Travelling.
He took some time out to spend with some old friends in the idyllic island of Koh Samui in Thailand
March 2000 – June 2003.
Sanmina - SCI, Irvine, Project Manager
He joined this company to enhance the local knowledge of the core COPICS systems that were in use at the time, written in COBOL
with CICS and IMS/DB. His first role was to develop and test applications using COBOL programs used by Shadow Direct
middleware to obtain data from the IMS/DB hierarchical databases on the mainframe. This was later replaced by the Cross Access
system.
He was chosen to be the project manager in order to implement the core SCI systems in three new factory acquisitions in
Camberley, Greenock and Haukipudas, Finland. The project was planned using MS Project. All these ex-Nokia plants were using a
variety of systems, and were converted over to the COBOL based COPICS systems, firstly on a test basis, then running the
conversion in production. CA-Endevor was also added to the development cycle during this period. This was a huge team effort
involving both the SCI teams in Scotland and USA, as well as the staff of the facility that was being taken over, in all, up to thirty
people involved in the project somewhere in the world. This project was completed to tight schedules with no major problems.
At the same time, he assisted in developing and testing a UNIX based DB2 data warehouse using data held on both Oracle and IMS
DB platforms. In addition to his COBOL support duties, he also wrote and tested server-based software on the NT Servers,
including Excel and Visual Basic programs, using databases on SQL/2000 servers. In addition, he also learnt the WebPlan MRP
simulation package, and was the European Project Manager in the transition from the 5.2 to the 7.1 versions of the system, again
completed to the agreed schedule.
October 1998 – March 2000.
Royal & Sun Alliance, Halifax, Team Leader
His task was to work from the existing business specification to create a new and Year 2000 compliant Claims and Engineering
system. He initially created program specifications and later coordinated the program coding and test plans with three or four other
programmer / analysts, and this was followed through to a full implementation and also post-implementation support. There was also
extensive work done alongside the end-users, both in terms of defining the milestones and deliverables as well as talking through
and finding solutions to day-to-day challenges. This system was written in COBOL, with the use of CICS and IMS/DB databases.
April 1998 – October 1998
Boots Healthcare International, Nottingham, Software Interface Consultant
His task was to provide IBM Mainframe support to the team responsible for creating the customer database for the new SAP R/3
system. This was achieved using Easytrieve Plus to extract the data from the existing IMS databases on the mainframe, to an MS-
ACCESS database. He then wrote Visual Basic programs to extract the data from ACCESS to provide the data in the required for
the SAP load program to work correctly.
October 1997 - March 1998
Lloyds Bowmaker, Edinburgh, Team Leader
His first task was to create a new set of extracts from the existing core system data to enable information to be supplied to third
parties that support the Credit Tracking Systems, written in Cobol/2. Later, he worked on the analysis and programming of the Year
2000 Project, to enable the existing systems to continue running correctly with dates after the year 2000, and led a team of four
programmers.
August 1997 - October 1997
Scottish Equitable, Edinburgh, Senior Analyst
He worked on the data analysis of the Year 2000 Project, to help create reports to management regarding the amount of work
required to bring the existing systems up to the required compliance standard. This was done in liaison with the existing staff and
data models, and the reports were presented to senior IT Management.
Paul Robert Gregory
August 1996 - August 1997
Perot Systems Europe, Nottingham, Team Leader
Perot Systems are the FM Organisation that runs the IT systems for East Midlands Electricity plc. He initially created a new work
planning and reporting system under MS-ACCESS for Windows.
He created, programmed and implemented the changes required for creating the Special Needs Register required by EME's
regulator, leading a team of four people to compete this work, working in Cobol/2 and DL/1.
Next, he created the feasibility study and Project Definition for an implementation of a system to manage ADDACS and AUDDIS
information to and from BACS using the existing IBM and UNIX systems using PC interfaces to gather and collect data. This
involved negotiations with hardware suppliers and specifying changes to existing systems in readiness for the programming phase of
the project.
