Observations on brain drain and human resources drain

1. Patriotism redefined
Even today, many are under the impression that going abroad or living abroad is a great achievement.
Family and friends feel proud if a person leaves motherland for livelihood. What does that reflect?
Truly it reflects lack of opportunities or money here, but this herd mentality of wanting to be slaves in
a foreign country. Many could argue that several Indians have made a name for themselves in the land
of opportunity like USA, however, come to think of the several who work in sub-optimal conditions
withpassports etc confiscated inseveral countries risking their lives. Only aim is to earn money. People
who were born here, brought up, studied.. want to go and serve some other country. It is remarked
that Lord Rama had remarked “Mother and Motherland are greater than heaven” which also
incidentally is the motto of Nepal. This great country was enslaved and lost several of its treasures due
to slave mentality, now can these enlightened souls not have enriched this country and built this
country like say Japanese did or Singapore did?
Till few years ago, India used to be remarked upon as a Beggar Country. The reasons are not difficult
to find. Most are selfish. They want to live comfortably without caring for others. For our happiness,
we launder others. Even in foreign countries, you can see several who beg. The most shocking aspect
is that people who originated from India and have since migrated feel ashamed to identify themselves
as Indians. Recently, when we travelled, a girl seemed to be Indian by the name, when enquired if she
was from India, replied “I was born and brought up here”. When our Prime Minister visits these
countries and is hailed, the show of passion and when India is playing Cricket, the passion that gets
displayed ends there.
On the other hand, it needs to be appreciated that in places like ISKCON mandir, we can see several
foreigners who have embraced Indian culture wearing dhotis, kurtas, having shikha, singing and
dancing. Ladies wear sarees and interestingly run a canteen that serves pure vegetarian food even
without onion and garlic.
When people of other countries live like Indians, dress like Indians, eat like Indians, why we wish to
ape the west is anyone’s guess. It is a big shame! Here and there, we see the slogan “Incredible India”.
But do we respect our country? Our tradition is rich and our literature is richer than others. When are
the children of this country going to learn to respect this great country and restore its greatness. Even
in our own country, we live like foreigners? Why? Is there any answer to this?
