DEVELOPMENT
INTRODUCTION

• If we examine the root of the word personality ("persona") we

discover it means "mask." So the origin of the term suggests the
early philosopher-psychologists believed the real self was hidden
beneath the mask of personality.

What is Personality
• Personality is a mixture of various physical, cultural and other
values and does not merely mean appearance. Appearance is just
one of the facets of the personality and does not constitute the
entire persona.
Foundation/Pillars of Personality :
Four main pillars of personality.
I. General Disposition. This includes person’s intelligence, aptitude,
smartness, quickness, alertness, ready-wit, presence of mind amongst others.
II. Speech includes communication that would impress the other person. It is
powerful means of communication and is a basic tool to relate to other
individual. Speech includes content.
III.General Behaviour. It is the third important foundation which should be
neither over nor below the acceptable or decent norms. The expression
should be sincere not exuding artificiality. The way a person stands, shakes
hands, sits down and performs small acts like smiling ,nodding, waving,
refusing, acknowledging, all go to build up this behaviour line.
IV. The fourth pillar of personality is contained in looks which is a extension
of personality. Looks do not mean overt good looks or handsome/pretty face
but looks which exude geniality amicable disposition, warmth and
camaraderie.
• All these of course needs to be harmonized with inner personality of good

character and attributes. Pure moral character supported by unblemished acts
that keep away from temptations of life. The authencity of soul will find
reflection on the face which would glow with beauty . This natural truth is
more impressive than any conscious effort to express one’s values.

• Two fold action to advance one’s personality ,first of these consist of positive

actions or DO’s. One has to improve himself learn, acquire, practice and do all
positive things to master the art of cultured existence.

• Second of the acts would refer to negative actions that is don’ts meaning the
actions which should not be indulged in to preserve one’s personality.

• One should try to behave naturally and act truthfully with himself & others

whatever is the experience of the world. The inference should be positive and
the position winning for ex., one should be clever in dealing with the cunning
& scheming but avoid adopting their ways and tarnish or belittle oneself. This
should not stand in the way of building up one’s goodwill. Be your natural
self and enhance your natural response. This will impressively add to your
personality .
• One should avoid giving boost to one’s personality.
• Prevent one’s character or personality to degenerate.
• Avoid excess of any kind ; moderation in character &
behavior is therefore the sum total of personality.

• The sum total emerges from shape & sound emerging from

small and big acts . Consider the picture of a gentleman
whose countenance is shining with inner glow emanating
from education & culture. His behavior is affable &
amiable ,he neither submits nor surrenders ,his talk is easy &
unhurting , but his views are strong, acceptable and not to be
swayed.
Improvement prospects
• Modern civilization provides means and opportunities for

improvement in personality ,while looks are in fact secondary,
good taste in clothes, and other forms of grooming will make
one’s personality stand out in crowd .

• Certain Professions which are personality oriented like Air

Hostess, Public relation Officers, sales & marketing
personnel, TV newsreader/Anchor, DJ’s etc., are required to
train themselves not only in their profession but in public
dealing. All these vocations may differ but one common factor
stands out i.e., to improve their general get up, behavior talks
etc.

• Important Factors. Will and Determination to improve
oneself .One may start from scratch but set himself objectives.
Just as five year plan.

helpful things to your efficiency and mind power.

Helps overcome procrastination by eliminating time wasted
by trying to decide what to work on.

It helps keep you on task while you are working; have a
specific objective makes it harder to rationalize quitting
before you achieved it.

It generates a feeling of progress & success when you set &

complete a concrete goal. This kind of success can easily begin

YOUR PERSONALITY
DISCIPLINE YOURSELF :
• Discipline is not doing extraordinary things but doing

ordinary things extraordinarily well through proper actions.
Action is of two kinds- without direction and absolute
direction. What is discipline? It is a force, which marshals
our inner force and saves us from possible disasters in which
the undisciplined often find themselves. Discipline has
advantages. It enables you to cultivate steadfastness. You do
not permit your mind to sidetrack important matters. It
enables you to go on with your work until it is completed. In
other words, with discipline you save yourself from dithering.
You remain composed. Adversity cannot push you this way or
that. You are not at the mercy of your nerves and do not rush
from one chore to another- all poorly done.
Without discipline you cannot experience enjoying the serenity which stems
from a job well done. Achievement does not come from feverish attempts.
It comes from disciplined action. Begin by doing things of 'trivial‘
significance. Take something that you have been shirking for long, whether
it is a certain area of mathematics, which you don't find interesting, or
payment of a bill or a visit to a friend. By using will power, you overcome.
To strengthen your will power, select a small project rather than a big one.
If you say "this week I am going to write one essay", you are likely to
accomplish this task. But if you say, "today I am going to finish this book“
the chances are that, you will not. When you finish one job do not relax.
Instead allow yourself another reasonable task, which enables you to
proceed at a steady pace. A break in steady and disciplined effort pushes
you away from long range goal. Go on adding one link to another which
forms an unbreakable chain.
When you come into a task, prepare yourself as thoroughly as you can if you have
to write an essay, it is better if you keep your side the reference matter. This
ensures concentration, and you have no excuse for leaving the work incomplete.
Do not be overawed by obstacles. Instead, look upon each step as a definite move
towards the ultimate goal. Then look back and you will be thrilled to see a string
of small success behind you. These inspire you to more efforts. They strengthen
your sense of discipline. You have results to your credit.
Be on guard against your so-called friends. They will tell you that you are
gaining nothing from your efforts. In such circumstances, remind your self of
your tangible success. Bad suggestions have a banal influence. Counter them.
Your effort to cultivate self-discipline go waste if you do not master the art of
dealing with time wasters. They are chronophages. Every successful person has
either cultivated or adopted a way of life to keep time wasters out of his life.
Einstein says " have to work now", and excuses himself from the time-wasting
scene. It is important to have a reasonable, workable plan of work, and a
rational spur to it. Hurry is an evidence of inner stress. There is time and ways
for action and reflection. Don't 'escape‘ from time. Fill every bit of it with
positive action. This is the core and crux of discipline.
WIN OVER WORRIES & FEARS
Though our country got independence more than forty-five years
ago, yet most of our people are still suffering from serious
ailments of poverty and affiliated afflictions, all because of the
corrupt leaders and selfish politicians on the whole. While Net
Subhash Chandra Bose used to say:
"In a society, where there will be no inequality of wealth, each individual
will have equal opportunity for education and advancement; in a society,
where labour and work shall get full respect and there will be no place for
idlers and lazy people; which will be free from foreign influence and
interference, I dream of such a State. This dream is eternal truth for me, for
the dignity of this truth everything can be done, all can be given up, all
kinds of sufferings may be endured; to make this meaningful, even to
sacrifice our life is to attain heaven."
Worries and fears of any kind are the most evil enemies of
self-confidence. These have to be won over not only for the
betterment of the nation, but also for your individual
success. In Sanskrit, there is a quotation:
As is the Universe, so is our body and similar is the case of
the nations. The philosophers and great thinkers of even
the western world ruled about the advancement of their
own countries, as the system completely eroded nobility,
humanity and virtuosity of their masses. But our leaders
consider otherwise!

Be won over not only for the betterment of the nation, but also for your individual
success. In Sanskrit, there is a quotation:

and great thinkers of even the western world ruled about the advancement of their own
countries, as the system completely eroded nobility, humanity and virtuosity of their
masses. But our leaders consider otherwise!
In so far as the country's affairs are concerned, the picture is very dismal, let us therefore
turn to our own personal matters. According to many great thinkers, it is entirely up to
us as to whether we want to be happy or worried; it is wholly of our own choosing.
Abraham Lincoln, one of the great Presidents of the U.S.A., stated in one of his lectures
that people are as much happy as they want to be. And conversely they are certainly as
much worried as they desire. But the question who wants to be in worries, pains and
suffering? Is this not a dilemma? All the same the selection is in your hands!
In this context, Indian hero Kishore kumar, who has since expired, used
always sing songs cheerfully. Someone once asked him - "What was the
secret of his being so cheerful?" Kishore Kumar replied - "there is nothing
secret in my being cheerful all the while. This is an obvious as your nose is
on your face. When I get up in the morning, there are two things before me
and I have to choose from amongst these. I make selection of remaining
happy and cheerful and that is all to it.
There was a couple; the husband was a professor and his wife was just a
housewife. But the habits of both of them were entirely different; the
professor husband always remained cheerful, while his wife was most of
the time miserable, feigning some trouble or worry all the while. When a
newcomer came to their house, the professor introducing his wife used to
say that she is the owner of a factory. And when the newcomer asked
about the production of her factory, the professor would say that troubles,
worries ad pains were produced in his wife's factory! Many of us are the sort
of people who own, such factories and mostly remain sad or sorrowful for
no rhyme or reason!
In Hindi, there is a proverb

• The world is according to your view. So we must change our outlook as bet

as possible in order to enjoy our everyday life. The best remedy of removing
the ailments of worry is to keep yourself so much busy that you may have
time to think and get tired so that you may be able to do only almost
essential, viz., taking food etc., and a few hours to sleep!

• During the Second World War when Hitler had let loose all the

destruction and fury over England, the Prime Minister, Mr.Winston
Churchill, was surrounded from all sides with problems, he had to work
eighteen hours day underground, he was asked by someone as to how he
was able to discharge his immense responsibilities that must have kept him
worried, Churchill's reply was - "I have very little time already; where is
the time for worries?" Hence the simple rule is that we must always keep
our mind busy on good and constructive ideas, ever thinking of today.
• Because life exists today; yesterday is gone already and
tomorrow never comes. Some Sanskrit poet has written:

• What is past is past and that which is to come is not certain.
Therefore, man should do that which pertains to the present.

• Mahakavi Kalidas has described the importance of present

day in glorious terms - In his immortal poem, he states that
we must welcome dawn, because life belongs to our present
day and is the sum-total of all. All realities are hidden in our
present day, as yesterday is gone and tomorrow is only a
dream. In today is hidden all the boons, the significance of
work and development and the secret of success. Enjoy it
while working for the good of all; never allow this to pass
without adding luster to life as whole. Because if it is gone, it
is gone for ever!
• Our late Prime Minister LalBahadur Shastri was quite small

in size; hence once a correspondent asked him that it must be
matter of worry to him. But shastriji's reply was:

• Nanak says - Remain small like the tiny grass; all great ones

have fallen, but the small grass remains happily when a storm
rages on the earth. Even remain polite and you will be loved
and respected. Besides that which cannot be cured, must be
endured happily with cheer. Compromise with what is true
and bow down like the tiny grass, otherwise if you show
erectness like a tree when the wind blows with fury, you are
going to break down.

• It is stated :If there is some remedy for the ills, find it out

immediately. But if you cannot find any remedy, then why
keep on worrying for nothing.
• The best remedy for fears and worries is to pray and keep on

doing your duties most sincerely, honestly and truthfully. You
must have faith in His will and accept by adapting yourself
to the adverse circumstances, if you feel you are surrounded
by some. Never give up but think of a way out and leave off
worrying. Because if you keep on fearing the worst, you are
likely to feel depressed. On the other hand, if you deliberately
shake these off from your mind and be bold to face the worst,
preparing yourself mentally and physically, you ware bound
to feel comfortable! Only rare people are able to understand
the riddle of life.

• In Sanskrit, it is stated Like a wheel, the good and bad days

go on turning, as day follows night, so night is followed by
day. After pain, you feel more joy in pleasure, as stated:
• After pitch darkness, like the sigh of light, similarly
after experiencing sufferings, pleasure is more
enjoyable. One who is facing troubles becomes poor,
such a person though alive bodily, is considered like a
dead one.

• So, even in troubles and sufferings we must thank
God that we have endured our sins' results, And now
the good days are bound to come, which we can enjoy
keeping our head erect.
RECOGNISE YOUR ABILITIES
• When a young man scans most of the advertisements, he feels discouraged

because experience of some years is required. Therefore, he begins to feel
short of the necessary requirement and does not dare to apply for the job for
which he knows full and he is quite suitable to. In case he has the requisite
confidence in himself, he should go ahead and apply for the job, stating
that the experience is bound to come as and when he is employed and his
skill is assessed.

• And in case he is called for an interview, he should not feel scared, but on

the contrary, he must try his best to stand tall, not only physically, but also
mentally and spiritually, seeking God Almighty's guidance all the while. Of
course, he must do his best applying all his ability and skill in the job and
deserve his selection over those who were experienced, more so by showing
his initiative and the imagination, that may prove to the employers that a
young man with vision is far better than an experienced hand, who has
fallen in some routine expertise!
• Even a child when learns to walk uses some confidence in self and, of

course, by and by he begins to walk. Why this natural phenomenon is not
taken cognizance by the employers insisting all the while on experience? I
am certain any person who wants a really good employee should like to
have a young man with initiative and drive, rather than one who wants to
leave his previous job. But both have their own merits and demerits. But
we must try to assess our own abilities and potentials. as to my mind there
is nothing that one cannot learn, if he is keen and desirous. And certainly
these qualities matter a lot, besides education, knowledge and
understanding of the job in question.

• You must be seeing your face in the mirror many times a day and feel

pleased with the personality you have. But personality in the real sense in
revealed the moment you speak, more so by your day-to-day behaviour and
conduct in life. But the total personality your possess consists in your inner
qualities, more than your external physical appearance. So, you must feel
pleased and satisfied with your inner self about which many times even
you are not aware of, if you do not care to be introspective and a hard
task-master.
• However, one thing is certain that you possess a great potential and can

easily become great, if you begin to learn more about yourself and with
determination and self-confidence acquire the abilities which directly
attract your attention. What is most essential is, never feel shy in learning
and in the long run you are bound to be happy with your achievements.
Confidence comes by doing the work, which in turn is called experience; so
experience is nothing but hard work and those who have initiative can
actually do and repeatedly perform such work through imagination and
even create the likely hurdles and solve them.

• What matters most is hard work and in so far as the salary is concerned, it

is bound to come in the process itself. I know a young man, one of my
friends, who is a qualified engineer, but is jobless, despite the fact that he
got some work and worked there for about two years, but subsequently
retrenched. Thereafter he got another job, which he himself left as he
considered that his employers were not giving him due regard to his status.
Now for quite some time he is jobless, and has come to me for help and
advice. One must prove his worth, so that his employers may begin to feel
his presence, in that he should make his position inevitable, as if he is a
necessary part of the machinery without which the organization cannot
function smoothly.
• Work is life according to our Vedic philosophy. And when we have to

work why not do it in the best manner possible? In the 40th Chapter of
Yajur Veda as also in Ishopanishad, we have been advised: Aspire Oh
Man! To live through virtuous and noble deeds for a hundred years, in
peace with all. Thus alone, and not otherwise, will thy deeds not influence
thee. Doing your duty for the sake of duty and most efficiently that may
have the stamp of your individuality on it should be your aim in life.

• In Sanskrit, there is a quotation: One who does not recognize his own self,

knows nothing. Hence please concentrate on your own abilities and never
try to belittle them when the time to put them into action presents in your
life. This is also self-assessment and certainly you have immense powers,
but you do not know these.

• In Rig-Veda it is stated, a man who does not work but remains idle, is an

enemy of the society. But in our country many people do not find any work
to do, either physical or mental, because of the wrong system of education
and the wrong policies of the Government. Otherwise our country has so
much to do, while, on the other hand, so much of manpower is going waste.
What a pity?
• Oh Man! do your work yourself and enjoy its rewards. We must have the

ability to work hard, thereby keeping ourselves self-reliant and strong, as a
Sanskrit poet has written: Oh Youngman! Labour so hard with your body
that you may get so much perspired and your sweat may begin to run like
water. Even intelligent persons who keep busy on mental exercises, must
do some physical work to keep healthy and fit.

• Ability comes by doing the work and it is much better to start from the

lowest rung of the ladder and ultimately reach the top, rather than sit at
the top and then feel frustration! In such cases, I would advise people to
utilize their intellect and imagination, by initiating such other activities in
the organization that may prove helpful, not only to the institution, but to
the country as a whole.

• In this connection, the story of how a lion cub got somehow mixed up in

the herd of jackals and began behaving like them is relevant. But after
sometime when he saw his image in the water, he realized his own self and
the abilities and the prowess that he possessed and began to roar like a
lion.
ENJOY YOURSELF WHILE YOU GROW :
• A good sense of humour may well be called as the sixth essential . A total

want of it may be as good an affliction as the absence of any other five
essential senses. Hippocrates recognized four main "humours" ( phlegm,
blood, choler and black bile) in the human body. These were also called "
streams" or "currents" . If all the four "streams" flowed normally, one was
said to be in good humour.