EME made a management decision to change banks from Midland to National Westminster, and he wrote a new suite of programs
to change over from Connect/Direct software of Midland to BankLink from National Westminster. This again involved the co-
ordination of three programmers working on the project.
With the event of deregulation, several data migration issues were arising, and he worked as a support analyst / programmer to
program the queries required of data from EME’s IMS Databases and present the analysed data to the users.
November 1995 - July 1996
Asda Stores Ltd., Leeds, Senior Analyst/Programmer
He worked on the development of DB2 Extracts from the Databases on the IBM Mainframe to Lotus Spreadsheets, using IBM’s
Application System, providing quick turn around of requests into meaningful analysis information for the Traders on the Trading
Floor. In addition, he was responsible for maintaining and prioritising network and mainframes for 150 Traders and their PC’s.
August 1995 - October 1995.
Standard Life, Edinburgh, Team Leader
He worked on the development of a system to download data interactively from the IBM Mainframe systems to systems being written
on PC based systems. This work was done using COBOL/2, IMS DB, DB2, Micro Focus COBOL Workbench, and XDB, working
with two junior programmers.
January 1995 - August 1995.
American Express, Brighton, Senior Analyst/Programmer
He worked assisting the set up of the test environment for a UNIX designed front-end system to 'screen-scrape' data from the
existing CICS systems. This was done using COBOL/2, DL/I, EASYTRIEVE, DIRECTOR, DATAVANTAGE, and MVS JCL using
an Amdahl mainframe.
March 1994 - January 1995.
Scottish Mutual Assurance, Programmer/Analyst
He spent the first month working on the technical design, programming and testing of the receipt of ADDACS information from
BACS plc. This system records changes to Direct Debit Information for monies coming to the company from their clients, including
the spread of single payments across a range of policies. The computer used was an IBM 3090, running under MVS using COBOL,
CICS, and VSAM.
He spent the last five months of the contract using the Micro Focus Dialog and Cobol Workbench to design and build a new
Quotations system to be downloaded to Laptop and Think-pad computer systems for use by Salesmen in the course of their
business for Scottish Mutual. This also involved leading a team of four programmers in his section, and co-ordinating the work done
in conjunction with the work being carried out by a separate team involved with creating specific calculation programs.
June 1993 - March 1994.
EDS SCICON Ltd, Project manager
He worked on enhancements to the Student Loans management system. He picked up and turned around a political situation where
the customer was unaware that no support / error logs were being resolved. This resulted in much improved relations between EDS
and the customer. He was involved in creating and documenting changes to the Loan Creation Sub-system, as well as creating new
rules to control the tracking of Direct Debit Mandates. This work required both technical skills and User contact, and thorough
Quality Control standards to be adhered to. He led a team of up to four people to complete this work. The computer used was the
EDS SCICON IBM 3090 at Stockley Park running under MVS using COBOL, CICS, and VSAM.
December 1992 - March 1993.
BACG, Leeds, Programmer/Analyst
Working on enhancements to their Distribution Control System prior to the implementation at one of their client’s sites in the South of
England, working on the IBM3090/200J running under MVS using COBOL, CICS, and VSAM. Programs worked on included both
batch and on-line, to allow immediate and over-night reporting facilities to be brought into line with the Customers' Specifications,
and to allow order completions to take place in their on-line environment.
November 1992 - November 1992
S.A.P. (UK.) Ltd.
Successfully completed the SAP RS310 Course in ABAP/4 Programming and Reporting techniques, and now seeks to employ
these skills in a commercial environment. During the course, his instructor informed him that with the depth of experience that he
has obtained during his career, he would have no problem at all in mastering any of the specific modules involved in the SAP
system.
January 1992 - September 1992

Paul Robert Gregory
work with IBM Mainframe (30XX & 43XX) clients using MVS (And MVS/XA and MVS/ESA), VM, and DOS/VSE Operating System
Environments.
His IBM skills gave him the major advantage that he was able to talk in technical terms as well as business terms to his clients, as
well as being able to discuss at the same level as his applicants, thus making some very good matches for the vacancies available.
