Cabecar of Costa Rica

The Brook Ministries is partnering with the Cabecar to plant a church by committing to financial support for 3 years, sending mission teams, and providing prayer support. In return, the Cabecar will select and train an indigenous pastor, develop a church launch and growth plan, host mission teams, and provide quarterly updates. Eli Solis, Martha Badilla, and David Mora will provide leadership for the partnership.

Adventism and Catholicism. Changing Attitudes ?
- Historically, Seventh-day Adventists held strongly anti-Catholic views and teachings, identifying the Catholic Church as the prophesied "Babylon" and "beast" power. They produced significant publications warning about Catholic influence and conspiracy.
- However, over time Adventist attitudes changed. They began recognizing cruelty on both sides of the Protestant-Catholic divide. Vatican II reforms also lessened anti-Catholic stances. Adventists now have more open relationships with other Christian denominations.

The Second Great Awakening was a religious revival movement in the United States from 1800-1850. It began as a reaction against liberalism and spread rapidly across the country through camp meetings and preachers like Peter Cartwright and Charles Finney. Membership increased most in Baptist and Methodist churches, which stressed personal conversion and emotionalism. The revival encouraged evangelicalism and resulted in reforms like prison reform and the abolition movement. It also contributed to the growth of new denominations and the split between northern and southern churches, especially over the issue of slavery.

Colonial Literature
Plymouth was started by people who wanted religious freedom. In September 1620, they sailed on a ship called Mayflower for more than two months. They signed the Mayflower Compact as an agreement that they would live peacefully.
They landed in Plymouth.
In March 1621, Squanto met the Pilgrims. Squanto showed the Pilgrims how to plant corn, catch fish, and get syrup from maple trees. The Pilgrims thought Squanto was sent by God. Squanto’s whole tribe died while he was in England.
Pilgrim and Puritan colonists came to the “desert wilderness” of America to “seek God’s way.” Christians in Europe felt that the church “had strayed from its original mission and become corrupt. Protestant reformers argued that Scripture, not an institution or its trappings, was the essence of Christian life” (McQuade, 1999).
The Puritans and Pilgrims believed that they were chosen by God to be recipients of His grace; they would arrive at a state of grace through much physical and emotional hardship and by constantly examining their inner lives.
Unlike the English social systems of the time, the Puritans believed that “one person was as good as another, no matter what that person’s social station was” (McQuade, 1999). Though women were still expected to perform traditional roles, like cooking, cleaning, and caring for children.
The Puritans and the Pilgrims were nonconformists, refusing to accept an authority beyond that of the revealed word.
But the "Puritans considered religion a very complex, subtle, and highly intellectual affair," and its leaders thus were highly trained scholars, whose education tended to translate into positions that were often authoritarian (http://xroads.virginia.edu/~CAP/PURITAN/purhist.html#pur).
The famous Puritan statement was that they were to be the “City upon a Hill.”
There is an inherent fear of nature; dark, demonic forces were often believed to reside in the deep woods. American Indians were often considered part of these dark forces. The Puritans wished to convert the American Indian to Christianity.
Early colonists commonly believed in supernatural elements, and they were intolerant of dissent.
In 1692 in Salem Village, Massachusetts several girls started to behave strangely.
The girls’ strange behavior was diagnosed as witchcraft.
The girls accused three women of hurting them. Soon, the panic and hysteria had brought hundreds of men and woman to prison.
Twenty people were hanged after being convicted.

Truth to Power presents the best from twenty years of provocative journalism by Father Andrew Britz, a Benedictine monk at St. Peter’s Abbey in the hinterland of rural Saskatchewan, far from the centres of ecclesiastical and political influence.
Britz was editor of The Prairie Messenger, a prophetic Catholic weekly news journal that has been published by the monks since 1904. He was fearless in speaking truth to the powerful in church and society—to popes and prime ministers, capitalists and clerics. “It is easy producing a prophetic paper year in and year out,” he writes in one of the editorials published in this book. “Prophets call us to a new age.”
The new age for Britz is one that resists an imperial papacy, one in which his church honours and takes seriously the gifts of all the baptized—lay people as well as clerics, woman as well as men, and the poor, especially the poor. Britz’s world is also one where the abuses of liberal capitalism are held in check, where militarization is curtailed, where the earth and all its peoples are treated with respect, and one where all religions act in unity for the common good.
Although Britz is best known for provocative editorials, there is also a deeply contemplative dimension to his writing, the legacy of his life as a monk and a trained liturgist who is deeply steeped in church history.

Dorothy Day
Dorothy Day was a laywoman born in Brooklyn, New York in 1897 who co-founded The Catholic Worker movement. She enjoyed nature and quiet time in her beach cottage. By 1936, there were 33 Catholic Worker houses across the country providing support to those in need. Day started as a journalist and met Peter Maurin, with whom she helped establish homes and Catholic settlement houses to help the poor and advocate for social justice.
