Philip Larkin was commonly referred to as 'England's other Poet Laureate' until his death in 1985. Although he achieved acclaim for his small body of work, consisting of just over 100 pages of poetry published in four slim volumes over decades, Larkin took a realistic and unromantic approach to life in his poetry. His poem "Ambulances" takes a realistic view of the inevitability of death and the pain it causes. It depicts how we realize the emptiness of our lives when faced with death.
