The Food Areas Of The United States Essay
As the population increases and urbanization continues to develop and become more popular, an
important, life sustaining product is left behind. Most relevant in western civilization, the
scarcity of locally grown and produced food is a problem that exists, whether people realize it or
not. Per the Food Access Research Atlas, provided by the United States Department of
Agriculture, there are 8,959 food deserts in the united states as of 2010 В№. An Urban Food
desert is any location deprived of supermarkets and other access to fresh fruits and vegetables,
which usually plagues places of lower socioeconomic status. The low demand for food is
attributed to lack of affordability and education, and perceptibly retailers ought not bring their
business to places with very little demand for the product. If these deserts are ever to be omitted
from the world, it is not enough to hope for the eventual emergence of supermarkets or farms,
communities must work together to improve their range of reachable sustenance. It is every person
s duty, as a member of humanity, to aid in fixing the problem and ultimately improving the world,
which gives way to defining the common good approach to ethical reasoning. Using the common
good approach, a simple, yet collectively beneficial solution is the emergence of local gardens
/greenhouses, which would largely combat the detrimental dining options of an urban food desert.
If the movement to a more horticultural lifestyle is ever to work, first,

Essay about The history of Detroit Diesel
Have you ever wondered how Detroit Diesel has become what it is today. Detroit Diesel
Corporation manufactures diesel and alternative fuel engines for use in trucks, buses, commercial
and pleasure marine craft, military and so on. This is how Detroit Diesel has progressed over the
years with engines and help of other distributors and dealers.
The history of Detroit Diesel started in 1938 just as WWII was heating up. In the same year
General Motors formed the GM Diesel Division which is the ancestor of Detroit Diesel. This was
an epic time when tradition of strength, quality, and dependability was born.( Detroit Diesel )
After the war had ended, GM Diesel recognized the growing opportunity in the on highway truck
market. In 1957, GM ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The incentive to develop such engines came from the idea to replace steam in the locomotive
industry. Alfred P. Sloan, president of GM during the 1920s 1930s said that Charles F. Kettering
can be credited with the foresight and drive behind the practical diesel power. Kettering
supervised experiments at GM as early as 1921 to develop a smaller, more efficient diesel. The
small, practical GM diesel engine might have never been developed is Kettering hadn t been a
yachtsman. Kettering purchased a diesel engine for his yacht and was so impressed, he convinced
Sloan to buy the Cleveland, Ohio company named Winton that made the engine. After this, GM
began to develop a diesel powered locomotive engine during the 1920s and 1930s. (Detroit Diesel
Corporation)
Locomotive companies where impressed with the power and efficiency of the engines compared to
the steam locomotives they had been operating for years. No other major manufacturer built a
diesel locomotive engine until after WWII. The importance of the railroad began to decline after
WWII , but Detroit Diesel had already moved into the trucking industry. Detroit Diesels main
competitor in the post years, Cummings Engine Co. , began to fight seriously for market share in
the 1960s. However, the trucking industry was booming and there

The bank at some point received negative attention for issuing credit to arms companies, including
companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Textron, Colbun, BAE Systems and

labor rights violations scandals, for instance Wal Mart and Total USA. This negative attention may
lead to loss of investor confidence in the bank.
Santander Bank has also received enforcement action from the Federal Reserve, with orders to
have the bank improve its risk management practices. Santander has already been struggling with
this issue. The bank s capital plan was also rejected by the Federal Reserve during the second
phase of a stress test carried out on the 31 largest US banks, limiting the bank from distributing its

Analysis Of The Picture Of Dorian Gray

Irony in The Picture of Dorian Gray
More often than not, it is hard to face the consciousness of the inevitable. Everyone feels the
distress of realizing that time is fleeting and they will soon grow old and wrinkly, no longer their
youthful self. The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, illustrates this human condition
specifically through the main character Dorian Gray. Mr. Gray captures the artistic imagination
of artist Basil Howard, who constantly paints portraits of Dorian. Basil usually depicts Dorian as
an ancient Greek hero or a mythological creature, but when he completes his first portrait of
Dorian for who he truly is he is disappointed because he feels as though this painting reveals too
much about his subject. Dorian on the other hand goes to the extreme when he sees this portrait.
Worrisome, Dorian believes that one day the portrait will remind him of his former beautiful and
young self. Out of anguish, he curses the portrait, ultimately selling his soul to spare himself of
the burdens of age and infamy, allowing him to stay forever young. In his novella, The Picture of
Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde uses irony to exemplify an anomaly between the aging process of Dorian
Gray in contrast with that of the portrait of himself, particularly in a society that prizes beauty and
youth.
Dorian s first big act of cruelty begins when he inconsiderately calls of his engagement with Sibyl
Vane, a beautiful actress. Sibyl

The Best Moment Of My Life
Tic! Tic! Tic! Jerry was about to go down. The best moment of his life. His best friend was right
next to him about to experience the same as he. Ah! It was all a dream. He woke up and ran
downstairs ready to munch on some breakfest. He saw his mom making bacon and eggs (his
favorite). After he ate his breakfast he was excited to get a call from his best friend John who
had a lot of questions. Finally John asked, Can you go to the amusement park today? Jerry
replied fast as lightning, I ll ask my Mom. Jerry bolted out of his room to the living room. He

The Pros And Cons Of Solar Energy
Even though only a small amount of the sun s heat ever reaches Earth, it is enough to power the
whole world. Solar energy is always being provided to us by the Sun. Solar energy can be
converted into electricity and heat. It helps provide the warmth necessary for people, plants, and
animals to survive. With the help of today s technology, scientists have found a way to use the sunto
help us in our everyday lives. The idea of solar energyhas, resulted in the use of solar power. Thus,
it could lead to a more modernized and efficient society. Solar energy is a renewable resource
and is converted to electrical energy in two ways: by using photovoltaic materials or the thermal
process. The photovoltaic method, generates electric power by using the solar energy to convert
energy from the sun into a flow of electrons. (Sethia, et al., 2017). The thermal method is a
process that uses the energy from the sun to heat a working fluid in an electric generating cycle.
Solar energy is one of the most important sources of energy we could have because it is a non
polluting energy. This, in turn, helps in lessening the greenhouse effect. The most popular way to
use solar energy is through the use of solar panels. To generate the high temperatures necessary to
make steam to generate electricity, the sunlight must be concentrated. Solar thermal technology
often uses reflectors in the form of parabolic concentrators or flat mirrors to focus the sun s rays
onto a water filled pipe.
While at work, I was also able to interview a customer who used to be in the solar panel business.
His name is Henry Caldwell, and he used to work for Turnbull Contracting, LLC, in Bowling
Green, Missouri. During the interview, I was able to learn about the different systems they offer,
and some types of solar panels available. The two systems available from Turnbull Contracting are
the string inverter and the micro inverter. First, the string inverter is the most basic out of the two.
The string system would be ideal for homes and businesses that have direct sunlight and openings.
The panels in this system are all chained together so that when one panels gets shade, it also impact
the other panels. However, the micro inverter is more up to date

The Inferno, By Dante
Throughout the Inferno, Dante has often presented characters in a way that reflects his own
personality: there is the amorous and suicidal Dido for whom he shows sympathy and gives a
lesser punishment, while there is the suicidal Pier delle Vigne to whom he gives a much harsher
punishment. This difference in placement should reflect a strict moral code that agrees with a pre
established divine order, and yet Dante demonstrates such obvious favoritism. Why? Dido loved
Aeneas too much, as Dante loved Beatrice. Therefore, Dante can easily sympathize. Similarly, when
Dante faces Francesca da Rimini and her lover Paolo, he experiences an immense amount of
understanding and compassion yet they are there in Hell. While these characters may come... Show