He made significant use of the bespoke recruitment management system running on the in-house Alpha Micro AM-3000, later
working on Database Administration of the 3GB Database.
October 1990 - December 1991.
Freelance Sound Engineer.
He worked as a Freelance Sound Engineer/Producer for various Bands and Pubic Address System companies.
His works involved various Studio Sessions to record and mix-down various styles of music from English Folk music to Power Metal
Rock, for which he was responsible for the production and post-production work on various albums.
He also worked in the live music scene, managing the shows of his bands and co-ordinating a team of up to ten people and sound
systems that varied from 2 Kilowatts up to 85 Kilowatts, and the various lighting/projector systems required for these shows, all done
to very tight budget and time schedules.
May 1988 - October 1990.
British Aerospace Plc, Senior Consultant / Business Analyst / Project Manager
This contract was working on major enhancements to the new Group Engineering Standards system, based in a team at the
Weybridge/Farnborough sites, although occasional visits to the user sites in Manchester, Preston, and Chester were required.
The initial contract was for one year, with three, six-month renewals offered by the client.
The system was mainly on-line, which required both business, database and programming restructure work. He was responsible for
generating database changes, and for the creation and amendment of PSB's and DBD's used in the new release of the system, and
was the only person allowed to undertake such work outside of the Technical Support Group.
He also worked extensively on the major batch interfaces. The first of these interfaces was to down-load design data from the design
system, from which the Engineering system, using CICS and DL/1, created the shop-floor and purchasing processes required to
build up the structure of the aircraft that had been ordered by Aerospace's client. The other main interface was to take completed
processes and download them to the shop floor and other factory management systems.
The Site visits were mainly to discuss new business aspects and amendments to the existing system directly with the users, thus
allowing him to see first hand what the effects of the changes would be from the user's point of view.
January 1988 - April 1988
Sony (UK.) Ltd, Programmer/Analyst
This contract was arranged for four months, in which time he was working on a batch Procurement System. It was a good
opportunity to refresh his DL/1 IBM skills, which he had not used since his days at CMG.
March 1987 - December 1987
Philips Electronics I.S.A. Ltd, Programming Consultant
He was originally contracted for a three-month contract, which was renewed twice until the 1987 Christmas Holiday break.
He was involved in the creation of the new Forwarding Import and Export systems, being written to conform to the new Common
Market regulations concerning the import and export of goods.
He was responsible for creating and maintaining the Base Tables Sub-system, which included creating new entities via
DataManager, and generation of new PSBs and DBDs as required.
This system actually featured in a video release by HM. Customs and Excise concerning the creation of the new S.A.D. (Single
Administrative Document) that has now replaced the mountain of forms that were previously required.
July 1986 - March 1987.
B.A.S.F. (UK) Ltd., Project Manager
He was responsible for installing packages required by Head Office to assess the true value and basic accounting procedures of a
newly acquired chemical plant in Middlesborough.
The accounting system was developed by the parent company in Germany, and was a basic Nominal Ledger system.
The other package was bought within the UK, and was for Asset Control and Evaluation. Unfortunately, the company that marketed
and supported this system went into liquidation half way through the implementation, but the project was completed on time, and to
budget.
September 1985 - June 1986.
CMG City of London Ltd., Programmer/Analyst, Consultant
He initially joined a team working on a major project to develop a Motor Insurance system in Croydon. However, a month after joining
the team, the client decided to change the machine to be used from an IBM to a WANG, which meant a total re-design of the
system.
He was moved to another system written for Names Agencies for Lloyd's Insurance Syndicates, for which major amendments and a
new system to deal with Names' Investments had to be written on the client's IBM System/34, extending on the small amount of
RPG II experience that he had gained when he was at Ranco.
March 1985 - August 1985.
Hallrite Computer Services Ltd., Project Manager
Hallrite was an offshoot of the old Redman Heenan Organisation, being run by its ex-Managing Director. He had negotiated rights to
the systems written in-house by the old company, and was in need of assistance to bring the systems up to date, both with new
prospective User Requirements and with the new Releases of CICS and DL/1 that were now available.
