• After the Kargil War which was between
India and Pakistan:
• General Musharraf took power as a
result of coup.
2000-2001
• the Supreme Court validates
Musharraf's coup and gives him
executive and legislative authority
for a period of three years.
• General Musharraf declared
himself president, while remaining
chief of army staff.
2002
• Musharraf won a referendum on his presidency, thus his period of office got
longer five more years.
• At the same time He approved a range of
changes to the constitutions over 1973.
2007
• President Musharraf dismissed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Iftikhar
Muhammad.
• People made a nationwide protest movement
for his reinstatement.
• Then He was returned his duty.
• but Musharraf declared state of emergency Just before
The Supreme Court, which would take a decision on the
legality of his power.
• With this event a media blockout followed. National
channels like ARY One WORLD, GEO TV and other
channels were also blocked.
• The Government also cracked down on international
channels like BBC and CNN.

these channels were
creating discord, and
were contributing to the
instability of the nation.
• To sum up Musharraf violated the constitutions two times.
• He overthrowed the elected government in 1999.
• And He dismissed Chief Justices.
• Also He violated Article 21.
• Also He ordered the arrest of thousands of lawyers, journalists and activists
who were depanding democracy.
• With this act he violated article 9 & 19.