In the Commedia, Dante depicts himself as a prophet (for which God s word is the Commedia
itself) who undergoes a learning experience that transforms him into a perfect prophet who is able
to convey God s word without doubts or reservations. This transformation occurs gradually as Dante
learns from various characters he meets throughout the journey, but probably the greatest
contributor to this transformation is Ulysses. In Canto XXVI, Dante focuses on major themes
regarding his spiritual condition in order to contrast Ulysses spiritual condition, some of which
include the cause for damnation or salvation, a poetic and/or prophetic authority, and flight. The
primary source of similarities between their spiritual states can be found in Dante s Convivio,
which employs a much more philosophic and empirical perspective that ultimately led Dante into
the selva scura as seen in the beginning of the Commedia. The Commedia itself is meant to turn
those similarities into differences and thereby convince the reader of his transformation from
Convivio to the Commedia. In Canto XXVI, as Dante the pilgrim converses with Ulysses through
Virgil while assuming that Virgil understands that which Dante wishes to ask it is important to note
Dante s enthusiasm for coming to understand the history and sins of each character he meets:

A Comparison Of Catch 22 And Captain Corelli s Mandolin
In Catch 22 and Captain Corelli s Mandolin, both authors suggest the unsettling idea that life holds
no universal conclusion because in actuality life is the continual clash of absolutes and therefore
refuses the reader the comfort of closure . Both novels handle the difficult subject of war using
similar postmodernist techniques to display it, such as fragmented narratives. However their
intentions and ideas of war are extremely different creating interesting comparisons.
De Bernier s novel, Captain Corelli s Mandolin, published in 1994, but set during the second world
war, is composed with multiple narratives, far from the omniscient narrator often found in 19th
century literature. Instead De Bernier s uses an amalgamation of formats ... Show more content on

When considering war we believe there is a good and a bad side, in the Second World War most
would conceive the Nazis to unequivocally be the enemy and therefore immoral. Perhaps this is
why the chapter The Good Nazi , in Captain Corelli s Mandolin, immediately unsettles the reader
as there is no irony in this statement. De Berneires presents Gunter Weber full of innocence and
as someone who has simply absorbed the propaganda of the Nazis. We see his innocence portrayed
in The Good Nazi ; Weber was a twenty two year old man and had never seen a woman naked
before...Weber was a still a virgin . The simplicity of De Bernier s language here reflects the
simplicity of Weber as a character. Weber causes us to question the limitations of our own heroism
or our capacity to see beyond propaganda. It could be argued that rather than the good Nazi he
represents the ordinary Nazi, he accepts what the state has told him as that is the easiest path. By
presenting us with someone who is ordinary it unsettles the reader as it draws a bond between the
reader and the character. Rather than blaming and seeing him as monstrous and all the other
preconceptions society holds against Nazis, we instead see qualities of ordinary humanity and
ourselves in him. Dr. Iannis statement, there would be no tyranny, Captain, and no wars, if minions
did not ignore their conscience . Is conceivably there to further

Naturalism In To Build A Fire
The novel To build a fire written by Jack London is based on the naturalism, which is a type of
literature that is focused on Darwinian s theory, survival of the fittest . It can be interpreted as your
will exists, but this will is enslaved by beyond your control. Naturalistic writing came out about in
19th century, and it was profound ideology stemming from realism. Generally, the naturalism based
stories themes are man against natureor awakening that nature is indifferent to men. In this novel,
the author wanted to show humans vulnerability since the story shows how the main characteris

Victim Blaming Sociology
The phenomenon of victim blaming is a multifaceted topic with far reaching consequences. The
tendency to blame innocent victims stems from a need to cope with threats to our concept of
reality. People generally prefer to consider the world to be just a concept that indicates that people
get what they deserve. This just world view is very integral to the worldview of most people, so
when it is threatened, individuals employ defensive strategies to reestablish a sense of justice in the
world (Hafer, 2000). Blaming the victimin some capacity for misfortunes that befall them is a
convenient way to reestablish a just world view. Such misattribution of blame institutes the
possibility that victims of crimes or disease will be mistreated and... Show more content on

It is more likely that a person will engage in victim blaming when the victim in question is an in
group member in some capacity. When a person whom is perceived as belonging to one s in
group is victimized, one s perception of the just world is more likely to be threatened (Correia
Vala, 2003). This is because observers wish to believe themselves as invincible to the same types of
misfortune as those who are victimized, and the more similarities between the observer and the
victim, the more the observer may question this perception of invincibility (Goldenberg Forgas,
2012).
Mood Induction When an individual engages in victim blaming practices, they are attempting to
alleviate psychological discomfort. It is reasonable to suggest, then, that pre existing states of
mood may influence the likelihood of blaming the victim. Mood as resource theory indicates that
a positive mood acts as a resource, which individuals may draw upon when presented with
situations that threaten their world view (Raghunathan Trope, 2002). Because of this, a person in
a positive mood is less likely to engage in victim blaming, while a person in a negative mood is
more likely to engage in victim blaming.

Plessy V. Ferguson Case Analysis
Before the Union victory in 1865, Congress assembled for the challenges the United States would
face at the war s end, particularly the integration of four million emancipated African Americans
into the country. The Congressional Reconstruction period generated the Thirteenth, Fourteenth,
and Fifteenth amendments into the United StatesConstitution. These amendments extended legal
and civil protections to former slaves. These three amendments were foundation of the civil rights
movement; because it gave new constitutional protections to African Americans, though the
struggle to fully achieve equality would continue into the future, it led the civil rights movement on

the right for states to pass laws allowing racial segregation in public and private institutions such
as schools, public transportation, restrooms, etc. The Plessy v. Ferguson case was important in the
course of United States history, because its outcome upheld the belief that racial segregation was

The beginning of the 20th century brought radical changes to the social and political structure of
autocratic Russia. It was a period of regression, reform, revolution and eradication. Eradication of
a blood line that had remained in rule for over 300 years; the Romanov Dynasty. The central figure
of this eradication was Tsar Nicholas II, often described as an incompetent leader, absent of the

The 1905 revolution can be considered as the pinnacle event that accelerated the downward
spiral of Tsar Nicholas s rule and Russia s adherence to their little father . From this point
onwards Nicholas was referred to by the people as not their little father but Nicholas the Bloody
. The present ruler has lost absolutely the affection of the Russian people, and whatever the
future may have in store for the dynasty, the present tsar will never again be safe in the midst of
his people. (The American consul in Odessa). This revolution was an uprising of people from all
levels of society and was not an uprising organised by any group in particular. The Bolsheviks
played a minimal role in the 1905 revolution as most of their leaders were living in exile and their
impact and influence on the workers in that year was weak as well as having no Duma faction. This
demonstrates that the Bolsheviks had a minor role in the pinnacle events that led to the downfall of
the Romanov dynasty but rather gained support after Nicholas abdication.
The years following the 1905 revolution seemed to show a lull amongst the people but unrest soon
returned to the cities. In the months leading up to WWI, St. Petersburg was paralysed by strikes,
with workers and police officers fighting hand to hand battles on the street.

How Does Toni Morrison Use Biblical Allusions In Song Of...
Toni Morrison utilizes biblical references and symbolization to depict the imprisonment of
African American people after slavery in her novel, Song of Solomon. Particularly, Morrison s
characters each fall victim to themselves as a result of societal expectations in a way that parallels
the actions of the people that a character s name corresponds with. Accordingly, each character
deals with their oppression in a way that corresponds with their biblical counterparts, and in some
cases, to prevent themselves from the oppression in which their biblical counterparts fall victim to.

