ATOMISE POWDERS FOR FRICTION LININGS INTRODUCTION Pacific Metal Powders produces a range of non-ferrous Metal Atomise Powders for use in Friction Lining materials. All products are produced from pure raw materials with known chemical composition to ensure that the final product has the minimal Heavy Metal Content and low environmental impact when used in the final Friction Lining. Pacific Metal Powders gives technical support to customers and has a policy of modifying and developing products to meet specific application demands. Both new production techniques and new products are actively being developed in the Company’s R & D projects. PRODUCTS Pacific Metal Powders produces Spherical, Irregular and Needle Atomise metal powders. Metals and alloys range from low melt point materials such as Zinc to higher melt point materials such as Copper and its alloys. Spherical atomise particles of Copper and Bronze (Cu/Sn alloy) are produced. Irregular atomise particles of Brass are produced. Needle atomise particles of Brass, Bronze, Aluminium and Zinc are produced. CHEMICAL PURITY All products are made to a low Heavy Metal Content (HMC) specification. The actual HMC content depends upon the metal alloy but TOTAL content will be below 70 ppm (0.007%). Typical analysis will give the following contents: Lead (Pb) max 20-50 ppm Cadmium max 3-10 ppm Antimony max 1- 3 ppm

BACKGROUND Brass Chipping and Gunmetal Chippings (Cu/Sn/Pb Bronze alloy) have commonly been used in many Friction Lining Materials but are known to contain between 2% to 6% Lead (Pb). This causes environmental concern when incorporated into the final Friction Lining product. Other types of metal powders such as Atomise and Granular products are produced with low Heavy Metal Contents but are always of Spherical or Irregular particle shape unlike Brass and Gunmetal Chippings which are Elongated shaped particles. Needle atomise as produced by Pacific Metal Powders has been specially developed to combine the low Heavy Metal Content of normal atomise powder with the elongated particle shape of Chippings. 2. ADVANTAGES OF NEEDLE ATOMISE A) ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY Needle atomise is produced direct from the molten metal; careful selection of raw material and control of the melting process ensures that the products have the minimal Heavy Metal Content. B) CONTAMINANT FREE Unlike Brass and Gunmetal Chippings which are recycled materials from machining operations, Needle atomise is 100% oil and grease free. C) FORMULATION Because the particle shape is similar to Chippings, Needle atomise can be used as a substitute without major changes to the formulation. Elongated particles also give much better dispersion within the formulae resulting in superior processing. D) STABILITY Because of the elongated particle shape the metal powders have more adhesion and better long term stability in the brake system than spherical or irregular particles. The better dispersion of the particles within the formulae also enhances long term brake performance.

PARTICLES SIZE DISTRIBUTION Needle Atomise is produced is particle sizes ranging from 60 micron up to 1000 micron. Standard grades typically have a Size Distribution of 150 micron to 850 micron. Fine grades typically have a Size Distribution of 60 micron to 630micron. Pacific Metal Powders can make Particle Size Distributions to match customer requirements. PRODUCTS Spherical particles of Copper and Bronze atomise are produced. Brass alloys are of irregular particle shape. 2.