• Humour has been defined variously by various people but everybody agrees

that its physical manifestation is a smile or laughter. Kant said that the
cause of laughter was "the sudden transformation of a tense expectation
into nothing. Henri Bergson says it is "the feeling of relief." With humour,
we can establish a congenial atmosphere for ourselves as well as others
who come in contact with us. This helps greatly in times of stress and
enables us to come out of many a crisis unscarred.
• We can do ourselves a lot of good if we remember that except in case of

stark tragedy there is always a humorous side to every aspect of life.
Humour also serves as a kind of ego booster. A tale about people can be
told to show that they are ignorant and thus assure us of our own
superiority, if the superiority is just a supposed one, then the comic effect is
higher still. It takes a lot of large heartedness for a person to be able to
laugh at his own self. When a person realizes that the joke is on him and
even then enjoys it, laughs at it, be considered a beneficiary of humour.

• The fact is that life is too serious to be taken seriously, unless we can

develop the lighter side of our natures, the tragedy of life will overwhelm
us. The flippant are to balance grief. Laughter is needed to atone for tears.
A sense of humour prevents a man from inflating himself with an absurd
dignity. It saves him from being laughed at. It enables him to be a man
among men . The man who conceives of himself as an idol has few
worshippers.
• "Laugh and the world laughs with you; weep, and you alone. weep" No one would pay

to see the most dignified man in the world, but people pay hundreds of millions to see
comedians. ln the handling of audiences, every effective speaker has found that by the
use of humour a crowd of people can be welded into a unit. An audience, too, can be
"heated". It must be relaxed and warmed into sympathy with the speaker by his wit
and humour. A cold audience sits critical and unconvinced. People are brightened up.
They begin to give attrition. They forget their suspicions. They cease being on their
guard.

• Their natures are changed as much as the nature of iron is when it is made red-hot.

Man is said to be the crown of creation for he is widowed with several faculties
which distinguish him from the lower species. One such faculty is his ability to laugh.
A smiling nature increases our strength. It also adds to our efficiency. A man who
"sings" at his work accomplishes more in the same time and does it better than the
sony-head.

• A sense of humour acts like a wine in social life. It increases warmth and lubricates

our relationship with other human beings. Thus, it enriches social life. "There is
nothing like fun, is there? We need all the counter-weights we can muster to balance
sad relations of life. God has made sunny spots in the hearts; why should we exclude
the light from them?" asks Haliburton. THE CHEERFUL MAN IS A KING.
THE ART OF LEARNING
• There is a quotation - "A Learned person learns from his experiences, but a

more learned one learns from others' experiences." All the inventions and
discoveries have been made through practical experiments. What is the use
of such a knowledge or education which is written in books but not
utilized. The Chinese saint Confucius says - "Man should not only wander
in search of knowledge, but should try to utilize the same in life."

• Mahatma Gandhi has written - "Whatever portion of knowledge, filled in
the minds of men, is utilized has its value; the rest is nothing but useless
burden. "Hence the value of learning in our practical life is so visible that
all the people feel wonder at such noble people and consider it a miracle,
because of the penance and hardship entailed in their practice. Hence we
should keep an ideal in mind and learn the method of practicing the same.
• The value of physical work is much less as compared to the
mental or intellectual. Hence try to learn and find out new
fields and pastures that have remained untraversed so far.
We should always increase our mental faculties, In Rig Veda,
we have been told: Whatever objective a man thinks in his
mind and works in that direction, he is able to achieve the
same.

• It is aid that the three foundations of learning are: (1) seeing
much, (2) suffering much, and (3) studying much. While as a
student, most of our knowledge comes through listening, as
we advance in age, we can devise various other methods to
make education interesting experience.
• Just as a child is curious to learn more and more about as many things as

possible, it is a human trait and we must be curious to learn in detail going
into the depth of all what we want to study. We can always keep this
trait in mind and utilize it for better purpose, making our learning
interesting at the same time. This idea if practiced daily can even become
exhilarating and as a result you will feel happy at the end of the day.
Because of the simple fact that your have not undertaken this as a task or
work, but as a play and this mood should give you pleasure, instead of
being tired. But I would like to caution you here that even play or game
has become 'work' for those who have taken this seriously and earn money
thereby as is happening in today' world. What an irony of the situation in
that physical games, e.g., boxing, lawn tennis, cricket, etc., are more paying
job than any other work, excepting the tinsel world actors. But they also
play as actors and actresses for people to enjoy.

• How far they themselves enjoy, is difficult to surmise!
• The question is how to make the process of learning so interesting that a

student may naturally feel attracted towards it? Generally, most of the
students consider it a burden, so tedious a responsibility as has been said in
a Hindi proverb.
• According to most of the students, it is unpleasant and boring
as also a distasteful imposition from outside; they do not put
their heart and soul in their work, thus ending with a second or
third division.

• Manu Maharaj writes in his famous book Manu-Smriti: The
more persistently, perseveringly and regularly a person studies a
subject, the more he will be ale to understand its basic concepts,
and that which appeared to be tough to follow in the beginning
will become quite interesting. Some Hindi poet has also written:

• With constant practice, even a dull-witted person becomes an
expert. Practice makes a man perfect. Hence if a student works
hard and continues to do so regularly without break, he is
bound to succeed in his mission. There can be no two opinions
on this point. If you learn the hard way and overcome the
difficulties with courage, you will relish your work all the more
and are not likely to forget easily what you have learnt.
• Even otherwise whatever is learnt and memorized as a child, is not likely

to be forgotten. Experience tells us that childhood memories become our
life-long partners. Nowadays 'learn while you play' methods are being
devised, particularly for small children who grasp the fundamentals of
their subject without being conscious of it. For grown-up children, lessons
on different subjects are given on television. This makers the task of
learning easy and interesting, because even ten thousand spoken words
cannot make such a great impact on the mind as one visual scene.

• Indeed it is one of the greatest lessons of life that the burdens we carry by

necessity or by choice, instead of weighing us down can actually lift us up
in life. Certainly the students who have to accept the burden of learning,
because there is no escape from it, why not change your attitude towards
the burden and sing your way through life, thus making it not only
acceptable but interesting and pleasant? Your learning will actually lift
you up ultimately and will make your life purposeful, like the burdensome
wings of the birds that become attached to their backs, enabling them to
fly. Your learning and education will certainly lift you up in life!
Communication With Your Boss

• Communication with your boss is one of the most important
things you will ever have to do at work. It may not be listed
on your duty statement, but we all know that if we cannot
establish good on-going communications with our manager
then chances are that our work life will not be as rewarding
as it should be. In fact, work could turn out to be a real
disappointment.

•

Whilst good communication requires co-operation of both
parties, sometimes it falls upon the employee to initiate an
improvement. What follows is a list of practical tips that
will help you improve your communication with your boss
and hopefully make your work life a lot more enjoyable and
procedure.
• Good communication are frequent. If you and your boss are not

communicating on a regular basis chances are that misunderstanding and
mistakes will emerge. It’s in your interest, therefore, to try to set up regular
meetings with your boss where important issues and expectations are
classified. These meetings do not have to be long or official. They just have to
be regular.

• Make sure your boss delegates work clearly.

One of the most common
sources of communication problems is employees misunderstanding what their
bosses expect of them. Often this happens because boss is too busy to take the
time to explain things properly. Next time your boss gives your work be sure
he/she provides you enough detail so you know exactly what’s expected of
you. Be sure that you clarify by issues such as deadlines, quality of work,
money & resources to be used. Running good meetings it is important that
your meetings are run in a way in which everyone gets a fair say and that
people are encouraged to disagree in an open and constructive way. If your
boss, or other individuals, are dominating meetings and / or intimidating
people you may wish, when time is appropriate, to raise this issue in the spirit
of improved communications. If you do this, be sure you avoid making
negative or inflammatory remarks. For example, instead of saying “ I don’t
think you are doing a good job running our meetings,” you could say “I think
I know of way in which we can get more out of our meetings.”
• Avoid letting problems fester inside of you. It’s generally much healthier to

bring problems out in the open before they are acknowledged and work &
on. Good communications are open about their work related issues. The key
is to avoid saying things in a way that management unnecessarily promote
people. Using “I” statements can be very helpful here. For example, instead
of saying “ I can’t stand the way you talk to me,” you can say, “ Every
time you raise your voice at me, I feel threatened. Then I can’t do my work
properly. Can we talk about getting to a solution?”

• Be very aware of your body language. Research shows that we
communicate much more via our body language than we think. It’s self
defeating to use positive verbal language if your body language is negative.
Negative body language usually comes from feeling bad so, try to stay
positive.

• Remember that your boss will immediately pick up your negativity via your

body language. Good communications possess the discipline to overcome
their immediate emotions for the longer term good.

Island, where the ringing of the mission bells transforms us into articulate,
attractively attired aristocrats. We no longer trip, fumble, spill, or grope;
we converse, captivate, charm, and inspire. When the show is over, we
switch off our mind-set and resume our test pattern of life. As we stare at
cur blank screens, we wonder why our “situation comedy” was canceled;
why we’ve been replaced by the new stars who play their roles with
confidence; why we seem to be cast as misfits.
We rush off to personality courses that promise to transform us into
sparkling wits within twenty-four hours; self-evaluation experiences that
will make us into minigods with maxi-power; or sensitivity sessions, where
we will feel our way into a fantastic future. We o expecting miracles and
come home disappointed. We don’t fit the mold of the exciting person,
bursting with potential, pictured as the norm. we have different drives,
abilities, and personalities-and we can’t be treated as the same.
No Two Alike
If we were all identical eggs in a carton, a giant mother hen could warm us
up and turn us into slick chicks or loving roosters overnight; but we are all
different. We were all born with our own set of strengths and weaknesses,
and no magic formula works wonders for all us. Until we recognize our
uniqueness, we can’t understand how people can sit in the same seminar
with the same speaker for the same amount of time and all achieve
different degrees of success.
Personality Plus looks at each one of us as an individual blend of the four
basic temperaments and encourages us to get acquainted with the real me
underneath before trying to change what shows in the surface.
It’s What’s Underneath That
Counts

When Michelangelo was ready to carve the status of David, he
spent a long time in selecting the marble, for he knew the
quality of the raw material would determine the beauty of the
finished product. He knew he could change the shape of the
stone, but he couldn’t transform the basic ingredient.
Every masterpiece he made was unique, for even if he had
wanted to, he would not have been able to find a duplicate piece
of marble. Even if he cut a block from the same quarry, it
wouldn’t have been exactly the same. Similar, yes, but not the
same.
Each One of Us Is Unique
We started out with a combination of ingredients that made us different
from our brothers and our sisters. Over the years people have chiseled on
us,
chipped, hammered, sanded, and buffed. Just when we thought we were
finished products, someone would start shaping us up again. Occasionally
we’d enjoy a day in the park, when everyone who passed by admired us and
stroked us, but at other times we were ridiculed, analyzed, or ignored.
We were all born with our own temperament trails, our raw material. Our
own kind of rock. Some of us are granite, some marble, some alabaster,
some sandstone. Our type of rock doesn’t change, but our shapes can be
altered. So it is with our personalities. We start with our own set of inborn
traits. Some of our qualities are beautiful with strains of gold. Some are
Blemished with fault lines of gray. Our circumstances, IQ, nationality,
economics, environment, and parental influence can mold our personalities,
My temperament is real me; my personality is the dress I put on
over me. I can look in the mirror in the morning and see a plain
face, straight hair, and a bulgy body. That’s the real me.
Gratefully, within an hour I can apply makeup to create a
colorful face; I can plug in the curling iron to fluff up my hair;
and I can put on a flattering dress to camouflage too many
curves. I’ve taken the real mc and dressed it up, but I haven’t
permanently changed what’s underneath.
If only we could understand ourselves:
Know what we’re made of
Know who we really arc
Know why we react as we do
Know our strengths and how to amplify them
Know our weaknesses and how to overcome them
We can! Personality Plus will show us how to examine
ourselves, how to polish up our strengths, and how to chip away
our weaknesses. When we know who we are and why we act
the way we do, we can begin to understand our inner selves,
improve our personalities, and learn to get along with others.
We are not going to try to imitate someone else, put on a
brighter dress or new tie, or cry over the kind of stone we’re
made from. We’re going to do the very best we can with the raw
material available.
In recent years manufacturers have found ways to duplicate
some of the classic statues, and in any large gift store you may
find dozens of Davids, walls of Washingtons, lines of Lincolns,
replicas of Reagan, and clones of Cleopatra. Imitations abound,
but there’s only one you.
Where Do We Start?