His first task was on the Purchase Ordering system, which took six months to complete and install, and was performed using the
machine and facilities of Hallrite's client, British Midland Airways, at Castle Donnington, near Derby. This involved programming and
database changes, and required totally re-creating the databases from scratch, and to ensure that the system was acceptable to the
British Civil Aviation Authority, who monitored Airline Supply Chain activity.
Paul Robert Gregory
His second and final task was to adapt an existing on-line print program within CICS to run using an ASCII printer and protocol
converter. This made use of skills he had picked up designing the clocking systems at Ranco.
March 1983 - March 1985.
Ranco Controls Ltd., Project Manager / Programmer/Analyst
Initially, he was involved in making major modifications to COPICS Packages that he had worked on at Heenans. In addition, due to
his previous experience in Structured Programming Techniques, he was also responsible for COBOL Programming Standards, in
what had previously been an RPG II site that had only recently started using COBOL as the major development tool. In addition, he
was responsible for creating new DBD's and PCB's to support the changes that were required.
When the COPICS development changes had been completed, his next project was to assist the System Programmer to merge the
existing ICCF Development System to the new VM/CMS system. This involved creation of Source Libraries (As these had always
been held in ICCF), creating common compile submit routines, and CMS Macros running in disconnected CMS systems to retrieve
and catalogue these Source and Object Modules.
His last project at Ranco was to create a new front-end data collection system for the validation of pay-roll data for the Hourly and
Weekly paid employees of the company. It was decided that DL/1 was not required for this system, and settled for CICS, COBOL,
and VSAM, as this would make it easier for certain elements of the existing system, written in RPG II, to be enhanced for use in the
new software release. Data was collected from both IBM and non-IBM electronic time clocks, which were attached to the Mainframe
using a Protocol Converter. Validation performed matched the clockings of each employee against the company's agreed shift
patterns to calculate lateness, overtime, etc. A new interface was also written in this release allowing the data entry and maintenance
of Statutory Sick Pay information. The last stage of this system created data files and job streams for transmission, using the VM
Remote Spooling Control System, to a remote IBM system where the Payroll was actually processed, and also to receive the
printouts from the Payroll for printing locally in Plymouth.
July 1978 - August 1982
Redman Heenan Computer Services Ltd., D.P. Trainee, Programmer/Analyst, Systems
Support / Project Manager
Initially, he learnt to operate the Honeywell 125 machine, graduating up to the IBM 370/138 when it was installed. After a year in the
Operations Department, he was transferred to the Development Department, where he started to learn COBOL and DL/1 for batch
programming use. He was soon responsible for all maintenance work on the Honeywell machine, which was finally phased out in
1980. During this period, the main programming team was working on a new CICS/COBOL/DL/1 based system for Purchase
Ordering, in which his role was to write most of the programs that provided the over-night batch support to the system, as well as the
programs that provided the initial load to the system from the out-dated system that was being removed from the Honeywell.
When the system was ready to be implemented, he transferred to the Support Department, and became involved in the
implementation of the Purchase Ordering system, as well as various COPICS Packages such as Bill of Materials, Inventory
Accounting, and Material Requirements Planning. During this period, the computer in use was upgraded to an IBM 4341, using
DOS/VSE under VM. He worked in the User Support Role for about a year, being on call throughout the working day to assist with
User queries as they arose, and spent the majority of his time at the five user sites in the Midlands.
The last year that he was at Heenan's was spent working as the Project Manager / Lead Analyst on the new on-line Purchase and
Sales Ledger systems, seeing both systems through from initial design and business specification through to implementation at their
five user sites, bringing both systems on-line on budget and to the initially agreed time schedule. This also included generating the
new databases and pointer segments to existing databases, co-ordinating the generation of PSBs, DBDs and ACB generations for
CICS, particularly the changes to the ACT Table, and also involved managing 12 programmers.
He also implemented the in-house written Shop Floor Control system, which had been developed during the same time period as the
Ledger systems.
