The document describes a project to design and develop a soft robotic glove for hand rehabilitation. A team of 4 students are developing the glove under the guidance of an assistant professor. The glove will use fiber actuators and 3D printed materials to generate grasping movements. The objectives are to create a low-cost option for hand rehabilitation of paralyzed patients. The team has reviewed literature on soft robotic designs and antagonistic actuation approaches. Their initial design involves a glove integrated with string cables, motors, pulleys and a 3D printed filament material to actuate the fingers.
A Simulation Method of Soft Tissue Cutting In Virtual Environment with HapticsIJERA Editor
Currently, virtual simulation has an increasing role in the medical field. Now virtual surgery simulation has been largely explored in medical field. Virtual surgery is a good complement to traditional Surgical Training. Modeling effects of soft tissue during cutting is quite complex, hence the concept of virtuality is used to develop realistic surgical instruments for providing exact force feedback to the surgeon during surgical operation and simulation of soft tissue processes. Scalpel is a basic instrument required for soft tissue simulation. Hence we will design a virtual organ to cut by using Scalpel in Haptic Environment.

Design and control of an exoskeleton based device for hand rehabilitationHossein Hajiyan, Ph.D.
In this paper, a new exoskeleton-based design is proposed that imitates natural hand movements for rehabilitation purposes. For controlling the motion of the proposed design, we subsequently designed five different controllers computed torque control (CTC), PD, PID, and two sliding mode controllers
(SMC). It was shown that the second sliding mode controller resulted in improved trajectories that were chosen based on the natural hand movements. The proposed design along with the sliding mode controller has the potential to be used as a continues passive machine (CPM) resulting in an improved recovery of injured hand for patients after stroke or post-surgical training.
Deep learning approach to control of prosthetic hands with electromyography s...Mohsen Jafarzadeh
Natural muscles provide mobility in response to nerve impulses. Electromyography (EMG) measures the electrical activity of muscles in response to a nerve’s stimulation. In the past few decades, EMG signals have been used extensively in the identification of user intention to potentially control assistive devices such as smart wheelchairs, exoskeletons, and prosthetic devices. In the design of conventional assistive devices, developers optimize multiple subsystems independently. Feature extraction and feature description are essential subsystems of this approach. Therefore, researchers proposed various hand-crafted features to interpret EMG signals. However, the performance of conventional assistive devices is still unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose a deep learning approach to control prosthetic hands with raw EMG signals. We use a novel deep convolutional neural network to eschew the feature-engineering step. Removing the feature extraction and feature description is an important step toward the paradigm of end-to-end optimization. Fine-tuning and personalization are additional advantages of our approach. The proposed approach is implemented in Python with TensorFlow deep learning library, and it runs in real-time in general-purpose graphics processing units of NVIDIA Jetson TX2 developer kit. Our results demonstrate the ability of our system to predict fingers position from raw EMG signals. We anticipate our EMG-based control system to be a starting point to design more sophisticated prosthetic hands. For example, a pressure measurement unit can be added to transfer the perception of the environment to the user. Furthermore, our system can be modified for other prosthetic devices.
Novel Approaches for Robotic Control Using Flex SensorIJERA Editor
The aim of the project is to develop the Prosthetic robotic hand using flex sensor for amputees. The main aim of the project is to develop the robotic hand that performs pick and place activities. Here we are using flex sensors to sense the signals from artificial hand signal is transmitted and that signal is used to drive the mechanical hand. Stroke is the third leading cause of the death. Nearly 7, 00,000 people suffered from stroke last year and 2/3 rd of them survived but were left with many number of disabilities; one such disability is upper extremity hemiplegia. If the hand and the arm do not have therapy immediately after stroke, it will lose its power and muscle control, resulting in a claw like appearance and loss of function. Activities of the patient, daily living activities will be significantly affected.Prosthetic hand must resemble human hand in size and shape and must perform like human hand.

Low-cost and open-source anthropomorphic prosthetics hand using linear actuatorsTELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
A robust, low cost, open-source, and low power consumption in the research of prosthetics hand is essential. The purpose of this study is to develop a low-cost, open-source anthropomorphic prosthetics hand using linear actuator based on electromyography (EMG) signal control. The main advantages of this proposed method are the low-cost, lightweight and simplicity of controlling the prosthetic hand using only single channel. This is achieved by evaluating the DC motor and exploring number of locations of the EMG signal. The development of prosthetics hand consists of 3D anthropomorphic hand design, active electrodes, microcontroller, and linear actuator. The active electrodes recorded the EMG signal from extensor carpi radialis longus. The built-in EMG amplifier on the electrode amplified the EMG signal. Further, the A/D converter in the Arduino microcontroller converted the analog signal into digital. A filtering process consisted of bandpass and notch filter was performed before it used as a control signal. The linear actuator controlled each finger for flexion and extension motion. In the assessment of the design, the prosthetic hand capable of grasping ten objects. In this study, the cost and weight of the prosthetics hand are 471.99 US$ and 0.531 kg, respectively. This study has demonstrated the design of low cost and opensource of prosthetics hand with reasonable cost and lightweight. Furthermore, this development could be applied to amputee subjects.

Resilience Supported System for Innovative Water Monitoring TechnologyKoorosh Aslansefat
The level of intelligence in monitoring & controlling systems are increasing dramatically. The critical issue for an autonomous resilient system is detecting the anomalous behavior through standard patterns to react properly and on time. In cyber-physical systems with the interaction of humans and machines, this will be more complicated. Deceptive alarm is a common dilemma in real systems which could reduce awareness and readiness and accordingly resilience of the system. In this paper, Markov modeling technique is used to predict human behaviors patterns to distinguish between human anomalous behavior and system failure. The data is from the real experience of implementing innovative monitoring system in a five-star hotel which was part of the project of gamification for changing guests’ behavior. The idea was to develop Resilience Supported System to decrease the fault error and alarms and to increase the reliability and resilience of the system.

2016
11. • Soft robotics is a relatively recent topic. However, a wide range of systems have already been
developed, with a great number of applications (Laschi et al., 2016).
• This technological push has been closely tied to the development of new manufacturing techniques,
allowing to produce increasingly performant devices, that can even include additional functions in top of
their purely soft-mechanical behavior.
• The introduction of new innovative materials, such as self-healing polymers (Terryn et al., 2015, 2018),
or biocompatible elastomers will also lead to further expansions for soft robotics the field of medical
applications.
• The underlying manufacturing technologies already allow to tackle some of the challenges emerging
from the use of soft materials in robotics, and they will go on developing with the advances of several
scientific communities converging on soft robotics.

19. Reference from literature Review
• If motions in both directions require similar performances, two actuators can be mounted
in an antagonistic fashion, as in bio-mechanical systems (Verrelst et al., 2005).
• An advantage of this configuration is that when the combined actuators exhibit non-linear
stiffness, both the position of the antagonistic mechanism and its global stiffness can be
controlled separately (Vanderborght et al., 2013).
• When considering a system with multiple degrees of freedom, more than two actuators
can be mounted antagonistically in order to create complex motion (Bishop-Moser et al.,
2012; Martinez et al., 2013).
• Finally, some systems use the flexibility offered by tendonlike elements (Manti et al.,
2015; Rateni et al., 2015; Mutlu et al., 2016) in order to transmit forces between the
actuator and the structure.
• as buckling is generated by compression forces. Finally, some actuators rely on internal
stress, as for instance coiled artificial muscles (Haines et al., 2014) or some SMA-based
systems (Meisel et al., 2015).
