There is a growing demand among consumers for responsibly produced seafood. In response, certification standards like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) have emerged that aim to reduce the environmental and social impacts of fish farming. The ASC certification involves rigorous standards around conservation, antibiotic use, and social responsibilities. Farms that achieve ASC certification can access retailers and consumers committed to responsible choices. This allows certified farms like Hainan Sky-Blue Ocean Foods Co. Ltd's tilapia farm in China to prove their commitment to sustainability and expand their market opportunities. The ASC logo provides a competitive advantage and assurance to consumers that their purchase positively contributes to ocean health and communities. As demand for traceability and certification rises, it

In Spring 2013, we are on the precipice of dramatic, disruptive change in the health field that offers an unprecedented opportunity and challenge to transform health care and population health.
We know that traditional public health approaches along with more and better health care are not enough to improve health outcomes, equity, and cost. We must also:
- implement sustainable, fundamental "upstream" changes that address the root causes of disease and disability; and
- transform the way we deliver health care to ensure access to quality, affordable health care for all.

Food and Beverages Sustainability
Concept
According to the Worldwatch Institute(2009) the major problem in the global food production system is in the unsustainable inputs that are sued.
As a result, many forms of environmental degradation occur; falling water tables, deterioration of pasture, soil erosion.
The Western diet, with its high consumption of fish, meat and dairy products is endangering the environment; croplands are diminishing and the ocean’s fish stocks are in decline.
These grim warning signs are matched with some positive signs of awareness in society for health, environmental stewardship and animal welfare.
As a response to the problems being caused by conventional farming techniques the term sustainable food is now used to describe food production that does not take more natural resources than it gives back.
Sustainable food producers see nature as an ally rather than as an obstacle, they are able to produce wholesome food in symbiosis with nature and the surrounding community.
Uk government Sustainable Development Commission, Sustainable food is:
Safe, healthy and nutritious, for consumers in shops, restaurants, schools, hospitals, etc. And can meet the needs of the less well-off people.
Provides a viable livelihood for farmers, processors and retailers, whose employees enjoy a safe and hygienic working environment whether in the United Kingdom or overseas.
Respects biophysical and environmental limits in its production and processing, while reducing energy consumption and improving the wider environment; it also respects the highest standards of animal health and welfare, compatible with the production of affordable food for all sectors of society.
Supports rural economies and the diversity of rural culture, in particular through an emphasis on local products that keep food miles to a minimum.
The term sustainable food may not sound exciting as a description but catering businesses who develop processes to improve the sustainability of the food they offer stand a better chance of meeting the growing demands of individual consumers.
Once the domain of students and hippies the movement has moved into mainstream society and is represented by some very prominent industry players
example
Starbucks, has started selling four categories of what it calls “sustainable coffees”.
The nature of sustainable food often means that they are more expensive than other types of food.
Inevitably, there is a danger that restaurant operations seeking to provide clients with sustainable food choices may increase prices.
There is limited evidence that individual restaurant consumers are prepared to both purchase and pay a premium for sustainable food products.
Consumer attitudes toward sustainable food
Although consumer awareness of sustainability is growing, it is not yet making a huge difference to what customers choose to buy when they shop for food or sit down to eat in a restaurant.

Eco-Labels for Capture Fisheries
Eco-certification schemes for capture fisheries have existed for around 20 years, driven by the growing concern of the state of global fish stocks, increasing consumption of seafood and a perception that public mechanisms at the regional, national and international levels are failing in ensuring the sustainable management of marine resources (OECD, 2012). The intent of eco-certification schemes is to improve fisheries sustainability through market based incentives. Eco-labels provide a link between marketing and management and are playing an increasingly important role in fisheries sustainability. To be able to use an eco-label on capture fisheries products, the fishery wishing to use the eco-label must be assessed by a third party on sustainability standards developed by the eco-label organization. If the fishery is found to comply with the standards after a full assessment, then the fishery is certified and allowed to use the eco-label on its seafood products.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program: Promoting Ethical ConsumptionSustainable Brands
Jim Hekkers of the Monterey Bay Aquarium discusses the Seafood Watch program, an educational initiative to empower consumers and businesses to make sustainable choices for healthy oceans. It started as an exhibit along with food service menu recommendations, husbandry feed changes, and developed into a guide following member requests. Jim explains with graphs and data how dramatically the biomass of table fish has fallen in just 100 years, the percentage of seafood imports in the U.S., how the guide's recommendation categories work, assessment criteria for capture fisheries and aquaculture, the guide's distribution, partners, and corporate relationships with food service companies, retailers, and suppliers.