How many of you have a Michelangelo complex? How many of
you look at other people as raw material, ready to be carved up
by your expert hand? How many of you can think of at least one
person whom you could really shape up if only he’d listen to
your words of wisdom? How anxious is he to hear from you?
If it were possible to remake other people, my husband, Fred,
and I would be perfect, for we set out to chip away at each
other right from the beginning. I knew that if he’d loosen up
and have fun, we could have a good marriage: but he wanted me
to straighten up and get organized. On our honeymoon I found
out Fred and I didn’t even agree on eating grapes!
I always enjoyed plunking a whole bunch of cold, green grapes beside me and plucking off
whichever one appealed to me. Until I married Fred, I didn’t know there were “Grape Rules.”
I
didn’t know each simple pleasure in life had a so-called right way. Fred first brought up the
Grape Rule as I was sitting on the patio outside our cottage at Cambridge Beaches in
Bermuda,
looking out to sea and absentmindedly pulling grapes off a large bunch, I didn’t realize Fred
was analyzing my unsystematic eating of the fruit until he asked, ‘Do you like grapes?”
‘Oh, I love grapes!”
Then I assume you’d like to know how to eat them correctly?”
On that I snapped out of my romantic reveries and asked a question that subsequently became
a
part of a regular routine: “What did I do wrong?”
‘‘It not that you’re doing it wrong: you’re just not doing it right.’’ I couldn’t see that there
was
much of a difference, but 1 phrased it his way.
“Anyone knows that to eat grapes properly, you cut off a little bunch at a
time, like this.”
Fred pulled out his nail clippers and snipped off a small cluster of grapes,
which he set before me.
As he stood smugly staring down at me, I asked, “Does this make them taste better?”
“It’s not for taste. It’s so the large bunch will keep its looks longer. The way you eat
them—just grabbing grapes here and there—leaves the bunch a wreck. Look at what
you’ve done to it! See all those tiny bare stems, sticking up all over the place? They ruin
the shape of the whole bunch.” I glanced around the secluded patio to see if there was
some hidden group of grape judges waiting to enter my bunch in a contest, but seeing
none, I said, “Who cares?”
I had not yet learned that “Who cares?” was not a statement to make to Fred, because it
caused him to turn red and sigh with hopelessness, “1 care, and that should be enough.”
Appearance
Looks and personality are two separate lines, meaning that one may not be
so much dependent on the other. A person who is not originally a good looker,
may, all the same, have a strong personality. Conversely, a handsome or
beautiful person may not be having any personality to speak of.
Nonetheless, appearance can be improved upon, and this will, to a great
extent, enhance the overall personality of a person. A person may be welldressed and may be chronically quite the opposite of it. To wear neat and clean
dresses and look well-groomed is a matter of habit, and if one makes it a habit,
it would become one’s second nature.
To better one’s appearance, dressing up properly should be one’s duty. A person
who wears well-pressed and clean clothes, and is bathed, cleaned and shaved
etc. will give out a pleasant feeling in others, irrespective of that person’s
status or rank.
A person, who is well-dressed, need not be over-dressed or expensively dressed
but he can look good and would also send the signal of various other
messages about him to others. The first of these is that irrespective of his
economic situation, he is managing his affairs well, to present a moderately
good and acceptable picture of himself to the outside world.
Just imagine meeting a person or an old acquaintance who is clean and neat
in appearance with hair cut and proper in place, shoed shining and clothes
fresh and pressed, and while talking he takes out of his pocket an
unblemished handkerchief, you will at once conclude that this acquaintance
of yours, is not doing badly, even if not doing more-than-well.
There is no doubt that in the society there are all kinds of people, that is,
those who are rich and those who are not so. But there is an acceptable social
standard which will make a person of moderate personality likeable by all.
One’s primary duty therefore is to make oneself with a presentable
personality.
In the matter of dresses, matching of clothes is an essential choice, a
discretion or taste which requires to be cultivated. A part of this taste, this
selection of clothes, is inborn and comes with the family background and
status of a person. But much of this taste for clothes can be developed
through training, mixing and adequate liaison with society. If one keeps
one’s eyes and observation open, one is apt to see, well-dressed persons, in
parties, functions, even on the streets and markets. A person, who wants to
improve in this direction, will easily pick up the clues.
It is a wrong notion to believe that only expensive clothes will improve
one’s personality. There is no doubt that expensive clothes do draw attention,
but there are occasions for wearing such clothes. If in a simple occasion one
wears heavy and expensive dresses then one becomes prominent from negative
angle.
Matching of clothes depend on various situations, like the weather, that is,
cold, hot raining season, spring. Also, there are ceremonies like marriage,
parties, official and informal get-together, picnics, outings, and other
occasions, and for all these occasions, there should be different sets of
clothes.
Further, clothes are to suit one’s personality, complexion, figure, disposition, status and so
on. The president of company has to dress in one way, the manager in another manner,
down to other staff. Airlines have their own dresses. Some factories distinguishes their
factory personnel from office staff by two sets of uniforms. This method is followed to
maintain office propriety, meaning, everybody would be suitably dressed, neither overdressed nor under-dressed.
Not only the complexion or figure of a person, wearing a certain type of dress, but also the
disposition of he person is to be taken into account . If a person is of cheerful and jovial
disposition, then colourful or even gorgeous outfits could suit him. But f he or she is of
grave and silent type then sober clothes would bring out better sides of such person’s
personality.
lnner culture of a person comes out on his face and oozes out of his nature. His c
countenance and personality acquire sheen and shine with a radiance. This Is the
proverbial glow of culture while one cannot much change one’s physical appearance, one
can acquire better culture, more education and appreciable social behaviour.
As one acquires more culture which may come out of meeting and mixing with more people
socially, in business or otherwise, one may gradually come out of one’s shell, one may
widen one’s outlook, expand one’s vision, and get more integrated with one’s people,
crossing all distinctions of caste, creed, religion and other diversities.
When we speak of appearance, therefore, we can not limit
ourselves to our appearance of the body or figure. But our
appearance would be a sum-total of our attributes of which our
looks form only a part. Still, physical appearance, itself can be
bettered, if a person is ready to improve It with expert advice.
There is the whole set of beautification literature which caters
mainly for boosting up female beauty. The business sector of
cosmetics and garments, among other accessories, through the
medium of striking models fashion parades, etc, seeks to capture
the consumer’s preferences. These competitive activities, apart
from supplying beauty-aids to the people open up their mental
acumen for higher personal attainments in looks and actions.
A direction from such literature mentions that bold men should cut there hair close to their
heads. That would render them more presentable and would also make some bold men
quite
handsome in their own way. Similarly women have been seen to enhance their looks
through varying their hair style or even cutting their long hair shorter, and so on.
On a person’s personality or disposition, an English author has written that a gentleman
is gentle with people who are gentle, strong with those who are strong, rude with those
who behave rudely, and so on and so forth. Thus, a gentleman varies his actions according
to persons, places and events, and it is this variability in his nature that makes him
invariable in his dealings with others. Thus, he maintains his balance in all situations. He
does whatever he is called upon to do, that is, to be soft, firm, gentle, angry, rude, etc. He
looks bending, but is in fact unbending. Contrary to popular belief, a gentleman is not
always polite or accommodating but would rise to the occasion to behave to get for him
the
justice and dignity that he deserves.
The different postures that would bring out one’s personality to one’s best advantage has
already been referred to and discussed. Avoiding repetition, it may be mentioned that that
appearance includes a person’s gait, walking, sitting, standing, and other postures,
Because talking of looks, a person’s looks are reflected from different angles. Hence, a
person has to look Pleasing not only when he is sitting, but also when he is standing
In a man s nature including a woman s’traite there may be superiority or Inferiority complexes,
which could do much damage to his or her personality. Both these complexes are bad for the
development of one’s personality. A superiority complex may grow because of looks, educational
or other achievements, from riches, family background, among others.
The same aforementioned causes may lead to an inferiority complex. A person may feel inferior
because of a number of reasons. One main reason might be that he has not achieved much. Another
reason could be that he had not been able to do what he wanted to do.
When a person is able to do what he wanted to do which could mean that he wanted to be a famous
singer, an actor, a high-class bureaucrat, a businessman, among others, there could hardly be any gap
in his personality. If the gaps in his wishes are fulfilled, then a man’s ego or his nature’s complex
may remain at a level. Hence, when there is suppression of wishes either through circumstances or
though other causes, a man may not be normal to himself. He may feel inferior, or to suppress that
complex he may adopt a superior stance and may try to pinpoint his other achievements.
Work and sincere effort can get a man out of this rut of complexes in his nature, which would stand
in the way of his full normal activities. Since, these complexes are mental affairs; their pressures
would diminish with constructive and fruitful work and its continuity.
POSTURE
It is bearing, disposition, demeanour and poise that determine the pattern
of our lives. A man may stand erect or stoop, he may sit smartly or lazily,
he may speak nicely and soothingly or crudely — these and their variations
are all part of good manners. A good posture indicates your good
upbringing and the poised human body is one that ought to look as nature
meant it to do so — upright, straight and beautiful. It is in the poised and
healthy body that the poised and healthy mind is mast often found.
Sitting Pretty
Anyone and everyone always sits down but graceful sitting begins with the
manner in which you approach your chair. The first thing to bear in mind is
that the act of sitting down should be done quietly. You should not plonk
yourself down on a chair or scramble for a seat. Deliberate controlled
movements are needed.
Hands: While sitting down, hands are particularly important. It is your
hands that pose a problem, if you do not know what to do with
them. Your nervousness may be apparent from the tremor through
your hands. You should therefore learn how to place your hands
properly either on the hands of the chair, or on your lap, or else
they will get in your way and look very ungainly. Hands that are
relaxed give you an aura of serenity and poise. Avoid jerky
movements.
Legs: Legs also play an important role in your self-composure, poise and
confidence. Do not shake or jerk your legs constantly. Besides
being an unwelcome distraction to others, they look indecent. The
cardinal rule for a lady when she sits is to keep her knees together.
Talking while sitting: When carrying on a conversation while sitting,
you
should be careful that your body movements are well synchronized
so that they project a good personality. These movements become
an aid to your posture. Smiles, acknowledgments, nods and so on
should be combined with all these.
Standing : Standing is sometimes more difficult than sitting. One reason is that it causes
more strain. There are various modes of standing(a) Standing straight with your hands hanging loosely at the sides.
(b) With your feet a little apart and your hands clasped behind you this is
termed standing at ease.
(c) Slight stooping or bowing as a mark of respect.
(d) Some people prefer standing with their hands on their hips. This is the worst
form of standing and indicates that the person has no manners at all. It not
only shows disrespect to others but also portrays an indifferent aggressive
attitude.
(e) If you are dealing with a V.I.P., it would be better to adopt a posture of
alertness instead of one of laid-back serenity.
Talking while standing: When you are holding a conversation with another person
and
both are standing, your attention should not be diverted. But if you are sitting
when an other person strikes up a conversation, you should get up immediately
and talk to him. You should not let your attention be diverted elsewhere. The
only exception to the rule is if you are the host and have the responsibility of
welcoming and seeing to the convenience of your guests, it is permissible for you
to allow your attention to wander while in conversation.
Good Posture Habits
By teaching your child good posture habits, you have not only saved his health
but a lot of future embarrassment as well.
Sitting with a straight back, standing with ease and walking with the head
held high arc the basics of a good posture. Posture is very closely associated
with one’s nature. If you sit erect, use your hands properly and know how to
manage your legs while sitting in a group, you portray an image of a confident
and composed person. Fumbling with your things unnecessarily, shaking your
legs, touching your nose, ears or hair, and playing with your fingers — these
give you away by demonstrating your nervousness. Correct your child
whenever you find him stooping. Stop him firmly if he is getting into the habit
of shaking his legs while in conversation. Teach him how to walk and sit
gracefully. You can make him understand the importance of a good posture by
showing him two different persons with good and bad posture habits
respectively. The difference is so obvious that it will not be difficult to explain
the importance of good posture to him.
Impatience : Enemy of Good Posture
Have you ever noticed that person pacing up and down the floor,
scratching his ear, poking his nose, cracking his fingers, or looking at his
watch every 10 seconds? What did you say? “He is in a big hurry.” For
what? No Sir, he is only waiting for a table in this restaurant, for which
the manager has already told him that it would take 10 minutes. He is just
a very impatient man. And this is revealed in his posture habits. He forgets
all the basics of good posture as this devil of a habit – impatience – takes
over. So be warned, even if you are an impatient kind of person, hide it
tactfully and maintain your poise and charm. Remember, a delay of a few
minutes will not cause havoc in your life. The sky will still be there when
you look up five minutes later.
Do’s and Don’ts
Keep your back and head straight and don’t stoop. Talk
without shifting around in your chair. Sit with knees close together—
never wide apart. Don’t take up more space than required. Avoid making
unnecessary and flamboyant gestures.
Don’t sit too close to the persons on either side of you. If walking in a
crowd, try keeping pace with others — don’t lag behind or stride ahead.
Don’t stop suddenly — others will walk into you.
If walking with a lady, walk on the outer side somewhat protectively.
Don’t walk too fast so that she has to run keep pace with you.
DRESS—CODEthe fairer sex.)
(This chapter may be skipped by men as it focuses on
Dress to suit your figure, face and personality. Clothing — no matter how artfully
designed, how perfectly made, how fashionably styled— must always be judged on the
basis of its relationship to the wearer. When selecting clothes and accessories, you must
have a complete understanding of yourself, your figure, face and personality — this will
help you achieve distinction and personal attractiveness.
Costly the raiment as thy purse can afford, Rich but not gaudy...
For apparel oft proclaims the man.”
— Shakespeare
Good taste may be defined as a refined look, leaning more towards the conservative and simple
than a flamboyant spectacular. Remember these points.

Avoid offensively revealing clothes. Never be ostentatious or over ornamented. Avoid fancy
jewelry for day-time wear. Do not follow fashion blindly. Make sure you are neat and clean.

Simplicity and Good Taste

Status symbols have never had more power than they have today. Titan watches, Action
shoes, Big Joe’s T-shirts, Kala Mandir sarees, City Look sweaters and Weekender shirts
are taking over. But do not panic, if you cannot afford them. It is still possible to look good
without investing so much in either your apparel or accessories. It is preferable to carry a
good though small leather purse than to carry an ostentatious, flashy and more expensive
one from Cottage Emporiurn.
A well-stitched reasonably priced salwar suit is much more appealing than a tightly fitting
gaudy outfit from an expensive shop.
Natural fibers such as cotton, wool and silk are not only stylish but are also classic fibers
that are acceptable in any place.

•

Select a good quality material and have it stitched by reliable tailor.

•

Flatter your figure and skin: A critical self-analysis is essential for you to get fully
acquainted with your own body structure.
Slim figures: A slim, perfectly proportioned figure will have no problem with clothes. It is the
overweight or too-thin that that must be careful.

•

Plump figures: Those overweight should avoid horizontal lines, pleats, ribbing and
tucking, contrasting colours, accentuating belts, yokes, etc. Instead they should go in for
vertical lines, stripes, button front-closing from neck to hem.

•

Thin figures: The too-thin girl must wear garments that add to her figure giving an
illusion of fullness.
Colours
As far as colours go, let us put them into the divisions given above.

• Plump girls: Overweight girls/women should go in for staple colours of black,
navy brown, or dark grey. Deep reds, dark toned greens, low-keyed purples
also suit her. She should avoid shocking pink, fire-engine red, brilliant
whites. The overweight should definitely avoid spotted prints, shiny finish
and go in for small, patterned prints in muted colour combinations.

• Thin girls: A thin girl on the other hand can wear staple colours but in

heavier textures and contrasting lines that will seem to fill her out. A petite
girl should never wear large or widely spaced prints.

Fitting In
Smoothness is the key to a good fit— not so tight that they wrinkle
everywhere and not so loose that they hang. A sai’warsuit or a midi looks
best when properly fitted. Most women have this misconception that they
need only two or three blouses in basic colours to go with all their sarees.
They also do not give much importance to the fitting of the blouse. An
unmatched badly fitted blouse or an ankle- length petticoat mars the beauty
of even the most expensive saree.
Colour Blending

Colour blending is a very important boost to one’s personality. If you
are fair, all colours will suit you, especially pastel colours such as pale
pink, blue, lemon, beige, cream, light green etc. For a whitish and dark
complexion, slightly dark colours are used.
Colour combination is an important aspect of dressing. Most women go wrong
by using one blouse (usually black) with all the sarees. If you can spend a
bundle on a saree, why not make it look more presentable by investing onetenth of its cost in accessories? Men too should be careful about their colour
combinations. Oranges, pinks, yellows, reds and greens are considered ladies’
colours. Men should avoid them. Their best colours are grey, beige, blue and
shades of these colour families.
Although age groups used to matter earlier, these days all colours are worn by people
despite their age group. A few years back, it was believed that dull grey shades, all light
colors and various shades of cream belonged to the older generation, whereas all bright
colors were meant for young people. However, with changing Limes, these rules have
undergone a tremendous change. Today, if you buy a pink saree with a navy blue border
for your mother, she will not give it to your wife, saying it’s not her age to wear such
Colours. Instead, she will wear it quite happily.
However, there is no denying that sober colours do belong to the upper age
group (say, above 40), as they indicate their maturity and bright and gaudy
colours and dresses adapt well with young ones and children who are full of
youth and bubbling with energy. Thus, their brightness and freshness
matches best with the bright colours. Children, however, can wear any
colour. But their best bet is bright colours, since childhood represents
freedom from all worries and troubles, a carefree attitude, and so do these
colours.
Accessories
Purses: A purse is a major accessory for women and should be bought
keeping in mind your requirements. A leather purse always looks better than
that of foam leather. There are different purses for different occasions and
purposes. If, for example, you have a baby and you need to carry his water
bottle and a few other things in your bag, a clutch purse will not serve the
purpose. It is better in such a case to buy a large leather bag, spacious
enough to hold all these things. Keep the small beaded clutch purse for
social evenings. A smart medium-sized bag with a shoulder strap should he
kept for going to office.
Do not overload your bag. It is never considered good manners if you spend
half an hour searching for your hanky scattering your belongings all over the
place. A bulging bag is very inelegant.
Shoes: Buy shoes to go with your outfit rather than buying them at
random and impulsively and then trying to make them match your
clothes. If you cannot afford-many pairs, shoes in the three basic
colours of black, brown, and maroon will do. Though high heels arc
very fashionable, do not go in for them unless you are confident and
comfortable in stilettos. If your toes are pinched and feet cramped in
tight-fitting shoes, the agony will be reflected on your face, besides
making you irritable and snappy. If you are uncomfortable with the
height of your heels, you will be unduly concerned about
maintaining your balance and normal gait.
Handkerchief: A hanky should always be part of a person’s
wardrobe. Delicate lace-edged handkerchiefs for women and fullsized white ones with thin stripes for men should be used. They
should be spotless, neatly ironed and changed daily. Remember
even a little thing like a hanky goes a long way in building your
personality and image.
Jewelry: Avoid the tendency to bedeck yourself with loads of jewelry in an
effort to show off what you have. For college students, small studs in the
ears or small rings, or a single bangle are sufficient. If you don’t want to
wear gold, the market is full of chunky, inexpensive jewelry ideal for the
college student. Keep the gold for weddings and other special occasions.
Match your jewelry with your outfit, keeping the occasion in mind. You
cannot wear junk stuff with a Kanjeevaram saree to a wedding. If you are
going for a formal party or a reception, a gold set (earrings, chain, bangles,
ring — all with the same design) may be worn. Precious stones embedded
in gold look elegant when worn with a saree of the same hue. Diamonds
and pearls go with everything.
Grooming: Needless to say that a well-dressed person falls short of the
mark if he/she has not paid attention to personal grooming. Deodorants/
antiperspirants are a must in our hot climate. Do not drench yourself in
perfume or after—shave. Spray on just enough so that a pleasant smell
emanates from you. You need not go in for imported perfumes. A dash of
rose water in your bath will do the trick.
The indigenous ittars are as good as any imported perfume.
The Appropriate Dress
We dress for various occasions — attending office, a wedding, dance, party, or just an
informal get-together with old friends. Clothes reflect the aspirations and psyche of the
wearer. Just as a heavily embroidered saree on a picnic would be totally inappropriate,
so would minis or jeans be frowned upon if worn by a girl when she meets her
prospective in-laws or husband-to-be for the first time. The same bright red outfit which
looked stunning at a party will be a total misfit at a funeral. A nicely starched ktirtapyjaina will look out of place at a business meeting where every other man present is
dressed in a suit. Likewise, the same clothes you prefer to wear to office will not do for a
formal garden party.
For example, you have recently got married and your husband is happy to escort you around in
clothes of you own choice, be it jeans, skirts, etc. But it would be insensitive of you to wear the same
clothes when he takes you to meet his old, conservative grandfather for the first time. A saree or
even a modest salwar-kameez would be most suited in this instance. In the same way, your husband
should not insist on wearing his cut-off jeans or shorts when your relatives come visiting.
This reminds me of an instance. A friend of mine, soon after completing her MA, got a job as a
lecturer in a college. She did not give much consideration to what she wore on her first day at college
and ended up wearing the first available garment she found — a skirt. The moment she entered the
gates, she was accosted by a group of seniors who on mistaking her for a fresher began ragging her.
Her protests fell on deaf ears and they thought she was fooling them by saying she was a lecturer.
Later, when the truth came out, she was the laughing stock of the whole campus.