Corinthians is first depicted to the reader as a child, playing with rose petals with her sister, Lena,
right as a doctor, Mr. Smith, attempts to fly and jumps off of the roof of Mercy Hospital. The fake
rose petals that Corinthians is playing with at this time connect her to Mr. Smith as both characters
pursue dreams of freedom; in Corinthians case, pursuing love with others to escape societal
oppression, and in Mr. Smith s case, pursuing flight to escape racism. The rose petals, therefore,
begin to symbolize the pursuit of love for Corinthians and its impossibility. Corinthians,
however, also takes on the symbolism of Paul s letter to the people of Corinth in the Bible as
like them, she would [violate her own sense of morality] to escape the velvet. (Morrison 198)
Corinthians first chance at love comes in the form of, Henry Porter, a poor landworker who pays
rent to Corinthians father, Macon Dead II. Although he admits his love for her, she is initially
willing to forsake her dreams of finding love to fit in with society because having a relationship
with a poor man would diminish her image to her family. Corinthians willingness to discriminate
and forsake morality parallels the actions that the people of Corinth exhibited in First Corinthians
of the New Testament as Paul, the writer of First Corinthians, writes the book to criticize the
people of Corinth for hypocritically exhibiting prejudice towards their own people. Particularly,
Paul noted that they were rude and discourteous to poorer Christians similar to how Corinthians
rejects Henry Porter due to his lack of wealth. However, Corinthians eventually forsakes her
prejudice towards the poor and has an affair with Porter which she hides from her family. This

contempt aspect of Populism by dwelling on the threats posed by outsiders . He establishes his
rhetoric on the basis of a hierarchy existing in the country and that certain groups who are true
American should reap the rewards that have been denied to them. He claims to be the mouthpiece
for the common man who has been ignored by the government and deserve to be heard. Throughout
the American rhetoric, Populism echoes the Lockean liberal thought of liberal thought of the social
contract, the emphasis on the Republic for the common person, and the patriotism stemming from
Providentialism and Ascriptive Americanism.
Overlooking such an influential style of thought would disregard the reforms Populism had inspired
as a safeguard for the common man. Further, Populism is a product of aspects of Liberalism,
Republicanism, Providentialism and Ascriptive Americanism. These elements are still influential in
modern day America, which have had both positive and negative effects on American life Populism
needs to be included as part of the United States rhetoric because of its impact on

Subculture And Its Impact On Society
Subculture refers to a minority of individuals who adhere to different rules, dress codes and lifestyle
choices from mainstream culture. Throughout this essay the traditional definitions of subcultures,
that mainly concentrate on class and style as their main features, will be looked at and explained. It
will then be demonstrated how these ways of thinking are no longer relevant to the 21st century
therefore the term subcultureneeds to be rethought for it to be an applicable category in the 21st
century.
The term youth subcultures was first made and studied at the University Of Chicago in America
(Blackman, 2003) . The school was of the sociological discipline and looked at subcultures as
deviant groups, much of the research was conducted on gangs. The theorists were in disagreement
with the picture the mass media had been painting about youth. This picture was of a homogeneous
group in which class was not a factor and all youth adhered to one unified culture (Dvarionaite,
2015). Early American theorist of the Chicago school believed class was a leading factor as to
why there was social disorganisation. Albert K. Cohen went on further to explain how class created
divisions in society. Cohen described subcultures as emerging when, a number of actors with
similar problems of social adjustment interact with one another and innovate new frames of
reference. (Gelder and Thornton, pp 13, 1997). Cohen proved this through he s work with young

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Golden Parachutes
Golden parachutes get a lot of press, and they always sound like elite packages for high level
executives. Very few people get them, and very few people know how they work.
Companies usually reserve them for executives at the top of the organization chart, and these
contracts establish an agreed upon compensation package that the employee would immediately
receive upon termination. The benefits package usually includes a list of specific terms that explain
what the terminated employee will receive.
How a Golden Parachute Works

Sparta And Athens Geography Essay
During the development of ancient civilizations, such as Sparta and Athens, geography was an
important factor which influenced how the civilizations were developed, what the civilization s
resources were, and the affects geography has on the differences between each area. Geography is
extremely important to all areas in different ways. For example, geography can affect an area
drastically, whether a country has sea, mountains, or rich farming land, each area is different. For
example, Athens and Sparta were two areas that were drastically different. The two differed greatly
due to isolation because of the tall mountains that were difficult to communicate over. Because it

becoming a farmer due to the differences in there soil. All areas around the world had specific
characteristics that influenced their civilizations, for example the Peninsula of Greece. Greece had
two distinguishing characteristics that influenced how the area began: easy access to water and
a very mountainous region. Being very close to the water, Greece was able to trade with their
neighbors. Also because Greece was so close to water, the land contained many islands, harbors,
and rivers. Since the people of Greece had easy access to water, it was more likely for them to
become traders and explorers then in other places that were not located near a sea. Also because
eighty percent of Greece was mountainous, it was strongly affected by the mountains. For
example, the development of the Polis, also known as a city state, was due to the mountains. Also,
the very tall mountains made it strenuous to travel and hard to communicate. Because of this, each

Analysis Of My Son The Man By Sharon Olds
Accepting Independence
Poetry is like a song without music, it has the ability to awaken your emotions and the ability to
tell stories that can paint beautiful, relatable, imagery in the viewer s mind. Upon reading the
poem, My Son the Man by Sharon Olds, she presents a unique view on her bittersweet
experience of watching her son gravitate towards manhood, Suddenly his shoulders get a lot
wider (line1), while realizing he is astute enough to escape his mother s strong hold, to learn the
way out (line 16). As a mother myself, I began to recognize how I can relate to the speaker s
challenges of understanding a child s need to test limits and break free from dependency. I realized
through the speaker s obvious allusions to Houdini expressing the need to break free, the contrast
used to convey the indirect references to Houdini, and the similes used to express emotion toward
reflecting back on a time of innocence, accepting the need of a maturing child s independence
proves the strength of a mother s love.
My Son the Man begins by comparing her maturing son with the allusion to Houdini, Suddenly
his shoulders get a lot wider, /the way Houdini would expand his body/while people were putting
him in chairs (1 3), similar to Houdini preparing for his next challenge involving an almost
impossible trick. Therefore, lines 1 3 is used to express the shock of a child s rapid growth while

The Causes and Consequences of Low Birth Weight
Low Birth rate is defined by the World health Organization as a baby weighing under 2,499
grams or less regardless of gestational age. (WHO) This is a Prominent issue in our world today
because on average 30 million low birth weight babies are born every year. There are many factors
that can causes low birth weight such as premature birth, substances that affect the mother s health,
father s support, stress, the mothers age and race, and insufficient prenatal care. Low birth weight is
important to prevent and treat because it can lead multiple life threatening consequences, some of
which can remain with the child for life.
Pre mature birth is the number one cause of low birth weight in the United States. A baby is
considered pre mature if they are delivered before the thirty seventh week of pregnancy. This occurs
when the mother goes into labor to early. This can become very dangerous for the baby because
it had less time to develop in the womb leading to developmental issues. Symptoms of premature
birth include a large head in comparison to the body size, respiratory distress, trouble
maintaining body heat, eye damage. There are three types of pre term are Extremely preterm a
child born less than 28 weeks, very preterm born between 28 to 32 weeks, and moderate to late

