Tokenization involves replacing sensitive card details with tokens to facilitate secure digital payments. It works by having a payment provider request a token from a token service provider instead of actual card details when setting up a digital wallet or storing card on file. The token service provider generates a token, maps it to the card details in a secure token vault, and responds with the token. This token can then be used to process transactions, with the token service provider detokenizing it behind the scenes to retrieve the actual card number and complete the transaction securely. Tokenization standards help enable mobile wallets and digital payments while protecting consumers by avoiding storage of raw card data.
This document discusses mobile banking in India. It explains that mobile banking allows people to check balances, transfer money between accounts, and make purchases online without going to a bank. It also discusses telephone banking, debit cards, and micro ATMs which are run by business correspondents to enable banking in remote areas. The document predicts that profits from mobile banking in India will reach 20 trillion rupees within 5 years as more people, especially in cities, adopt these services due to their simplicity and low costs. Banks are promoting mobile banking because it is cheaper than ATM expenses.

In the last 12 years or so, many governments have launched modern identity management systems. These systems typi- cally integrate a set of advanced and complex technologies to provide identification and authentication capabilities. The major output of such systems is smart identity cards that bind the cardholders’ identities to their biographical data and one or more biometric characteristics. The field of government practice has been focusing on the enrolment capabilities and infrastructure rollout, with little focus on smart card applications in the public domain. This article attempts to ad- dress this area in the body of knowledge from a government view point. It explores card reader adoption opportunities in both the public and private sectors, and attempts to outline the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE’s) government’s plans to disseminate card readers and promote their adoption in government and various industrial groups in the country.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was established in 2009 as a statutory body under separate legislation to issue unique identification numbers (UID) to all Indian residents. The UID will be a 12-digit number that uniquely identifies residents and can be verified cost-effectively. It will help improve delivery of social services and financial inclusion. The UIDAI aims to issue IDs to 1.2 billion residents of India and ensure privacy by only providing yes/no responses during authentication and not revealing any personal details. Nandan Nilekani is the chairman of UIDAI which has faced challenges in issuing IDs at an unprecedented scale and computational power needed for duplicate checks against over 1.2 billion records.

Internet banking, also known as e-banking, allows users to perform banking functions through their personal computer by accessing their bank's website. The ICICI Bank launched online banking in India in 1996. E-banking provides benefits like convenience and accessibility for customers as well as cost savings for banks by reducing branch transactions and operational costs. However, security concerns remain an issue as online banking increases the risks of hackers accessing customer accounts. Regulations and security measures will need to continue evolving to fully address privacy and fraud protection as virtual and branchless banking models grow in the future.

The document discusses the rise of fintech in Asia, particularly in lending and digital identity. It notes that Asia became the largest fintech market in the world in 2016, with lending being the most popular destination for investors. However, traditional credit scoring does not work well for many in Asia who are unbanked. New approaches using alternative data from smartphones and payments are being developed to enable scoring and lending to more people. Digital identity is also emerging as important beyond credit scoring, with some countries like China developing national social scoring systems. Blockchain may provide opportunities to give individuals more control over their digital identities and data.

E-banking began in India in the 1990s and has grown significantly since then. The three main points are:
1) ICICI Bank launched India's first online banking services in 1996, and e-banking adoption increased rapidly in the late 1990s as internet access became more affordable and widespread.
2) By the mid-2000s, e-banking transactions comprised around 15-20% of transactions at major banks like ICICI and HDFC, up from only a few percent previously.
3) E-banking provides significant benefits and conveniences to both customers and banks by reducing costs while allowing 24/7 access to services, but it also raises issues regarding security, privacy,

Managing & Securing the Online and Mobile banking - Chew Chee SengKnowledge Group
Mobile devices are increasingly used for both personal and work purposes. As mobile connectivity grows, security risks have also increased, necessitating new authentication methods. One-time passwords (OTPs), which have been used for over 25 years, are now obsolete and insecure due to vulnerabilities like man-in-the-middle attacks targeting SMS OTPs. New solutions using public key infrastructure (PKI) certificates on mobile devices can eliminate these attacks by uniquely identifying devices for two-factor authentication. Mobile PKI provides a secure authentication method that leverages the ubiquity of mobile phones and can be used across multiple applications and services.

Cyber crimes negatively impact businesses. They include hacking, phishing, and denial of service attacks. The National Bank of Pakistan experienced a major cyber attack where a criminal gang hacked ATMs and withdrew millions of rupees. The bank suspended its ATM service with other banks and is working with law enforcement to investigate the incident. While Pakistan has cyber crime laws, experts note that more awareness and stronger enforcement is still needed.