Dresses for Children
Compared to their elders, children have a wider variety of clothes to choose
from. While boys can wear a pant-shirt or kurta-pyjarna combination for nonformal occasions, and a coat-pant, shervani or safari for formal affairs, girls can
have their pick from a range of lovely frocks to suit every occasion. They can
also wear a lehanga-chunri to weddings. Girls have the advantage over boys
as they can even wear pants or shorts. When choosing clothes for children,
keep in mind their convenience and comfort. A silk shervani for your son in
May or a thin cotton dress for your daughter in December will not do. Avoid
dressing very small babies and infants in expensive silks and too many frills or
flounces.
YOUR BEHAVIOUR
‘You’re better than anyone else.
Forget about learning to be polite.
You don’t need to be polite.
You have a divine right.
The ‘Thank you’ and ‘You are welcome’ brigade
are there to serve.
If you must say something
A couple of grunts should suffice.’
The day man left his abode in the jungle and proceeded to civilize
himself and to lift himself to higher levels of achievement was the point
when social contacts began to have a special significance for him.
Since then, he started judging himself and continues to strive for the
betterment of his personality.
Your personality sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. It manifests
itself in your taste, fine sense of aesthetics and your way of dealing
with others. The basis for a good personality is a good behavior
pattern: how good you are at making friends, how you handle your
rivals, your class and style, how you conduct yourself at public places
and your inherent charm, decorum and dignity which can quietly affirm
your good upbringing and background.
Making Right Friends
When life was simpler, friends had more in common and found it easier
to be together. Relating to one’s friends today is far more complex.
You are known by the company you keep. So be careful — if you are a
submissive, quiet sort of chap but somehow managed to get friendly with the
rowdy guys of the campus— you will be mistaken for one of them. Always
remember, one good apple among the bad ones ends up getting spoilt itself.
Cultivating Charm
A charming person exudes friendship, warmth, bonhomie and fellowship around him.
Charm is a way of evoking a .positive response from others without having asked for it. It
is this and other endearing qualities that cast their spell upon us when we come into
contact with ‘charming’ individuals. We bask in their company and are drawn towards their
magnetic personalities. What exactly is that indefinable quality that makes some people
more endearing than others? Their poise, elegance, grace or a good sense of humour? These qualities
may no doubt help but they are not essential prerequisites in a charming person. Then, is it physical
charm? Need one be strikingly beautiful or dashingly handsome to be charming? Certainly not. In fact,
many beautiful people are not at all charming. On the other hand, many plain, simple persons can be
disarmingly charming.
Charming people appear to be naturally gifted. But charm can certainly be cultivated. And who wouldn’t
like to cultivate it? It doesn’t take much to cultivate charm. A good knowledge of human behaviour and
a fine sense of dealing with the situations around, is all that goes into it.
Imagine yourself to be a man and that as you were entering the elevator of a bank building, you saw a
lady walking very fast towards it in an effort to get in before the door closed. You kept the button
pressed till she entered the elevator. Inside, while she is trying to regain her composure, her bag falls
down. You pick it tip for her. She asks you to press the eighth floor button. Although you’ve already
done so (since that is where you get off too), you nevertheless press it again. When the elevator stops
at the eighth floor, you allow her to precede you. You both head for the same door. You hold the door
open for her and enter only after she has gone in. Later, you meet her in the waiting lounge where only
one chair is empty. You offer it to her.
From the look on her face, it is evident that she is thoroughly charmed by your behaviour. Long after you leave the bank,
you will leave behind a good impression, causing her to spontaneously murmur: ‘How charming!’.
Class
What exactly is class? Here we are not talking of class as in any school or college. Class
is a highly elusive quality like ‘charm’. It is marked by a quiet stamp of authority, a
binding presence and a bearing that announces your good breeding and refined taste.
Who is said to have class? An executive in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes; intellectuals;
celebrities? Class is much more than the public school syndrome with which it is usually
confused. A good accent, diction, decent clothes, poise, intellect and fame do help, but
do not constitute ‘class’ by themselves.
To determine whether you have class or not, you should ask yourself two questions. Are
you able to carry yourself naturally without an iota of effort; and secondly, is it the
people you meet who talk about your having class or vice-versa? Always remember,
those who are devoid of class continuously remind themselves and others of their
possessing an abundance of it. There are individuals who talk of their most recent trip
abroad to virtually anybody and everybody they meet. They will dwell on the restaurants
and shopping arcades they visited, boast of their top connections, their imported
household goods, etc. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? This obviously is not class. Class is
something which sets you a breed apart. Your modesty, honesty, good manners,
politeness, sincerity towards relationships, genuine concern towards fellow human beings
is more effective than any expensive material trappings to be eligible for that phrase ‘a
class apart’.
Road Sense
You couldn’t eat your breakfast today. You were getting late for an early
appointment. Look, there is a vendor near a red light selling pao-bhaji. But you
can’t stop suddenly like this in the middle of the road disrupting all the traffic
around you. Indicate your intention to stop and then do so by the side of the
road. Now you can buy your pao-bhaji. Stand aside and eat it and let the others like you
take their turn. Do not eat while walking — remember, it’s bad manners.
Your behavior in the car or on the road is very important. If you are driving a vehicle, you
are expected to know and above all follow traffic rules. Don’t wait for the traffic police to
challan you and show you the sign ‘YOU’RE NOT A BULL. DON’T CHARGE WHEN YOU SEE
RED.’
Honking, though not a crime, is as bad as having committed one. So don’t honk
unnecessarily. Also, don’t try to attract a person’s attention by the incessant blowing of
your horn. Chances are, the whole neighborhood, except for him, would be out. What
about him? Well, he would be too ashamed to show his face to anyone, for having such an
ill-mannered friend like you. Don’t drive like a maniac on the road. You may give someone
the fright of his life if, when speeding at 100 km/hr, you brake screeching merely an inch
away from him — only to ask for some directions. He would prefer to send you to the nearest police
station.
Don’t try to overtake another vehicle unless there is sufficient room to do so. First honk, get a clear
signal, and then go.
You must be thinking, what rubbish! These are only traffic rules. But it is not just that. These are all
part of your behavior pattern which, in time, becomes a part of your personality.
Enemies of Etiquette and Manners
We know very well what good manners are and the kind of good behaviour that is
expected of us. But human nature is such that at times everything is shadowed by its one
weakness — anger. Anger: Anger in fact, is a common weakness which blinds you
towards the good and bad, and the right and wrong. Even very civilized, well-behaved
people can be found screaming and lashing out at others using the most obscene of
language. How many times we have heard stories of famous film stars getting involved in
a brawl just like that; or a politician finding himself in a police station, after having given
into his anger. So if you want to save your reputation, keep your temper in check. A very
good anti dose to it is — as soon as you feel your nerves are getting tense, take a deep
breath and count to... well, 10, 20, …100. It depends on the intensity of your anger.
Another good and easy (may not be so at that time) ay out is —- lust turn around and
make a graceful exit.
An apology after a showdown is a must to clear your heart but the best way is to prevent
the showdown itself, while there is still time.
Do’s and Don’ts
Respect your friends and friendship. Be natural in your dealing with others, don’t be a
show-off or pseudo.
Observe good manners even while on the road, like slowing down at zebra crossings,
avoiding puddles so as not to splash passersby, and not parking your vehicle just
anywhere, blocking another’s way.

SLIMMING
Excess weight spils the posture, distorts the facial contours, taxes the health and rapidly ages a
person. Weigh yourself at least once a week and keep a constant check on your weight. Use the same
weighing machine every time to detect small changes in your weight
For effective slimming, the first step is to accept the fact of overweight. Either you eat too much of
everything, or you eat mainly starchy, sugary or fatty foods. With determination and a little will power
you can get rid of those extra pounds.
It is generally noticed that overeating often stems from boredom. If you have nothing to do, you may
feel lonely and to pass time may nibble starchy food all day long. The best way to combat this is to take
up some new hobby or interest. When your mind is busy, there is no time to feel hungry
The correct diet worth following is one which will not only slim you down, but will allow a somewhat
reduced, balanced meal with reduced intake of carbohydrates and fatty foods. When on diet please
don’t cheat. The first two or three days you may feel uneasy after that you’ll stop feeling hungry all the
time. This may be because you are in the habit of eating too much and your stomach is stretched but
as soon as you start on the reducing diet the stomach tends to shrink, with time you’ll need lesser food
to fill it up.
Always gradually enter into a diet to help you stave off the hunger pangs. In addition, you may nibble a
raw carrot between meals only on the first two or three day of the commencement of a diet.
Before embarking on the diet consult the weight chart to
find out if you are really too heavy.

On consultation of the chart if you find that you are over
CALORIES
• A Calorie is a scientific word to indicate a unit of heat, especially in

relation to food values. To keep healthy and active, your body needs
a certain amount of calories every day, which will depend on your
age, height and the type of life that you lead. As per the Reader’s
Digest Book of the Human Body, men with sedentary jobs burn up
2400 calories a day, while labourers and athletes burn up 6,000
calories a day. From this it is clear that exercise and physical activity
greatly influence your calorific requirements. A one mile walk burns
up 80 calories while an hour of swimming burns up anything from
150 to 350 calories.

• For effective dieting, the calorie content of the food you eat
everyday should be low while the calories you burn due exercise
and physical activity should be high.

BEAUTY AND THE PERFECT
AIRHOSTESS
The perfect airhostess knows instinctively that appearance goes a long way in making a perfect success in the chosen
profession. To the perfect Airhostess beauty not only brings admiration and popularity it also gives an inner poise
and confidence that helps enormously in everything she does on board the aircraft and everywhere she accompanies
the aircraft on her flight duty
It takes hard work and lots of will power to look pretty at all times bu it is well worth the effort. Always formulate a
beauty routine and follow the routine regularly and religiously, however pressed for time. Everyday you must
exercise, eat moderately and sensibly take plenty of fresh air, sleep well, drink plenty of fruit juices and water. Next
take great care of your health to look the best and have clear youthful skin, sparkling eyes, shining hair; a good
physique and many beauty assets that only health can bring. Do not allow innate beauty to lie dormant, bring it to
life. Highlight the good points, remedy any fault, and achieve that lovely, well groomed, polish looks that is always a
pleasure to see.
The perfect airhostess must develop and perfect other areas of beauty culture like good grooming, voice control,
etiquette, personal charm, lively animation etc. She must adapt the latest trends in fashion and style to suit her fIgure
and personality She must choose colours wisely, imaginatively. Frequently, her ensemble may appear to be the
height of simplicity, but this is a deceptive simplicity born of inherent good taste, it is the secret of true clegeance. It
is simply a question of interest, patience and good taste that reflects her appeal and complexity.
There is another, somewhat elusive quality which contributes the overall appeal of the beautiful, perfect airhostess, it
is the quality of being delightfully different. She V outstanding because she has cultivated her own brand of
individual beauty She is smart enough to use the flattery of fashion, hair and make up styles to add to her charming
personality. She aim at distinctive looks, unique looks. She simply insists on being herself in the nicest possible way
Add a touch of mystery to this charming personality Smile an enigmatic smile (think of Mona Lisa). Hint at hidden
depths of your charming personality. Let the passenger that beholds you wonder about your charming self.
BEAUTY ROUTING
The first item you will need is a dressing table, which will b the centre of operations for
much of your beauty routine. It is essential for it to be functional, efficient and well
arranged. In addition it is essential to have a large size mirror preferably a full length
mirror to have a complete view of yourself from top to toe. Place the back of the
mirror against the natural light in the room so that all the light falls on your face when
you look into it. Supplement the natural light with a good table lamp or a light on the
wall directly above the mirror.
Keep items in constant use like foundation, powder, lipstick etc. within easy reach,
just to the right of mirror. Items not so frequently used may be kept on the left of the
mirror or in the drawers below. The space directly in front of the mirror should be kept
free for current use and experimentation.
Make your dressing table look as pretty and feminine as possible. Place a fresh rose
in a little vase. These little extra touches will create a delightfully relaxing and creative
atmosphere to work and experiment in luxury and style
Keep a magnifying or cosmetic’ mirror on the dressing table, to magnify the skin
considerably and to view all the tiny blemishes that are magnified. It helps to ensure
that the make-up is flawless and to make one super-conscious of the complexion.
Always carry a small mirror in the handbag onboard the aircraft. So you’ll never be
left wondering if your make-up is still intact or your hair is tidy You can see yourself
well groomed to face the passenger confidently
FACE
• There are four basic face shapes - round, square, long and heart

shaped. In nearly all cultures, the classic conception of the ideal
face shape is the perfectly oval face and it is also considered the
most beautiful, but in real it is different. All shapes of faces can be
made to look beautiful with expert make-up.

• Because the face of the perfect airhostess is always on display and

looked at most by the passengers, it is essential that it is well made
up and that the make- up flatters the facial contours. Ensure too,
that the skin has a natural glow and that the complexion is clear. Let
the hair style flatter the shape of the face. Remember the best asset
to any face is a sweet charming smile. Also remember it is a ‘face
that launched a thousand ships’. Let your face launch a thousand
airlines.
CARE OF TEETH
• Good, sound teeth are essential for health and beauty The teeth are visible
each time you smile and the perfect airhostess is required to smile all the
time on board the aircraft, hence her teeth should be sparklingly white and
shining.

• Make it a point to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Yellowish teeth are

very unattractive, so keep yours bright and shining by regular brushing. Visit
your dentist at least once in six months to detect cavities and decay and
correct in good time.

• Sugar, both in food and drink, spells disaster for the teeth. If in the habit of
chewing gum, stop immediately, or cut down and switch over to sugarless
gum. Cracked teeth should be filed down to prevent further damage. If the
teeth are stained due to chewing paan, smoking or drinking tea, find the
cause and remedy. If the stains persist or discolouration is substantial,
consult your dentist for cleaning and polishing the teeth.
BAD BREATH
•

Bad breath is everyone’s nightmare. If you are wondering why your friends are
avoiding you or elbowing you out of their parties, the reason niay be bad breath, and
if you don’t act fast you may find yourslf at the bottom of the popularity ladder, having
disastrous consequences in the profession of the perfect airhostess. The cause f bad
breath may be stomach disorder (constipation) or gum related disease.

•

Adjust your diet to include more roughage which leaves residues like seeds, skins of
fruits, vegetable etc. Bleeding gums are often due to deficiency in vitamin ‘C’. Drink
lots of orange or lime juice or take vitamin ‘C’ tablets. Gently massage the gum
everyday to stimulate the gum tissues. If the gum are spongy or inflamed, or if they
bleed while brushing the teeth, consult your dentist.

