The Flow of Energy and
Matter in Photosynthesis
How Plants Eat
and Survive
• Describe how energy
flows and matter cycles
during photosynthesis.
• Demonstrate
understanding of the
inputs and outputs of
photosynthesis through
fun group activities.
• Appreciate the role of
plants in sustaining life
and commit to caring for
Learning
Objectives:
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Photosynthesis is how plants make
their food. Just like the water cycle
provides water for life,
photosynthesis provides glucose
for the plant and oxygen for us.
Both cycles show how God’s
creation works together to sustain
life.
STEP 1
Plant cells contain
chloroplasts.
Chlorophyll, the green
pigment in chloroplasts,
captures and converts
sunlight into chemical
energy.
Absorption of Light
The Process of
Photosynthesis
STEP 2
The energy from sunlight
is used to split water
molecules (H₂O) into
oxygen (O₂) and hydrogen
ions (H ).
Splitting of Water
The Process of
Photosynthesis

+
carbon
dioxide
STEP 3
The carbon dioxide (CO₂)
taken in by the plant is
combined with other
organic compounds to
produce glucose through a
series of chemical
reactions.
Glucose Production
The Process of
Photosynthesis
oxygen
STEP 4
As a result of photosynthesis,
plants release oxygen (O₂)
into the air.
This is the oxygen we
breathe and is essential for
all living things.
