Palm Vein Technology
Made by Ankan Das
WHAT
 Biometrics is the technical term for body measurements and
calculations. Therefore, it can be used as a recognition and
identification of a person uniquely by their biological
features.
 Any discernable detail of the human body can be used as a
feature for identification purposes.
Made by Ankan Das
POPULAR
 Fingerprint Authentication
 Iris Recognition
 Face Recognition
 Voice Recognition
Made by Ankan Das
WHY
 Fingerprint Authentication:
 Not very accurate
 Prone to failures, i.e., false positives
 Can be easily copied, since feature detail is quite less
 Can be unhygienic
 Iris Recognition:
 High quality image of the iris can fool the system
 Comparably expensive
 Accuracy can change according to lighting
Made by Ankan Das
WHY
 Face Recognition :
 Again, not very accurate
 There can be approximately a 5% drop in accuracy due to aging
 Dependent on lighting
 Cosmetics and makeup can falter the accuracy rate even further
 Dependent on facial expressions
 Voice Recognition:
 Recorded voice can fool the system
 High inaccurate due to vocal range similarities
 Cheap but highly unreliable
Made by Ankan Das
WHAT IS
 It is the world’s first contactless personal identification
system that uses the vein patterns to detect a person’s
identity.
 One’s palm is used as the “password” for verification
purposes.
 It has a high accuracy owing to vascular patterns being very
intricate and unique from each other.
Made by Ankan Das
NEED FOR
 It is not cheap but it has a significantly lower false positive
rate, almost 0.00008%, which makes it the best in the
market. The false negative is also significantly lower, about
0.01% making it highly effective in most situations.
 Veins, being highly complex, are the best for identification
 Since it is contactless, it is very hygienic and safe to use for
large organizations.
Made by Ankan Das
NEED FOR
 Veins are located inside the human body surface, and
therefore it is protected against forgery and manipulation.
 The position of the palm vein vessels remain the same for
the whole life and its pattern is absolutely unique.
 It records vein patterns only in live individuals. Therefore,
zero possibility of manipulations involving deceased
individuals.
Made by Ankan Das
TYPES OF
 There are two types of vein photography:
 Reflection
 Transmission
 Reflection is more useful technique at low ambient
temperature as blood decreases at cool temperatures.
 At cool temperatures, transmission method provides low
contrast images.
Made by Ankan Das
PRINCIPLE
 An individual’s palm vein image is converted by algorithms into data
points, which is then compressed, encrypted and stored.
 Whenever the person tries to access it, the data is compared with the
stored pattern, and thereby the verification is done.
 Palm vein scanning systems, like those for finger vein ID, use a technology
based on the use of near-infrared rays and the way hemoglobin in the
veins reacts to them.

ALGORITHM
PVT Process Overview
PVTAlgorithm:
PVT User Overview
Made by Ankan Das
WORKING
 Hover your palm a few centimeters over the PV scanner.
 Sensor scans vein patterns.
 Vein pattern along with personal information is stored in database.
 It is a good practice to use both hands during registration since one can get
damaged due to some unprecedented accident.
Made by Ankan Das
APPLICATIONS
 ATMs
 PC and Laptops
 Banking solutions
 Passports
 Libraries
 Hospitals
 IoT home appliances
 High security laboratories and facilities
 Gyms
 Office attendance
 Institution attendance
Made by Ankan Das
ADVANTAGES
 It is economical in comparison to several other biometric systems,
such as iris scanner.
 It has the highest factor of security in the widely used biometric
systems.
 Hidden characteristics and underlying characteristics are used, and
it becomes hard to replicate that.
 Cheap to produce, fast, small and easy to install.
 It is not affected by dryness or roughness of skin or by physical injury
or bruises on the skin.
Made by Ankan Das
DISADVANTAGES
 It can be pretty expensive, since it is not mass produced yet.
 Factors that can affect the quality of the captured image such as body
temperature, humidity, heat radiation and nearness of vein to
surface.
Made by Ankan Das
 New face of biometric identification
 Extremely secure and less time consuming
 Wide range of applications
 Highly reliable and accurate and failsafe
 Highly user friendly
