Philippi was an important city located in Macedonia along the Egnatian Road. It was originally called Krenides but was later occupied by King Philip of Macedonia, who renamed it Philippi. The city became wealthy due to nearby gold mines and was later made a Roman colony by Octavian. Though influenced by Roman culture and worshipping Roman gods, the city was home to an outstanding early Christian church established by Paul.
