About OSL
OSL are consulting engineers and project
managers to the gas and oil industry. We
provide a variety of engineering and design
solutions based on sound engineering
practices, reinforced by our extensive
operational experience.
In 2005, experienced engineers Nick Jones
and Alastair Robertson founded Optimus
Services Limited, which today is known as
OSL. The company started work on small
offshore modification projects and terminal
design, growing quickly to now deliver a range
of services, from feasibility studies to large
design projects across the world.
OSL employs multidisciplined, experienced
gas and oil sector personnel, chosen not only
for their academic achievements but also for
their extensive practical hands-on expertise in
offshore and onshore design. This gives us the
unique blend of both design and operational
expertise required to provide you with the most
effective solutions.
Our differentiator is that we add value
through providing smarter concepts, thereby
helping our clients to increase revenues
and reduce costs and project timescales.
We always provide effective, innovative and
environmentally responsible solutions.
In OSL, we call this clever thinking.
4. 4
Gas and Oil
Both onshore and offshore developments, although fundamentally
similar, have very different challenges which require specific
attention and expertise in certain areas. Here at OSL we
understand these variations and have extensive experience in
addressing them. This includes the drive to maximise production
whilst reducing the time elapsed from conception to production,
as well as both design and development CAPEX.
Our projects range from small brownfield alterations to large
onshore and offshore projects, and we have successfully utilised
our skills and expertise to resolve client problems both in the UK
energy market and overseas, with maximum effect.
OSL recognise the changing gas and energy market and the
requirement to extend field life, extract more reserves, or develop
more marginal opportunities. Our experience is particularly
valuable in the current market, where asset owners do not
always have the detailed technical knowledge needed to robustly
determine the most cost-effective engineering solution to deliver
gas to the market. Working together, our people deliver the best
results every time.
We required a company
with broad experience
that could overcome
all challenges, provide
an effective long-term
solution and ensure that
environmental responsibility
and risk management were
key factors throughout.
OSL were the solution to
the problem.

6. 6
Gas Storage and
Compression
We are the leading authority in the design and development of
onshore and offshore gas compression systems and so are best
placed to provide our clients with the optimum solutions through
the life cycle of their asset. Having our core roots in gas processing,
storage and transportation, we pride ourselves on providing first class
solutions to the gas market.
Our project experience ranges from simple rewheeling of existing
compressors to new onshore and offshore installations. We are
experienced in matching compressor configurations to client
production profiles and changing field conditions to maximise
production flow over field life for the minimum energy input.
Our experience in compression coupled with our knowledge in
dehydration systems provides clients with all the expertise they
need to design and operate gas storage facilities. This also includes
dealing with the wide range of operating pressures and flows.
The major factor
affecting the success
of gas storage systems
is the ability to provide
fast import and export
of gas. OSL provided
commercial knowledge
and were skilled in
process optimisation
and advanced control
to maximise our
storage value.

Small Scale LNG
OSL are able to offer a viable, cost-effective solution to
meet the demands of a growing number of customers,
previously unable to access the LNG supply chain.
Customers with developing economies, in difficult
locations or with low demand are able to use a
scalable ship operation and terminal design to meet the
requirements of the lower scale LNG demand at a much
reduced investment.
The solution utilises a combination of vacuum insulated
tanks, modular vaporisers and other standard packaged
units. The tanks match the ship volumes, providing
reduced risk in stored inventory and flexibility for capacity
expansion as infrastructure is increased.
This approach allows for a rapid deployment to
developing locations. With all equipment items being
manufactured away from site, it doesn’t rely on fabrication
of large tanks and extensive civil works.
Restrictions in location,
demand rates and long-term
financial commitments have
prevented us from switching
to LNG as our primary
energy source. The OSL and
IM Skaugen solution has
helped us to see a future in
developing our LNG supply
chain to provide us with a
more efficient, cleaner and
cheaper fuel.

10. 10
Minimum Facilities
OSL have a unique understanding of the challenges
associated with developing marginal fields. To enable
us to make them viable, constant innovation and new
technology is required to both cut down the development
cost and provide a shorter delivery path to first oil or gas.
We have extensive experience of developing this type of
project all around the world, not only bringing new and
creative ideas to the table, but also in-depth knowledge of
third party tie-backs through host facilities, thus reducing
the development costs further.
On occasion, OSL have introduced clients to novel and
sometimes cutting edge solutions that despite initially
appearing to be financially inviable development methods,
turn into ideal solutions for the client.
The main point of a mimimum
facilities platform is to provide
a simple low-cost solution
to multi-well developments
for areas where there is
a lack of infrastructure or
facilities to support a subsea
development. Often on multi-
well developments this can
also be the cheapest option.
As a result, MFPs need in-
depth technical design that
is both fit for purpose and
cost-effective; OSL’s multi-
skilled team ensure that this
is delivered.

Petrochemical
The petrochemical services offered by OSL provide a
high quality, independent consultancy service to clients
in the petroleum refinery and chemical manufacturing
industries. With extensive experience of working in these
sectors, our consultants apply a multidisciplinary approach
to challenges through the entire development and
production lifecycle, from appraisal studies through to final
decommissioning.
On a large or small scale, we fully understand the intricate
details of refineries and petrochemical plants. Our teams
have extensive experience in optimising the design,
procurement and construction of all refinery facilities,
including distillation, hydro-processing, fluid catalytic
cracking, coking, octane enhancement, hydrogen
production and sulphur removal units.
OSL understand that
petrochemical services
need to cover numerous
essential technical factors,
as well as catering for a
variety of differently sized
facilities. As a result, their
team’s combined knowledge
and experience gave us an
optimal solution that will
continue to bring top results
throughout its lifecycle.

