way. Obviously for Zlotsky it s the rabbit, but with Rembrandts painting, the cadaver on the table was an executed thief named Adriaen, whose body was sacrificed for the medicine field. Now, the similarities between Zlotsky and Caravaggio. These two artist share similar characteristics such as using the effect of chiaroscuro, but they both also have an example of trompe l oeil. Trompe l oeil is a technique that artist use to display a visual illusion in art by making it three diemensional. The definition of inflation, according to Webster s Revised Unabridged Dictionary, is an undue expansion or increase, from overissue. Although, Webster s is considered by most to be the overall best dictionary, WordNet states the meaning of inflation a lot clearer by saying, it s a general and progressive increase in prices. Our central bank, along with the Clinton Administrations and many other major economists seem to believe that any kind of growth in the economy of over 2.5% will trigger inflation. That s why so many economists assumed that with the ever lowering unemployment rates of recent, there would be huge increases in wages and it would sharply inflate prices. This same assumption was made because of the Federal Reserve s actions in the past. In 1994 the Federal Reserve tried slowing down the economy in the fight against inflation by raising interest rates. They were not thinking of the opportunity costs of a million new jobs that could have been created, but were not, due to the economies slumping standards. Because of this, many personal incomes that could have been increased were not. This is just one example of market failure through the ideas of Phillips Curve and the Consumer Price Indexes. Understanding the supply and the practical relevance of each of these four components is important in interpreting the values of cardiac output. Afterload is the intraventricular pressure sufficient to open the aortic valve allowing ejection of the ventricular contents, Or the load against which the ventricle contracts or otherwise stress the wall during ventricular ejection. On the right side, it is expressed as Pulmonary Vascular Resistance (PVR) and on the left side as Peripheral Vascular Resistance (SVR). The greater the afterload, the lower the cardiac output, the greater the pressure of the right atrium. The higher the aortic pressure, the higher the LV afterload. It is usually measured at the end of systole. The most common influence on afterload is vascular tone or resistance to blood flow. In addition, other factors, such as valve stenosis or blood viscosity, can affect the afterload. Vascular resistance is controlled and manipulated with drugs to increase or decrease afterload.1 2 When considering post load equivalent to systolic stress, an interrelation and interdependence between preload and afterload are revealed. Religious life followed a very traditional and structured way of life and was very much deeply embedded in the whole social and mental fabric of the country (Russell, 1996, p. 262). Roman Catholic s were a very visual and ritual based religion and their churches were extremely lavish in design and contained highly decorated furnishings inside (Wolffe, 2008). The Pope denied Henrys request which led to Henry dissolving all ties with the Roman Catholic Church and changed the direction of religion in England. Henrys VIII motives for change were for personal gain rather than changing religious beliefs (Christianity in Britain, 2011). A law was passed in 1534 allowing Henry VIII to declare himself the head of the new Church of England, this move allowed Henry VIII to divorce Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn the second of six wives (Steele MacDonald, 2007). For many this would be a situation where you wouldn t even have to think twice about whether or not to start running long distances every day for the rest of your life. Some people have one goal in life, and that is to live as long as possible however that may be. The Existence Of God Is A Delusion The infamous atheist philosopher, Richard Dawkins, once said that the concept of God is a delusion and that it is something people believe in despite a total lack of evidence. I believe that the existenceof evil proves that Godexists as it was this argument that led former atheist; the Chronicles of Narnia author C.S. Lewis, to believe in the existence of GodI believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it but because by it I see everything else a quote by C.S. Lewis (Lewis, Proof that God exists). C.S. Lewis did not believe that God exists because of all the pain and suffering that was occurring in the world at that time. Atheists often use the injustices and suffering in the world such as deaths of innocent civilians due natural disasters, wars, murder etc. as evidence for the disprove of God. C.S. Lewis realised that it was in fact the injustices or evil in the world that proved God s existence: My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?...Of course I could have given up my idea of justice by saying it was nothing but a private idea of my own. But if I did ... A non executive director normally doesn t participate in the day to day management of the business, but offer general guidance and a different perception on current problems of the business. The board often seek their contribution on particular issues like policy making and planning exercises as they are independent and will provide an impartial view. They are appointed on their wide experience, specialist knowledge and personal qualities, so that they can carry out four principal roles: 1.Strategy 2.Performance 3.Risk 4.People (Remuneration) Non executive directors (NEDS) have a duty to advise, criticise and help the development of strategy. As outsiders to the company the NEDS have a more impartial view of external factors disturbing the business s performance than the executives on the board. This will allow them to provide an educated contribution to strategy and act as a constructive critic in observing the aims and strategies created by the management team. Another key role for NEDS is that they should examine the performance of management in meeting targets that have been agreed before, checking the progress made towards achieving the objective. It is up to NEDS to inquire repeatedly and ask questions of management, particularly where they have worries on the performance of the company. They serve the students as counselors, act as consultants to teachers, parents