The document presents a framework for quantitatively assessing the interaction between the agricultural sector and rural economic development at the community level. It uses micro-data from the 2006 Canadian Census of Agriculture and Population to estimate economic flows between farms and communities, focusing on labor market linkages. Results show that about 850 agriculture-intensive communities rely more on off-farm labor supply from farm households, while around 320 rely more on labor demand from local farm businesses. The framework provides a way to quantitatively analyze these interrelationships that has not previously existed at the community scale.