He was made redundant shortly before the company went into liquidation.

This included a complete rewire the sound system, and introducing new mixing desks and graphic equalisers. He also designed, built and implemented the ServiceMaster Praise system, which contains all of the words to two versions of the Bible, as well as all the words to the songs sung in church. This was written in Visual Basic 6 using a Microsoft Access 2000 database. Travelling. He took some time out to spend with some old friends in the idyllic island of Koh Samui in Thailand March 2000 – June 2003. Sanmina - SCI, Irvine, Project Manager He joined this company to enhance the local knowledge of the core COPICS systems that were in use at the time, written in COBOL with CICS and IMS/DB. His first role was to develop and test applications using COBOL programs used by Shadow Direct middleware to obtain data from the IMS/DB hierarchical databases on the mainframe. This was later replaced by the Cross Access system. He was chosen to be the project manager in order to implement the core SCI systems in three new factory acquisitions in Camberley, Greenock and Haukipudas, Finland. The project was planned using MS Project. All these ex-Nokia plants were using a variety of systems, and were converted over to the COBOL based COPICS systems, firstly on a test basis, then running the conversion in production. CA-Endevor was also added to the development cycle during this period. This was a huge team effort involving both the SCI teams in Scotland and USA, as well as the staff of the facility that was being taken over, in all, up to thirty people involved in the project somewhere in the world. This project was completed to tight schedules with no major problems. At the same time, he assisted in developing and testing a UNIX based DB2 data warehouse using data held on both Oracle and IMS DB platforms. In addition to his COBOL support duties, he also wrote and tested server-based software on the NT Servers, including Excel and Visual Basic programs, using databases on SQL/2000 servers. In addition, he also learnt the WebPlan MRP simulation package, and was the European Project Manager in the transition from the 5.2 to the 7.1 versions of the system, again completed to the agreed schedule. October 1998 – March 2000. Royal & Sun Alliance, Halifax, Team Leader His task was to work from the existing business specification to create a new and Year 2000 compliant Claims and Engineering system. He initially created program specifications and later coordinated the program coding and test plans with three or four other programmer / analysts, and this was followed through to a full implementation and also post-implementation support. There was also extensive work done alongside the end-users, both in terms of defining the milestones and deliverables as well as talking through and finding solutions to day-to-day challenges. This system was written in COBOL, with the use of CICS and IMS/DB databases. April 1998 – October 1998 Boots Healthcare International, Nottingham, Software Interface Consultant His task was to provide IBM Mainframe support to the team responsible for creating the customer database for the new SAP R/3 system. This was achieved using Easytrieve Plus to extract the data from the existing IMS databases on the mainframe, to an MS- ACCESS database. He then wrote Visual Basic programs to extract the data from ACCESS to provide the data in the required for the SAP load program to work correctly. October 1997 - March 1998 Lloyds Bowmaker, Edinburgh, Team Leader His first task was to create a new set of extracts from the existing core system data to enable information to be supplied to third parties that support the Credit Tracking Systems, written in Cobol/2. Later, he worked on the analysis and programming of the Year 2000 Project, to enable the existing systems to continue running correctly with dates after the year 2000, and led a team of four programmers. August 1997 - October 1997 Scottish Equitable, Edinburgh, Senior Analyst He worked on the data analysis of the Year 2000 Project, to help create reports to management regarding the amount of work required to bring the existing systems up to the required compliance standard. This was done in liaison with the existing staff and data models, and the reports were presented to senior IT Management.
