PAGE SPEAKER’S NOTE
Emerging Issues : From KBSR to KSSR: What Can Go Wrong?
Role : Parents (Disagreeing parents about KSSR)
As parent I should be aware of all the possible shortcomings so as to
be able to take the necessary remedial actions. There are certain issues that I heard
from the media about this issue of KSSR. There are:
1. Each Child Has To Achieve A Pre-set Standard Before Moving On
The obvious problem is the size of the class. What I’m worries is what if my
children’s class has 35 students, waiting for each child to achieve a pre-set standard
will take a long time.!
2. Is There Enough Taught?
This is the one greatest fear that most parents have spoken about.
3. No Exams but only the test for children achievement (band grading)
My children need exams to give them a target to work towards and I am sure yours
does too.
4. Non-Measurable Evaluation
Many parents love examinations because evaluation is fair and transparent.
5. Students Use Technology
If we are looking at computers, will each student be given a computer to work on or if
the research has to be done at home, does each child have a computer at home? Is
the technology used reliable and not prone to problems? If the system breaks down,
do we have a reliable support system that can rectify the problem immediately?
To end, I can only say this. All systems have their merits and flaws. The
KSSR is no different. As parents we cannot merely leave it to the school and hope
our child will reap maximum benefits from the system.

PART 1 : ROUND TABLE (GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL) ONE
PAGE SPEAKER’S NOTE
Emerging Issues : From KBSR to KSSR: It is the best curriculum.
Role : Parents (agreeing parents about KSSR)
1. As a parent, my children need changes in their learning styles. Therefore, I agree
with the new curriculum that the KSSR which is known as Primary School Standard
Curriculum is a standardized English Language Curriculum for primary schools
which introduced by Ministry of Education Malaysia. This curriculum emphasizes on
students' holistic development which means all rounded including spiritual,
emotional, physical and intellectual. It is also introduced to make the education less
examination oriented.
2. What I understand about this new curriculum is, the KSSR covers six key areas
which are the communication, spiritual attitude and values, humanitarianism, literacy
in science and technology, physical aesthetic development and personal
development adding to other skills such as grooming of creativity and innovation,
entrepreneurship and integration of Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) to produce holistic individuals.
3. KSSR emphasizes on the development of basic language skills so that students
have a strong foundation to build their proficiency in the language such as listening,
speaking, reading, writing and language arts. It focused more on basic literacy with
emphases on phonics
4. In KSSR, the assessment is based on both formative and summative evaluation
which is done at the end of particular lesson; unit or term by assessing them
individually. I believe as a parent, the test can measure my children ability and
performance in their learning in the classroom. .
5. As a parent, I believe that KSSR is more practical and beneficial in our education
system. I agree that students nowadays love focusing on the modern way of learning
with the help of technology. Although KSSR emphasizes on basic language too,
however, it also focus on the ICT literacy, critical and creative thinking, reasoning
skills and language arts which make KSSR different from KBSR.