Boccaccio s Use Of Allegory And Satire In The Decameron
The Decameron is a book whose conclusions are shrouded in complexity. As a result, the stories
and overall structure of the book provide scholars plentiful amounts of literary material to analyze.
The book s broad moral structure based mainly on natural will allows Boccaccio to approach
multiple topics, including restraint, desire, sex, misogyny, deceit, social structure, religion, and
death, without becoming constrained by any one topic. Additionally, the individual stories in The
Decameron offer multiple meanings to further expand the interpretive potential of the book. The
tenth story of day ten (10.10), told by Dioneo, exemplifies Boccaccio s usage of allegory and satire
to provide a multilayered critique of social norms in medieval society.... Show more content on

Williams focuses on Dioneo s last story because she thinks it represents a capitulation to
medieval misogyny and interests. Even with many good ideas and connections, in my opinion,
she misconstrues the ultimate significance of the Griselda story by neglecting Dioneo s
reflection at the end of the tale. Williams focuses on how this story is meant to return the brigata
to the medieval expectations of which they are about to face again. According to Williams, the
final story shows how Dioneo relinquishes all claim to being considered an advocate for social
change and instead simply returns to acting as the primary voice of the author, Giovanni
Boccaccio. Central to this claim is Williams belief that the story returns the brigata to the existing
gender roles of medieval society. However, after reading Petrarch s thorough reworking of the
Griselda story to fit a more moralistic stance, Boccaccio s extreme Griselda story is a satirical
criticism of existing gender roles in The Decameron. Ending with his reflection, Dioneo states that
Gualtieri should have married a woman that would have found another man to warm her wool.
Showing the power of the final reflection, Petrarch completely omits it from his Griselda story,
similarly to how he does not include the introductory statements by

The Gospel Of Mark Illustrates The Character And Face Of...
Describe how the Gospel of Mark illustrates the character and face of Jesus for the Early Christians.
The Bible consists of four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Gospel of Mark is
considered to be the first gospel written, although some may disagree with that. Written between 50
AD and 67 AD and being originally drafted in Greek. It was addressed to the Gentile Christians and
reached out to members of the community being persecuted, even to death for their beliefs and
emphasised the humanity of Jesus. There is no known author of the Gospel of Mark, which is why
many people believe it is written on opinion. There is a belief that the author of this Gospel may
be John Mark. The gospel illustrates Jesus as a humanist and tells us how the Christian population
believed Jesus was the Messiah. Mark is able to capture Jesus as not only a healer, but also a
teacher throughout the gospel. We believe the Gospel is written to portray Jesus as the suffering
servant and to help emphasise Jesus as a humanist.
In Mark s gospel, God speaks to us and tells us this is my son . Many people believed that the
messiah that was sent was the son of god. By God saying this to us, he presents Jesus as the
Messiah. Yet, many people still didn t believe he was who he was said to be. Through Mark s
gospel we are able to see how Jesus was sent to help the christian religion and people of Christianity
as not only the Messiah but the suffering servant.
The gospel of Mark was written for the Christians who were under Emperor Nero s rule. This
particular gospel was written between 50 AD 60 AD. These Christians were persecuted and
blamed for crimes they didn t commit. The severity of the Romans placed persecution on to the
Christians. Christians living in their early life under Emperor Nero s rule struggled extremely.
After Rome suffered a terrible fire that burned for six days and seven nights in 64 AD, the
Romans accused the emperor of the devastation. In order to cover up these remarks Nero blamed
the fire on the Christians, consequently, the entire Christian population became involved and
blamed. Christian life was living hell due to Emperor Nero. A Roman mosaic shows Christian
prisoners being put to death as part of a

Edna Pontellier as a Feminist in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening
Since the beginning of time social constrictions have always retained a firm grasp on the ideas
and actions of humanity. While it remains a formidable foe, still some choose to fight back against
the norm. This never ending war is responsible for major advancements in the social order, but not
every story is so successful. In Kate Chopins The Awakening , Edna Pontellier finds herself
fighting this very battle that, although begins with a positive outlook, ultimately ends in her
demise. Throughout The Awakening , Edna is immersed in a constant clash with society over
the significance of the difference between her life and her self. To Edna, the question of whether
or not she would die for her children is somewhat simple. Edna attempts to explain this concept
to her good friend, Adele Ratignolle, but to no avail, I would give up the unessential; I would
give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn t give myself (Chopin 62).
Not only does Edna consider her life unessential, she categorizes it as equal with material objects
such as money. The idea of self, on the other hand, lies on a completely different level in Edna s
mind. The most important goal to Edna in her life is the journey to discover her true character. The
idea that her inner self is more essential than life or even her children causes Edna to stray farther
from the social constraints of the typical domestic woman. Kathleen M. Streater weighs in on Edna

NW Singers And Chamber Choir Essay
NW Singers and Chamber Choir Concert Report For this assignment, I decided to attend the NW

because I ve always found organized vocal music to be very beautiful. Listening to music that uses
only the human voice is striking and has a certain personal feel to it. I also feel that I can relate
more to choir music, as I am in the choir at my church. This concert was directed by Ms. Susanne

My favorite selection from the program was the one preformed last that night I Sing Because I m
Happy. I chose this as my favorite because of its upbeat happy feel. Its cheerful tune almost lead
people in the audience to start dancing.
The two musical elements from this selection that stood out to me the most were its dynamics and
tempo. The choir and piano would often employ softer and louder dynamics throughout the
performance. There were times when they would repeat the phrase I m so happy yes, softer, then
slowly increase into a much louder and more powerful repeat, giving it a sense of a buildup of joy.

The Prime Minister David Cameron
The British voters have decisively spoken on the June 23 referendum that they want their country
out of the European Union. The 52 percent of them supported Brexit, or Britain s exit, while the
rest favored staying in the regional group. The decision has thrown the United Kingdom, Europe
and the world into a political and economic vortex of uncertainty, which is likely to be worse
before it gets better.
In the United Kingdom, the Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, who had led the
campaign to stay in the EU, announced that he would stand down in the wake of the referendum
result. Jeremy Corbyn, the chief of the main opposition Labor Party, is facing a revolt against
him for not being out there campaigning whole hearted to convince labor voters to vote to stay
in, not leave, the EU. He has sacked one shadow cabinet leader and one cabinet leader has already
resigned. More upheaval is expected to emerge in the next few days.
Brexit has unsettled British sub national politics as well. Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister and
leader of the Scottish Nationalist Party, has announced that the second Scottish referendum for
independence is on the table and she would seek Scotland to remain in the EU even after Britain
leaves. Scottish voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of not leaving the EU. In the wake of wide
support in Northern Ireland to stay in Europe, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has
demanded a referendum for his province s unification with Ireland.

