Course Description:
 The course, “Comprehension and Oral
Expression,” is addressed to first year
licence students of the University of
Continuing Education. It is designed to
help them develop and improve their
study and learning skills at university. As
students develop their learning skills, they
find themselves making more effective
choices and achieving academic success.
 This course aims to help students understand and use the English
language for academic purposes. It is divided into four units:
Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Each unit contains sections
that discuss the relevant core idea of the subject studied. In the
sections, there are discussions, role selection, free dialogues, language
games and interviews. The selection of the material depends on the
prior definition of objectives, proficiency level and duration of the
sections. These latter are regularly accompanied with exercises for the
students to assess their understanding of the material and to speak in
the English language fluently. It is worth adding that the approach to
teaching is mainly eclectic with a communicative orientation. The
language variety used and targeted is the Standard English. In the
course, feedback is provided as a means of self-improvement.
The General Objectives:
 Students will be able to demonstrate their oracy skills by
developing their listening and speaking skills.
 Students will be able to gain and show their confidence and
capability through speaking in different topics and real-life
situations.
 Students will be able to communicate effectively in English.
 Students will be able to invest their time in their study plans
 Students will be able to develop their study habits
 Students will be able to evaluate their strengths and
weaknesses
 Students will be able to master academic skills
Assessment
 As the aim of the course is to improve students’ skills
in speaking in English about different topics and real-
life situations, the lessons involve different learning
activities and quizzes that should help students to
speak more fluently in English. Additionally, the
interrelated lectures are interspersed with activities
and reflective questions that help students maintain
effective learning strategies. In other words, a set of
exercises and activities is suggested for each lesson.
Finally, students take an exam during the end of the
semester to evaluate their skills and learning process.