“
14. 14
Technical Safety
and Risk
The management of technical safety and risk is one of the
earliest priorities in any oil and gas engineering project.
Production facilities, refineries and chemical plants are
generally very complex and located in unique environments
that are often hostile, with potential for health and safety
issues, negative environmental impact or loss-making
downtime. The ability to predict and then prevent or
mitigate undesirable events is probably the single most
important factor in achieving business success in the
energy industries.
The technical safety and risk team at OSL works hand-in-
hand with consultants from our other disciplines to ensure
that effective risk management is a key feature of every
project throughout the lifecycle of the asset, from initial
concept through full-scale production to decommissioning.
OSL have provided excellent
management of our ongoing
safety actions register. They
have helped to put in place the
systems to effectively manage this
important aspect of our business
for the long term. In particular,
the provision of a number of
dedicated site-based engineers
to integrate into the operation has
been the catalyst for raising the
priority and closing out the bulk of
the actions successfully.
“
“
15. 15
Subsea
OSL offer specialist services across all aspects of subsea
engineering, bringing a unique multidisciplinary approach
to subsea design, development, implementation,
installation, the addressing of operational issues and
taking responsibility for our clients’ requirements
throughout the entire lifecycle of the asset.
Having an in-depth understanding of what is required
for subsea systems and their infrastructure gives us an
unparalleled advantage over our competitors when it
comes to linking subsea services to the surface, or vice
versa. Our experience is born not only from designing
entire systems on paper, but also from practical hands-
on knowledge of how the equipment required is best
designed, built, installed and operated.
16. 16
Low Carbon and
Renewables
Here at OSL, we understand the growing demand for clean, safe
energy and addressing the issues of climate change.
We are actively helping clients involved in current government
projects, using their experience of fluids transportation and storage
to provide the technical and risk expertise in the efficient and safe
handling of carbon dioxide. This also ensures that fossil fuel energy-
based projects take into account the need to reduce the harmful
gases emitted and minimise the amount of fuel used.
The particular Low Carbon and Renewables sectors OSL have
gained experience in include:
• Energy from waste
• Combined heat and power
• Carbon Capture, transportation and Storage.
Only if we are
serious about the
development of
our so-called green
technology can we
reap the benefits
both environmentally
and financially.

18. 18
Flow Assurance in
Gas and Oil Production
Flow Assurance has always been a major component of our service
offering. It concerns itself with all the issues important to maintaining
the flow of oil fluids from reservoir to reception facilities. This core area
of expertise is complemented by access to other disciplines, such as
subsea equipment design (mechanical design, materials selection, riser
analysis, etc.), process engineering, and safety and risk assessment.
As a result, OSL’s view of Flow Assurance is not an add-on but an
integrated part of the field development solution we provide.
Our Flow Assurance service is applied across the life cycle of
a development, starting with a good understanding and model
representation of the production fluid, through to equipment design,
operations support and production enhancement. This “full cycle” Flow
Assurance input is essential to minimise the risk of production losses
due to inadequate design or operational issues.
We believe that an
operations lead,
integrated modelling
solution will provide
clients with the necessary
information at project
definition stage and
throughout the field life
to minimise production
losses. OSL provide
the technical back-up
to assess the impact
of start-ups and fluid
characteristic variations
from the reservoir through
to the topsides facility.

Engineering
OSL offers a wide range of specialist engineering
services in addition to our strong multidiscipline
engineering skill sets. Our philosophy is to offer a
complete set of services that can either be tightly
integrated for each study or project, or used on a
standalone basis.
The range of specialist engineering services offered
is driven by the needs and strategy of the business
going forward, and the individual flair and talent of our
engineers. We actively encourage our engineers to
participate in this process at all levels and our current
scope of specialist services includes the following:

22. 22
Our People
OSL provide an excellent and attractive working
environment for the entire team, and our philosophy is
to ensure that all members are given opportunities to
grow. This dedication to personal development stretches
beyond the boundaries of the company, as we also offer
work experience to school and college pupils, helping
them to make informed choices for their futures.
A team of highly skilled and motivated engineers,
consultants and project managers are at the heart
of our business, chosen not only for their academic
achievements but also for their extensive practical
hands-on skills. These individuals allow us to meet
the demand for a quality and experienced engineering
service, and in return they’re encouraged to think, be
creative and thrive. This team brings together skills in
process engineering and rotating equipment design and
operation, offering valuable experience and resources
necessary for the gas and oil markets of today. As a
result, we excel in conceptual design work, feasibility
studies, project development, detailed design and
project management.
A major part of our commitment to the development
of graduate engineers is the company’s Graduate
Development Program (GDP). Management-
administrated but employee-led, the scheme provides a
structured approach applied over a 4/5-year timescale
and is designed to develop both the technical and
interpersonal ‘soft’ skills of a new graduate to the point
where they can successfully attain chartered status. To
ensure that progression is both swift and smooth, all
participants on the scheme are assigned a discipline-
specific mentor and given quarterly reviews, along with
any specific training requirements. OSL’s program has
been accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers
and allows us to boast that we are one of less than
60 companies worldwide to attain their Accredited
Company Training Scheme recommendation.
