B Corps, Benefit Corporations, Triple Bottom LineJonathan Press
Certified B Corps and benefit corporations are two types of social enterprises that aim to balance profit and social responsibility. Certified B Corps are certified by B Lab, undergo impact assessments, and must meet certain standards of social and environmental performance. Benefit corporations are a legal status conferred by state governments that requires companies to consider impacts on stakeholders. While both aim for a triple bottom line, certified B Corps have more rigorous third party assessment and standards. They are growing rapidly with over 1,300 corporations worldwide compared to slower growth of benefit corporations in only 26 states so far.
The B Corporation: A New Kind of Company for a New Sector of the EconomySustainable Brands
In this 2009 Sustainable Brands presentation, we learn about the power that "B's" in B Corporations. What they are, why every business should gear up to become one, and how they are set on shaping the future of new enterprise and public policies.
This presentation is a backgrounder on B Corps, as delivered at an information session at MaRS on May 13th, 2011. It includes background on: what is a B Corporation, their ratings system, service offerings, public policy, and implications for access to capital.
This document discusses B Corps and B Lab, a nonprofit organization. B Corps are certified businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. B Lab facilitates a global movement of using business as a force for good. Their vision is for all companies to compete based on overall positive impact. B Lab uses a multi-step approach including building a community of B Corp leaders, creating assessment tools, and inspiring widespread support for socially responsible businesses. Their B Impact Assessment is a free online tool that helps companies measure, manage, and improve their social and environmental performance compared to peers.
This document discusses creating authentic corporate social responsibility initiatives. It begins with an introduction to CSR and its evolution over time. Key elements of CSR are described, including typical initiatives companies engage in. Benefits of CSR to stakeholders like customers, employees and brands are outlined. Emerging trends in CSR like a focus on human capital, leveraging volunteerism, sharing CSR stories, benefit corporations and B Corps are examined. The presentation emphasizes building CSR initiatives aligned with a company's values and mission from the early stages.
To become a certified B Corporation, a company must complete a three-step process:
1. Complete an impact assessment to evaluate their positive impact on stakeholders and the environment.
2. Amend corporate governance documents to require considering non-shareholder interests.
3. Finalize the certification by meeting the minimum score on the impact assessment and paying annual certification fees ranging from $500 to $50,000.
Becoming a certified B Corporation allows companies to compete not only on financial performance but also on their positive social and environmental impact.
Many entrepreneurs – social, triple bottom line or otherwise – do not avail themselves of all potential capital sources when seeking funding to grow or scale, limiting prospects to cash flow their initiatives. This seminar explores a range of options for funding: external in the marketplace, internal within an organization, new ideas and classics not to overlook.
The document discusses B Corporations, which are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. There are currently over 1,150 certified B Corporations across 121 industries in 36 countries with 50 million customers. The certification provides a framework to help companies balance profit and purpose to meet the increasing demands for sustainable business practices.

- The Responsible Business Awards which recognize companies demonstrating positive business and social/environmental impact across BITC's campaign areas.

- Advice for participants on telling their impact story, engaging stakeholders, and structuring strong submissions based on the award criteria.
B Lab is a nonprofit organization that certifies businesses as B Corps if they meet standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. It relies mainly on foundations for fundraising but could increase brand recognition and donations by sponsoring community fundraising drives with partner B Corps. The organization succeeds in marketing through publicizing top-performing B Corps and sustainable business events, but could further its mission by directly engaging more consumers to boost demand for sustainable options.
B Corps are businesses for a new generation of entrepreneurs who desire to see business used as a force for good. By following triple bottom principles and a desire for societal impact, B Corps are changing the way success in business is defined.

Editor's Notes
Why? Gov’t and np are necessary but insufficient. Business is most powerful tool; Purpose I most powerful motivator.
B Corporations fill that gap.
It’s like fair trade, but for the whole company.
