Motherhood is known for its high level of responsibility, the changes it makes to a woman s body,
the toll it has on the mother s sleep schedule, and the formation of a tight bond between mother and
child. Due to those reasons and countless others, some professionals in the world of sport question
whether or not a woman can find a balance between the demand of being an elite athlete and the
fulltime job that comes with being a parent. The research on this topic is somewhat limited, but I
am confident that the sources used in this paper are good quality. I have compiled qualitative data
from four separate scholarly papers and two news articles. My best evidence came from one case
study conducted by Heidi Vollstadt Freeman (2008), which analyzes interviews with eight different
mothers during their post partum return to training for the Olympics. My key findings included a
trend of the athletes compartmentalizing/separating their home life from their sport life and the
importance of a strong support system. The bottom line is, while struggles were apparent regarding
what the demand of training and competing took from home life (lack of time and energy after
intense training sessions and financial/organizational travel obstacles), the mothers found that their
new family life helped keep them motivated, increased their enjoyment for the sport, eased

than was originally included in the constitution. Some may argue that large government is
helpful, because a large government provides services for its citizens through many different

1.1 Introduction
Niger Delta is Located in Southeast of Nigeria and has a history of being one of the most fertile
land in Northern Nigeria. There is subsistence farming and fishing in this region that is mainly
done by the natives of this place, and is inhibited by 3000 communities that have settled there for
a long time doing farming as their major economic activities (Ikelegbe, 2013). The estimated
population at the Niger Delta is 27 million people, of this population, 75% of the population
relies upon agricultural activities for living. However, the water, air, forest and soil resources have
been devastated because of the exploration of gas and oil resources. The key issue and problem
associated with the oil recourse exploration is oil spills and gas flares.

During the 1940 s Jewish Europeans experienced an unthinkable and atrocious collective trauma. In
her work Survivor Parents and Their Children taken from the anthology Generations of the
Holocaust, Judith S. Kestenberg has argued that regardless of location, the effects of the Holocaust
are felt on survivors parenting. The children of survivors receive a secondary traumatic impact by
being forced to deal with the impact the Holocaust had directly on their parents. The novel Briar

People can either have the ability to say it could have been me, it was me, also and at the same
time that it was not me or the line between the witness and the listener can be blurred and the
historical trauma interiorized. Hirsch identifies a negative identification with trauma as idiopathic
or self sameness (408). An over identification with trauma causes the witness to act out and become
a victim. As Hirsch writes, Acting out is based on tragic identification and the continuation of one s
self as a surrogate victim. It is based on over identification and repetition. Keeping the wounds open,
it results in retraumatization (414).
It is because of these reasons that painful histories must be carefully passed on with the witness s
welfare in mind. Anyone who hears a first hand account about the Holocaust may experience
trauma. According to Judith S. Kestenberg, author of Survivor Parents and Their Children, first
hand witnessing of the Holocaust has long term traumatic effects that are passed down through
generation. As shown through out the studies and cases discussed in the anthology Generations of
