This study examines 20 cases of pediatric complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) treated at a children's hospital over 4 years. The results showed CRPS predominantly affects girls around age 12 in the lower limbs, often initiated by minor trauma. There were lengthy delays in diagnosis of over 3 months on average, delaying treatment. Treatment consisted of intensive physiotherapy and psychological therapy, with most children also requiring pain medications. The majority of children had complete resolution of symptoms within 15 weeks on average using this regimen, though some required inpatient treatment and some saw relapses. The study concludes pediatric CRPS is under-recognized by clinicians and more research is needed into alternative treatment modalities due to lengthy recovery times and relapse rates with current approaches.
