3. Introduction
● Pavapuri is a siddh kshetra and kalyanak kshetra
● It is also known as Apapapuri - meaning a town without sins
● Located in the Nalanda district, Bihar
● Highly revered temple where Lord Mahavira attained nirvana and
Gautaum Swami attained keval gyana in 528 B.C.
● Pavapuri has 5 Shwetambar temples including the samovasaran
temple, jal mandir,....and 7 Digambar temples
4. Samovasaran
● Many times samovasaran were built in Pavapuri
● In many of his chathurmaas,last one was also at Apapa
● He gave 48 hour (16 prahar) long uninterrupted sermons - which
is complied as The Uttaradhyayan Sutra
● Chaturvidh Sangh was present - 18 Lachivi kings were present
● Dev and animals were also present

raise a kshan (time) of his ayush
karma,otherwise bashma raashi
will combine with his janma
nakshatra - swati
● Ayush karma cannot be altered
even by Tirthankars - Bhagwan

17. Gautam Swami’s Vilap and Keval
Gyana
● Knowing his nirvan kaal near - as Gautam swami was very
much attached , fond of bhagwan, he sent Gautam swami
to a nearby village to give preachings to a layman - Dev
Sharma
● On his way back, Gautam swami saw all the surroundings
gloomy, birds and animals weeping, people wailing that they
have lost their “Nath”
● Gautam swami was in total shock and sorrow,he
uncontrollably started weeping , lamenting, saying -” O’
Veer , you knew this was going to happen, why did you
send me away, would i have come with you like a
child,would i have asked share in your moksh, why you left
me alone .. O ‘ Veer?” ……wailing uncontrollably
veer,,,,veer,,veer,,The V word stopped in his mind.
18. Gautam Swami’s Vilap
and Keval Gyana
● V gave him the word Vithraag
● He started contemplating that bhagwan
was vithraagi - no attachment
● He was the one who was having
attachment
● Contemplating on the anyathva bhaav -
Got detached from inside , destroyed
Ghati karma, obtained omniscence
19. Nirvana and Diwali Celebration
● As bhagwan attained nirvana at Apapa - people
started calling it “Pavapuri” - city of sins - as it took
away their beloved Bhagwan Mahavir
● It was the night of Karthick Amavasya, so was
pitch dark and the light of pure knowledge of
Bhagwan has also vanished forever
● So , people lit dravya deepak to show their
reverence towards bhagwan
● The night was also illuminated by the dev and
devis presence
● So “Diwali” celebration pratha started
20. Pavapuri - Jal Mandir
● After bhagwan’s cremation, it is said that
people and dev took away ashes and
soil from the place of nirvana which
formed a huge pit
● When it rained , it filled with water and
became a pond - a pond of red lotus
● Bhagwan Mahavir’s brother ,
Nandivardhan built a temple here
dedicating to Bhagwan Mahavir
● It is made of pristine white marble - has
charan padukas of Bhagwan Mahavir
● In the sides , charan padukas of Gautam
swami and Sudharma swami are also
found