Three Religions and Three Holy Cities
Southwest Asia is home to a variety of cultures as well as religions. It has an significant past with
three major religions: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. It is quite remarkable that Southwest Asia
has been a holy place for all three, and although it causes turmoil it is important to understand the
three religions and their customs. Such information may help us not to judge so quickly or
perhaps to grow in our knowledge about the world. Hopefully this will help everyone to have a
wider view of the world than just the town they reside in or even the country they live in.
Islam Islam is the religion founded from the teachings of the prophet Muhammad. It is often
depicted as a violent and irrational religion by the United States. This is not entirely true and
although some of its customs may seem hostile there is always a reason for them. We must learn
to respect the opinions of everyone and make correct choices for ourselves accordingly. Islam is
represented by a crescent moon and a star. The moon is depicted as waxing or waning. Islam has
Three Major Holy cities: Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem. The symbolic essence of the religious
holidays of Islam are quite large and are celebrated slightly different according to your
denomination. For example, if you are a Sunni Muslim then you would not participate in the act of
beating yourself and cutting yourself as a Shi ite Muslim would practice on the holy day of Ashura.
Other popular Islamic holidays include Maulid, the

Trope In Slaughterhouse Five
Similar to Hosseini, Vonnegut in his novel Slaughterhouse Five begets the Tralfamadorians who act
as the Hermit Guru. The Hermit Guru character trope could be described as a character who lives
away from society and contains powers/wisdom to bring enlightenment. As stated before the
Tralfamadorians fit this description. For example, Vonnegut states, Earth can t be detected from
Tralfamadore, as far as that goes. They re both very small. They re very far apart (Vonnegut 30). As
brought about by Vonnegut, the Tralfamadorians live away from society, so far that they do not
even live on planet Earth, just as the Hermit Guru character trope. In addition, for the enlightenment
trait, Vonnegut grants Tralfamadorians the ability to, see in four... Show more content on

Vonnegut explains how Billy is weak by comparing him to an insect. A Tralfamadorian explains
to Billy that, we are... trapped in the amber of this moment after asking Billy if [he] ever seen
bugs trapped in amber (Vonnegut 77). The Tralfamadorians are telling Billy that he is as
helpless as a bug encased in amber. Billy s outlandish admiration for his captors further proves
Billy s weak mindedness. The Tralfamadorians take advantage of Billy as he is so willing to
accept their ideas. Because of this, Billy embraces a sadistic ideology where nothing actually
matters. For example, Vonnegut grants Billy warrant to state, Now, when I myself hear that
somebody is dead, I simply shrug and say what the Tralfamadorians say about dead people,
which is So it goes (Vonnegut 27). Throughout the story the reader reads Billy say So it goes
many times and it just means that Billy no longer cares for life or the ones that he loves because
he truly believes the person is just fine in plenty of other moments (Vonnegut 27). The
Tralfamadorians taught him to not care. Vonnegut s message is to not just be an acolyte because
what the higher power could be teaching you could be very harmful to you and to others. Vonnegut
uses the powerful Tralfamadorians to contrast the weak Billy and the relationship acts as an
example of the negative effects of following

The Worlds Of The Last Man Essay
In the worlds of The Last Man by Marry Shelly and A Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Atwood, the
lives of the survivors of the apocalypse are thrown into chaos. In The Last Man, the people of
England are driven out of their native home by the plague and forced into the desolate wasteland
that is Europe. In A Handmaid s Tale, Gilead society has torn Offred away from her past life and
severed all her connections to it. In these troubled times, characters turn to religion either by
force or their own free will. In apocalyptic scenarios in literature, the fragmentation of memories
make the victims of the event susceptible to the controlling influence of religion. Over the course
of the novel, Offred continuously reminds the reader of stories of what she was taught by the
Aunts at the Red Center. Offred recalls her old life I think about laundromats. What I wore to
them: shorts, jeans, jogging pants. What I put into them: my own clothes, my own soap, my
own money, money I had earned myself. I think about having such control. Now we walk along
the same street, in red pairs, and no man shouts obscenities at us, speaks to us, touches us. No
one whistles. There is more than one kind of freedom, said Aunt Lydia. Freedom to and freedom
from. In the days of anarchy, it was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from. Don t
underrate it (Atwood 24). Here, Offred remembers the objects of her previous life. However, these
reminders of the past are not presented in a positive light.

Voter Suppression And Its Effects On African Americans
Wonder who s been a victim of voter suppression? Voter suppression has been a problem since
the act of voting came into play. Politicians have schemed since the very beginning to get their
way. With the citizens being the voters it s our responsibility to spot crooked politicians.
Sometimes what we see and what we hear are not the truth. With the voter literacy test and laws
that dis proportionally affect African Americans it s only human nature to be discouraged. What
is going on in society isn t right to us citizens who do up ide by the law. Even with it being un
lawful, Voter suppression is still practiced because some politicians are crooked and the voter
literacy test and laws that disproportionately affect African Americans are a prime example. The
voter literacy occurred when blacks in the south were going through hard times. The literacy test
supposedly applicable to both white and black prospective voters who couldn t prove a certain
level of education, but in actuality disproportionately administered to black voters was a classic
example of one of these barriers ( Onion). The test was designed so the person grading the test
could pick who failed or passed. There shouldn t have been administrated a test anyway, as long
as they were 18 and an American citizen. Politician s scheme up a way to where they can get the
voters they want to the pole. The USA says that its justice for all and allows everyone freedom.
The voter literacy test isn t justice at all and it

General Powell South Korea
At the time, a brigadier general, Harry Powell worked for the Department of the Army. He and
Major Adriana Perkins, General Powell s assistant and right hand, were attending a Departmental
meeting at the Pentagon. Major Perkins was going over numbers and statistics which General
Powell would later address during his presentation to the heads of the Department, to appropriate
more funds for Army troops in South Korea and their South Korean allies. The Army felt that with
an ever increasing threat from the North Koreans and an emerging China, South Korea had to be
fortified. Initially, General Powell and Major Perkins had planned to go to the Pentagon s cafeteria
and discuss the presentation and important items over breakfast and coffee,... Show more content on

The blast had thrown both off their feet. There was mayhem everywhere. General Powell was
temporarily deaf and blinded. His mind slowly began to place the pieces of sanity into place,
General Powell found himself partly under some rubble. He did not understand what was
happening and he could not distinguish between dream or reality. Of all his senses, it seemed
that his olfactory sense had not been affected because he was stricken by the strong odor of
kerosene or fuel of some kind. He wondered if perhaps a truck hauling kerosene or gasoline had
accidentally exploded outside, after all there had been recent construction on that part of the
Pentagon. His vision slowly returned, yet he was unable to hear anything. He started to look
around only to be surprised by fires, smoke and mangled bodies and that overwhelming smell of
kerosene. He called out for Major Perkins, but could not hear himself scream. Finally, after what
seemed like an eternity, he struggled to get to his feet only to see the limp body of Major
Adriana Perkins hunched over some rubble no more than 30 feet away. As he tried to get up and
walk toward her, he got a sharp pain to his lower back which made it difficult and painful for
General Powell to move his legs. He let out a scream in pain and fell to the ground and slowly
crawled to Major Perkins s side. The moment took General Powell back in time to the

Lessons from Operation Eagle Claw
The execution of military operations requires the application of certain fundamental principles, and
tenets that have been the keystone of strategy development and conflict planning, since the
appearance of organized forces. In addition to these tenets and principles, the military relies on the
experience of front line leaders, and lessons learned to ensure operations evolve to focus on current
and emerging threats. Currently, the United States military is waging wars on two fronts, Iraq and
Afghanistan. To be successful, these operations require the coordinated efforts of all branches of
service, Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Unfortunately, joint and special operations haven t
always been executed as smoothly as the current... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Getting the helicopters staged at Desert One proved more difficult than initially imagined. Even
before the initial wave of the helicopters reached Desert One, the mission experienced a loss due
to pilot unfamiliarity with the warning signals of the Navy helicopter. This incident reduced the
available helicopters for the mission, from eight to seven. The weather dealt the mission its
second blow. As the helicopters continued toward Desert One, they encountered severe
sandstorms. The sandstorms proved difficult for the pilots. One pilot became disoriented and
turned back, once again reducing the number of available helicopters, which now stood at six.
Once the remaining six helicopters arrived at Desert One, the operation was ready to proceed.
As aircraft and Delta Force operators were positioned in the final stages for execution, one of the
final six helicopters experienced a hydraulic problem that caused the safety of the craft to be
called into question. Ultimately, this malfunction issued the final blow to the troubled mission.
After the order to abort was confirmed and evacuation initiated, as if to add insult to injury, the
already failed mission received one final fatal blow. While repositioning for departure, one of the
five remaining helicopters passed too closely to a parked C 130 cargo plane. The rotors of the
helicopter clipped the C 130 and sparked an explosion that ultimately killed eight military members.