•

For the perfect airhostess, bad breath is like a nightmare. Always keep your breath
sweet and fresh. Take good care of the teeth and gum by regular brushing. Take
plenty of water and fruit juices. Gargle the mouth regularly with mouth fresheners.
POSTURE
•

Posture is fundamental to a healthy living and defines the way we walk, sit, stand,
work and move. Holding the body in unnatural positions besides being unhealthy is
definitely harmful. Poor posture leads to faulty coordination, grotesque movement and
fatigue. Always walk, with your head held high, pushed up from the back of the neck,
not from the chin. Let the shoulders be down and lift your ribs, pull in your tummy
Check that your steps are smooth, never jerky. Try to move your legs right from the
hip and place your weight evenly on each foot. At home when you are free, practice
walking gracefully (as described above) to the sound of music.

•

Throughout the duration of the flight the perfect hostess moves gracefully and swiftly,
up and down the aisle, with a tray in her hands, laden with glasses of water,
softdrinks, fruit juices and beverages. Even on long haul sectors the perfect hostess
is on her feet for most of the hours of the flight. Yet it is a pleasure to watch her
graceful movements and service to the passengers along the length of the aisle. It is
a picture of elegance.

•

Practice good posture even when you sit and stand. Always sit comfortably with the
body relaxed, but with the back and shoulders straight. When you stand, stand erect,
but not stiffly. Keep the legs close together. Always spend some time to check and
cotrect bad posture.
COSMETIC TEST
• Hair and skin arc visible part of the human body as far as beauty is

concerned and extra precaution should be taken before use of any
cosmetics or hair dyes and colours. Never use cheap cosmetics but
use good branded cosmetics for which the FDA has issued
manufacturing licences under the drugs and cosmetics act.

• For any cosmetic or hair colour or dye that you use, whether

branded or not, initially do a patch test. For cosmetics, use the
product on the inside of the wrist and only if there is no allergic
reactions should you go ahead and use that cosmetic. For hair
colours and dyes, simply apply a little sample on the scalp behind
the ear, leave it on for 24 hours and check for allergy, irritation etc.
•

HAIR CARE

For the Perfect Airhostess, her hair is her crowning glory. To compliment the good
looks, hair should be stylish, causally dressed and well groomed. Lovely hairs make a
lot of difference to the appearance and enhances the overall beauty and appeal of the
Perfect Airhostess. To be beautiful the hair must be healthy and depends on the
general health and well being of the person.

•

Hairs should be kept clean and glossy with a bounce that make it an extension of the
living body. Pollution, stress, heat and dust, and over use of heated styling
appliances, all contribute to diminish the lustrous looks, to make up and keep hair
healthy and clean shampoo every day with a mild shampoo and condition.

•

For silky and glossy looks brush your hairs daily. It is an excellent stimulant for the
scalp. Even if you wish to wear your hair long, trim it every month to prevent ends
from splitting and uneven growth. For short hair style, regular cutting and shaping by
a good hair dresser is essential. Oil your hair moderately to replace loss of natural
oils due regular wash. Sometimes try hot oil treatment of the hairs by applying hot oil
to the scalp by sectioning the hair. The cuticles of the hair open up when in contact
with the heated oil, this allows deep penetration of oil into the hair shaft,
strengthening, repairing and giving increased shine and bounce. A light massage of
the scalp is recommended as it simultaneously softens and promotes blood
circulation so that the hair regains its vitality

•

If you suffer from temporary hair loss due to illness, do not worry as your health
improves, the condition will correct itself. Meanwhile take plenty of milk, fresh fruits in
your diet. Supplement your diet with a course of vitamin ‘A’ tablets and massage your
scalp with oil (as above). If you suffer from hair loss (due Alopecia) consult a skin
specialist immediately. HANDS, LEGS AND UNDER ARMS SHOULD BE KEPT
FREE OF HAIR.

Choose your shampoo

For Normal hair: Use a mild shampoo with less detergent in it. Use of hard shampoos( contain lot of detergent
which produces lather ) destroys hair moisture and it loses its shine and becomes dull and dry and are prone to
greying.
Oily hair: A lemon shampoo is ideal for oily hair as they tend to get dirty very quickly and need to be shampooed
frequently. Lemon shampoo removes grease from the hair. By using ordinary shampoo for oily hair, the particles
of dirt do not get washed away easily, as a result hair looks grimy and unhealthy and starts greying prematurely.
People with oily hair should avoid fried and spicy food.
Dry hair: For dry hair use egg shampoo, cream shampoo or tonic shampoo. Never use the wrong kind of
shampoo for dry hair. One of the factors for hair becoming grey prematurely is its dryness.

Conditioner
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

Conditioner: A conditioner must be used for all types of hair. The regular use of shampoo without conditioner
makes hair dry as a result of which it loses its natural sheen as well as moisture. Conditioners play a major role in
maintaining the the correct level of moisture in hair.
You can choose from home made conditioners or those available in the market.
Ordinary hair: For ordinary hair beat 3 eggs and mix in 2 small spoons of olive oil and 1 small spoon of vinegar.
Apply this paste on your hair properly, keep it for half an hour, and then shampoo. Use this conditioner once a
month.
Oily hair: For oily hair, squeeze the juice of a lemon and put in 1 spoon of vinegar in a cup of water. Apply it all
over your hair after a shampoo when the hair is still wet. Massage your scalp with your fingertips for 5 minutes.
Then wash it off with clean water. Use this conditioner once a week.
For oily hair, a lemon or the white of an egg is a very good conditioner. It should be used on wet hair for 5 minutes
and then washed off with water.
Dry hair: For dry hair use one spoon olive oil and mix it well into the yellow yolk of the egg. Shampoo and wash
your hair, put this conditioner on the wet hair and massage for 5 minutes. Then wash your hair off with clean
water. Use this conditioner once a week only.
If you don't want to use egg for your hair, you may substitute with curds. Shampoo your hair after applying curds
on it and keeping it on for 2 hour

Hair Cut
Hair Cut: To find out which hair cut suits you best first find out the shape of your face.
Stand in front of a mirror and brush your hair back and secure it with a band and
outline the contours of your face on the mirror with the help of a marker pen or
lipstick, then decide on a hair style that best suits you and enhances your features.
Square Face: For a square face with a straight hairline and a square jawline, the hair
style should make your face appear longer, try asymmetrical hairstyles and those
which lift hair back from the forehead and then fall around the cheeks and the jaws.
Round Face: For a round face ,try having short layers on the top or diagonal fringes
which take your attention away from the circular lines of the face and keep them
narrow on the sides. A short blunt cut will also look good.
Oblong Face: For a oblong face , you need a style that makes your face appear
shorter and wider. Try a style with rounded crown on the top and fuller sides.
Heart Shaped Face: If your forehead is wide and your chin is narrow, you need a
style that disquises the width if your forehead. Try a hair-do with a central parting and
fringes coming over the forehead.
Diamond Shaped Face: If you have a narrow forehead and wide cheekbones and
again a narrow jawline, the you need a hairstyle to conceal the width of your
cheekbones. Keep your hair higher and wider towards the temples and makes it look
wider and keep them narrow and away from the chin.
Pear Shaped Face: If your forehead is narrow but your jawline is wider, try a hair style
that has soft fringes or layers that add height to your face.
Oval Shaped Face: An oval shape is the best, any style looks good on it.

Never use a comb on wet hair.
Avoid using others' comb, towel and pillow.
Clean the comb once a week.
Avoid brushing your hair vigorously and forcefully.
Untangle your hair by starting from the free end and then moving up.

bristles should have rounded ends.

washing your hair for conditioning.

COSMETIC MODELLING
•

Nothing short of plastic surgery can actually change your features, you can do a lot to improve
your feature through ‘cosmetic modelling’
Cosmetic modelling is more an art, which requires lot of practice to master the basic skills. Once
mastered, there is no feature that can’t be improved through cosmetic modelling. The modelling
is done with two shades of foundation-one light, and one darker. Use the light foundation to
enlarge or bring forward, and the dark foundation to make smaller or recede. Use the darker
foundation over the lighter one, blending the edges well so that no dividing line is detectable.
There is a long list of improvements possible with cosmetic modelling, a sample is mentioned for
example.
- Bring a receding chin forward with light foundation.
- Shorten a long chin with a strip of dark on the end.
- Straighten a crooked nose by darkening the bridge.
- Shorten the length of a long nose by darkening the tip.
- A large nose may seem less so by using dark foundation.
- A short nose may be made to appear longer by putting a strip of light foundation down the
centre of the nose.
- It can lighten deep eye sockets.
- Fill out hollow cheeks with light.

FACE POWDER: For a smooth matt look, choose the face powder in exactly the same shade
as your foundation. For a more translucent look, choose it in one- only one- shade lighter than
the foundation.
Appl’ the powder with a smooth powder puff, pressing firmly from throat to brow. Brush off
surplus with a fluffy powder puff. Finally, brush off powder from eyebrows and Lashes.
MASSAGE
By the end of the day, work and physical activity cause an accumulation of toxins in the body,
that could result in body aches and a general sluggish demeanor. A good massage, properly
done by a skilled massuese would help to keep the muscles well toned up and can pep you up. It
circulates the blood and thus artificially stimulates the flushing out of body toxins.
REMOVING MAKE - UP
• However pressed for time make it a habit to remove make up before

going to bed. However tired you may be, do not give way to
laziness, but make it a habit, just as the teeth is brushed at night,
spend at least two minutes every night to remove all make up before
retiring for the night.

• Simple soap and water may nut be sufficient to remove all traces of

make-up. Soaps may also be harsh on the skin and leave it dry and
dehydrated. The area around the eyes is particularly delicate and
requires an eye make-up remover that thoroughly yet gently remove
all traces of eye make-up. It is best to use a gentle eve make-up
remover with damp cotton wool, on the eyelids and eyelashes, with
out rubbing. For the rest of the face use a gentle cleansing face
wash that leaves you perfectly clean and refreshed, and your skin
feels soft and smooth and appears refreshed.

The PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT INTRODUCTION • Ifwe examine the root of the word personality ("persona") we discover it means "mask." So the origin of the term suggests the early philosopher-psychologists believed the real self was hidden beneath the mask of personality. What is Personality • Personality is a mixture of various physical, cultural and other values and does not merely mean appearance. Appearance is just one of the facets of the personality and does not constitute the entire persona.
  • 3.
Foundation/Pillars of Personality: Four main pillars of personality. I. General Disposition. This includes person’s intelligence, aptitude, smartness, quickness, alertness, ready-wit, presence of mind amongst others. II. Speech includes communication that would impress the other person. It is powerful means of communication and is a basic tool to relate to other individual. Speech includes content. III.General Behaviour. It is the third important foundation which should be neither over nor below the acceptable or decent norms. The expression should be sincere not exuding artificiality. The way a person stands, shakes hands, sits down and performs small acts like smiling ,nodding, waving, refusing, acknowledging, all go to build up this behaviour line. IV. The fourth pillar of personality is contained in looks which is a extension of personality. Looks do not mean overt good looks or handsome/pretty face but looks which exude geniality amicable disposition, warmth and camaraderie.
  • 4.
    • All theseof course needs to be harmonized with inner personality of good character and attributes. Pure moral character supported by unblemished acts that keep away from temptations of life. The authencity of soul will find reflection on the face which would glow with beauty . This natural truth is more impressive than any conscious effort to express one’s values. • Two fold action to advance one’s personality ,first of these consist of positive actions or DO’s. One has to improve himself learn, acquire, practice and do all positive things to master the art of cultured existence. • Second of the acts would refer to negative actions that is don’ts meaning the actions which should not be indulged in to preserve one’s personality. • One should try to behave naturally and act truthfully with himself & others whatever is the experience of the world. The inference should be positive and the position winning for ex., one should be clever in dealing with the cunning & scheming but avoid adopting their ways and tarnish or belittle oneself. This should not stand in the way of building up one’s goodwill. Be your natural self and enhance your natural response. This will impressively add to your personality .
  • 5.
    • One shouldavoid giving boost to one’s personality. • Prevent one’s character or personality to degenerate. • Avoid excess of any kind ; moderation in character & behavior is therefore the sum total of personality. • The sum total emerges from shape & sound emerging from small and big acts . Consider the picture of a gentleman whose countenance is shining with inner glow emanating from education & culture. His behavior is affable & amiable ,he neither submits nor surrenders ,his talk is easy & unhurting , but his views are strong, acceptable and not to be swayed.
  • 6.
Improvement prospects • Moderncivilization provides means and opportunities for improvement in personality ,while looks are in fact secondary, good taste in clothes, and other forms of grooming will make one’s personality stand out in crowd . • Certain Professions which are personality oriented like Air Hostess, Public relation Officers, sales & marketing personnel, TV newsreader/Anchor, DJ’s etc., are required to train themselves not only in their profession but in public dealing. All these vocations may differ but one common factor stands out i.e., to improve their general get up, behavior talks etc. • Important Factors. Will and Determination to improve oneself .One may start from scratch but set himself objectives. Just as five year plan.
  • 7.
How- Define yourgoal and objectives . Realistic. Concrete and specific. Verifiable, you can tell when you are done. Significant and rewardable. Relevant to your priorities.

I am a powerful learner. I am relaxed alert & ready to learn. There is nothing I can’t learn & master. I have a genius potential. Every day in every way I get better & better.
  • 11.
YOUR PERSONALITY DISCIPLINE YOURSELF: • Discipline is not doing extraordinary things but doing ordinary things extraordinarily well through proper actions. Action is of two kinds- without direction and absolute direction. What is discipline? It is a force, which marshals our inner force and saves us from possible disasters in which the undisciplined often find themselves. Discipline has advantages. It enables you to cultivate steadfastness. You do not permit your mind to sidetrack important matters. It enables you to go on with your work until it is completed. In other words, with discipline you save yourself from dithering. You remain composed. Adversity cannot push you this way or that. You are not at the mercy of your nerves and do not rush from one chore to another- all poorly done.
  • 12.
Without discipline youcannot experience enjoying the serenity which stems from a job well done. Achievement does not come from feverish attempts. It comes from disciplined action. Begin by doing things of 'trivial‘ significance. Take something that you have been shirking for long, whether it is a certain area of mathematics, which you don't find interesting, or payment of a bill or a visit to a friend. By using will power, you overcome. To strengthen your will power, select a small project rather than a big one. If you say "this week I am going to write one essay", you are likely to accomplish this task. But if you say, "today I am going to finish this book“ the chances are that, you will not. When you finish one job do not relax. Instead allow yourself another reasonable task, which enables you to proceed at a steady pace. A break in steady and disciplined effort pushes you away from long range goal. Go on adding one link to another which forms an unbreakable chain.
  • 13.
When you comeinto a task, prepare yourself as thoroughly as you can if you have to write an essay, it is better if you keep your side the reference matter. This ensures concentration, and you have no excuse for leaving the work incomplete. Do not be overawed by obstacles. Instead, look upon each step as a definite move towards the ultimate goal. Then look back and you will be thrilled to see a string of small success behind you. These inspire you to more efforts. They strengthen your sense of discipline. You have results to your credit. Be on guard against your so-called friends. They will tell you that you are gaining nothing from your efforts. In such circumstances, remind your self of your tangible success. Bad suggestions have a banal influence. Counter them. Your effort to cultivate self-discipline go waste if you do not master the art of dealing with time wasters. They are chronophages. Every successful person has either cultivated or adopted a way of life to keep time wasters out of his life. Einstein says " have to work now", and excuses himself from the time-wasting scene. It is important to have a reasonable, workable plan of work, and a rational spur to it. Hurry is an evidence of inner stress. There is time and ways for action and reflection. Don't 'escape‘ from time. Fill every bit of it with positive action. This is the core and crux of discipline.

WIN OVER WORRIES& FEARS Though our country got independence more than forty-five years ago, yet most of our people are still suffering from serious ailments of poverty and affiliated afflictions, all because of the corrupt leaders and selfish politicians on the whole. While Net Subhash Chandra Bose used to say: "In a society, where there will be no inequality of wealth, each individual will have equal opportunity for education and advancement; in a society, where labour and work shall get full respect and there will be no place for idlers and lazy people; which will be free from foreign influence and interference, I dream of such a State. This dream is eternal truth for me, for the dignity of this truth everything can be done, all can be given up, all kinds of sufferings may be endured; to make this meaningful, even to sacrifice our life is to attain heaven."

Worries and fearsof any kind are the most evil enemies of self-confidence. These have to be won over not only for the betterment of the nation, but also for your individual success. In Sanskrit, there is a quotation: As is the Universe, so is our body and similar is the case of the nations. The philosophers and great thinkers of even the western world ruled about the advancement of their own countries, as the system completely eroded nobility, humanity and virtuosity of their masses. But our leaders consider otherwise!

