This document provides descriptions of the camera work, mise-en-scene, editing, lighting, and audience theories for three music videos: "Im Not The Only One" by Sam Smith, "Only Love" by Ben Howard, and "Hunger of the Pine" by Alt-J. This music video shows quite a large
amount of Goodwin’s theory of
illustrate as some of the lyrics in the
song are illustrate on screen. For
example, ‘denying every tear’ is
sang while a tear is running down
the housewife’s face. Furthermore,
another example is when ‘for better
or for worse’ is sang and the
housewife removes her wedding
ring from her finger.
Audience Theories:
This music video could be linked to
the Effects Model as it could be said
that the media, in this case the
song/lyrics, can effect the audience
because it can make them feel a
particular way, as they are seen as
passive. As this Sam Smith song is
quite a sad and emotional song, it
means that it could make the
audience emotional and sad.

This music video is mainly disjuncture when
it comes to referring to Goodwin’s theory
because it doesn’t relate to the lyrics of the
song or illustrate them very often. However,
it could be argued that there is evidence of
amplify due to the type of camera shots
with the bike and cycling through the city
that is repeated over and over again. There
is also evidence of illustrate in this video,
only once when the lyrics are ‘show me
heart’ and a member of the audience puts
up a hear symbol.
Audience Theories:
With this song, it is difficult to match to an
audience theory because it isn’t a song that
makes you feel a specific way, or makes you
act in a specific way either, which would be
the effects model or the gratification model,
or even the hypodermic model where a
thought or idea is planted into the
audiences mind.

This video is only disjuncture of
Goodwin’s theory. The video shows
very little, if any, illustration of the
lyrics or meaning in the video,
however it does show some
evidence of amplify. This is because
the same camera angles are used
and the same type of editing such
as slow motion to normal or quick
and back to slow again.
Audience Theories:
This video can be linked to the
hypodermic needle/model as it
could implant a thought or idea into
the audience’s mind. As this video is
based on someone running away
from someone else, and getting hit
by a large amount of arrows but not
dying, could implant the idea of
people being invincible and lasting
forever.
