World Art Project
The World Art Project residency program allows students to explore the following 8 hands–on art techniques from around the world: Turkish and Japanese Suminagashi marbling applied to paper and silk, making linen paper with flowers, ferns, gold, silver and metallic iridescences, paste painting and momigami paper design, making Egyptian papyrus paper, bookbinding, and letter press printing. Each student learns the rich history of these decorative folk arts including the historic role Philadelphia and Pennsylvania played in papermaking and printing. Using only 100% authentic tools and materials students produce lots of take home art. A teacher resource packet with project specific worksheets and material lists is provided for lesson extensions. I believe that the arts by their very nature stimulate participation, and that everyone is artistically gifted.

In the heart of Wisconsin, where the Menomonie people have lived for many thousands of years, in a small city that houses a medium-sized liberal arts university, some generous and visionary individuals, organizations, and corporations join forces to celebrate culture and reinvigorate community. Fueled by entrepreneurial spirit and passion for the arts, many of the creative collaborations bring together individuals representing diverse perspectives. One of these undertakings is the upcoming event series, Expressions of Place sponsored by the College of Fine Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. During this talk I will present the genesis for this project, the variety of arts and geography mash-ups in the program, some obstacles encountered as well as discoveries made while organizing this compendium on mapping, sensing, living and expressing Place.

in Harbledown Hope you will read about a young orphaned fox’s traumatic journey, drawing on the challenges and experiences faced by the homeless who have written and illustrated this book. It is a story of hardship, pain, loss and discrimination, but through friendship, courage and sacrifice, comes hope. All profits from the sale of the book go to Catching Lives homeless charity in Canterbury to support their work with the most vulnerable in society.

The occurrences of light festivals in UK cities has grown exponentially in the last decade, yet little is known of their impact on participants’ and audiences’ lives; how the spatial landscape of their urban contexts shapes participants feelings and behaviours. Much has been studied of the impact of cultural festivals, how they may be central to our identification with place, however, investigation into light festivals has been minimal, therefore the research aims to address this gap, particularly focusing on a small event, where empirical evidence is lacking.
Utilising a case study of a small lantern procession in Ordsall, Salford, which started in 1994, Gail will analyse the 2018 festival, which marks a major anniversary for an inner-city community, whose landscape and sense of place is increasingly influenced by central and peripheral private housing developments. The research seeks to understand how this annual lantern procession deepens a sense of place for established residents and introduces the character of place to newer residents.

Green, most calming of colours, has many shades. It is the colour of money. It is also the colour of the environment. For too long, the twain have not met. However, with global warming and an energy crunch, sustainable environment friendly businesses have begun capturing the world’s imagination.

Kristen’s gourd art is inspired by the
sense of movement in the shapes and
forms of the gourds themselves, and
include the themes of water, leaves,
trees,animals and flowers.Her favor-
ite gourds are more abstract in na-
ture and capture the essence of the
subject matter while retaining the
earthiness of the gourd. She grows
her own gourds and uses a variety of
techniques including wood burning,
carving, staining, weaving, marbling
and often embellishes them with
natural objects and fibers.

Adam Costello Photography
Steve’s work focuses on stripping away the veneer of commercialized
packaging that disguises the stresses put upon the planetary environ-
ment. Using a blend of new and traditional printmaking techniques, in-
cluding stone lithographs, zinc etchings, monoprints and drawings, he
hand prints all of his work on archival paper. His zinc plates are ground
down and reused after completing the edition run; the lithographs
are drawn and printed on reusable stones; and he recycles old cotton
clothes into his hand made paper.

Adam makes his photographs the
old-fashioned way, with film and pa-
per. His work conveys the beauty of
landscapes and nature settings, in
both black and white and the Van-
dyke brown print. His equipment
consists of various 35mm, medium
and large format systems, including a
5x7 Seneca City View camera made
in the late 1800’s. His favorite cam-
era is his Speed Graphic Pacemaker
that he has been experimenting with
making soft focus lenses adapted to
fit to the front of it.