In so far as the country's affairs are concerned, the picture is very dismal, let us therefore turn to our own personal matters. According to many great thinkers, it is entirely up to us as to whether we want to be happy or worried; it is wholly of our own choosing. Abraham Lincoln, one of the great Presidents of the U.S.A., stated in one of his lectures that people are as much happy as they want to be. And conversely they are certainly as much worried as they desire. But the question who wants to be in worries, pains and suffering? Is this not a dilemma? All the same the selection is in your hands!

In this context,Indian hero Kishore kumar, who has since expired, used always sing songs cheerfully. Someone once asked him - "What was the secret of his being so cheerful?" Kishore Kumar replied - "there is nothing secret in my being cheerful all the while. This is an obvious as your nose is on your face. When I get up in the morning, there are two things before me and I have to choose from amongst these. I make selection of remaining happy and cheerful and that is all to it. There was a couple; the husband was a professor and his wife was just a housewife. But the habits of both of them were entirely different; the professor husband always remained cheerful, while his wife was most of the time miserable, feigning some trouble or worry all the while. When a newcomer came to their house, the professor introducing his wife used to say that she is the owner of a factory. And when the newcomer asked about the production of her factory, the professor would say that troubles, worries ad pains were produced in his wife's factory! Many of us are the sort of people who own, such factories and mostly remain sad or sorrowful for no rhyme or reason!

In Hindi, thereis a proverb • The world is according to your view. So we must change our outlook as bet as possible in order to enjoy our everyday life. The best remedy of removing the ailments of worry is to keep yourself so much busy that you may have time to think and get tired so that you may be able to do only almost essential, viz., taking food etc., and a few hours to sleep! • During the Second World War when Hitler had let loose all the destruction and fury over England, the Prime Minister, Mr.Winston Churchill, was surrounded from all sides with problems, he had to work eighteen hours day underground, he was asked by someone as to how he was able to discharge his immense responsibilities that must have kept him worried, Churchill's reply was - "I have very little time already; where is the time for worries?" Hence the simple rule is that we must always keep our mind busy on good and constructive ideas, ever thinking of today.
  • 19.
    • Because lifeexists today; yesterday is gone already and tomorrow never comes. Some Sanskrit poet has written: • What is past is past and that which is to come is not certain. Therefore, man should do that which pertains to the present. • Mahakavi Kalidas has described the importance of present day in glorious terms - In his immortal poem, he states that we must welcome dawn, because life belongs to our present day and is the sum-total of all. All realities are hidden in our present day, as yesterday is gone and tomorrow is only a dream. In today is hidden all the boons, the significance of work and development and the secret of success. Enjoy it while working for the good of all; never allow this to pass without adding luster to life as whole. Because if it is gone, it is gone for ever!
  • 20.
    • Our latePrime Minister LalBahadur Shastri was quite small in size; hence once a correspondent asked him that it must be matter of worry to him. But shastriji's reply was: • Nanak says - Remain small like the tiny grass; all great ones have fallen, but the small grass remains happily when a storm rages on the earth. Even remain polite and you will be loved and respected. Besides that which cannot be cured, must be endured happily with cheer. Compromise with what is true and bow down like the tiny grass, otherwise if you show erectness like a tree when the wind blows with fury, you are going to break down. • It is stated :If there is some remedy for the ills, find it out immediately. But if you cannot find any remedy, then why keep on worrying for nothing.
  • 21.
    • The bestremedy for fears and worries is to pray and keep on doing your duties most sincerely, honestly and truthfully. You must have faith in His will and accept by adapting yourself to the adverse circumstances, if you feel you are surrounded by some. Never give up but think of a way out and leave off worrying. Because if you keep on fearing the worst, you are likely to feel depressed. On the other hand, if you deliberately shake these off from your mind and be bold to face the worst, preparing yourself mentally and physically, you ware bound to feel comfortable! Only rare people are able to understand the riddle of life. • In Sanskrit, it is stated Like a wheel, the good and bad days go on turning, as day follows night, so night is followed by day. After pain, you feel more joy in pleasure, as stated:
  • 22.
    • After pitchdarkness, like the sigh of light, similarly after experiencing sufferings, pleasure is more enjoyable. One who is facing troubles becomes poor, such a person though alive bodily, is considered like a dead one. • So, even in troubles and sufferings we must thank God that we have endured our sins' results, And now the good days are bound to come, which we can enjoy keeping our head erect.

RECOGNISE YOUR ABILITIES •When a young man scans most of the advertisements, he feels discouraged because experience of some years is required. Therefore, he begins to feel short of the necessary requirement and does not dare to apply for the job for which he knows full and he is quite suitable to. In case he has the requisite confidence in himself, he should go ahead and apply for the job, stating that the experience is bound to come as and when he is employed and his skill is assessed. • And in case he is called for an interview, he should not feel scared, but on the contrary, he must try his best to stand tall, not only physically, but also mentally and spiritually, seeking God Almighty's guidance all the while. Of course, he must do his best applying all his ability and skill in the job and deserve his selection over those who were experienced, more so by showing his initiative and the imagination, that may prove to the employers that a young man with vision is far better than an experienced hand, who has fallen in some routine expertise!
  • 24.
    • Even achild when learns to walk uses some confidence in self and, of course, by and by he begins to walk. Why this natural phenomenon is not taken cognizance by the employers insisting all the while on experience? I am certain any person who wants a really good employee should like to have a young man with initiative and drive, rather than one who wants to leave his previous job. But both have their own merits and demerits. But we must try to assess our own abilities and potentials. as to my mind there is nothing that one cannot learn, if he is keen and desirous. And certainly these qualities matter a lot, besides education, knowledge and understanding of the job in question. • You must be seeing your face in the mirror many times a day and feel pleased with the personality you have. But personality in the real sense in revealed the moment you speak, more so by your day-to-day behaviour and conduct in life. But the total personality your possess consists in your inner qualities, more than your external physical appearance. So, you must feel pleased and satisfied with your inner self about which many times even you are not aware of, if you do not care to be introspective and a hard task-master.
  • 25.
    • However, onething is certain that you possess a great potential and can easily become great, if you begin to learn more about yourself and with determination and self-confidence acquire the abilities which directly attract your attention. What is most essential is, never feel shy in learning and in the long run you are bound to be happy with your achievements. Confidence comes by doing the work, which in turn is called experience; so experience is nothing but hard work and those who have initiative can actually do and repeatedly perform such work through imagination and even create the likely hurdles and solve them. • What matters most is hard work and in so far as the salary is concerned, it is bound to come in the process itself. I know a young man, one of my friends, who is a qualified engineer, but is jobless, despite the fact that he got some work and worked there for about two years, but subsequently retrenched. Thereafter he got another job, which he himself left as he considered that his employers were not giving him due regard to his status. Now for quite some time he is jobless, and has come to me for help and advice. One must prove his worth, so that his employers may begin to feel his presence, in that he should make his position inevitable, as if he is a necessary part of the machinery without which the organization cannot function smoothly.
  • 26.
    • Work islife according to our Vedic philosophy. And when we have to work why not do it in the best manner possible? In the 40th Chapter of Yajur Veda as also in Ishopanishad, we have been advised: Aspire Oh Man! To live through virtuous and noble deeds for a hundred years, in peace with all. Thus alone, and not otherwise, will thy deeds not influence thee. Doing your duty for the sake of duty and most efficiently that may have the stamp of your individuality on it should be your aim in life. • In Sanskrit, there is a quotation: One who does not recognize his own self, knows nothing. Hence please concentrate on your own abilities and never try to belittle them when the time to put them into action presents in your life. This is also self-assessment and certainly you have immense powers, but you do not know these. • In Rig-Veda it is stated, a man who does not work but remains idle, is an enemy of the society. But in our country many people do not find any work to do, either physical or mental, because of the wrong system of education and the wrong policies of the Government. Otherwise our country has so much to do, while, on the other hand, so much of manpower is going waste. What a pity?
  • 27.
    • Oh Man!do your work yourself and enjoy its rewards. We must have the ability to work hard, thereby keeping ourselves self-reliant and strong, as a Sanskrit poet has written: Oh Youngman! Labour so hard with your body that you may get so much perspired and your sweat may begin to run like water. Even intelligent persons who keep busy on mental exercises, must do some physical work to keep healthy and fit. • Ability comes by doing the work and it is much better to start from the lowest rung of the ladder and ultimately reach the top, rather than sit at the top and then feel frustration! In such cases, I would advise people to utilize their intellect and imagination, by initiating such other activities in the organization that may prove helpful, not only to the institution, but to the country as a whole. • In this connection, the story of how a lion cub got somehow mixed up in the herd of jackals and began behaving like them is relevant. But after sometime when he saw his image in the water, he realized his own self and the abilities and the prowess that he possessed and began to roar like a lion.

ENJOY YOURSELF WHILEYOU GROW : • A good sense of humour may well be called as the sixth essential . A total want of it may be as good an affliction as the absence of any other five essential senses. Hippocrates recognized four main "humours" ( phlegm, blood, choler and black bile) in the human body. These were also called " streams" or "currents" . If all the four "streams" flowed normally, one was said to be in good humour. • Humour has been defined variously by various people but everybody agrees that its physical manifestation is a smile or laughter. Kant said that the cause of laughter was "the sudden transformation of a tense expectation into nothing. Henri Bergson says it is "the feeling of relief." With humour, we can establish a congenial atmosphere for ourselves as well as others who come in contact with us. This helps greatly in times of stress and enables us to come out of many a crisis unscarred.
  • 29.
    • We cando ourselves a lot of good if we remember that except in case of stark tragedy there is always a humorous side to every aspect of life. Humour also serves as a kind of ego booster. A tale about people can be told to show that they are ignorant and thus assure us of our own superiority, if the superiority is just a supposed one, then the comic effect is higher still. It takes a lot of large heartedness for a person to be able to laugh at his own self. When a person realizes that the joke is on him and even then enjoys it, laughs at it, be considered a beneficiary of humour. • The fact is that life is too serious to be taken seriously, unless we can develop the lighter side of our natures, the tragedy of life will overwhelm us. The flippant are to balance grief. Laughter is needed to atone for tears. A sense of humour prevents a man from inflating himself with an absurd dignity. It saves him from being laughed at. It enables him to be a man among men . The man who conceives of himself as an idol has few worshippers.
  • 30.
    • "Laugh andthe world laughs with you; weep, and you alone. weep" No one would pay to see the most dignified man in the world, but people pay hundreds of millions to see comedians. ln the handling of audiences, every effective speaker has found that by the use of humour a crowd of people can be welded into a unit. An audience, too, can be "heated". It must be relaxed and warmed into sympathy with the speaker by his wit and humour. A cold audience sits critical and unconvinced. People are brightened up. They begin to give attrition. They forget their suspicions. They cease being on their guard. • Their natures are changed as much as the nature of iron is when it is made red-hot. Man is said to be the crown of creation for he is widowed with several faculties which distinguish him from the lower species. One such faculty is his ability to laugh. A smiling nature increases our strength. It also adds to our efficiency. A man who "sings" at his work accomplishes more in the same time and does it better than the sony-head. • A sense of humour acts like a wine in social life. It increases warmth and lubricates our relationship with other human beings. Thus, it enriches social life. "There is nothing like fun, is there? We need all the counter-weights we can muster to balance sad relations of life. God has made sunny spots in the hearts; why should we exclude the light from them?" asks Haliburton. THE CHEERFUL MAN IS A KING.

THE ART OFLEARNING • There is a quotation - "A Learned person learns from his experiences, but a more learned one learns from others' experiences." All the inventions and discoveries have been made through practical experiments. What is the use of such a knowledge or education which is written in books but not utilized. The Chinese saint Confucius says - "Man should not only wander in search of knowledge, but should try to utilize the same in life." • Mahatma Gandhi has written - "Whatever portion of knowledge, filled in the minds of men, is utilized has its value; the rest is nothing but useless burden. "Hence the value of learning in our practical life is so visible that all the people feel wonder at such noble people and consider it a miracle, because of the penance and hardship entailed in their practice. Hence we should keep an ideal in mind and learn the method of practicing the same.
  • 32.
    • The valueof physical work is much less as compared to the mental or intellectual. Hence try to learn and find out new fields and pastures that have remained untraversed so far. We should always increase our mental faculties, In Rig Veda, we have been told: Whatever objective a man thinks in his mind and works in that direction, he is able to achieve the same. • It is aid that the three foundations of learning are: (1) seeing much, (2) suffering much, and (3) studying much. While as a student, most of our knowledge comes through listening, as we advance in age, we can devise various other methods to make education interesting experience.
  • 33.
    • Just asa child is curious to learn more and more about as many things as possible, it is a human trait and we must be curious to learn in detail going into the depth of all what we want to study. We can always keep this trait in mind and utilize it for better purpose, making our learning interesting at the same time. This idea if practiced daily can even become exhilarating and as a result you will feel happy at the end of the day. Because of the simple fact that your have not undertaken this as a task or work, but as a play and this mood should give you pleasure, instead of being tired. But I would like to caution you here that even play or game has become 'work' for those who have taken this seriously and earn money thereby as is happening in today' world. What an irony of the situation in that physical games, e.g., boxing, lawn tennis, cricket, etc., are more paying job than any other work, excepting the tinsel world actors. But they also play as actors and actresses for people to enjoy. • How far they themselves enjoy, is difficult to surmise! • The question is how to make the process of learning so interesting that a student may naturally feel attracted towards it? Generally, most of the students consider it a burden, so tedious a responsibility as has been said in a Hindi proverb.
  • 34.
    • According tomost of the students, it is unpleasant and boring as also a distasteful imposition from outside; they do not put their heart and soul in their work, thus ending with a second or third division. • Manu Maharaj writes in his famous book Manu-Smriti: The more persistently, perseveringly and regularly a person studies a subject, the more he will be ale to understand its basic concepts, and that which appeared to be tough to follow in the beginning will become quite interesting. Some Hindi poet has also written: • With constant practice, even a dull-witted person becomes an expert. Practice makes a man perfect. Hence if a student works hard and continues to do so regularly without break, he is bound to succeed in his mission. There can be no two opinions on this point. If you learn the hard way and overcome the difficulties with courage, you will relish your work all the more and are not likely to forget easily what you have learnt.
  • 35.
    • Even otherwisewhatever is learnt and memorized as a child, is not likely to be forgotten. Experience tells us that childhood memories become our life-long partners. Nowadays 'learn while you play' methods are being devised, particularly for small children who grasp the fundamentals of their subject without being conscious of it. For grown-up children, lessons on different subjects are given on television. This makers the task of learning easy and interesting, because even ten thousand spoken words cannot make such a great impact on the mind as one visual scene. • Indeed it is one of the greatest lessons of life that the burdens we carry by necessity or by choice, instead of weighing us down can actually lift us up in life. Certainly the students who have to accept the burden of learning, because there is no escape from it, why not change your attitude towards the burden and sing your way through life, thus making it not only acceptable but interesting and pleasant? Your learning will actually lift you up ultimately and will make your life purposeful, like the burdensome wings of the birds that become attached to their backs, enabling them to fly. Your learning and education will certainly lift you up in life!

Communication With YourBoss • Communication with your boss is one of the most important things you will ever have to do at work. It may not be listed on your duty statement, but we all know that if we cannot establish good on-going communications with our manager then chances are that our work life will not be as rewarding as it should be. In fact, work could turn out to be a real disappointment. • Whilst good communication requires co-operation of both parties, sometimes it falls upon the employee to initiate an improvement. What follows is a list of practical tips that will help you improve your communication with your boss and hopefully make your work life a lot more enjoyable and procedure.
  • 37.
    • Good communicationare frequent. If you and your boss are not communicating on a regular basis chances are that misunderstanding and mistakes will emerge. It’s in your interest, therefore, to try to set up regular meetings with your boss where important issues and expectations are classified. These meetings do not have to be long or official. They just have to be regular. • Make sure your boss delegates work clearly. One of the most common sources of communication problems is employees misunderstanding what their bosses expect of them. Often this happens because boss is too busy to take the time to explain things properly. Next time your boss gives your work be sure he/she provides you enough detail so you know exactly what’s expected of you. Be sure that you clarify by issues such as deadlines, quality of work, money & resources to be used. Running good meetings it is important that your meetings are run in a way in which everyone gets a fair say and that people are encouraged to disagree in an open and constructive way. If your boss, or other individuals, are dominating meetings and / or intimidating people you may wish, when time is appropriate, to raise this issue in the spirit of improved communications. If you do this, be sure you avoid making negative or inflammatory remarks. For example, instead of saying “ I don’t think you are doing a good job running our meetings,” you could say “I think I know of way in which we can get more out of our meetings.”
  • 38.
    • Avoid lettingproblems fester inside of you. It’s generally much healthier to bring problems out in the open before they are acknowledged and work & on. Good communications are open about their work related issues. The key is to avoid saying things in a way that management unnecessarily promote people. Using “I” statements can be very helpful here. For example, instead of saying “ I can’t stand the way you talk to me,” you can say, “ Every time you raise your voice at me, I feel threatened. Then I can’t do my work properly. Can we talk about getting to a solution?” • Be very aware of your body language. Research shows that we communicate much more via our body language than we think. It’s self defeating to use positive verbal language if your body language is negative. Negative body language usually comes from feeling bad so, try to stay positive. • Remember that your boss will immediately pick up your negativity via your body language. Good communications possess the discipline to overcome their immediate emotions for the longer term good.

