James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper was born in 1789 in New Jersey to a wealthy family. He was educated locally and briefly attended Yale but was expelled. He then joined the US Navy and served from 1806-1809. After inheriting his family fortune in 1811, he married and began writing novels for income after his brothers died. His first novel The Spy was published in 1821 and was successful, leading him to pursue writing as a career. He is best known for The Leatherstocking Tales series featuring frontiersman Natty Bumppo, beginning with The Pioneers in 1823. Though criticized in his later years, Cooper made significant contributions to the development of the American novel.

Samuel Egbert, Margaret Mariah Beckstead, and Louisa Minerva Petty were Mormon pioneers who traveled westward in the 1840s-1850s. Samuel and Margaret married in 1839 and had 5 children. They lived in Nauvoo, Illinois until being forced out by mobs in 1846. They traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa and then to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1849. Samuel later married Louisa in 1857. They settled in West Jordan, Utah, where Samuel was a farmer and school teacher. Both Samuel and Margaret contributed to the early development of West Jordan.

- 1. Albert Bierstadt Paintings of the West Born and educated in Germany, Albert Bierstadt traveled to the American West in 1859 in the company of several other artists. Prior to his departure, he announced on January 17, 1859 in The New Bedford Daily Mercury that his intentions in traveling west were to “study the scenery of that wild region, and the picturesque facts of Indian life, with reference to a series of large pictures.” Captivated by the West, he ventured there numerous times throughout his life and settled in California for two years. Much of Bierstadt’s painting speak to a time lost, when the West and California were uncharted territory and when individuals began to take hold of the beliefs of Manifest Destiny.