  • 4. Paul Robert Gregory August 1996 - August 1997 Perot Systems Europe, Nottingham, Team Leader Perot Systems are the FM Organisation that runs the IT systems for East Midlands Electricity plc. He initially created a new work planning and reporting system under MS-ACCESS for Windows. He created, programmed and implemented the changes required for creating the Special Needs Register required by EME's regulator, leading a team of four people to compete this work, working in Cobol/2 and DL/1. Next, he created the feasibility study and Project Definition for an implementation of a system to manage ADDACS and AUDDIS information to and from BACS using the existing IBM and UNIX systems using PC interfaces to gather and collect data. This involved negotiations with hardware suppliers and specifying changes to existing systems in readiness for the programming phase of the project. EME made a management decision to change banks from Midland to National Westminster, and he wrote a new suite of programs to change over from Connect/Direct software of Midland to BankLink from National Westminster. This again involved the co- ordination of three programmers working on the project. With the event of deregulation, several data migration issues were arising, and he worked as a support analyst / programmer to program the queries required of data from EME’s IMS Databases and present the analysed data to the users. November 1995 - July 1996 Asda Stores Ltd., Leeds, Senior Analyst/Programmer He worked on the development of DB2 Extracts from the Databases on the IBM Mainframe to Lotus Spreadsheets, using IBM’s Application System, providing quick turn around of requests into meaningful analysis information for the Traders on the Trading Floor. In addition, he was responsible for maintaining and prioritising network and mainframes for 150 Traders and their PC’s. August 1995 - October 1995. Standard Life, Edinburgh, Team Leader He worked on the development of a system to download data interactively from the IBM Mainframe systems to systems being written on PC based systems. American Express, Brighton, Senior Analyst/Programmer He worked assisting the set up of the test environment for a UNIX designed front-end system to 'screen-scrape' data from the existing CICS systems. This was done using COBOL/2, DL/I, EASYTRIEVE, DIRECTOR, DATAVANTAGE, and MVS JCL using an Amdahl mainframe. March 1994 - January 1995. Scottish Mutual Assurance, Programmer/Analyst He spent the first month working on the technical design, programming and testing of the receipt of ADDACS information from BACS plc. This system records changes to Direct Debit Information for monies coming to the company from their clients, including the spread of single payments across a range of policies. The computer used was an IBM 3090, running under MVS using COBOL, CICS, and VSAM. He spent the last five months of the contract using the Micro Focus Dialog and Cobol Workbench to design and build a new Quotations system to be downloaded to Laptop and Think-pad computer systems for use by Salesmen in the course of their business for Scottish Mutual. This also involved leading a team of four programmers in his section, and co-ordinating the work done in conjunction with the work being carried out by a separate team involved with creating specific calculation programs. June 1993 - March 1994. EDS SCICON Ltd, Project manager He worked on enhancements to the Student Loans management system. He picked up and turned around a political situation where the customer was unaware that no support / error logs were being resolved. This resulted in much improved relations between EDS and the customer. He was involved in creating and documenting changes to the Loan Creation Sub-system, as well as creating new rules to control the tracking of Direct Debit Mandates. This work required both technical skills and User contact, and thorough Quality Control standards to be adhered to. He led a team of up to four people to complete this work. The computer used was the EDS SCICON IBM 3090 at Stockley Park running under MVS using COBOL, CICS, and VSAM. December 1992 - March 1993. BACG, Leeds, Programmer/Analyst Working on enhancements to their Distribution Control System prior to the implementation at one of their client’s sites in the South of England, working on the IBM3090/200J running under MVS using COBOL, CICS, and VSAM. Programs worked on included both batch and on-line, to allow immediate and over-night reporting facilities to be brought into line with the Customers' Specifications, and to allow order completions to take place in their on-line environment. November 1992 - November 1992 S.A.P. (UK.) Ltd. Successfully completed the SAP RS310 Course in ABAP/4 Programming and Reporting techniques, and now seeks to employ these skills in a commercial environment. During the course, his instructor informed him that with the depth of experience that he has obtained during his career, he would have no problem at all in mastering any of the specific modules involved in the SAP system. January 1992 - September 1992 Dart Resourcing Group, Technical Consultant Working for a Technical Recruitment and Data Processing industry Search and Selection Company in Slough, mainly on recruitment
