This document summarizes a study that characterized skin/hair care gels made with three different polymers (Carbopol 980, Stabileze QM, and Ultrathix P-100) using rheological and sensory evaluation methods. Both conventional rheology and Fourier transform rheology with large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) data were used to characterize the materials with and without wall slip. Sensory analyses evaluated ease of spreadability, cushion, slipperiness, and other attributes. Statistical analyses revealed correlations between sensory ratings and rheological parameters. The occurrence of wall slip and applied shear rates can impact material response and sensory perception. Rheological characterization of hydrogels presents challenges due to

The Charming Genius of the Apollo Guidance ComputerBrian Troutwine
The Apollo Project was the first flight system to deploy with a digital, general-purpose computer made of integrated circuits at its core: the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC). It was a complete research project: no IC computer had run consecutively for more than a few hours, sophisticated programming techniques were unknown and the interactive human/computer interface had to be invented and made to appeal to astronauts opposed to machine interference in flight operations.
In this talk I'll give the historical context for the AGC, discuss its initial design and the evolution of this design as the Apollo Project progressed. We'll do a deep-dive on the machine architecture and note how tight integration with a special-purpose vehicle admitted incredibly sophisticated behaviour from a primitive machine. We'll further discuss the human/computer interface for the AGC, how the astronaut's flight roles dictated the computer's role and vice versa. Motivating examples from select Apollo flights will be used.
Throughout, we'll keep an eye on lessons to be gleaned from the experience of engineering the AGC and how we can adapt these lessons to modern computer systems in mission-critical deployments.
Properties of the cake layer in the ultrafiltration of polydisperse colloidal...eSAT Journals
Abstract The properties of the cake layer formed during the ultrafiltration of polydisperse silica colloid using the Karman Cozeny equation have been studied and are compared to the experimental results obtained from SEM and AFM analysis. AFM analysis is used to give a direct comparison to SEM analysis in order to give a better understanding of the cake properties formed at different compositions and different pH’s. The trend of the filtration rate of binary mixtures of silica particles (W30 and X30) were analysed and correlated to the results of the specific resistance obtained from SEM analysis. The study involves analysing the fouled membrane from the top view and from the cross sectional view. This present work has found that results from the SEM and AFM analysis corresponded to each other in terms of particle arrangement and the average cake thickness. Keywords: polydisperse; cake resistance, colloidal -interaction

Behaviour of bituminous concrete modified with polyethylene glycol for blade ...eSAT Journals
Abstract Aggregates are the principle material in pavement construction. Conventional road aggregates in India are natural aggregates obtained by crushing rocks. Aggregate characteristics such as particle size, shape, and texture etc.., influence the performance and serviceability of pavement. Pavements laid with polymer modified bitumen exhibits greater resistance to rutting, thermal cracking and fatigue damages and hence these were used at locations of higher stress. The present work concentrates on aggregate characteristics which include the shape indices. The particle shapes namely Blade and Disk are being used in the study. The study shows the behavior of the two shapes of aggregate in terms of Penetration, Ductility, Softening Point and Marshall Stability tests with varying percentages of bitumen and also with varying the percentages of PEG. The results of unmodified bitumen mix are compared with the modified bitumen mix against some critical Marshall Mix parameters. Keywords: Shape of the aggregates, Bitumen modified with polymers, PEG, Stability and Flow of bitumen.
