Ebola was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since then, there have been several outbreaks in Africa, including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1976, Sudan in 1976, the Democratic Republic of the Congo again in 1995, Uganda in 2000-2001, and the Republic of Congo in 2002-2003. The largest outbreak on record began in late 2013 in West Africa, affecting Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone with over 28,000 cases and over 11,000 deaths reported. Cases of Ebola were also reported outside of Africa for the first time, in Spain and the United States.