  • 5. Paul Robert Gregory work with IBM Mainframe (30XX & 43XX) clients using MVS (And MVS/XA and MVS/ESA), VM, and DOS/VSE Operating System Environments. His IBM skills gave him the major advantage that he was able to talk in technical terms as well as business terms to his clients, as well as being able to discuss at the same level as his applicants, thus making some very good matches for the vacancies available. He made significant use of the bespoke recruitment management system running on the in-house Alpha Micro AM-3000, later working on Database Administration of the 3GB Database. October 1990 - December 1991. Freelance Sound Engineer. He worked as a Freelance Sound Engineer/Producer for various Bands and Pubic Address System companies. His works involved various Studio Sessions to record and mix-down various styles of music from English Folk music to Power Metal Rock, for which he was responsible for the production and post-production work on various albums. He also worked in the live music scene, managing the shows of his bands and co-ordinating a team of up to ten people and sound systems that varied from 2 Kilowatts up to 85 Kilowatts, and the various lighting/projector systems required for these shows, all done to very tight budget and time schedules. May 1988 - October 1990. British Aerospace Plc, Senior Consultant / Business Analyst / Project Manager This contract was working on major enhancements to the new Group Engineering Standards system, based in a team at the Weybridge/Farnborough sites, although occasional visits to the user sites in Manchester, Preston, and Chester were required. The initial contract was for one year, with three, six-month renewals offered by the client. The system was mainly on-line, which required both business, database and programming restructure work. He was responsible for generating database changes, and for the creation and amendment of PSB's and DBD's used in the new release of the system, and was the only person allowed to undertake such work outside of the Technical Support Group. He also worked extensively on the major batch interfaces. The first of these interfaces was to down-load design data from the design system, from which the Engineering system, using CICS and DL/1, created the shop-floor and purchasing processes required to build up the structure of the aircraft that had been ordered by Aerospace's client. The other main interface was to take completed processes and download them to the shop floor and other factory management systems. The Site visits were mainly to discuss new business aspects and amendments to the existing system directly with the users, thus allowing him to see first hand what the effects of the changes would be from the user's point of view. January 1988 - April 1988 Sony (UK.) Ltd, Programmer/Analyst This contract was arranged for four months, in which time he was working on a batch Procurement System. It was a good opportunity to refresh his DL/1 IBM skills, which he had not used since his days at CMG. March 1987 - December 1987 Philips Electronics I.S.A. Ltd, Programming Consultant He was originally contracted for a three-month contract, which was renewed twice until the 1987 Christmas Holiday break. He was involved in the creation of the new Forwarding Import and Export systems, being written to conform to the new Common Market regulations concerning the import and export of goods. He was responsible for creating and maintaining the Base Tables Sub-system, which included creating new entities via DataManager, and generation of new PSBs and DBDs as required. This system actually featured in a video release by HM. Customs and Excise concerning the creation of the new S.A.D. (Single Administrative Document) that has now replaced the mountain of forms that were previously required. July 1986 - March 1987. B.A.S.F. (UK) Ltd., Project Manager He was responsible for installing packages required by Head Office to assess the true value and basic accounting procedures of a newly acquired chemical plant in Middlesborough. The accounting system was developed by the parent company in Germany, and was a basic Nominal Ledger system. The other package was bought within the UK, and was for Asset Control and Evaluation. Unfortunately, the company that marketed and supported this system went into liquidation half way through the implementation, but the project was completed on time, and to budget. September 1985 - June 1986. CMG City of London Ltd., Programmer/Analyst, Consultant He initially joined a team working on a major project to develop a Motor Insurance system in Croydon. However, a month after joining the team, the client decided to change the machine to be used from an IBM to a WANG, which meant a total re-design of the system. He was moved to another system written for Names Agencies for Lloyd's Insurance Syndicates, for which major amendments and a new system to deal with Names' Investments had to be written on the client's IBM System/34, extending on the small amount of RPG II experience that he had gained when he was at Ranco. March 1985 - August 1985. Hallrite Computer Services Ltd., Project Manager Hallrite was an offshoot of the old Redman Heenan Organisation, being run by its ex-Managing Director. He had negotiated rights to the systems written in-house by the old company, and was in need of assistance to bring the systems up to date, both with new prospective User Requirements and with the new Releases of CICS and DL/1 that were now available. His first task was on the Purchase Ordering system, which took six months to complete and install, and was performed using the machine and facilities of Hallrite's client, British Midland Airways, at Castle Donnington, near Derby. This involved programming and database changes, and required totally re-creating the databases from scratch, and to ensure that the system was acceptable to the British Civil Aviation Authority, who monitored Airline Supply Chain activity.
