Theodore Dalrymple, a former prison psychiatrist, argues that Britain has descended into unstoppable vulgarity and lack of self-control. He believes liberal 1960s social theories have damaged society by promoting the idea that nothing is wrong and society is to blame. This has led to zero self-control and a "brutality of the dependency culture". Now, mass drunkenness and vulgarity are routine across all of British society, as downward aspiration has become the norm.
The document discusses conformity versus reforming old ways of thinking. It encourages breaking from social norms if needed to find one's own path, but to do so with sensitivity to others. Gender roles are reluctantly changing from a male-dominated world to one with more equality. It also discusses how conformity for products can be unhealthy and how technology is advancing quickly without understanding consequences. It promotes evolving awareness and the highest choices over old ways that did not work. Ultimately it advocates for a revolution of love beginning within each person.
Theodore Kaplin is a hardened 40-year-old detective and war veteran for the LAPD who has become cynical over the years. He believes in justice but sees much corruption. He is pushing himself to solve a string of brutal murders in LA while battling alcoholism. A vigilante called "Dahlia" also seeks justice, but through extreme violence. Little is known about him except he has military training and detective skills. He is mistakenly believed to be the real "Dahlia Killer." The real killer's motives may be linked to the drug Euphoria formerly produced by the shadowy Elysian Company, which is still circulating illegally and fueling crime. The document discusses several films that accurately portray mental health issues:
The Skeleton Twins depicts twins dealing with depression and reunited after a suicide attempt. Inside Out explores the emotions of a young girl dealing with her family's move through anthropomorphized emotions. Ordinary People tackles PTSD, survivor's guilt, and the stigma around seeking psychiatric help following the accidental death of a son. A Beautiful Mind captures how schizophrenia affected the real life mathematician John Nash's life and career. Silver Linings Playbook shows the emotional rollercoaster of bipolar disorder and two characters helping each other cope.
The documentary Super Size Me uses various codes and conventions to represent Americans as overweight and fast food-loving. It portrays the U.S. as the fattest country in the world through statistics and footage of real Americans. While it aims to show the negative health effects of fast food, the representation of Americans is biased. It also sympathetically depicts teenagers' struggles with obesity and fast food addiction. Experts are represented as credible sources confirming that fast food is unhealthy.
The document discusses representations of different social groups in the opening of a horror film called "Hallowed Ground." It represents women, men, and religious people. For women, it subverts the typical portrayal by showing a woman overpowering and killing a man, demonstrating her power. For religious people, it initially shows a priest helping others in need but then depicts how they often become victims in horror films. For men, it breaks from conventions by depicting the man as weak and vulnerable, with a woman killing him to flip typical gender stereotypes.