of career after career change, if followed in wrong direction. Your expertise level is lost and you

While working you may find a friend ,college or a mentor who will often advice you for changing
a certain career. Even your family may follow such a person. But be careful, changing career mere
because of external advice should be strictly avoided. This may help you temporarily but can make
you unhappy eventually.
Making career change solely because of money benefits Money benefit can be a reason for
career change. But changing career only for money benefits has to be avoided. Since as you earn
more money your expenditure may grow. You may be required to work in pressure and this may
develop stress. Gradually this may make you spend for stress relieving treatments and even make
you physically ill .
Making career change without planning
Planning is necessary for career change. You needto spend time for self assessment ,training, etc
before career change. If you do not plan for these activities you cannot succeed in your career
change . Because as you move in the new career you may start finding that you lack in the traits

Stereotypes In The Poisonwood Bible
False judgment leads to crazy notions. It creates false ideas and opinions. Judgment stretches or
condemns the truth to be less that it is. In Barbara Kingsolver s novel, The Poisonwood Bible,
many characters judge others based upon preconceived stereotypes. Judgment is always
influenced by stereotypes and causes false feelings . First, Judgment is always influenced by
stereotypes and causes false feelings can be seen in how women are treated in, The Poisonwood
Biblebecause of the Kilanga and Nathan Prices treatment of women. In the Congo, women are
treated as a housekeeper and child bearer. They are not treated equally even as teachers. When
Leah Price is teaching the young Kilanga boys math at school, she notices they do not respect...

It is unusual to disrespect the educators. She asks the male teacher, Anatole, why they do not like
her. Anatole replies, Understand, first, you are a girl. These boys are not accustomed to
obeying their own grandmothers. If long division is really so important to a young man s
success in the world, how could a pretty girl know about it? This is what they are thinking (74).
Women are not respected in the Congo, even as a teacher! Judgment from the Kilanga boys of
Leah are influenced by stereotypes of her being a women, and therefore they will not respect
her. A second instance were women were judged to be less then men, was Nathan Price s views on
sending his daughters to college. Kingsolver writes, Sending a girl to college is like pouring water
in your shoes, he still loves to say, as often as possible. It s hard to say which is worse, seeing it run
out and waste the water, or seeing it hold in and wreck the shoes (15). He will not send his
daughters to college because he believes women being educated in college is a waste. He does not
believe all women should be educated past college. This will harm his

1. Why did you select the solvents that you tested? Did your data support your hypothesis or
disprove your hypothesis?
We selected water because it is a constant and it is a common solvent, as well as we selected
acetone and ethanol, since all three of these solvents are very different from each other, such as
their structure and polarity levels. The data that we collected supports our hypothesis.
2. What explanations can you provide for your separation of the three molecules? How was the
choice of the solvent connected to the separation process?

The Pros And Cons Of The Whaling Ban
Despite the whaling ban in 1986 by the International Whaling Commission, some countries are
refusing to stop doing this practice especially Japan. After the 1986 ban, Japan launched their
supposed scientific whaling program which is widely known as their cover for their commercial
whaling practice. Supporters of the whalingban claim that reversing the ban will cause whale
populations to become endangered or even extinct. Also, supporters of the IWC whaling ban say
that the IWC should maintain the ban and establish stricter rules regarding the ban. Proponents also
claim that the whale populations have yet to return to its former population before the excessive
hunting happened. Anti whaling groups such as Greenpeace point to species such as the West
Pacific gray whale, of which, according to some estimates, there are only about 100 left. According
to Palumbi and Roman s whale population study, the North Atlantic humpback whalepopulation
before commercial whaling was more than 20 times what it is now.( ) Even with IWC whaling ban
Japan, Iceland, and Norway continue to hunt illegally.
Additionally, supporters of ban suggest that it is completely idiotic to risk lifting the ban for
countries who claim that whaling is a part of their culture. And that banning whaling, a practice that
whale hunters were doing for centuries is cultural imperialism and is totally unacceptable. In
response to the accusations of cultural imperialism, advocates of the whaling ban countered the