and administrators and coordinate activities to implement the developmental guidance program. However, in order to have an effective program they need to instill the qualities of Lencioni s model into their interaction with the individuals they serve. The first item is to build trust among students, parents and school staff, so that they feel comfortable coming to the counselors to address their issues or concerns. The government needed to respect the right for people to be secure in their persons, house, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures and not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause. The difference between today and eighteenth century is that many more situations have come up that weren t around during the eighteenth century. New technologies, new threats and new circumstances have risen that may diminish the restriction on the fourth amendment. In order to protect society from new threats and circumstances in America, the Supreme Court expands their understanding of the fourth amendment to apply it to the new world. • 44. Analysis Of The Two Fridas Frida Kahlo s The Two Fridas is a manifestation of heartbreak, inner human pain, rejection of colonialism, and emotional journey. An oil on canvas made in 1939 in the midst of Frida Kahlo s divorce from Diego Rivera, this painting embodied Frida Kahlo s progression at this time in her life, dealing with what she is and what she wishes to be; as well as setting out how she wishes to do it. An ode to melancholy and overcoming adversity, The Two Fridas is a universal, eternal reminder of human capability. The painting is of two versions of Frida Kahlo, closely gripping hands and sharing one heart between them. They are dressed in contrary clothing, with the Fridaon the left dressed in modern European garb, while the other to the right is in traditional Mexican clothing. When viewing the painting, we are immediately attracted to the left Frida, who has nearly all of the light in the painting shining down on her. Her European clothing, popular in Mexicoat the time, feels very constricting for both the subject and the viewer, specifically the collar grasping her neck so very tightly. Her upright and fragile stance and her almost limp grasp of the second Frida s is understandable as we see the gaping hole where her heart should be. The pulsating anatomy of her wound bleeds into the room, while her face is completely indifferent. A single vein connects the hole in left Frida to the heart of right Frida. In left Frida s unclenched hand, a delicate pair of scissors, indicating that she had wretched the heart out of her own bosom. It is this connection that guides us to the Frida to the right, but not before we notice the background behind them. A gray and cloudy backdrop that seems to embody Kahlo s emotional state at the time, it is hard to distinguish the right Frida from its murky depths. A shadow presiding all around her, the right Frida is dressed in a traditional Mexican dress, with a posture and facial expression completely identical to the other Frida s. The most eye catching feature of hers, however, is the pulsating heart that the left Frida is lacking beating out of her chest. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, New York is one of twenty two states that do not mandate the passenger riding in the back seat of a vehicle to wear seatbelts. To further reiterate the importance to buckle up, in 2013, it was reported that throughout the United States, 55% of back seat passengers were involved in accidents were not wearing seat belts. As the fatalities and injuries continue to rise in traffic accidents, the use of the seat belt has proven to be one of the safer crash innovations that contribute to reduction in fatality rates (Abbas, 2011). It reduces the severity of injury by restraining the passengers and prevents them from hitting objects or being ejected from the vehicle. • 48. The Navy And My Master s Program At Old Dominion University I have learned throughout my career in the Navy and my master s program at Old Dominion University, leaders come in all shapes and sizes. Leadership is a trait some individuals are born with and yet it is a skill one can learn, polish, and continually improve upon. No matter the case, in order for one to become a well balanced instructional leader, one must have a central focus of learning rather than teaching, know how to balance being a supervisor and evaluator, and finally, they must encourage and develop professional growth throughout the organizations culture. As a young nurse, straight out of nursing school, I was equipped with the knowledge to complete basic nursing procedures and care for patients. However, there are some skills along my ten year journey that I had to learn rather than be taught. For instance, there are several techniques one can use to start an intravenous catheter (I.V.), and while I was taught all of them during nursing school, I had to learn, upon graduation, which method was the most successful for me. Leadershipcan be viewed in this same light. There are several leadership styles we are learning about throughout our master s program, but instructional leadership focuses on helping your subordinates to place the emphasis on learning versus teaching to a process or standard. In order to quantify the amount of electricity generated through the spontaneous redox reaction, a multimeter was used to measure the follow of electricity between the Copper and the anode. This gave us an increased reliability and accuracy than using an analogue voltmeter. When it was calculated, the reaction between the Copper and Magnesium in theory had a potential difference of 2.58v. The Copper and Zinc reaction was also calculated to have the expected potential difference of 1.1v whilst the Copper and Lead had 0.7v. When looking at the half equations of the various reactions, the electron transfer direction can be gathered. The place of oxidation is the side which loses electrons and the place of reduction, which gains them. Therefore, it can be determined that the electron flow direction is from the anodes [ which are Zinc, Magnesium, and Lead], the oxidization agents, to the Copper cathode, the reduction agent.... In addition, the introduction of systematic errors may have also increased the inaccuracies in the results. Some systematic errors which occurred were: not sanding any of the metal strips as well as not having a specified amount of time for soaking the filter paper.