Brenna’s work has a sense of place
and healing. She is reclaiming and
transforming the doll tradition that
was a large part of her girlhood.
As a feminist, her figures all begin
as female, reflecting the strength
and complexity of the feminine.The
head, hands, and feet are formed
with clay and the body with fabric or
clay. She then incorporates recycled
and found materials along with many
earth elements such as sticks, mud,
rags, seedpods and others to com-
plete the piece.

Rhiannon imbues her whimsical
bead-woven creations with her
experiences of playing characters,
singing stories, and constructing
enchanted environments on stages.
A love of the abstract, combined
with a colorful aesthetic that relies
heavily on collage and utilizes
unusual resources, gives her work
its signature appeal.
Jewelry is a natural

- and even public art are all realms to
which she has increasingly traveled

his year’s Powderhorn Art Fair
image is by polymer clay artist
Laura Burlis. “Powderhorn Art
Fair” is an original piece created
especially for this year’s art fair.
An image of the clay piece is seen in
this year’s PR and on the 2016 t-shirts
that are for sale at the Powderhorn Art
Fair. The original polymer clay art can
be seen in Laura’s booth (177) during
the art fair.
“The 25th Anniversary of the
Powderhorn Art Fair has a special
meaning to me because it began
the same year I first moved into
the Powderhorn neighborhood of
Minneapolis. Four houses and twenty-
five years later, I’ve circled the park-
living on the west, north, and southeast
sides- and still live just half a mile away.
This Art Fair holds a special place in my
heart, from first visiting it as a neighbor
and seeing my local artist friends
exhibit their work, to participating
in the Community Showcase for six
years, and now being a Main Exhibitor
Artist for the third time this year. For
25 years, the Powderhorn Art Fair has
provided a high quality juried Art show
featuring local & regional artists in an
extremely diverse urban environment,
set in an incredibly beautiful natural
setting with a little lake with its own
bird sanctuary island.
I created my 25th Anniversary
commemorative piece to illustrate
that “Aha” moment I’ve experienced
so many times- entering the park from
its leafy, green rim high on the hillside,
where you can gaze down to the lake
with its circle of tents preparing for an
all-weekend festival. You can choose
to go down & participate in all the
excitement, or you can just hang out
on a quiet bench under huge shade
trees. The natural bowl shape of
the park seems to enhance a sense
of community and foster creative
exchanges. I included the island with
one of its resident birds- a great blue
heron- and the urban canoers- because
these are some of the things that make
this city park really special to me.
My image is created with polymer
clay- a medium I’ve been enchanted
by for the last eight years. This clay
is not from the earth- it’s made of
liquid plastic and pigments- a magical,
colorful substance that lends itself to
making intricate patterns and detailed
miniature scenes and objects. The
repeating patterns are created by
making logs of clay that when sliced,
reveal a hidden pattern- similar to
cutting slices of sushi. I then assemble
all the slices and pieces of cut-out clay
together into a flat sheet to make my
design, and “cure” the plastic clay in a
home oven. Once it’s been baked, the
clay becomes similar to PVC piping in
strength and consistency.
The colors are so bright and the
surprises inherent in the techniques
are so delightful that working with the
clay often feels like I’m playing with
candy. Yet my work is informed by a
lifetime of observing the natural world-
especially plants. I’m an avid gardener
& volunteer as a Master Gardener- so
I try to bring the essence of nature
together with the playful, happy feel
of the clay in my switchplates and
sculptures. My aim is to provide a
sense of delight and an “aha!” moment
to everyone who views my work.”