There’s Only allpicture You on Fantasy One ourselves Everyone wants a better personality. We Island, where the ringing of the mission bells transforms us into articulate, attractively attired aristocrats. We no longer trip, fumble, spill, or grope; we converse, captivate, charm, and inspire. When the show is over, we switch off our mind-set and resume our test pattern of life. As we stare at cur blank screens, we wonder why our “situation comedy” was canceled; why we’ve been replaced by the new stars who play their roles with confidence; why we seem to be cast as misfits. We rush off to personality courses that promise to transform us into sparkling wits within twenty-four hours; self-evaluation experiences that will make us into minigods with maxi-power; or sensitivity sessions, where we will feel our way into a fantastic future. We o expecting miracles and come home disappointed. We don’t fit the mold of the exciting person, bursting with potential, pictured as the norm. we have different drives, abilities, and personalities-and we can’t be treated as the same.

No Two Alike Ifwe were all identical eggs in a carton, a giant mother hen could warm us up and turn us into slick chicks or loving roosters overnight; but we are all different. We were all born with our own set of strengths and weaknesses, and no magic formula works wonders for all us. Until we recognize our uniqueness, we can’t understand how people can sit in the same seminar with the same speaker for the same amount of time and all achieve different degrees of success. Personality Plus looks at each one of us as an individual blend of the four basic temperaments and encourages us to get acquainted with the real me underneath before trying to change what shows in the surface.
  • 41.
It’s What’s UnderneathThat Counts When Michelangelo was ready to carve the status of David, he spent a long time in selecting the marble, for he knew the quality of the raw material would determine the beauty of the finished product. He knew he could change the shape of the stone, but he couldn’t transform the basic ingredient. Every masterpiece he made was unique, for even if he had wanted to, he would not have been able to find a duplicate piece of marble. Even if he cut a block from the same quarry, it wouldn’t have been exactly the same. Similar, yes, but not the same.
  • 42.
Each One ofUs Is Unique We started out with a combination of ingredients that made us different from our brothers and our sisters. Over the years people have chiseled on us, chipped, hammered, sanded, and buffed. Just when we thought we were finished products, someone would start shaping us up again. Occasionally we’d enjoy a day in the park, when everyone who passed by admired us and stroked us, but at other times we were ridiculed, analyzed, or ignored. We were all born with our own temperament trails, our raw material. Our own kind of rock. Some of us are granite, some marble, some alabaster, some sandstone. Our type of rock doesn’t change, but our shapes can be altered. So it is with our personalities. We start with our own set of inborn traits. Some of our qualities are beautiful with strains of gold. Some are Blemished with fault lines of gray. Our circumstances, IQ, nationality, economics, environment, and parental influence can mold our personalities,
  • 43.
My temperament isreal me; my personality is the dress I put on over me. I can look in the mirror in the morning and see a plain face, straight hair, and a bulgy body. That’s the real me. Gratefully, within an hour I can apply makeup to create a colorful face; I can plug in the curling iron to fluff up my hair; and I can put on a flattering dress to camouflage too many curves. I’ve taken the real mc and dressed it up, but I haven’t permanently changed what’s underneath. If only we could understand ourselves: Know what we’re made of Know who we really arc Know why we react as we do Know our strengths and how to amplify them Know our weaknesses and how to overcome them
  • 44.
We can! PersonalityPlus will show us how to examine ourselves, how to polish up our strengths, and how to chip away our weaknesses. When we know who we are and why we act the way we do, we can begin to understand our inner selves, improve our personalities, and learn to get along with others. We are not going to try to imitate someone else, put on a brighter dress or new tie, or cry over the kind of stone we’re made from. We’re going to do the very best we can with the raw material available. In recent years manufacturers have found ways to duplicate some of the classic statues, and in any large gift store you may find dozens of Davids, walls of Washingtons, lines of Lincolns, replicas of Reagan, and clones of Cleopatra. Imitations abound, but there’s only one you.
  • 45.
Where Do WeStart? How many of you have a Michelangelo complex? How many of you look at other people as raw material, ready to be carved up by your expert hand? How many of you can think of at least one person whom you could really shape up if only he’d listen to your words of wisdom? How anxious is he to hear from you? If it were possible to remake other people, my husband, Fred, and I would be perfect, for we set out to chip away at each other right from the beginning. I knew that if he’d loosen up and have fun, we could have a good marriage: but he wanted me to straighten up and get organized. On our honeymoon I found out Fred and I didn’t even agree on eating grapes!
  • 46.
I always enjoyedplunking a whole bunch of cold, green grapes beside me and plucking off whichever one appealed to me. Until I married Fred, I didn’t know there were “Grape Rules.” I didn’t know each simple pleasure in life had a so-called right way. Fred first brought up the Grape Rule as I was sitting on the patio outside our cottage at Cambridge Beaches in Bermuda, looking out to sea and absentmindedly pulling grapes off a large bunch, I didn’t realize Fred was analyzing my unsystematic eating of the fruit until he asked, ‘Do you like grapes?” ‘Oh, I love grapes!” Then I assume you’d like to know how to eat them correctly?” On that I snapped out of my romantic reveries and asked a question that subsequently became a part of a regular routine: “What did I do wrong?” ‘‘It not that you’re doing it wrong: you’re just not doing it right.’’ I couldn’t see that there was much of a difference, but 1 phrased it his way.
  • 47.
“Anyone knows thatto eat grapes properly, you cut off a little bunch at a time, like this.” Fred pulled out his nail clippers and snipped off a small cluster of grapes, which he set before me. As he stood smugly staring down at me, I asked, “Does this make them taste better?” “It’s not for taste. It’s so the large bunch will keep its looks longer. The way you eat them—just grabbing grapes here and there—leaves the bunch a wreck. Look at what you’ve done to it! See all those tiny bare stems, sticking up all over the place? They ruin the shape of the whole bunch.” I glanced around the secluded patio to see if there was some hidden group of grape judges waiting to enter my bunch in a contest, but seeing none, I said, “Who cares?” I had not yet learned that “Who cares?” was not a statement to make to Fred, because it caused him to turn red and sigh with hopelessness, “1 care, and that should be enough.”

Appearance Looks and personalityare two separate lines, meaning that one may not be so much dependent on the other. A person who is not originally a good looker, may, all the same, have a strong personality. Conversely, a handsome or beautiful person may not be having any personality to speak of. Nonetheless, appearance can be improved upon, and this will, to a great extent, enhance the overall personality of a person. A person may be welldressed and may be chronically quite the opposite of it. To wear neat and clean dresses and look well-groomed is a matter of habit, and if one makes it a habit, it would become one’s second nature. To better one’s appearance, dressing up properly should be one’s duty. A person who wears well-pressed and clean clothes, and is bathed, cleaned and shaved etc. will give out a pleasant feeling in others, irrespective of that person’s status or rank.
  • 49.
A person, whois well-dressed, need not be over-dressed or expensively dressed but he can look good and would also send the signal of various other messages about him to others. The first of these is that irrespective of his economic situation, he is managing his affairs well, to present a moderately good and acceptable picture of himself to the outside world. Just imagine meeting a person or an old acquaintance who is clean and neat in appearance with hair cut and proper in place, shoed shining and clothes fresh and pressed, and while talking he takes out of his pocket an unblemished handkerchief, you will at once conclude that this acquaintance of yours, is not doing badly, even if not doing more-than-well. There is no doubt that in the society there are all kinds of people, that is, those who are rich and those who are not so. But there is an acceptable social standard which will make a person of moderate personality likeable by all. One’s primary duty therefore is to make oneself with a presentable personality.

In the matterof dresses, matching of clothes is an essential choice, a discretion or taste which requires to be cultivated. A part of this taste, this selection of clothes, is inborn and comes with the family background and status of a person. But much of this taste for clothes can be developed through training, mixing and adequate liaison with society. If one keeps one’s eyes and observation open, one is apt to see, well-dressed persons, in parties, functions, even on the streets and markets. A person, who wants to improve in this direction, will easily pick up the clues. It is a wrong notion to believe that only expensive clothes will improve one’s personality. There is no doubt that expensive clothes do draw attention, but there are occasions for wearing such clothes. If in a simple occasion one wears heavy and expensive dresses then one becomes prominent from negative angle. Matching of clothes depend on various situations, like the weather, that is, cold, hot raining season, spring. Also, there are ceremonies like marriage, parties, official and informal get-together, picnics, outings, and other occasions, and for all these occasions, there should be different sets of clothes.
  • 51.
Further, clothes areto suit one’s personality, complexion, figure, disposition, status and so on. The president of company has to dress in one way, the manager in another manner, down to other staff. Airlines have their own dresses. Some factories distinguishes their factory personnel from office staff by two sets of uniforms. This method is followed to maintain office propriety, meaning, everybody would be suitably dressed, neither overdressed nor under-dressed. Not only the complexion or figure of a person, wearing a certain type of dress, but also the disposition of he person is to be taken into account . If a person is of cheerful and jovial disposition, then colourful or even gorgeous outfits could suit him. But f he or she is of grave and silent type then sober clothes would bring out better sides of such person’s personality. lnner culture of a person comes out on his face and oozes out of his nature. His c countenance and personality acquire sheen and shine with a radiance. This Is the proverbial glow of culture while one cannot much change one’s physical appearance, one can acquire better culture, more education and appreciable social behaviour. As one acquires more culture which may come out of meeting and mixing with more people socially, in business or otherwise, one may gradually come out of one’s shell, one may widen one’s outlook, expand one’s vision, and get more integrated with one’s people, crossing all distinctions of caste, creed, religion and other diversities.

When we speakof appearance, therefore, we can not limit ourselves to our appearance of the body or figure. But our appearance would be a sum-total of our attributes of which our looks form only a part. Still, physical appearance, itself can be bettered, if a person is ready to improve It with expert advice. There is the whole set of beautification literature which caters mainly for boosting up female beauty. The business sector of cosmetics and garments, among other accessories, through the medium of striking models fashion parades, etc, seeks to capture the consumer’s preferences. These competitive activities, apart from supplying beauty-aids to the people open up their mental acumen for higher personal attainments in looks and actions.
  • 53.
A direction fromsuch literature mentions that bold men should cut there hair close to their heads. That would render them more presentable and would also make some bold men quite handsome in their own way. Similarly women have been seen to enhance their looks through varying their hair style or even cutting their long hair shorter, and so on. On a person’s personality or disposition, an English author has written that a gentleman is gentle with people who are gentle, strong with those who are strong, rude with those who behave rudely, and so on and so forth. Thus, a gentleman varies his actions according to persons, places and events, and it is this variability in his nature that makes him invariable in his dealings with others. Thus, he maintains his balance in all situations. He does whatever he is called upon to do, that is, to be soft, firm, gentle, angry, rude, etc. He looks bending, but is in fact unbending. Contrary to popular belief, a gentleman is not always polite or accommodating but would rise to the occasion to behave to get for him the justice and dignity that he deserves. The different postures that would bring out one’s personality to one’s best advantage has already been referred to and discussed. Avoiding repetition, it may be mentioned that that appearance includes a person’s gait, walking, sitting, standing, and other postures, Because talking of looks, a person’s looks are reflected from different angles. Hence, a person has to look Pleasing not only when he is sitting, but also when he is standing
  • 54.
In a mans nature including a woman s’traite there may be superiority or Inferiority complexes, which could do much damage to his or her personality. Both these complexes are bad for the development of one’s personality. A superiority complex may grow because of looks, educational or other achievements, from riches, family background, among others. The same aforementioned causes may lead to an inferiority complex. A person may feel inferior because of a number of reasons. One main reason might be that he has not achieved much. Another reason could be that he had not been able to do what he wanted to do. When a person is able to do what he wanted to do which could mean that he wanted to be a famous singer, an actor, a high-class bureaucrat, a businessman, among others, there could hardly be any gap in his personality. If the gaps in his wishes are fulfilled, then a man’s ego or his nature’s complex may remain at a level. Hence, when there is suppression of wishes either through circumstances or though other causes, a man may not be normal to himself. He may feel inferior, or to suppress that complex he may adopt a superior stance and may try to pinpoint his other achievements. Work and sincere effort can get a man out of this rut of complexes in his nature, which would stand in the way of his full normal activities. Since, these complexes are mental affairs; their pressures would diminish with constructive and fruitful work and its continuity.

POSTURE It is bearing, disposition, demeanour and poise that determine the pattern of our lives. A man may stand erect or stoop, he may sit smartly or lazily, he may speak nicely and soothingly or crudely — these and their variations are all part of good manners. A good posture indicates your good upbringing and the poised human body is one that ought to look as nature meant it to do so — upright, straight and beautiful. It is in the poised and healthy body that the poised and healthy mind is mast often found. Sitting Pretty Anyone and everyone always sits down but graceful sitting begins with the manner in which you approach your chair. The first thing to bear in mind is that the act of sitting down should be done quietly. You should not plonk yourself down on a chair or scramble for a seat. Deliberate controlled movements are needed.
  • 56.
Hands: While sittingdown, hands are particularly important. It is your hands that pose a problem, if you do not know what to do with them. Your nervousness may be apparent from the tremor through your hands. You should therefore learn how to place your hands properly either on the hands of the chair, or on your lap, or else they will get in your way and look very ungainly. Hands that are relaxed give you an aura of serenity and poise. Avoid jerky movements. Legs: Legs also play an important role in your self-composure, poise and confidence. Do not shake or jerk your legs constantly. Besides being an unwelcome distraction to others, they look indecent. The cardinal rule for a lady when she sits is to keep her knees together. Talking while sitting: When carrying on a conversation while sitting, you should be careful that your body movements are well synchronized so that they project a good personality. These movements become an aid to your posture. Smiles, acknowledgments, nods and so on should be combined with all these.
  • 60.
Standing : Standingis sometimes more difficult than sitting. One reason is that it causes more strain. There are various modes of standing(a) Standing straight with your hands hanging loosely at the sides. (b) With your feet a little apart and your hands clasped behind you this is termed standing at ease. (c) Slight stooping or bowing as a mark of respect. (d) Some people prefer standing with their hands on their hips. This is the worst form of standing and indicates that the person has no manners at all. It not only shows disrespect to others but also portrays an indifferent aggressive attitude. (e) If you are dealing with a V.I.P., it would be better to adopt a posture of alertness instead of one of laid-back serenity. Talking while standing: When you are holding a conversation with another person and both are standing, your attention should not be diverted. But if you are sitting when an other person strikes up a conversation, you should get up immediately and talk to him. You should not let your attention be diverted elsewhere. The only exception to the rule is if you are the host and have the responsibility of welcoming and seeing to the convenience of your guests, it is permissible for you to allow your attention to wander while in conversation.

