What does individualism mean in American culture, how it relates to concepts and values such as freedom, democracy, civic responsibility, community involvement. 2. America as a land apart. This examines how Americans have always thought of America as somehow different, special, set apart from other people, cultures, or countries. It applies to questions like whether America is seen as a haven for the world’s oppressed, as a power in the world, etc. It refers to how many generations of immigrants have seen America and why they came here. It also refers to several opposing or conflicting attitudes and values, such as isolationism (America should not get involved with the rest of the world), nativism (foreign immigrants are the problem), extreme patriotism? What are the positive and negative sides to American exceptionalism?
3. Equality and inequality. This includes the tensions between our cultural ideals and values of equality and the reality of inequality in America—poverty, racism, the heritage of slavery and relations to Native Americans, etc. You should be able to explain how/why social categories such as race, social class, and even gender, as socially constructed, not biological or inherent--how racial and class categories are socially constructed and negotiated and “man-made,” rather than biologically inherent and “God-given.” Basically: our physical and genetic traits are inherent and given, but how we and others choose to perceive, emphasize, or ignore various physical and genetic traits, how we place people into arbitrary categories based on these traits, and how we set one category as “higher” or better than another are all socially constructed and learned. We can look at inequality as giving different groups of people different access to wealth, power, and prestige, and how the same social categories that define our identity (race, ethnicity, gender, etc.) also place us somewhere in a social hierarchy. We can always “negotiate” and try to change this. ne of my friends was in a spiritual growth group whose
members became quite close. They provided each other with
a warm, supportive environment to share their joy and pain.
Everyone except my friend and her husband were European
American, but this did not seem to be an issue until one
meeting, when my friend shared her pain about what she
believed to be a racist comment from someone outside the
group. Rather than validate her experience, the group asked
her questions about why the person would make such a com-
ment. They seemed to be looking for a way to justify it and, in
the process, implied that she was overreacting. As the tension
built, one member objected to the time being spent on this
issue, saying, "You know, this is a spiritual growth group, not
an antiracism group." My friend replied, "But racism is a spir-
itual issue for me." Unfortunately, the group members were
unanimous in their inability to see this situation from my
friend's perspective; the result was that she and her husband
decided to leave the group.
The dictionary defines privilege as a right or immunity
that gives the individual a distinct advantage or favor; in con-
trast, the term oppressed is described as the state of being bur-
dened spiritually or mentally, suppressed or crushed by an
abuse of power (Merriam-Webster, 1983). Mclntosh (1998)
compared White privilege to an invisible knapsack that White

people can count on to make life easier. For example, European Amer-
icans can usually choose to be in the company of their own race when
they want to be, they are not asked to speak for their race, they rarely
have trouble finding housing because of their race, and so on.
However, as discussed in chapter 2, privilege also tends to isolate
people, cutting them off from information and experiences related to
specific minority groups that could be helpful and enrich their lives. In
my friend's case, the privilege experienced by the European Americans
in the group led them to believe that racism was not the problem, and
because they all agreed with each other, their position of "rightness"
was affirmed. The only information they had to contradict their belief
was that provided by my friend and her husband, whose views were
easily dismissed because they were in the minority.
People all have their own unique identities and experiences, and con-
sequently the areas in which they hold privilege vary. In general, though,
these privileged areas are often those in which people hold the least aware-

Carl, you’ve done a very good job on your first journal entry and your application of the concepts of “machismo” and objectivity. See my comment on the definition of minority. Are Hispanics considered a minority only due to their numbers? Other relevant concepts that might apply to what you’ve written here might be symbolic interaction and cultural differentiation.

ne of my friends was in a spiritual growth group whose
members became quite close. They provided each other with
a warm, supportive environment to share their joy and pain.
Everyone except my friend and her husband were European
American, but this did not seem to be an issue until one
meeting, when my friend shared her pain about what she
believed to be a racist comment from someone outside the
group. Rather than validate her experience, the group asked
her questions about why the person would make such a com-
ment. They seemed to be looking for a way to justify it and, in
the process, implied that she was overreacting. As the tension
built, one member objected to the time being spent on this
issue, saying, "You know, this is a spiritual growth group, not
an antiracism group." My friend replied, "But racism is a spir-
itual issue for me." Unfortunately, the group members were
unanimous in their inability to see this situation from my
friend's perspective; the result was that she and her husband
decided to leave the group.
The dictionary defines privilege as a right or immunity
that gives the individual a distinct advantage or favor; in con-
trast, the term oppressed is described as the state of being bur-
dened spiritually or mentally, suppressed or crushed by an
abuse of power (Merriam-Webster, 1983). Mclntosh (1998)

they want to be, they are not asked to speak for their race, they rarely
have trouble finding housing because of their race, and so on.

my friend's case, the privilege experienced by the European Americans
in the group led them to believe that racism was not the problem, and
because they all agreed with each other, their position of "rightness"
was affirmed. The only information they had to contradict their belief
was that provided by my friend and her husband, whose views were
easily dismissed because they were in the minority.

sequently the areas in which they hold privilege vary. In general, though,
these privileged areas are often those in which people hold the least aware-

Chapter 1 of "Minding the Obligation Gap in Community Colleges" opens by challenging the idea of "disruption" and how we're conditioned through our educational experiences to categorize this as a negative action from a student. The authors suggest a shift in perspective away from the behavior and towards the educational structures themselves. As stated in the reading, community colleges often act as the first step for PERMSCs to pursue their professional goals and endeavors. Not so long ago, I was in charge of Safety for a fleet of vehicles and drivers. The trucks always had a "team", i.e. 2, and sometimes 3 to a truck to perform delivery duties. There always seemed to be accidents that were minor (damage) to the vehicles with no injuries to the driver team. These accidents would mostly occur while backing. Prior to my managing of fleet safety, technological advancements had "SUBSTITUTED" the job of a good old-fashined "spotter". Back up cameras, sensors and additional mirrors had replaced a person simply disembarking the vehicle and positioning themselves in a safe location to make eye-contact with the driver; and usher the driver/truck into the parked position. Seeing that "ENGINEERING CONTROLS" were already in-place, I needed to affect "ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROLS" and revise the drivers current Standard Operating Procedures, SOP's, (outlining backing) to incorporate the passenger performing duties as a spotter. This also necessitated a training component for the entire fleet of drivers as to expectations around both critical functions of driving and acting as the spotter. This change was implemented successfully and minor-backing accidents, without a spotter, reduced significantly and the engineering controls were present as an additional measure in lieu of ELIMINATING the spotter.

Sixteen states and the federal government abolished discretionary parole release from prison in favor of mandatory parole. Another four states abolished it for certain violent offenses or other crimes against a person. Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