By Dan Rein
I
t was sunny August Saturday at that first Powderhorn
Art Fair. I was walking around searching for my wife’s
art booth, when I suddenly heard some music. Turning
around, I eyed someone sitting on a park bench playing
accordion. The music was Irish, I looked closer at the
gentleman playing, then it dawned me that this was
Paddy O’Brien the renowned Irish musician. Friends
had introduced me to his music, mostly in noisy pub
settings. That day he played for the art buyers and
artists in the pastoral park setting. This acoustic music
was a great idea, and began the tradition of music at the
art festival.
I did not know Paddy at that time, but through the years
of many interviews, concerts, parties, pubs, and birthday
cakes, we have become close friends. For sixty years he
has been working the musical fields of his homeland.
His encyclopedic knowledge of Irish music continues to
grow. His passion for learning and understanding the
music never seems to wane. In this day and age, much
of the music and many of the musicians are in a rush,
in hurry to get somewhere. With Paddy, his search is
for something that speed and flash will not attain…his
quest is for the heart, the feeling, the soul of the music.
His ultimate goal is to express the joy, the pain, and
beauty of being human.
Hear our local treasure, Paddy O’Brien at 2 PM Saturday
and Sunday on the music stage. www.paddyobrien.net

VISION
One man’s vision, a
$300 loan, and a host of
neighborhood volunteers
created the first Powderhorn
art fair in 1991. Subsequent
art fairs would follow, but
not without a bit of drama
worthy of a soap opera.
A “perfect storm” was
gaining momentum in
1990, as neighborhood
activists secured four new
playgrounds, hosted a park centennial celebration, and
lobbied to elect one of their own to the Minneapolis Park
Board. Around that time, Michael Kehoe and I joined
the long-established Powderhorn Activities Council
(PAC), seeking to re-introduce soccer and increase arts
programming. Formed in the 1960s, PAC had successfully
won major park capital improvements and established
strong football, baseball, and wrestling programs.
Michael introduced his idea of creating a regional art fair
at a PAC meeting. He said a juried art fair would offer local
artists wider exposure and introduce a larger audience to
our inner city community. Art fair profits would fuel arts
programming. PAC voted that $300 be granted to produce
the art fair. Michael asked me to join the effort. We hoped
to solicit enough artists and not lose money.
Around the same time, several long-time Uptown Art
Fair artists, juried out and seeking a new venue, met with
our homegrown park commissioner. They joined our
committee. The eighty-five quality artists goal was met.
Publications and publicity were modest, but the outpouring
of enthusiastic community volunteers was phenomenal.
OPENING DAY
At 10 a.m. starting time, Michael and I walked the loop.
Arts patrons were already streaming into the park. Noisy
geese commanded everyone’s attention as the squawking
V circled over park greenery and slid onto the lake’s surface.
A good omen.
Musicians, jugglers, magicians, and local poets performed
at designated stages. Uninvited Ecuadorian musicians
arrived, but Michael welcomed them to new “stages”
where their pan flutes added magic. Artists, volunteers, and
patrons from places like Minnetonka, Woodbury, and Eagan
raved about the new art fair—“It’s peaceful here.” “The
quality of art is wonderful.”
“I didn’t know this park was
here!” Just what we hoped
to hear.
I booth-sat for an artist
whose entire pressed-flower
compositions sold out the
first day. She drove home
to Mankato and stayed up
all night to make more for
Sunday. Even artists without
sales reported they would
apply next year.
LEGACY
On Sunday evening, when all artists, food vendors,
volunteers, musicians, face-painters, magicians, park staff
and police officers were gone, Michael, Eric Hanson, and
I collapsed on the curb in front of the park building. “How
much money did we lose?” I asked Michael. He pulled a
bundle of cash and checks from his pocket (food vendor
fees). We counted the money. Calculating expenses, we
estimated a $3000 profit! Icing on this incredible cake of
a perfect weekend.
Remarkably, there was start-up money for the next year, plus
funding for arts programming. Theater, pottery, photo, and
music programs would benefit from art fair funding. And,
after three years of wrangling, sports programs would be
supported too.
The Powderhorn Art Fair’s twenty-five-year story twists
and turns, soars, and dives, and is fraught with a cast of
passionate and well-intentioned characters. Contentious
accusations, a gambling junket, kidnapped football
uniforms, and voodoo dolls add fodder to this art fair’s tale.
Who could have predicted that a neighbor’s vision and
$300 would grow into an acclaimed regional arts event?
For a quarter of a century, the Powderhorn Art Fair has
provided a low-key, nature-infused art sales environment.
The fair is an incubator for emerging community artists
and is a marketing tool that showcases our inner-city
neighborhood’s fine qualities. As a member of the cast of
passionate and well-intentioned characters, I am proud to
have played my role.
Shari Albers helped create and develop the first three
Powderhorn art fairs. Her 1992/1993 art fair illustration
was updated for the 20th anniversary, and she created the
2008 graphic. Albers and Marcia Foutch established the first
Community Showcase in 2001.