  • 2. The Food Areas Of The United States Essay As the population increases and urbanization continues to develop and become more popular, an important, life sustaining product is left behind. Most relevant in western civilization, the scarcity of locally grown and produced food is a problem that exists, whether people realize it or not. Per the Food Access Research Atlas, provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, there are 8,959 food deserts in the united states as of 2010 В№. An Urban Food desert is any location deprived of supermarkets and other access to fresh fruits and vegetables, which usually plagues places of lower socioeconomic status. The low demand for food is attributed to lack of affordability and education, and perceptibly retailers ought not bring their business to places with very little demand for the product. If these deserts are ever to be omitted from the world, it is not enough to hope for the eventual emergence of supermarkets or farms, communities must work together to improve their range of reachable sustenance. It is every person s duty, as a member of humanity, to aid in fixing the problem and ultimately improving the world, which gives way to defining the common good approach to ethical reasoning. Using the common good approach, a simple, yet collectively beneficial solution is the emergence of local gardens /greenhouses, which would largely combat the detrimental dining options of an urban food desert. If the movement to a more horticultural lifestyle is ever to work, first, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Essay about The history of Detroit Diesel Have you ever wondered how Detroit Diesel has become what it is today. Detroit Diesel Corporation manufactures diesel and alternative fuel engines for use in trucks, buses, commercial and pleasure marine craft, military and so on. This is how Detroit Diesel has progressed over the years with engines and help of other distributors and dealers. The history of Detroit Diesel started in 1938 just as WWII was heating up. In the same year General Motors formed the GM Diesel Division which is the ancestor of Detroit Diesel. This was an epic time when tradition of strength, quality, and dependability was born.( Detroit Diesel ) After the war had ended, GM Diesel recognized the growing opportunity in the on highway truck market. In 1957, GM ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The incentive to develop such engines came from the idea to replace steam in the locomotive industry. Alfred P. Sloan, president of GM during the 1920s 1930s said that Charles F. Kettering can be credited with the foresight and drive behind the practical diesel power. Kettering supervised experiments at GM as early as 1921 to develop a smaller, more efficient diesel. The small, practical GM diesel engine might have never been developed is Kettering hadn t been a yachtsman. Kettering purchased a diesel engine for his yacht and was so impressed, he convinced Sloan to buy the Cleveland, Ohio company named Winton that made the engine. After this, GM began to develop a diesel powered locomotive engine during the 1920s and 1930s. (Detroit Diesel Corporation) Locomotive companies where impressed with the power and efficiency of the engines compared to the steam locomotives they had been operating for years. No other major manufacturer built a diesel locomotive engine until after WWII. The importance of the railroad began to decline after WWII , but Detroit Diesel had already moved into the trucking industry. Detroit Diesels main competitor in the post years, Cummings Engine Co. , began to fight seriously for market share in the 1960s. However, the trucking industry was booming and there ... • 6. Analysis Of The Picture Of Dorian Gray Haley Morrow Mrs. Crook 12 AP English 15 Oct. 2015 Irony in The Picture of Dorian Gray More often than not, it is hard to face the consciousness of the inevitable. Everyone feels the distress of realizing that time is fleeting and they will soon grow old and wrinkly, no longer their youthful self. The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, illustrates this human condition specifically through the main character Dorian Gray. Mr. Gray captures the artistic imagination of artist Basil Howard, who constantly paints portraits of Dorian. Basil usually depicts Dorian as an ancient Greek hero or a mythological creature, but when he completes his first portrait of Dorian for who he truly is he is disappointed because he feels as though this painting reveals too much about his subject. Dorian on the other hand goes to the extreme when he sees this portrait. Worrisome, Dorian believes that one day the portrait will remind him of his former beautiful and young self. Out of anguish, he curses the portrait, ultimately selling his soul to spare himself of the burdens of age and infamy, allowing him to stay forever young. In his novella, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde uses irony to exemplify an anomaly between the aging process of Dorian Gray in contrast with that of the portrait of himself, particularly in a society that prizes beauty and youth. Dorian s first big act of cruelty begins when he inconsiderately calls of his engagement with Sibyl Vane, a beautiful actress. Sibyl ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Pros And Cons Of Solar Energy Even though only a small amount of the sun s heat ever reaches Earth, it is enough to power the whole world. Solar energy is always being provided to us by the Sun. Solar energy can be converted into electricity and heat. It helps provide the warmth necessary for people, plants, and animals to survive. With the help of today s technology, scientists have found a way to use the sunto help us in our everyday lives. The idea of solar energyhas, resulted in the use of solar power. Thus, it could lead to a more modernized and efficient society. Solar energy is a renewable resource and is converted to electrical energy in two ways: by using photovoltaic materials or the thermal process. The photovoltaic method, generates electric power by using the solar energy to convert energy from the sun into a flow of electrons. (Sethia, et al., 2017). The thermal method is a process that uses the energy from the sun to heat a working fluid in an electric generating cycle. Solar energy is one of the most important sources of energy we could have because it is a non polluting energy. This, in turn, helps in lessening the greenhouse effect. The most popular way to use solar energy is through the use of solar panels. To generate the high temperatures necessary to make steam to generate electricity, the sunlight must be concentrated. Solar thermal technology often uses reflectors in the form of parabolic concentrators or flat mirrors to focus the sun s rays onto a water filled pipe. While at work, I was also able to interview a customer who used to be in the solar panel business. His name is Henry Caldwell, and he used to work for Turnbull Contracting, LLC, in Bowling Green, Missouri. During the interview, I was able to learn about the different systems they offer, and some types of solar panels available. The two systems available from Turnbull Contracting are the string inverter and the micro inverter. First, the string inverter is the most basic out of the two. The string system would be ideal for homes and businesses that have direct sunlight and openings. The panels in this system are all chained together so that when one panels gets shade, it also impact the other panels. However, the micro inverter is more up to date ... • 9. The Inferno, By Dante Throughout the Inferno, Dante has often presented characters in a way that reflects his own personality: there is the amorous and suicidal Dido for whom he shows sympathy and gives a lesser punishment, while there is the suicidal Pier delle Vigne to whom he gives a much harsher punishment. This difference in placement should reflect a strict moral code that agrees with a pre established divine order, and yet Dante demonstrates such obvious favoritism. Why? Dido loved Aeneas too much, as Dante loved Beatrice. Therefore, Dante can easily sympathize. Similarly, when Dante faces Francesca da Rimini and her lover Paolo, he experiences an immense amount of understanding and compassion yet they are there in Hell. While these characters may come... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Commedia, Dante depicts himself as a prophet (for which God s word is the Commedia itself) who undergoes a learning experience that transforms him into a perfect prophet who is able to convey God s word without doubts or reservations. This transformation occurs gradually as Dante learns from various characters he meets throughout the journey, but probably the greatest contributor to this transformation is Ulysses. In Canto XXVI, Dante focuses on major themes regarding his spiritual condition in order to contrast Ulysses spiritual condition, some of which include the cause for damnation or salvation, a poetic and/or prophetic authority, and flight. The primary source of similarities between their spiritual states can be found in Dante s Convivio, which employs a much more philosophic and empirical perspective that ultimately led Dante into the selva scura as seen in the beginning of the Commedia. The Commedia itself is meant to turn those similarities into differences and thereby convince the reader of his transformation from Convivio to the Commedia. In Canto XXVI, as Dante the pilgrim converses with Ulysses through Virgil while assuming that Virgil understands that which Dante wishes to ask it is important to note Dante s enthusiasm for coming to understand the history and sins of each character he meets: S ei posson dentro da quelle faville parlar, diss io, maestro, assai ten priego e ripriego, che ... • 10. A Comparison Of Catch 22 And Captain Corelli s Mandolin In Catch 22 and Captain Corelli s Mandolin, both authors suggest the unsettling idea that life holds no universal conclusion because in actuality life is the continual clash of absolutes and therefore refuses the reader the comfort of closure . Both novels handle the difficult subject of war using similar postmodernist techniques to display it, such as fragmented narratives. However their intentions and ideas of war are extremely different creating interesting comparisons. De Bernier s novel, Captain Corelli s Mandolin, published in 1994, but set during the second world war, is composed with multiple narratives, far from the omniscient narrator often found in 19th century literature. Instead De Bernier s uses an amalgamation of formats ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When considering war we believe there is a good and a bad side, in the Second World War most would conceive the Nazis to unequivocally be the enemy and therefore immoral. Perhaps this is why the chapter The Good Nazi , in Captain Corelli s Mandolin, immediately unsettles the reader as there is no irony in this statement. De Berneires presents Gunter Weber full of innocence and as someone who has simply absorbed the propaganda of the Nazis. We see his innocence portrayed in The Good Nazi ; Weber was a twenty two year old man and had never seen a woman naked before...Weber was a still a virgin . The simplicity of De Bernier s language here reflects the simplicity of Weber as a character. Weber causes us to question the limitations of our own heroism or our capacity to see beyond propaganda. It could be argued that rather than the good Nazi he represents the ordinary Nazi, he accepts what the state has told him as that is the easiest path. By presenting us with someone who is ordinary it unsettles the reader as it draws a bond between the reader and the character. Rather than blaming and