  • 6. Paul Robert Gregory His second and final task was to adapt an existing on-line print program within CICS to run using an ASCII printer and protocol converter. This made use of skills he had picked up designing the clocking systems at Ranco. March 1983 - March 1985. Ranco Controls Ltd., Project Manager / Programmer/Analyst Initially, he was involved in making major modifications to COPICS Packages that he had worked on at Heenans. In addition, due to his previous experience in Structured Programming Techniques, he was also responsible for COBOL Programming Standards, in what had previously been an RPG II site that had only recently started using COBOL as the major development tool. In addition, he was responsible for creating new DBD's and PCB's to support the changes that were required. When the COPICS development changes had been completed, his next project was to assist the System Programmer to merge the existing ICCF Development System to the new VM/CMS system. This involved creation of Source Libraries (As these had always been held in ICCF), creating common compile submit routines, and CMS Macros running in disconnected CMS systems to retrieve and catalogue these Source and Object Modules. His last project at Ranco was to create a new front-end data collection system for the validation of pay-roll data for the Hourly and Weekly paid employees of the company. It was decided that DL/1 was not required for this system, and settled for CICS, COBOL, and VSAM, as this would make it easier for certain elements of the existing system, written in RPG II, to be enhanced for use in the new software release. Data was collected from both IBM and non-IBM electronic time clocks, which were attached to the Mainframe using a Protocol Converter. Validation performed matched the clockings of each employee against the company's agreed shift patterns to calculate lateness, overtime, etc. A new interface was also written in this release allowing the data entry and maintenance of Statutory Sick Pay information. The last stage of this system created data files and job streams for transmission, using the VM Remote Spooling Control System, to a remote IBM system where the Payroll was actually processed, and also to receive the printouts from the Payroll for printing locally in Plymouth. July 1978 - August 1982 Redman Heenan Computer Services Ltd., D.P. Trainee, Programmer/Analyst, Systems Support / Project Manager Initially, he learnt to operate the Honeywell 125 machine, graduating up to the IBM 370/138 when it was installed. After a year in the Operations Department, he was transferred to the Development Department, where he started to learn COBOL and DL/1 for batch programming use. He was soon responsible for all maintenance work on the Honeywell machine, which was finally phased out in 1980. During this period, the main programming team was working on a new CICS/COBOL/DL/1 based system for Purchase Ordering, in which his role was to write most of the programs that provided the over-night batch support to the system, as well as the programs that provided the initial load to the system from the out-dated system that was being removed from the Honeywell. When the system was ready to be implemented, he transferred to the Support Department, and became involved in the implementation of the Purchase Ordering system, as well as various COPICS Packages such as Bill of Materials, Inventory Accounting, and Material Requirements Planning. During this period, the computer in use was upgraded to an IBM 4341, using DOS/VSE under VM. He worked in the User Support Role for about a year, being on call throughout the working day to assist with User queries as they arose, and spent the majority of his time at the five user sites in the Midlands. The last year that he was at Heenan's was spent working as the Project Manager / Lead Analyst on the new on-line Purchase and Sales Ledger systems, seeing both systems through from initial design and business specification through to implementation at their five user sites, bringing both systems on-line on budget and to the initially agreed time schedule. This also included generating the new databases and pointer segments to existing databases, co-ordinating the generation of PSBs, DBDs and ACB generations for CICS, particularly the changes to the ACT Table, and also involved managing 12 programmers. He also implemented the in-house written Shop Floor Control system, which had been developed during the same time period as the Ledger systems. He was made redundant shortly before the company went into liquidation.