1. hroughout Asia, just as in the
rest of the world, an interest in
healthy eating has led to a rise
in demand for food and drinks
of higher quality. Consumers
are now making the effort to find out where
their food comes from, subsequently driving
the trend for transparency within the food
industry, as reflected by the emergence of
labels, sustainability claims and eco-signs.
Meaningful labels and explanatory
packaging can provide straightforward
information to help consumers make
informed choices. Food packaging these
days will list exactly what ingredients are
contained in the product, including sources
from which the ingredients originate, aiming
to provide consumers with a clear, complete
and accurate description of the contents.
More Standards Available
No sector of the food industry has been
left untouched by the growing demand for
responsibly produced food. Considering
the limited amount of resources available
and the possible threat of extinction faced
by some species, responsibly sourced
seafood is of particular interest to the
public. In response to this, food producers
are beginning to adopt sustainability
standards and certifications to demonstrate
the environmental merits of their products.
Consequently, hundreds of ecolabels and
other standards have surfaced to meet
the demand. In the seafood industry,
reputable standards organisations such as
the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)
offer certification and ecolabels that can
offer consumers extra peace of mind when
it comes to buying seafood.
The ASC Certification
An independent, international
organisation, the ASC aims to transform the
aquaculture industry to a higher standard
through a global certification and labelling
programme. ASC certification helps reduce
the environmental and social impacts of
aquaculture, which is vital to ensuring a
steady supply of quality fish in the future.
ASC standards focus on good management
practices covering the conservation and
quality of water resources, no misuse of
antibiotics, minimising escapes as well as
compliance with strict feed requirements
and social responsibilities. The certification
system meets international codes of good
conduct, including FAO Guidelines for eco-
labelling and ISEAL Standard Setting Codes.
All fish farms that attain ASC
certification adhere to strict social and
environmental standards and, as these
farms gain certification, they gain access
to retailers and consumers committed to
making responsible choices that positively
influence the environment. In addition
to the program for farm certification,
producers and retailers can apply for a chain
of custody license to use the ASC logo on
menus, packaging, and marketing materials
to show their customers that the product
originates from a responsible source.
Greater Opportunities
Farms voluntarily apply for the ASC
programme and, if they pass a stringent
assessment process, they can sell their
products as ASC certified. Hainan Sky-
Blue Ocean Foods Co. Ltd’s tilapia farm,
Qionghai Zhongpingzi Grobest, which is
based in Hainan Island, was one of the first
Chinese farms to achieve ASC certification.
According to Mr. Yang Hua-Ying, Deputy
Executive Director, Hainan Sky-Blue Ocean
Foods Co. Ltd, it was important for Grobest

the programme and to achieve ASC
certification.
Being vertically integrated from
feed to aquaculture to processing, the
company ensures that they minimise
their environmental impact at each stage.
These responsible practices translate to
an increase in opportunities
to access the market.
Mr. Yang Hua-Ying
explains, "The
ASC certification
allows us to prove
to our customers
that we are committed to
responsible aquaculture. ASC certification
is like a boarding pass, granting the
aquaculture producer a sustainable flight
to reach the worldwide consumer.”
The ASC is a market-based programme,
designed to create incentives and reward
responsible farming practices. It also
promotes and rewards responsible fish
farming though the use of the ASC on-pack
logo. The ASC logo provides companies
with a competitive advantage. The logo is
proof of achievement in a market leading
programme for the production of quality
farmed seafood. As European retailers and
food service providers, in particular, are
keen to buy ASC certified products, Asian
products with the ASC logo will be better
able to gain access to western markets.
Consumer Empowerment
Clean labelled products empower
consumers in the same way ASC labelled
products empower buyers with the choice
to support farmers who share their values
and give them confidence that their
purchases will make a positive contribution
to the oceans’ health, the local ecosystem
and workers’ rights. The logo assures
buyers that the fish they purchase has been
responsibly sourced, with minimal impact
on society and the environment, and is fully
traceable back to a well-managed farm.
This way, the logo provides a clear message
to consumers that they are making the right
choice for themselves and their families.
A Permanent Change
Indeed, a considerable amount of the
man-made pressures on the environment
are the result of food consumption and
production trends and patterns, which
fundamentally change the way food is
produced, processed, transported and
consumed. As more farmers choose to
produce responsibly and more companies
choose to source from these responsibly
producing suppliers, the number of farms in
the programme will grow and the benefits
of the programme for the environment and
local communities will extend accordingly.
The demand for products to meet these
requirements is growing, and it is clear that
the interest in traceability and certification is
not a trend. What we are seeing now is the
beginning of a shift in how consumers make
choices about fundamental matters that
are important not only to their health but
also that of their families, the community
and the environment. Major manufacturers
and suppliers are also starting to make
commitments to adopt certification for
their whole supply chain or product
offering, rather than a single product line
or ingredient. FBA
