 The purpose of The Come-Up is as the name
implies, a magazine that will feature and
highlight the young and aspiring artists in the
underground Hip-Hop scene in North London.
 The opening objective of the magazine is to
establish itself as one of the main names in the
market. As the magazine gains recognition and
a following, the magazine will develop into a
influential competitor in its genre.
 The form of the magazine is:
› A4: The standard size of a magazine. It is large
enough to contain a large amount of information
and small enough for someone to travel with
ease with the product.
 The magazine has a heavy focus on the
genre of Hip-Hop and its sub-genres/aspects
(Trap, Dance, Drill, Trance, Grime etc.). This
will feature in every issue of the magazine
and is intended to capitalize on the
increasing popularity of rap in music and
society within urban areas.
 As rap has risen to the leading genre worldwide
(including London), the range of demographics
that are exposed to rap and frequently listen to
rap such as age and gender is wider than most
genres.
 The genre is significantly more popular within
the younger generations (teenagers, young
adults) and will be the focus and target
audience in order to gain on the genres
popularity. In terms of age a suitable range is
15-20 years as the interests should differ less
than a wider range.
 The main content of the magazine will consist of features of rappers
that are willing to give insight on their career so far and upcoming
events yet to come in their career. This will allow the reader to follow
an artist and support their success.
 It also results in the gaining of recognition and potential increase in
following and fans for the artist featured and allows the rapper to
disperse their message and music to the greater audience.
 A potential article idea is double-page spread which will include a
main feature that involves a rapper that is gaining recognition and
popularity. They will give information on the success that they gained,
how and why they gained it, and and what they produce. This will
continue with the article ending on what the rapper is planning in doing
in the future. This will lead into giving the reader updates and dates &
times on events and performances from the artist if they are intrigued
in the story the article gave.
THE COME-UP
 The title, in terms of the genre, means to gain a better state in talent and status of fame. It
is frequently used in the genre through lyrics and song titles in Hip-Hop such as Big
Sean’s, Kanye West’s, Jay Z’s individual songs each named “The Come Up”, and more.
This means that the title shares a significance to the genre which will aid in appealing to
the target audience and avid fans of the genre.
 Its relevance to the content of the magazine is due to the intent of the magazine having a
focus on the upcoming talents that desire to reach higher levels in their aspiring careers.
 The use of the sans-serif bold font is to appeal to the target audience, being the youth.
The sans serif format is shown to retain a simpler, more modern effect which will resonate
with younger audiences.
 The theme, consisting of various different grey and other dark monotones, is to
correspond with the urban environments that define London and the areas where Hip-Hop
is most popular.
 The magazine is to be distributed and sold in
areas that are prominent in a younger persons
lifestyle. This will include high schools, colleges,
universities.
 It will also be sold for retail in various stores
from local convenience stores to large brands
and chains.
 The marketing of the magazine will be
predominantly based on social media in order
for the product to reach the target audiences.
 The main international competitors are XXL and
Complex. The unique selling point of XXL being the
annual event of the XXL Freshman Cypher. This
involves the public and uses the most popular
names in the genre. Complex’s unique selling point
is its focus on the rap scene of the “East Side”,
focusing on New York rappers.
 The Come-Up’s unique selling point is that it is a
source of identifying new talents and potential
celebrities before other magazines do. It also has
the focus on the hip-hop scene specially in North
London.
 A potential legal constraint is the age of the
featured artists. As the focus is on young and
aspiring artists, their age might require parental
permission for them to be allowed to give
information.
 Also as Hip-Hop has prominent aspects of
freedom of speech, profanity and other
controversial topics are common in its music. If
this were to occur in the magazine, the legal
precaution could be to place a age restriction on
the product.
