John Paul II, born Karol Jozef Wojtyla in 1920 in Poland, was the first non-Italian Pope who served from 1978 to 2005. He had a varied background that included practicing sports and studying drama as a young man before becoming a priest after his father's death, and as Pope he traveled extensively around the world while surviving two assassination attempts.