This document analyzes how literature from the past still influences and repeats itself in modern Hollywood culture and celebrity behavior. It discusses how Albert Camus' The Stranger relates to crimes committed by the Lohan family. It also discusses parallels between Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and speeches by Hollywood elites, as well as how women were portrayed in Conrad's time relates to modern celebrity scandals. Additionally, it discusses how a Lockwood poem about love and loss relates to Kim Kardashian's divorce. Finally, it discusses how themes of youth and war in a Margaret Postgate Cole poem connect to the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Overall, the document argues that literature from the past still shapes Hollywood culture
The document summarizes three psychological thriller films: Black Swan, about a ballerina losing her mind as she takes on the role of the Black Swan; The Silence of the Lambs, about a young FBI agent seeking help from a psychopathic killer to catch another serial killer; and Shutter Island, about a US Marshal investigating the disappearance of a patient from an asylum who starts to question if he is part of a plot by the hospital doctors. All three films received high ratings between 8.0-8.6 on IMDB.
Traditionally in horror films, women are portrayed as damsels in distress who are usually attacked and murdered for committing sinful acts. For example, in the film Carrie, Carrie White is bullied and tormented as an outsider while her religious mother sees female sexuality as sinful. However, with the rise of feminism, modern horror films now show powerful women as heroes and villains rather than only victims, reflecting societal changes in perceptions of women's roles. Whereas older films focused on gender representations, newer horror films emphasize global fears like terrorism and portray both men and women working together to overcome threats rather than dividing along gender lines.
This document recommends six memoirs for reading and provides brief summaries of each. The memoirs are: My Lobotomy by Howard Dully, about a boy who underwent a lobotomy; Unbearable Lightness by Portia De Rossi about her battle with anorexia; Etched in Sand by Regina Calcaterra about overcoming an unspeakable childhood; Living History by Hillary Clinton about her life and potential 2016 presidential run; Moonwalking With Einstein by Joshua Foer about becoming a memory champion; and Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua about being raised by a strict mother. The document also lists honorable mention memoirs on its website.
Our target audience for the thriller film would be people aged 15 and above of all ethnic groups and social classes. As the film focuses on a young working Muslim female, members of the Islamic religion may be interested in how their religion is portrayed. Research found that while people enjoy horror films with gore, psychological thrillers that require thinking are also popular. The film is a psychological thriller that uses clues and snapshots in its opening to draw the audience into the story of a young woman in a dream state alone in a hospital without revealing why, similar to popular films like Shutter Island and Minority Report.
This document summarizes and provides information about three psychological thriller films: Shutter Island, Seven, and The Silence of the Lambs. It includes plots for each film, IMDB ratings of 8-9 out of 10 for all three films, and some positive reviews for the films praising them as dark, disturbing, well-crafted, and masterpieces. Links to YouTube trailers for each film are also provided.
Julie Lythcott-Haims' memoir "Real American" recounts her experience growing up as a biracial black woman in America and struggling with low self-esteem inflicted by racism. She describes how subtle and overt racial aggressions can damage one's self-worth. The author shares how finding community helped overcome isolation as an "other." Lythcott-Haims offers a deeply personal story that will resonate with readers as she bravely explores what it means to have an American identity.
The document discusses a novel called "I Call Him HIM" which is about a man who loses his wife and child after a nuclear apocalypse. Without his family, he seeks revenge through violence and darkness. The only hope is a young girl who tries to bring him back to the light with her faith. The novel explores how the man deals with his grief and loss through both physical and emotional struggles against evil forces. It contains some graphic violence, profanity, and religious themes.
Psychopathy research findings media y12Joshua_Paice
Psychopathy is typically viewed as a mental disorder characterized by abnormal or violent behavior without conscience or empathy. Psychopaths manipulate others through lies and deception to get what they want. Key traits include lack of remorse, need for stimulation, pathological lying, parasitic lifestyle, promiscuity, and failure to accept responsibility. While some are violent criminals, others are more subtle. Famous movie psychopaths portrayed in an entertaining way include Norman Bates, Alex DeLarge, and Dexter Morgan, though movies do not always accurately represent gender balance in psychopathy.
Sam introduces themselves as a survivor of domestic violence who has experienced disappointment, heartbreak, violence, abortion, abuse, and rape. They ask for help and have turned to dancing in churches, often singing, drugging, and drinking at pubs. Valerie Miller Simpson also introduces herself as a survivor of domestic violence and abuse, noting that thousands experience such treatment daily. Over 30 years ago, she was held hostage at gunpoint in her apartment, an experience she has written about in her book "Issues and your Tissues." She provides contact information for public speaking engagements.

The document discusses sequential and parallel solutions for completing multiple similar tasks or projects. With a sequential solution, each task is completed from start to finish before moving on to the next task. This allows for full control but is time consuming. A parallel solution involves completing similar elements of all tasks before moving on to the next set of elements. This allows tasks to be completed more quickly but introduces instability if errors are discovered late in the process. The document suggests parallel solutions provide a better global view of the project while sequential solutions optimize each component.

This document provides an agenda and summaries of presentations for a class on sexuality from 1901-1910. It discusses several important events and publications from this period, including the first known autobiography by a self-described homosexual man in 1901, same-sex marriages in Spain, police raids on gay bathhouses in New York, and studies published under pseudonyms exploring homosexuality from scientific and personal perspectives. It also outlines discussions on works like "The Long Arm" and "Paul's Case" and introduces the sexologists Havelock Ellis and Radclyffe Hall, who published influential works on sexuality.
This document provides a summary of two fictional books, Tzili by Aharon Appelfeld and Wartime Lies by Louis Begley, that reflect on the effects of the Holocaust on children. Tzili is set in Jewish Austria and follows a young girl, Tzili, from a Jewish family who is left to suffer under fascist rule. Wartime Lies is also set during the Nazi occupation of Poland and told from the perspective of a young boy who has to lie to survive. Both stories reveal how the anti-Semitic policies and killings of the Holocaust affected children physically and psychologically, forcing them to adapt but also undergo tremendous psychological torture that shaped their identities and future relationships.