I’m excited for this year’s art fair. Not only because it’s a
notable and community inspired Powderhorn event; but
this year also marks the fair’s 25th Anniversary. We’ve
come to this milestone by support from thousands of
amazing artists, vendors, volunteers and loyal attendees
over the years.
The Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association
(PPNA) is fortunate to have an on-going partnership
with the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB);
an enthusiastic supporter and partner of this event.
Each year, we’re lucky to host the fair in one of the most
picturesque parks in Minneapolis.
In my first year as the Executive Director for PPNA, it’s
been easy to see that a key reason for the event’s success
comes from the contributions of the planning committee.
I’m especially appreciative of Dixie Treichel, the fair’s
Artistic Director, who in her fourteen years of supporting
this event continues to help curate a memorable arts
experience.
As I think about the importance and power that art has in
creating a sense of place in our communities, it’s my belief
that the power of the arts will also play a role in how we
reveal, discuss and heal many of the social, political and
economic problems of our time.
On behalf of the staff and boards of PPNA & MPRB;
welcome to the 25th Anniversary Powderhorn Art Fair.

I
’d like to extend a warm welcome
to all of you visiting Powderhorn
Park for this year’s Powderhorn
Art Fair. This event is truly amazing!
Whether this
is your first
time or you
have been
here many
times, you’ll find that the event is al-
ways fresh and new, with many excit-
ing artists displaying their creations
and food vendors that represent all
corners of the world.
While thousands of people enjoy this
event every year, it has traditionally
produced a lot of waste that we have
started to think about differently. A
major commitment that we’ve made,
as event organizers, is to work to-
wards becoming a truly green event.
As our ability to compost and recycle
more items evolves within our com-
munities, so will the ability at our
events.
Last year, we composted or recycled
about 70-80% more waste than the
previous year.To put this in perspec
tive, that’s the equivalent of roughly
seven green trash dumpsters that
remained empty, due to participants
taking the time to dispose of items
p r o p e r l y.
That’s quite
impressive!
We’d like to
continue on
our quest, so as you enjoy the Art
Fair, please join us in our efforts by
disposing of compostable and recy-
clable materials into appropriate con-
tainers located throughout the park.
Powderhorn Art Fair: A Green Event
Submitted Photos
The Powderhorn Art Fair works hard at keeping it green, providing fresh tap water, composting, and recycling.
Recycling,
Compost and Trash
Where am I supposed
to put my garbage?
Look for the green flags.
There will be five strategi-
cally placed waste stations
positioned throughout the
event. Each waste station
includes a 10 x 10 tent,
green flag marker, waste
stations banners, and three
types of waste receptacles
(organic waste, recyclable
waste and trash waste).
Volunteers will be at each
waste station assisting and
educating art fair goers
about the proper way to
dispose of their waste.
Our volunteers have been
known to dig down deep
and remove compost from gar-
bage, but every year our audience
gets better at the garbage separation.
We are proud to be a green event.
“Please join us in our efforts by disposing of compostable/recyclable
materials into appropriate containers located throughout the park.”
It's the little things!
