Welcome to my Web 2.0 Workshop. My name is Christine Otto, I am the Media Specialist or Librarian here at Middle School 13. Please have a seat at a computer and feel free to follow along with this presentation on SlideShare represented by the orange link. As we are waiting for everyone to get comfortable I invite you all to participate by following the blue link up above. This presentation will give you an overview of Web 2.0 tools, why they matter, and why your students will really respond to them in the classroom and at home. Best of all we will try a couple out ourselves.
Web 2.0 is all about the 3Cs. Your students are CREATING far more original content they we give them credit for, through their blogs, videos, and social networking. Also through social networking, cell phones and the internet they can CONNECT their creations to others, organize them on art, video, and image sites which enables them to share or COLLABORATE with their friends. Your students offer far more advanced critiques of that picture of some flower their bff took or that video of their brother skateboarding then they do in class. Why? Partly because it's their choice, but also its fun and easy to do with technology. The results are almost instantaneous and updates are always coming in. It is INTERSTING The best part is Web 2.0 tools tend to be easy to use, and all of the ones I show you today are FREE.
According to the Web 2.0 Toolkit made available by the American Association of School Librarians, “Motivation is often cited as an important factor in reading development and teachers often question how to engage students in this process.” Students now carry smart phones, they are connected 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Not being able to make changes to an assignment or to hw up to the moment it is due is almost unthinkable to them. Technology is what they are interested in, the catch phrase is Create Connect and Collaborate because this is what your students are doing online, outside of school. So, we go where they go, and make it fun.
Most of you already use Web 2.0 tools. Don't think you do? Well if you commented on WallWisher while waiting for the class to start that was a Web 2.0 tool. Easy wasn't it? But how can you use them in class? Lets take WallWisher for example. Can you imagine setting up a writing prompt on the wall and watching as students populate the wall with comments? Imagine the responses you could get to something as simple as, “What do you know about Weather?” You could use it for simple polls, to gauge where a class is by their responses to your questions, or by the questions they ask you. You can also choose to approve comments for a WallWisher you leave up for several days, which is a nice feature.
Here is a list of Web 2.0 tools by use. The bottom bullet links you to a couple of websites that offer lesson plans that make use of these kinds of tools. The graphic on the left, like the one one the previous slide, is a Wordle, by imputing blocks of text you can see trends in topics or ideas, the terms that appear the most are larger.
Glogster is a really great update on an old standby, the Poster Board! Lets just agree most students are less then thrilled to be hauling around a poster board for a week, and then trying to finish it the night before it's due. (Gasp, because none of us ever did that as kids!) Try Glogster Edu, sign up for a free account and get 50 student accounts which you can recycle, reusing them with new students. Glogster lets students cut and paste images, videos, text and choose from a variety of free templates to make their Glog unique. Its a very fun, easy way to do a multimedia project.
Before you try this your self let me show you an example of a Glog I made about Tornadoes Here is how you alter the text in the title, by clicking on the post, clicking edit, then I can change the font, its size, color, etc. I can delete this picture of a blue tornado here, by clicking on it then clicking on the pink trash can in the upper right here. Is there anything you want me to show you how to do before you try? --- Time for you all to give it a try! For the next 30 minutes or so work on a Glog. If you finish, you can try Wordle or one of the other Web 2.0 Tools from slide 5 Go to that blue link and sign up for a Glogster Edu account, you don't have anything to loose. Ignore your profile for now, and click on Create New Glog and Name it All About [Your Name] and try to add each item listed above. If you have a question, remember your probably not the only one wondering, so Ask!