seeing him as monstrous and all the other preconceptions society holds against Nazis, we instead see qualities of ordinary humanity and ourselves in him. Dr. Iannis statement, there would be no tyranny, Captain, and no wars, if minions did not ignore their conscience . Is conceivably there to further ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Naturalism In To Build A Fire The novel To build a fire written by Jack London is based on the naturalism, which is a type of literature that is focused on Darwinian s theory, survival of the fittest . It can be interpreted as your will exists, but this will is enslaved by beyond your control. Naturalistic writing came out about in 19th century, and it was profound ideology stemming from realism. Generally, the naturalism based stories themes are man against natureor awakening that nature is indifferent to men. • 12. Victim Blaming Sociology The phenomenon of victim blaming is a multifaceted topic with far reaching consequences. The tendency to blame innocent victims stems from a need to cope with threats to our concept of reality. People generally prefer to consider the world to be just a concept that indicates that people get what they deserve. This just world view is very integral to the worldview of most people, so when it is threatened, individuals employ defensive strategies to reestablish a sense of justice in the world (Hafer, 2000). Blaming the victimin some capacity for misfortunes that befall them is a convenient way to reestablish a just world view. Such misattribution of blame institutes the possibility that victims of crimes or disease will be mistreated and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is more likely that a person will engage in victim blaming when the victim in question is an in group member in some capacity. When a person whom is perceived as belonging to one s in group is victimized, one s perception of the just world is more likely to be threatened (Correia Vala, 2003). This is because observers wish to believe themselves as invincible to the same types of misfortune as those who are victimized, and the more similarities between the observer and the victim, the more the observer may question this perception of invincibility (Goldenberg Forgas, 2012). Mood Induction When an individual engages in victim blaming practices, they are attempting to alleviate psychological discomfort. It is reasonable to suggest, then, that pre existing states of mood may influence the likelihood of blaming the victim. Mood as resource theory indicates that a positive mood acts as a resource, which individuals may draw upon when presented with situations that threaten their world view (Raghunathan Trope, 2002). Toni Morrison utilizes biblical references and symbolization to depict the imprisonment of African American people after slavery in her novel, Song of Solomon. Accordingly, each character deals with their oppression in a way that corresponds with their biblical counterparts, and in some cases, to prevent themselves from the oppression in which their biblical counterparts fall victim to. Corinthians is first depicted to the reader as a child, playing with rose petals with her sister, Lena, right as a doctor, Mr. Smith, attempts to fly and jumps off of the roof of Mercy Hospital. The rose petals, therefore, begin to symbolize the pursuit of love for Corinthians and its impossibility. Corinthians, however, also takes on the symbolism of Paul s letter to the people of Corinth in the Bible as like them, she would [violate her own sense of morality] to escape the velvet. Throughout this essay the traditional definitions of subcultures, that mainly concentrate on class and style as their main features, will be looked at and explained. It will then be demonstrated how these ways of thinking are no longer relevant to the 21st century therefore the term subcultureneeds to be rethought for it to be an applicable category in the 21st century. The term youth subcultures was first made and studied at the University Of Chicago in America (Blackman, 2003) . The theorists were in disagreement with the picture the mass media had been painting about youth. Early American theorist of the Chicago school believed class was a leading factor as to why there was social disorganisation. Albert K. Cohen went on further to explain how class created divisions in society. As a result, the stories and overall structure of the book provide scholars plentiful amounts of literary material to analyze. The book s broad moral structure based mainly on natural will allows Boccaccio to approach multiple topics, including restraint, desire, sex, misogyny, deceit, social structure, religion, and death, without becoming constrained by any one topic. Additionally, the individual stories in The Decameron offer multiple meanings to further expand the interpretive potential of the book. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Williams focuses on Dioneo s last story because she thinks it represents a capitulation to medieval misogyny and interests. Even with many good ideas and connections, in my opinion, she misconstrues the ultimate significance of the Griselda story by neglecting Dioneo s reflection at the end of the tale. Williams focuses on how this story is meant to return the brigata to the medieval expectations of which they are about to face again. According to Williams, the final story shows how Dioneo relinquishes all claim to being considered an advocate for social change and instead simply returns to acting as the primary voice of the author, Giovanni Boccaccio. Central to this claim is Williams belief that the story returns the brigata to the existing gender roles of medieval society. However, after reading Petrarch s thorough reworking of the Griselda story to fit a more moralistic stance, Boccaccio s extreme Griselda story is a satirical criticism of existing gender roles in The Decameron. • 34. The Gospel Of Mark Illustrates The Character And Face Of... Describe how the Gospel of Mark illustrates the character and face of Jesus for the Early Christians. The Bible consists of four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Gospel of Mark is considered to be the first gospel written, although some may disagree with that. Written between 50 AD and 67 AD and being originally drafted in Greek. It was addressed to the Gentile Christians and reached out to members of the community being persecuted, even to death for their beliefs and emphasised the humanity of Jesus. There is no known author of the Gospel of Mark, which is why many people believe it is written on opinion. There is a belief that the author of this Gospel may be John Mark. The gospel illustrates Jesus as a humanist and tells us how the Christian population believed Jesus was the Messiah. Mark is able to capture Jesus as not only a healer, but also a teacher throughout the gospel. We believe the Gospel is written to portray Jesus as the suffering servant and to help emphasise Jesus as a humanist. In Mark s gospel, God speaks to us and tells us this is my son . Many people believed that the messiah that was sent was the son of god. By God saying this to us, he presents Jesus as the Messiah. Yet, many people still didn t believe he was who he was said to be. Through Mark s gospel we are able to see how Jesus was sent to help the christian religion and people of Christianity as not only the Messiah but the suffering servant. The gospel of Mark was written for the Christians who were under Emperor Nero s rule. This particular gospel was written between 50 AD 60 AD. These Christians were persecuted and blamed for crimes they didn t commit. The severity of the Romans placed persecution on to the Christians. Christians living in their early life under Emperor Nero s rule struggled extremely. After Rome suffered a terrible fire that burned for six days and seven nights in 64 AD, the Romans accused the emperor of the devastation. In order to cover up these remarks Nero blamed the fire on the Christians, consequently, the entire Christian population became involved and blamed. Christian life was living hell due to Emperor Nero. A Roman mosaic shows Christian prisoners being put to death as part of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Edna Pontellier as a Feminist in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening Since the beginning of time social constrictions have always retained a firm grasp on the ideas and actions of humanity. While it remains a formidable foe, still some choose to fight back against the norm. This never ending war is responsible for major advancements in the social order, but not every story is so successful. In Kate Chopins The Awakening , Edna Pontellier finds herself fighting this very battle that, although begins with a positive outlook, ultimately ends in her demise. Throughout The Awakening , Edna is immersed in a constant clash with society over the significance of the difference between her life and her self. To Edna, the question of whether or not she would die for her children is somewhat simple. Edna attempts to explain this concept to her good friend, Adele Ratignolle, but to no avail, I would give up the unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn t give myself (Chopin 62). Not only does Edna consider her life unessential, she categorizes it as equal with material objects such as money. The idea of self, on the other hand, lies on a completely different level in Edna s mind. The most important goal to Edna in her life is the journey to discover her true character. The idea that her inner self is more essential than life or even her children causes Edna to stray farther from the social constraints of the typical domestic woman. Kathleen M. Streater weighs in on Edna s situation and placement in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The reason why I chose this option over the others is because I ve always found organized vocal music to be very beautiful. Listening to music that uses only the human voice is striking and has a certain personal feel to it. I also feel that I can relate more to choir music, as I am in the choir at my church. This concert was directed by Ms. Susanne Spencer VanDyke, accompanied by Dr. Saundra Bishop on the piano. My favorite selection from the program was the one preformed last that night I Sing Because I m Happy. I chose this as my favorite because of its upbeat happy feel. Its cheerful tune almost lead people in the audience to start dancing. The two musical elements from this selection that stood out to me the most were its dynamics and tempo. The choir and piano would often employ softer and louder dynamics throughout the performance. There were times when they would repeat the phrase I m so happy yes, softer, then slowly increase into a much louder and more powerful repeat, giving it a sense of a buildup of joy. Next is the tempo. It seems as though the tempo in this piece would sometimes change, moving from a faster to slower rate to, again, most likely to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, Dodd was very successful with remaining undetected at opportune moments, as well as, knowing exactly when to increase the distance from the enemy. What impressed me most was his ability to successfully communicate with allied forces who didn t necessarily speak his language. He used hand and arm signals to pantomime and gesture what it was he was trying to get across to his comrades. This trait would definitely fall under adaptability. Leadership lessons learned from this book: Dodd, as well as the French, possessed some good leadership skills which could easily be learned from. First of all, Dodd was capable of leading the Portuguese rebels when he was English speaking and they knew only Portuguese.