Good Posture Habits Byteaching your child good posture habits, you have not only saved his health but a lot of future embarrassment as well. Sitting with a straight back, standing with ease and walking with the head held high arc the basics of a good posture. Posture is very closely associated with one’s nature. If you sit erect, use your hands properly and know how to manage your legs while sitting in a group, you portray an image of a confident and composed person. Fumbling with your things unnecessarily, shaking your legs, touching your nose, ears or hair, and playing with your fingers — these give you away by demonstrating your nervousness. Correct your child whenever you find him stooping. Stop him firmly if he is getting into the habit of shaking his legs while in conversation. Teach him how to walk and sit gracefully. You can make him understand the importance of a good posture by showing him two different persons with good and bad posture habits respectively. The difference is so obvious that it will not be difficult to explain the importance of good posture to him.
  • 64.
Impatience : Enemyof Good Posture Have you ever noticed that person pacing up and down the floor, scratching his ear, poking his nose, cracking his fingers, or looking at his watch every 10 seconds? What did you say? “He is in a big hurry.” For what? No Sir, he is only waiting for a table in this restaurant, for which the manager has already told him that it would take 10 minutes. He is just a very impatient man. And this is revealed in his posture habits. He forgets all the basics of good posture as this devil of a habit – impatience – takes over. So be warned, even if you are an impatient kind of person, hide it tactfully and maintain your poise and charm. Remember, a delay of a few minutes will not cause havoc in your life. The sky will still be there when you look up five minutes later.
  • 65.
Do’s and Don’ts Keepyour back and head straight and don’t stoop. Talk without shifting around in your chair. Sit with knees close together— never wide apart. Don’t take up more space than required. Avoid making unnecessary and flamboyant gestures. Don’t sit too close to the persons on either side of you. If walking in a crowd, try keeping pace with others — don’t lag behind or stride ahead. Don’t stop suddenly — others will walk into you. If walking with a lady, walk on the outer side somewhat protectively. Don’t walk too fast so that she has to run keep pace with you.

DRESS—CODEthe fairer sex.) (Thischapter may be skipped by men as it focuses on Dress to suit your figure, face and personality. Clothing — no matter how artfully designed, how perfectly made, how fashionably styled— must always be judged on the basis of its relationship to the wearer. When selecting clothes and accessories, you must have a complete understanding of yourself, your figure, face and personality — this will help you achieve distinction and personal attractiveness. Costly the raiment as thy purse can afford, Rich but not gaudy... For apparel oft proclaims the man.” — Shakespeare
  • 67.
Good taste maybe defined as a refined look, leaning more towards the conservative and simple than a flamboyant spectacular. Remember these points. Avoid offensively revealing clothes. Never be ostentatious or over ornamented. Avoid fancy jewelry for day-time wear. Do not follow fashion blindly. Make sure you are neat and clean.
  • 68.
    • • • Simplicity and GoodTaste Status symbols have never had more power than they have today. Titan watches, Action shoes, Big Joe’s T-shirts, Kala Mandir sarees, City Look sweaters and Weekender shirts are taking over. But do not panic, if you cannot afford them. It is still possible to look good without investing so much in either your apparel or accessories. It is preferable to carry a good though small leather purse than to carry an ostentatious, flashy and more expensive one from Cottage Emporiurn. A well-stitched reasonably priced salwar suit is much more appealing than a tightly fitting gaudy outfit from an expensive shop. Natural fibers such as cotton, wool and silk are not only stylish but are also classic fibers that are acceptable in any place. • Select a good quality material and have it stitched by reliable tailor. • Flatter your figure and skin: A critical self-analysis is essential for you to get fully acquainted with your own body structure. Slim figures: A slim, perfectly proportioned figure will have no problem with clothes. It is the overweight or too-thin that that must be careful. • Plump figures: Those overweight should avoid horizontal lines, pleats, ribbing and tucking, contrasting colours, accentuating belts, yokes, etc. Instead they should go in for vertical lines, stripes, button front-closing from neck to hem. • Thin figures: The too-thin girl must wear garments that add to her figure giving an illusion of fullness.
  • 69.
Colours As far ascolours go, let us put them into the divisions given above. • Plump girls: Overweight girls/women should go in for staple colours of black, navy brown, or dark grey. Deep reds, dark toned greens, low-keyed purples also suit her. She should avoid shocking pink, fire-engine red, brilliant whites. The overweight should definitely avoid spotted prints, shiny finish and go in for small, patterned prints in muted colour combinations. • Thin girls: A thin girl on the other hand can wear staple colours but in heavier textures and contrasting lines that will seem to fill her out. A petite girl should never wear large or widely spaced prints. Fitting In Smoothness is the key to a good fit— not so tight that they wrinkle everywhere and not so loose that they hang. A sai’warsuit or a midi looks best when properly fitted. Most women have this misconception that they need only two or three blouses in basic colours to go with all their sarees. They also do not give much importance to the fitting of the blouse. An unmatched badly fitted blouse or an ankle- length petticoat mars the beauty of even the most expensive saree.
  • 70.
Colour Blending Colour blendingis a very important boost to one’s personality. If you are fair, all colours will suit you, especially pastel colours such as pale pink, blue, lemon, beige, cream, light green etc. For a whitish and dark complexion, slightly dark colours are used. Colour combination is an important aspect of dressing. Most women go wrong by using one blouse (usually black) with all the sarees. If you can spend a bundle on a saree, why not make it look more presentable by investing onetenth of its cost in accessories? Men too should be careful about their colour combinations. Oranges, pinks, yellows, reds and greens are considered ladies’ colours. Men should avoid them. Their best colours are grey, beige, blue and shades of these colour families. Although age groups used to matter earlier, these days all colours are worn by people despite their age group. A few years back, it was believed that dull grey shades, all light colors and various shades of cream belonged to the older generation, whereas all bright colors were meant for young people. However, with changing Limes, these rules have undergone a tremendous change. Today, if you buy a pink saree with a navy blue border for your mother, she will not give it to your wife, saying it’s not her age to wear such Colours. Instead, she will wear it quite happily.
  • 71.
However, there isno denying that sober colours do belong to the upper age group (say, above 40), as they indicate their maturity and bright and gaudy colours and dresses adapt well with young ones and children who are full of youth and bubbling with energy. Thus, their brightness and freshness matches best with the bright colours. Children, however, can wear any colour. But their best bet is bright colours, since childhood represents freedom from all worries and troubles, a carefree attitude, and so do these colours. Accessories Purses: A purse is a major accessory for women and should be bought keeping in mind your requirements. A leather purse always looks better than that of foam leather. There are different purses for different occasions and purposes. If, for example, you have a baby and you need to carry his water bottle and a few other things in your bag, a clutch purse will not serve the purpose. It is better in such a case to buy a large leather bag, spacious enough to hold all these things. Keep the small beaded clutch purse for social evenings. A smart medium-sized bag with a shoulder strap should he kept for going to office. Do not overload your bag. It is never considered good manners if you spend half an hour searching for your hanky scattering your belongings all over the place. A bulging bag is very inelegant.
  • 73.
Shoes: Buy shoesto go with your outfit rather than buying them at random and impulsively and then trying to make them match your clothes. If you cannot afford-many pairs, shoes in the three basic colours of black, brown, and maroon will do. Though high heels arc very fashionable, do not go in for them unless you are confident and comfortable in stilettos. If your toes are pinched and feet cramped in tight-fitting shoes, the agony will be reflected on your face, besides making you irritable and snappy. If you are uncomfortable with the height of your heels, you will be unduly concerned about maintaining your balance and normal gait. Handkerchief: A hanky should always be part of a person’s wardrobe. Delicate lace-edged handkerchiefs for women and fullsized white ones with thin stripes for men should be used. They should be spotless, neatly ironed and changed daily. Remember even a little thing like a hanky goes a long way in building your personality and image.
  • 74.
Jewelry: Avoid thetendency to bedeck yourself with loads of jewelry in an effort to show off what you have. For college students, small studs in the ears or small rings, or a single bangle are sufficient. If you don’t want to wear gold, the market is full of chunky, inexpensive jewelry ideal for the college student. Keep the gold for weddings and other special occasions. Match your jewelry with your outfit, keeping the occasion in mind. You cannot wear junk stuff with a Kanjeevaram saree to a wedding. If you are going for a formal party or a reception, a gold set (earrings, chain, bangles, ring — all with the same design) may be worn. Precious stones embedded in gold look elegant when worn with a saree of the same hue. Diamonds and pearls go with everything. Grooming: Needless to say that a well-dressed person falls short of the mark if he/she has not paid attention to personal grooming. Deodorants/ antiperspirants are a must in our hot climate. Do not drench yourself in perfume or after—shave. Spray on just enough so that a pleasant smell emanates from you. You need not go in for imported perfumes. A dash of rose water in your bath will do the trick. The indigenous ittars are as good as any imported perfume.
  • 75.
The Appropriate Dress Wedress for various occasions — attending office, a wedding, dance, party, or just an informal get-together with old friends. Clothes reflect the aspirations and psyche of the wearer. Just as a heavily embroidered saree on a picnic would be totally inappropriate, so would minis or jeans be frowned upon if worn by a girl when she meets her prospective in-laws or husband-to-be for the first time. The same bright red outfit which looked stunning at a party will be a total misfit at a funeral. A nicely starched ktirtapyjaina will look out of place at a business meeting where every other man present is dressed in a suit. Likewise, the same clothes you prefer to wear to office will not do for a formal garden party. For example, you have recently got married and your husband is happy to escort you around in clothes of you own choice, be it jeans, skirts, etc. But it would be insensitive of you to wear the same clothes when he takes you to meet his old, conservative grandfather for the first time. A saree or even a modest salwar-kameez would be most suited in this instance. In the same way, your husband should not insist on wearing his cut-off jeans or shorts when your relatives come visiting. This reminds me of an instance. A friend of mine, soon after completing her MA, got a job as a lecturer in a college. She did not give much consideration to what she wore on her first day at college and ended up wearing the first available garment she found — a skirt. The moment she entered the gates, she was accosted by a group of seniors who on mistaking her for a fresher began ragging her. Her protests fell on deaf ears and they thought she was fooling them by saying she was a lecturer. Later, when the truth came out, she was the laughing stock of the whole campus.

Dresses for Children Compared to their elders, children have a wider variety of clothes to choose from. While boys can wear a pant-shirt or kurta-pyjarna combination for nonformal occasions, and a coat-pant, shervani or safari for formal affairs, girls can have their pick from a range of lovely frocks to suit every occasion. They can also wear a lehanga-chunri to weddings. Girls have the advantage over boys as they can even wear pants or shorts. When choosing clothes for children, keep in mind their convenience and comfort. A silk shervani for your son in May or a thin cotton dress for your daughter in December will not do. Avoid dressing very small babies and infants in expensive silks and too many frills or flounces.

YOUR BEHAVIOUR ‘You’re betterthan anyone else. Forget about learning to be polite. You don’t need to be polite. You have a divine right. The ‘Thank you’ and ‘You are welcome’ brigade are there to serve. If you must say something A couple of grunts should suffice.’

The day manleft his abode in the jungle and proceeded to civilize himself and to lift himself to higher levels of achievement was the point when social contacts began to have a special significance for him. Since then, he started judging himself and continues to strive for the betterment of his personality. Your personality sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. It manifests itself in your taste, fine sense of aesthetics and your way of dealing with others. The basis for a good personality is a good behavior pattern: how good you are at making friends, how you handle your rivals, your class and style, how you conduct yourself at public places and your inherent charm, decorum and dignity which can quietly affirm your good upbringing and background. Making Right Friends When life was simpler, friends had more in common and found it easier to be together. Relating to one’s friends today is far more complex. You are known by the company you keep. So be careful — if you are a submissive, quiet sort of chap but somehow managed to get friendly with the rowdy guys of the campus— you will be mistaken for one of them. Always remember, one good apple among the bad ones ends up getting spoilt itself.

Cultivating Charm A charmingperson exudes friendship, warmth, bonhomie and fellowship around him. Charm is a way of evoking a .positive response from others without having asked for it. It is this and other endearing qualities that cast their spell upon us when we come into contact with ‘charming’ individuals. We bask in their company and are drawn towards their magnetic personalities. What exactly is that indefinable quality that makes some people more endearing than others? Their poise, elegance, grace or a good sense of humour? These qualities may no doubt help but they are not essential prerequisites in a charming person. Then, is it physical charm? Need one be strikingly beautiful or dashingly handsome to be charming? Certainly not. In fact, many beautiful people are not at all charming. On the other hand, many plain, simple persons can be disarmingly charming. Charming people appear to be naturally gifted. But charm can certainly be cultivated. And who wouldn’t like to cultivate it? It doesn’t take much to cultivate charm. A good knowledge of human behaviour and a fine sense of dealing with the situations around, is all that goes into it. Imagine yourself to be a man and that as you were entering the elevator of a bank building, you saw a lady walking very fast towards it in an effort to get in before the door closed. You kept the button pressed till she entered the elevator. Inside, while she is trying to regain her composure, her bag falls down. You pick it tip for her. She asks you to press the eighth floor button. Although you’ve already done so (since that is where you get off too), you nevertheless press it again. When the elevator stops at the eighth floor, you allow her to precede you. You both head for the same door. You hold the door open for her and enter only after she has gone in. Later, you meet her in the waiting lounge where only one chair is empty. You offer it to her. From the look on her face, it is evident that she is thoroughly charmed by your behaviour. Long after you leave the bank, you will leave behind a good impression, causing her to spontaneously murmur: ‘How charming!’.

Class What exactly isclass? Here we are not talking of class as in any school or college. Class is a highly elusive quality like ‘charm’. It is marked by a quiet stamp of authority, a binding presence and a bearing that announces your good breeding and refined taste. Who is said to have class? An executive in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes; intellectuals; celebrities? Class is much more than the public school syndrome with which it is usually confused. A good accent, diction, decent clothes, poise, intellect and fame do help, but do not constitute ‘class’ by themselves. To determine whether you have class or not, you should ask yourself two questions. Are you able to carry yourself naturally without an iota of effort; and secondly, is it the people you meet who talk about your having class or vice-versa? Always remember, those who are devoid of class continuously remind themselves and others of their possessing an abundance of it. There are individuals who talk of their most recent trip abroad to virtually anybody and everybody they meet. They will dwell on the restaurants and shopping arcades they visited, boast of their top connections, their imported household goods, etc. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? This obviously is not class. Class is something which sets you a breed apart. Your modesty, honesty, good manners, politeness, sincerity towards relationships, genuine concern towards fellow human beings is more effective than any expensive material trappings to be eligible for that phrase ‘a class apart’.

Road Sense You couldn’teat your breakfast today. You were getting late for an early appointment. Look, there is a vendor near a red light selling pao-bhaji. But you can’t stop suddenly like this in the middle of the road disrupting all the traffic around you. Indicate your intention to stop and then do so by the side of the road. Now you can buy your pao-bhaji. Stand aside and eat it and let the others like you take their turn. Do not eat while walking — remember, it’s bad manners. Your behavior in the car or on the road is very important. If you are driving a vehicle, you are expected to know and above all follow traffic rules. Don’t wait for the traffic police to challan you and show you the sign ‘YOU’RE NOT A BULL. DON’T CHARGE WHEN YOU SEE RED.’ Honking, though not a crime, is as bad as having committed one. So don’t honk unnecessarily. Also, don’t try to attract a person’s attention by the incessant blowing of your horn. Chances are, the whole neighborhood, except for him, would be out. What about him? Well, he would be too ashamed to show his face to anyone, for having such an ill-mannered friend like you. Don’t drive like a maniac on the road. You may give someone the fright of his life if, when speeding at 100 km/hr, you brake screeching merely an inch away from him — only to ask for some directions. He would prefer to send you to the nearest police station. Don’t try to overtake another vehicle unless there is sufficient room to do so. First honk, get a clear signal, and then go. You must be thinking, what rubbish! These are only traffic rules. But it is not just that. These are all part of your behavior pattern which, in time, becomes a part of your personality.

Enemies of Etiquetteand Manners We know very well what good manners are and the kind of good behaviour that is expected of us. But human nature is such that at times everything is shadowed by its one weakness — anger. Anger: Anger in fact, is a common weakness which blinds you towards the good and bad, and the right and wrong. Even very civilized, well-behaved people can be found screaming and lashing out at others using the most obscene of language. How many times we have heard stories of famous film stars getting involved in a brawl just like that; or a politician finding himself in a police station, after having given into his anger. So if you want to save your reputation, keep your temper in check. A very good anti dose to it is — as soon as you feel your nerves are getting tense, take a deep breath and count to... well, 10, 20, …100. It depends on the intensity of your anger. Another good and easy (may not be so at that time) ay out is —- lust turn around and make a graceful exit. An apology after a showdown is a must to clear your heart but the best way is to prevent the showdown itself, while there is still time. Do’s and Don’ts Respect your friends and friendship. Be natural in your dealing with others, don’t be a show-off or pseudo. Observe good manners even while on the road, like slowing down at zebra crossings, avoiding puddles so as not to splash passersby, and not parking your vehicle just anywhere, blocking another’s way.
