5.  Hematocrit Blood separation
 Measures the percentage of volume of
packed red cells in a volume of whole
blood.

6.  As you know our blood is made up of
two portions
 Liquid portion : Called Plasma
 Solid portion : contains RBc, WBc and platelets

7.  Hematocrit is the proportion of pure red
blood cells in whole blood.
 Hematocrit meaning is to separate RBC.
 Hematocrit tests measures the only red
blood cell mass in whole blood.
 Both hemoglobin and hematocrit values
are compare together to assess a wide
variety of hematological disorder

8.  This parameter is used to diagnose,
› Polycythemia.
› Anemia.
› Leukemia etc
 HCT parameter is used to monitor blood
loss
 HCT is also used to monitor treatment of
Anemia.

9.  Normal range in adult men PCV is: 44-51%.
If PCV is less than 44% in male condition is called
Anemia. If more than 51% in male condition is
called
Polycythemia .
 Normal range in adult women PCV is: 38-48%.
If PCV is less than 38% in female condition is
called anemia and if more than 48% in female
condition is called polycythemia.

10.  Collect 3 to 5 ml blood in EDTA
tube.
 Test will b performed by using
an automated cell counter or
Wintrob’s method or micro
method by using 75 mm
capillary tub and a Micro
HEMATOCRIT centrifuge.
