• Maslow’s hierarchy of human
needs
• Five layers of what is important
to every human being.
• On level four is the need for
acceptance.
• Every human being desires to
be esteemed to feel fully human.
• Maslow’s submission
• seeking applause is a legitimate human
need.
• However, when this need rises
above the normal level of self-
worth and esteem, then it descends
into a trap with the imminent
danger of destruction.

them to be happy. And they will do
whatever it takes to keep them that way.
They put everyone else before themselves.
For some, saying ‘yes’ is a habit. For
others it’s almost an addiction, it makes
them feel like they need to be needed. This
makes them feel important and like they
are contributing to someone else’s life.
One who takes decisions
based on the desire for
popular acclaim.
One who acts with the desire
for acceptance irrespective
of the implications.
One who sometimes fails to
act so long as it will earn
them approval from some
people.

HOW TO OVERCOME
THE TRAP OF APPLAUSE
1. Place God First
Furthermore, then we beseech you, brethren, and
exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have
received of us how ye ought to walk and to please
God, so ye would abound more and more.

4. Understand
Your Worth

On the contrary, we speak as
those approved by God to be
entrusted with the gospel. We are
not trying to please people but
God, who tests our hearts.
5. Accept Your Responsibility
1 Corinthians 9:19-23 (NIV)
Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to
win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those
under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the
law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like
one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s
law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the
weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might

7. Consider Consequences
There’s trouble ahead when you live only for the approval of
others, saying what flatters them, doing what indulges them.
Popularity contests are not truth contests—look how many
scoundrel preachers were approved by your ancestors! Your task
is to be true, not popular.

CONCLUSION
• Pleasing those we love is rewarding
•This may not be wrong in and of itself.
• But pleasing God is a higher calling and much more fulfilling.
•We are headed for trouble when our desire to please people
and gain their approval becomes as important as pleasing
God and sensing his approval.
• E. M. Bounds, in his book, Power Through Prayer, noted that disciples who are
“…timid time servers, place seekers, if they be
men pleasers or men fearers…they cannot
take hold of the Church nor the world for
God.”

  • 3. INTRODUCTION • Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs • Five layers of what is important to every human being. • On level four is the need for acceptance. • Every human being desires to be esteemed to feel fully human.

  • 46. • Pleasing those we love is rewarding •This may not be wrong in and of itself. • But pleasing God is a higher calling and much more fulfilling. •We are headed for trouble when our desire to please people and gain their approval becomes as important as pleasing God and sensing his approval.
