Panama Canal Expansion & its Huge Significance for US Trade, Ports, Railways,...Shyam Kumar
The Panama Canal Expansion is due to be completed by the end of 2014 / start of 2015. It will massively affect trade between Asia & the US, given the accessibility larger ships will then have directly to US Gulf and East Coast ports. The expansion will allow Post Panamax ships that can carry up to 12,500 TEU (20 foot containers) to transit the Panama Canal, the current limit for Panamax ships is 4,800. This is basically a 160% increase in the capacity of container ships that can transit the Panama Canal. This also applies to bulk ships used to transit ores, grains & coal, as well as to LNG and Oil tankers. It is going to open up significant traffic for East Coast & Gulf ports. In this presentation the impacts of the Panama Canal on the US, its' ports, supply chains are looked at. As well as importantly the impact it could have for investors in various assets.

Part 2 shifts the focus to North America and examines the development of LNG as a transportation fuel in road, rail, sea transport and as an alternative for flare gas reduction/utilization from remote shale plays.
WITH THE CLOSURE of Terminal 6 at Oregon's Port of Portland, the Oregon business and manufacturing community, Oregon farmers, and U.S. farmers upriver along the Columbia as far as Idaho and into Montana, have lost their natural, primary and economic access to commercial international deep-water shipping: a key commercial trade route that was enhanced under FDR, under the Columba River Dam project. Now, however, these manufacturers and farmers have been compelled instead to re-direct their commerce into the Port of Seattle-Tacoma -- Seaport -- in order to keep their business alive. The level of commercial traffic now being re-routed over surface streets exceeds 2000 double semi-trucks per day, in addition to rail traffic, at a level which is unsustainable and costly.
SINCE T-6 CLOSED almost a year ago, the resulting increase in volume at Seaport (due to re-routed Oregon commerce) recently prompted Ports of America to terminate its lease with the Port of Oakland, effective Feb. 19, 2016, and announce it would concentrate operations in Tacoma. Peter Ford, Chief Strategy Officer for Ports of America, stated that the reason for leaving Oakland, was to prepare operations in Seaport for Triple-E generation ships, which will soon begin traffic through the upgraded Panama Canal. This is good, but Ports of America's decision to expand services at Seaport, will also entrench an economic paradigm that, for us in Oregon, is regressive and inefficient: it is non-competitive for Oregonians, and a disservice to our economic development; and for many operators up and down the Columbia river, it ultimately will lead to business losses and closures.
UNDER THESE ECONOMIC circumstances, neither Oregon, nor the Pacific coast community, nor America as an economic entity, can afford to overlook the key position which the Port of Astoria holds at the mouth of the "Great River of the West" -- the Columbia River. The Columbia River constitutes the ONLY low-land, nearly sea-level commercial access from the Pacific Ocean into the interior basins of America. At all our other Pacific ports -- Longbeach, Oakland and Seattle-Tacoma -- access is impeded by the rugged and high mountains of the Sierra Nevadas and the Cascade Ranges. Furthermore, Astoria is actually closer to Asian ports, than those in California and Washington.
IT IS NOW BECOMING a national economic imperative therefore, that the United States should retain and advance its role as a key international economic power, and thereby defend the interests and general welfare of its citizens individually, by tapping into the commercial potential of peerless Harbor at the Mouth of the Columbia, with its 20 square miles of anchorage, and its miles upon miles of harbor frontage situated directly on the main shipping channel, with room enough for dozens, even scores of perpendicular berths for even the largest Next-Gen Triple-E carriers, and more than enough room for development of necessary rail yards.

Panama Canal Finally Opens & Ocean Freight Rates May Plummet? Xeneta
On Sunday, 26 June, the 9,472 TEU Cosco Shipping Panama was the first Panamax-plus container vessel to transit the Panama Canal. Opening some three years late, at a cost in excess of U.S. $ 5.25 billion, the new locks give container ships (neo-panamax) carrying approximately 13,000 TEU's all-water access from Asia to the important US East Coast ports and inland markets.

A large new market for natural gas is under rapid development whilst also reducing emissions. LNG is reaching markets previously inaccessible to pipeline gas; as a fuel for transport and for communities remote from the gas grid. A significant development is the use of LNG in marine transport, which currently uses heavy fuel oils.

***Colonial to Build New Port Arthur Dock; Transforming to Gasoline Hub
Colonial Pipeline said Friday that it is proceeding with plans to connect its
3.2 million bbl Port Arthur Products Station (PAPS) terminal with a new dock and
associated facilities at Port Arthur on the Texas Gulf Coast.
Colonial projects that construction of the new dock and tanks could be finished
in late spring 2017.
The planned facility will give Colonial customers access to marine shipping via
the southern-most segment of the Sabine-Neches Waterway. This waterway serves
the commercial ports of Beaumont, Orange and Port Arthur.
This is line with an OPIS report in June 2015 on Colonial Pipeline's big plans
for the Port Arthur terminal, which was acquired from Shell last year. The plans
were aimed at unleashing the full potential for marine, rail, pipeline and truck
logistics connectivity.
Industry sources told OPIS then that Colonial Pipeline was working on enhancing
the terminal connectivity and unlock gasoline and butane blending opportunities.
The terminal was planning to offer a full suite of logistics services to
customers, which could transform it into a gasoline trading, support and export
hub.
Colonial has other company-owned products terminals, which primarily serve the
operations of its system, but the products station is the firm's first entry
into the independent terminal business, sources said.
Colonial Pipeline was planning to add rail car capability, new pipeline
connections and connectivity to the underutilized marine docks on the Gulf
Coast, they said.
Colonial said Friday that it is engaged in negotiations with several customers
for use of the new dock.
The products station is located in a major refining center; the four nearby
refineries, including Valero and Total, produce more than 1.5 million b/d of
refined petroleum products (over 8% of the total U.S. daily refining capacity).
When completed, the dock will be able to berth up to Panamax-sized vessels with
no height or daylight-only restrictions.
The Port Arthur dock location provides a cost-advantaged option to the congested
Houston Ship Channel and is closer to the Gulf's open waters than Beaumont.
The new dock facility will be supported by 2 million bbl of new storage capacity
which, when combined with products station storage, will provide customers
flexibility in serving markets.
Colonial Pipeline consists of more than 5,500 miles of pipeline, connecting
Houston and the Gulf Coast refineries with markets across the South and the East
Coast. Colonial terminates in Linden, N.J., on the New York harbor. It
transports more than 2.6 million b/d of gasoline, diesel, home heating oil, jet
