We’re proud to launch today, The Healthy Futures Report, commissioned by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and data visualisation by the McCrindle team.
On Friday Mark McCrindle was delighted to present a summary of the results at the Australian Pharmacy Professional National Conference.
The research showed that Australians place a high level of trust in their health professionals, with GPs and pharmacists topping the ‘most trusted’ list. In this era of Dr Google, the internet is now the third most trusted source of medical information, but in an era of information overload medical products information and medicine brochures are not highly accessed as trusted sources (just 17%).
While Australians are comfortable with their medical records being checked on an eHealth platform (46% have already registered or are very comfortable), with 55% of Australians happy for their full health records to be uploaded, there is still some work to be done to engage with the other half of health consumers.

Purpose and use
The Business PSI is robust not only because the measure comes directly from a survey of business proprietors and managers, but also because it measures current performance, with metrics derived from their actual earnings, expenses, staffing numbers, as well as sentiment – their economic cost and growth forecast and expectations of the 6 months ahead.
Rather than being a national measure, the Business PSI is designed to be deployed in local and regional geographies because it measures economic conditions, regulatory settings, and infrastructure in a local context. This allows for a more nuanced understanding of business performance and conditions. It gives a good measure of local economies and allows for comparison of business performance by region, across a city, within a state, and across states.
Additionally, the Business PSI is designed as a longitudinal instrument, and so business performance can be compared by region over time to get real-time analysis of local economic conditions, and so see the impact of local policies, investment, and infrastructure development, as well as measuring the impact of state and national issues and economic conditions.
Deployment
The Business PSI is a tested and easy-to-deploy 21 question survey which can allow business chambers and local governments to survey their business stakeholders at any point in time, and compare these results to previous measures or benchmark across other areas.
It also allows industry groups and peak bodies to measure their members and so gain a PSI of specific business categories (such as hair-dressers, real estate agents, etc.) or broader business categories (i.e. retailers, B2B service providers, etc.). The Business PSI results can be compared longitudinally, city by city, or state by state.
As the Business PSI quantitatively measures business performance yet incorporates attitudes, sentiment, and forecast, it provides a comprehensive measure of actual and attitudinal measures and an index that incorporates recent performance and current forecasts.
BUSINESS PSI DESIGN
The McCrindle developed Business Performance Sentiment Index (Business PSI) is an ongoing measure of business performance, conditions, and sentiment, developed from the input of several instruments.
It delivers a snapshot of how businesses in the region are tracking, thus capturing the current pulse of local businesses. The 2015 inaugural edition of the Business PSI features the results of businesses from across the Hills Shire.
Northern Territory Population Summit Mark McCrindle
Australia is growing as is the population of the Northern Territory, but the growth in the Northern Territory is cyclical, with patterns associated with employment, the economic cycle, and strongly linked to variable interstate population increases and decreases. Annual population growth rates in the Northern Territory are highly volatile, and since 1990 have ranged from population contraction to a growth rate three times the national growth rate. These volatile population growth patterns are influenced by the NT’s small population base and the cyclical nature of mining, construction and infrastructure development.

The sector that most directly and deliberately improves and supports Australian communities is the not-for profit sector. Charities are in many ways the heart of Australia and their value to this nation is demonstrated by the almost $135 billion given in the last year, most of it by the community rather than government. The esteem of this sector is demonstrated by the size of the charity workforce, which employs 1 in every 10 Australian workers, and is second in size only to retail. In addition to the 1.2 million Australians employed by not-for-profits are the 3.6 million volunteers, all of which makes charities by far Australia’s largest labour force.
While 1 in 5 Australian adults has volunteered for a community organisation in the last year, 4 in 5 adults have given financially to such organisations, with 1 in 4 giving at least monthly.
With generation change, demographic shifts and technological transformation, the landscape for charities is rapidly changing. For the average charity, half of their supporters have joined them since this decade began- and over the same period of time, the nation has grown by almost 3 million people.
The purpose of this annual Australian Communities Report is to equip leaders in the sector to respond with relevance to the changing external environment and the emerging trends. This 2017 study builds on the results from the 2016 and 2015 research and offers insights to help Australia’s not-for-profit leaders continue to create ripples of change that over time will build the capacity of communities locally, nationally and indeed globally.

More than two in three Australians (68%) follow a religion or have spiritual beliefs. Of those that do, almost half (47%) remain committed to the religion of their upbringing. The number of Australians who do not identify with a religion or spiritual belief, however, is on the rise with almost one in three (32%) not identifying with a religion. This study replicated the ABS Census question, but added in an option for ‘spiritual but not religious’. This had a response rate of 14% among Australians nationally, and the Christianity grouping was 45% (down from 61% in the 2011 Census).
More than half of Australians (52%) are open to changing their religious views given the right circumstances and evidence. Younger Australians are more open to changing their current religious views than older generations.
Religion and spirituality a popular topic of conversation
When gathering with friends, more than half of Australians (55%) often or occasionally talk about religion or spirituality. Generation Z (65%) are the most comfortable talking the topic, while the Baby Boomers are the least with 51% never talking about it with their friends.
A genuine faith the greatest attraction to a religion or spirituality
Observing people with genuine faith is the greatest attraction to investigating spirituality. Second is experiencing personal trauma or a significant life change. On the inverse, the top repellent to Australians investigating is public figures or celebrities who are examples of that faith. This is followed by miraculous stories of healings or supernatural occurrences.
Perceptions of Christianity
Australians most value Christian organisations for their work with those in need, specifically looking after people who are homeless, offering financial assistance/food relief programs and providing disaster relief (74%, 72% and 69% respectively). 8% of Australian adults (1.5 million) do not know any Christians, while for Generation Y this is almost one in ten. One in 29 Australians has never heard of Jesus.

Australia has long been blessed with stable
governments, high-functioning democracy and the rule
of law. However, what actively enables the flourishing
of our society, as reflected in this Future Donor report,
is not just government and its agencies, or even our
local communities but the for purpose sector. While
the retail sector facilitates vitally needed communities
of interaction, and our diverse local suburbs for many
are communities of belonging, it is the charities and
non-profits that build communities of purpose. These
for-purpose organisations are defined by three factors
which distinguish them from business, retail or local
communities: they are problem focussed, outward
orientated and action driven. This is why Australians,
even in this era of declining trust in institutions,
continue to hold charities in high regard.
As this report reveals, the proportion of Australians
who highly trust charities and not for profits is 50%
higher than the best performing government category
(local councils) and twice that of large corporations.
Charities should be further encouraged by the findings
that even amidst rising costs of living, most Australians
have financially supported this sector in the past year,
and of those who have given financially, more than
half (55%) have the same if not more ability to give, and
almost two thirds (64%) have the same if not increased
willingness to give.
This report looks to the future by analysing the
emerging generations and it reveals motivated young
donors who will respond to global issues not just local
ones, with a focus on solving root causes rather than
just meeting immediate needs, who want to be active
advocates not just passive givers and who can be
engaged digitally, and through that means, engage
others.
It is our hope that this report further equips the
for-purpose sector to shape thriving communities,
effectively engage and involve the next generation,
and positively impact the future.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.

(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.
