St. John Paul II was born in Poland in 1920 and became a priest in 1946. He rose through the ranks to become the Archbishop of Krakow in 1964. In 1978, he became the first non-Italian Pope in over 400 years. As Pope, he advocated strongly for human rights and used his influence to create political change. He died in 2005 but was later canonized as a saint.
